Make the Guy in Your Life a G Star!

“Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.”
Mark Twain

I’ll be blunt…a dapper boy is always an alluring sight to spot on the street. The look doesn’t have to be dressy to catch your eye; merely polished and well-groomed, savvy and subtly chic. Think Justin Timberlake circa 2009 in the Like I Love You video - well-placed hat, jeans that hug and slouch in all the right places, and the adorable addition of simple sneakers. It’s the GQ look; and something that can be served up oh-so perfectly via g star.

Denim-oriented, yet offering an incredible selection of t-shirts, jackets, and polo shirts; G-Star has made edgy, trendy, and stylish looks not just attainable for guys, but welcome with open arms.

As all of those who share their lives with a gorgey guy knows, sloppy is oftentimes the style of choice merely because it is simple. A somewhat stained t-shirt here, an oversized pair of jeans there; and they’re good to go. Why? Because it’s a quick and easy look for them; yet one that makes us, the fabulous fashionistas on their arms, cringe.

G-Star has changed the fashion philosophy for guys. Their looks are every bit as effortless as those stained and oversized ensembles that we loathe, yet retain an urban elegance to them that guys love to strut around in; and we, the lovely ladies in their lives, love to see them strike a pose in. A very stylish compromise, don’t you think?

What do you think of the G-Star look on guys?

365 Beauty & Style Guide: Chic Polish + Ring Combos

365 Beauty & Style Guide: Chic Polish + Bauble Combos
Rings look far more ravishing on one’s fingers when they’re coupled with a pretty manicure, but not just any color will do. Here, check out a few stellar, summer-perfect cocktail ring and mani combos that will leave all eyes on your haute hands!

1) Beach Scene: A few years ago, owls were the big accessory craze; this year starfish (or sea-stars), like this BaubleBar Starfish Ring are huge when it comes to jewelry – which is perfect given the current season (summer!). This particular shape is oversized, so it definitely stands out in aesthetic; however, color is really minimal, due to the fact that it’s covered in clear crystals. To truly make it stand out, and play up the beachy vibe, I love how it looks paired with Essie’s Cascade Cool, which is a bubblegum pink with purple undertones - and totally reminiscent of the color of the sand at Pink Sand Beach in the Bahamas (yes, the beach actually has pink sand there!). NOTE: This nail polish color makes you look tanner than you really are – total plus!

2) Destination…Tropics: Turquoise can be a finicky accessory color, as sometimes it leans more to the blue side, others green, and sometimes it has an aged look to it. Kenneth Jay Lane’s Turquoise Oval Ring fits into the first category. The stone is a really clean, almost sky blue/turquoise; and the setting is a really rich, glamorous brushed gold plate. Due to the fact that it is such a bright, colorful accessory, to get a truly tropical feeling from it, I like the idea of pairing it with an equally bright nail polish – my polish of choice is Essie’s Fear or Desire, which is a creamy orange / tangerine color (very on-trend for 2012, as Pantone has named Tangerine Tango the color of the year). These two colors coupled together are mind-blowingly beautiful; and totally tropical in that umbrella-in-your-drink type of way.

3) Bollywood Beauty: Summer is one of the best times of year to wear bold, vibrant colors that really make you standout. In accessories, I personally love a very feminine color juxtaposed against an unexpected aesthetic, like this Dara Ettinger Small Pink Hillary Ring. The color of this ring truly reminds me of the pinks and reds seen in Indian Spice Markets, so to stay in line with that Bollywood / exotic type of theme, it deserves a really, really pulsating nail polish hue. My choice is Thakoon for NARS’ Koliary which is a phenomenal cyan blue, and would make for a super pretty pedicure, as well as a manicure.

4) Jagged Edge…with a Classic Twist: There are times when you’re wearing a really stunning ring, or ring set, like BaubleBar’s Organic Stacking Ring, and you want to complement it with a nail polish color, without overpowering the accessory itself. Nude is a very subtle pairing; however, it gives a lot of people ‘mannequin hands’, and it’s not the simplest of tasks to find one that complements your coloring. For that reason, I like to pair rings like these with a neutral, sheer shade that has just a kiss of pink to it. My favorite is Julep’s Jennifer, which is a beautiful, barely-there shade that allows your ring to stand front and center; whilst serving as a truly classic backup dancer.

Which ring / mani combo are you eager to don this summer?

NOTD: Julep Claire

Manicure: Julep Claire. Described by Julep as a Sky Blue Creme
(UPDATE: Use Coupon Code TWITTER1 to become a Julep Maven for a penny, and get this color with your Introductory 'Classic with a Twist' kit).

How To: For this manicure I used one coat of Essie's First Base Coat for adhesion; two coats of Julep Claire; and one coat of Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat.

Notes: Application of Claire was perfect - not streaky at all. The color was entirely opaque after two coats. I wore Claire for 6 days before removal; during that time I experienced no chips. The manicure remained gorgeous from Day 1 through Day 6.

Accessories: Forever 21 Pearlescent Love Ring Set in Silver / Clear.

The Beauty of Philanthropy: e.l.f. + Beauty Bus Foundation

As a beauty fanatic, I have love affairs with multiple makeup companies and beauty products at a time. For the past few months, I have been in the throes of a love affair with e.l.f. (Eyes Lips Face), as their products are super affordable, provide great quality, and basically make it easy for you to try products out (like the Lip Exfoliator), that you may not have given a second look to had it been offered by a more expensive company.

This week, my adoration for them has grown higher, because they have teamed up with the Beauty Bus Foundation as part of their 8th Birthday Celebration.

Now through tomorrow – Monday, June 25, 2012, when you spend $20.00 at e.l.f., and enter coupon code BDMINI upon checkout, not only will you receive the e.l.f. Studio 27 Piece Mini Makeup Collection for FREE, but one will also be donated to the Beauty Bus Foundation.

For those of you who have not heard about the Beauty Bus Foundation, it is an organization that “…delivers dignity, hope and respite to chronically or terminally ill men, women and children and their caregivers through beauty and grooming services and pampering products.” This is achieved through In-Home Beauty and Grooming Services in Los Angeles, California; Pop-Up Salons; and the Bag of Beauty Program.

I just thought it was a really great partnership to see, as Beauty Bus Foundation is a wonderful organization, which is why I wanted to share the information with all of you. I know that the partnership motivated me to purchase $20.00 worth of merchandise that I didn’t necessarily need right now, but bought anyway because I wanted to contribute to Beauty Bus Foundation – and I thought this was a great way to.

Again, for those interested, the Coupon Code is BDMINI. You have to add the e.l.f. Studio 27 Piece Mini Makeup Collection to your Shopping Cart, along with $20.00+ of merchandise; then add the Coupon Code upon checkout for it to take effect. Good through tomorrow – Monday, June 25, 2012.

Chic for the Summer: SwayChic.com Review

“I have never known a really chic woman whose appearance was not, in large part, an outward reflection of her inner self.”
Mainbocher

I have always felt that my inner self was playful, curious, compassionate, fashion-oriented, and, especially during the summertime, colorful; thus, when I was given $50.00 to spend on anything of my choosing at SwayChic, I took Mainbocher’s words to heart, and selected two items I felt reflected my inner self – and would make a strong impression on my summer wardrobe!

Knit Cropped Halter in Lavender – During the summertime I live in tops that show off my shoulders, as they keep me completely cool (temperatures are known to hit 107* and higher where I live), and allow for a very subtle, chic form of sexiness. The Knit Cropped Halter had all of this, which is why it was love at first sight. This particular top looks small when you remove it from the packaging, but it fits so well (I am a 34B, 5’1, and got the Small), and has a super pretty ruching along the front, which adds a little extra dimension to the style. Due to the fact that I’m short, I actually wear this top with standard shorts (i.e. not high-waist), and it looks gorgeous, with just a couple of inches of toned tummy showing. Definitely a staple for the warmer months – and adorbs for tossing over a bikini! Also available in Tan.

Rectangle Bag in Teal – One of my fashion / accessory obsessions is colorful clutches. I have literally resolved to add a clutch in every color of the rainbow to my collection; so when I saw the Rectangle Bag in Teal I had to have it. I am in love with this bag. In terms of size, and the length of the removable strap, it is incredibly similar to that of the Rebecca Minkoff Morning After Clutch (MAC), but that is where the similarities end. Inside there is two side pockets; and outside there is a push-lock closure which I adore because it’s not something you see every day on a bag. In fact, I usually see it on Mulberry bags. The detachable chain strap matches the push-lock detailing. Both are gold in color, but more of a rose/white gold than a yellow gold, which is really pretty; and, like the push-lock closure itself, very unique. If you follow me on Instagram @cafefashionista, you may have seen me post a picture of this clutch, and how I accessorized it earlier in the week (which you can see below). Also available in Coral.

While I focused on tops and bags during my mini shopping spree; SwayChic offers a gorgeous selection of everything from dresses (I’m currently crushing on the 60s Inspired Crepe Shift Dress and Floral Embroidered High Neck Dress), jewelry (the Lydia Bracelet tops my wish list), and shoes (I know I’m not the only one who wants a pair of the Woven Neon Wedges in Pink!); as well as denim, jackets, and even hair essentials (like patterned turbans!).

If you were given the chance to go on a SwayChic Shopping Spree, what would you buy?

All That Glitters: Promgirl Clarisse 1658 Homecoming Dress Review

“Dresses for breakfasts, and dinners, and balls;
Dresses to sit in, and stand in, and walk in;
Dresses to dance in, and flirt in, and talk in;
Dresses in which to do nothing at all;
Dresses for Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall.”

William Allen Butler

The date: September 18, 2007. The show: Gossip Girl Season 1, Episode 1: Pilot. The situation: Returned It Girl Serena van der Woodsen (aka Blake Lively) dons a sparkling, gold sequin-adorned Tory Burch Sleeveless Dress with black Wolford Tights for her date with Dan Humphries (Penn Badgley). The result: At the very moment I spotted that glittering dress I resolved that I would one day own something just like it, and thanks to Promgirl, I finally do.

Just two weeks ago, I was offered the chance to select a gorgeous homecoming dress from Promgirl – an online leader in special occasion dresses – and I immediately jumped at the chance. Though I am past the age of homecoming and prom, I am not the type of girl to refuse a fancy party or cocktail frock; thus, I instantly requested the Clarisse Homecoming Dress 1658 for its likeness to the Tory Burch pretty I’ve been swooning over for nearly five years – a selection that I could not be more pleased with!

The Clarisse 1658 is the type of dress that every girl deserves to have in her wardrobe – even if just to gaze at it admiringly. Unlike many sequin dresses that itch when you wear them, the 1658 features a stretch bodice underneath the sequins, which serves as a protective layer against skin, to prevent itchiness to create the ultimate in comfort. What I love, however, are the details.

The V-neck in the front is matched by a scoop back that gives you a double-dose of daring sexiness; while the mini hemline allows you to flash a little leg without giving too much away. My favorite element, however, is the color. While the Tory Burch Sleeveless Dress that I have coveted since 2007 is gold in color; the 1658 is more neutral-toned – blending chocolate and beige sequins together to give off a radiant, champagne glow that shimmers like a fine wine.

FASHIONISTA VERDICT:
Sexy, elegant, simple, and glamorous; it’s impossible not to feel like a celebutante when garbed in such a gorgeous garment. Be prepared to have all eyes on you!
5 / 5 Hearts

What do you think of the Clarisse 1658 Homecoming Dress? Which Promgirl dress would you love to find hanging in your closet?

Bean Bag Chairs 2.0 - You Know You Want One!

As a twenty-something with a shoe addiction trying my best to stay on a budget, one of the things that I spend the least on is furniture. That’s not to say that I don’t love pretty home décor to dress up my living space; rather, I can’t always afford it – and even if I can, it’s too heavy for me to transport home, or assemble. Enter my new obsession…bean bag chairs!

Once considered the type of décor found in dorm rooms across the nation; bean bag chairs have evolved into a stylish way to spruce up your home sweet home in a fashion that is playful, full of personality, chic, trendy, lightweight (so you can redecorate in a snap), and, above all, comfortable via a wide range of colors, prints, textures, materials, and even shapes – five shapes, to be exact.

There’s the Flat, which is like a bean bag bed; the Teardrop (my favorite!), which is shaped like a teardrop so that it provides a back/head rest; the Horsy, which you can straddle comfortably; the Laid Back, which is a cross between the Teardrop and the Flat, offering you a back/head rest, but in more of a resting position; and the Armchair, which is basically the bean bag equivalent of an armchair. So you can add a little leopard to your living room with the Purple Ombre Leopard Bean Bag Chair in the Teardrop style; tantalize your guests with a touch of teal using the Teal Nylon Bean Bag Chair in the Armchair style; or metallicize your bedroom with a Gold Lame Bean Bag Chair in the Laid Back style.

I’m currently eyeing the Pink (in the words of Legally Blonde’s Elle Woods, “Whoever said orange was the new pink was seriously disturbed.”) in the Teardrop style; the Lime in the Laid Back style; and the Lavender in the Armchair style. What color / pattern / print / style bean bag chair would you love to add to your living space?

Spend the Summer with LC Lauren Conrad for Kohl's!

I was in high school when I was first introduced to Lauren ‘LC’ Conrad on MTV’s Laguna Beach. I followed her through the series The Hills; watched her navigate through numerous make-ups and breakups (of both the romantic and friendship variety); accompanied her on her stint at Teen Vogue magazine; devoured her L.A. Candy book series; and, when I heard that she was designing a collection for Kohl’s…I ran to the nearest store!

That, of course, was back in October 2009. While I have steadily bought bits and pieces from each of the Kohl’s LC Lauren Conrad line; I am most excited for Lauren’s summer 2012 collection (some of which is in stores this month - June 2012; and some of which will debut next month - July 2012) – which, in my opinion is one of her best yet. And what I am even more excited about is the fact that I get to share it with all of you right now – starting with June releases!

Sassy Specs...GlassesUSA Style!

“Men seldom make passes at girls who wear glasses.”
Dorothy Parker

Perhaps at some point and time the aforementioned quote by Ms. Parker rang true; but with GlassesUSA.com on the scene, you can’t help but to refute her claims, as they have made it possible for males and females to remain positively stylish via their vast selection of fashion-forward specs that would make even New Girl’s Jess (aka Zooey Deschanel) swoon!

An online leader in the art of eyewear, GlassesUSA allows one to indulge in designer specs like Coach, GUESS, and Tom Ford; or play the role of frugal fashionista with cheap glasses that are perky, playful, and penny-pinching perfect.

A few years back I was in the market for a new pair of glasses, due to a change in my eyeglasses prescription, and I wound up with a flirty pair known as the Alicia in Mauve (still available on the site!) – a style with a cat-eye effect that, to this day, makes me feel like a retro-garbed cast member on Mad Men whenever I don them.

One thing was missing when I purchased Alicia, however; the new GlassesUSA Virtual Mirror feature, which allows you to take a pair of eyeglasses for a test drive, before purchasing them!

Using the Virtual Mirror feature (which is, in my opinion, one of the greatest site additions on the planet), you are prompted to select your gender (male or female); and upload a photo of yourself from your computer, take a picture with our webcam, or simply select a photo of a person (whose face shape is similar to yours) from the GlassesUSA database. Once this is complete, you can use the Try-It Mirror to see how you would look in any pair of glasses that tickles your fancy.

I’m currently coveting a pair of chunky GUESS eyeglasses that come adorned in playful pink and black and embellished with rhinestones. What pair of glasses has caught your eye?

Savvy Summer Style with mark!

I met mark years ago. It was through mark that I purchased my very first tube of mascara (Scanda-Lash Hook Up Mascara), my very first container of eyeshadow (the now-discontinued i-glimmer Illuminating Eye Color in Bronzed), and, believe it or not, mark who showed me how to apply liner on my upper eyelids via a tutorial video viewed in the wee hours of the morning during a bout of insomnia. Though many things have changed in my life over the years, the one constant has always been mark. And for mark’s loyalty to me, I have felt nothing but loyal towards mark; thus the reason why I have been so thrilled by the introduction of fashion from mark – to so perfectly correlate with the stellar beauty products they offer.

Though mark has been offering fashion and accessories since the days when Lauren Conrad was the official mark girl; this summer’s style offerings (with Ashley Greene as the current brand ambassador) are my absolute favorite, as it spans everything from dresses and blazers to sandals and floppy hats – all of which are fully on-trend, fashionable, fabulous, and affordable – take a peek at a few of my favorites below!

Look 1: Roll With It Romper ($32.00) + We Got the Bead Necklace ($32.00). Rompers are incredibly versatile as a whole, as they can seamlessly transition from day to night; but this particular romper, in my opinion, is even more so, as it has sleeves and a nipped in waist, making it perfect for evening affairs (think Blake Lively, Miranda Kerr, and Nicole Richie).
Look 2: Going to New Lengths Skirt ($30.00) + Layer Up Bracelets ($20.00). Louis Vuitton, Celine, Prada...Midi Skirts were all over the Spring 2012 runways because, obviously, they are effortless, classy, and allow the wearer to embrace a little Mad Men style of their own. mark's Going to New Lengths Skirt is one of my favorite pieces this season because it is a berry shade (not too bright, and definitely not boring), and...it has side pockets, so fashion meets function!
Look 3: Short and Sweet Dress ($36.00) + Layer Up Bracelets - linked above ($20.00). This dress is the perfect juxtaposition between sweet and sexy. The dress is constructed out of denim, and the bodice features a sweetheart neckline (very girl-next-door); while the back features an exposed zipper, and the bodice has a subtle corset-like vibe going on to add a little feisty edge.

Look 1: Cool It Dress ($34.00) + Rock of Ages Necklace in Clear ($24.00). The little white dress is to sultry summer days what the little black dress is to chic cocktail parties. In other words? Essential! What makes the Cool It Dress a little more unique is the all-over dot-lace, which adds extra dimension, and makes it perfect for topping a bikini at the beach or special occasions!
Look 2: Easy Going Maxi Dress ($35.00) + Sunny Outlook Sandals ($32.00). For those of you who follow me on Instagram @cafefashionista, you may have seen me post a picture of myself wearing this dress last week (if not, you can see it here). Ordinarily, I am not a maxi dress person (I'm only 5'1!). In fact, this is the first one that I have ever owned. That said, this is the maxi dress that everyone needs to own. The print is zebra (animal print is always in style), but blue instead of black (very summer-friendly); and the fabric is just incredibly, incredibly comfortable. I honestly did not want to take this dress off - a definite must-have for the summer.
Look 3: Blaze the Way Blazer ($48.00) + Borrowed from the Boys Watch ($40.00). I love the look of a blazer with cuffed denim or over a flirty dress, but black can be harsh during the spring and summer months, which is why the Blaze the Way Blazer is so perfect. The cream color works really well with pastels and neons; and this particular piece has ruching on the sleeves, which makes it a little more fancy (plus, you never have to deal with pushing the sleeves up!).

Look 1: Sunny Outlook Sandals ($32.00). Nude sandals are absolutely essential in my opinion as they seriously elongate your legs (perfect for short girls like moi, and also make your feet look smaller (Angelina Jolie uses this trick all the time). Even more, they match anything and everything in your wardrobe, so you don't have to really think when you're getting dressed in the morning. What I love about these is that they have silvertone detailing (remember, silver makes you look more tan!), which adds a subtle touch of glam; plus, they have a back zipper, which I like to think of as tongue-in-cheek chic.
Look 2: The Last Straw Hat ($26.00). Floppy hats always show up during the summer, but The Last Straw Hat, I think, is more flattering than many others, as the brim, while providing coverage, isn't as oversized and ostentatious as a lot of other offerings. Additionally, it features a lacy texture and scalloped edges which adds a lot of femininity to the style.
Look 3: Tall Order Sandals ($38.00). A stacked wood heel in a cognac/brown hue is always a fun form of footwear for the summer, as it can dress up something as simple as cutoff denim shorts, without appearing too over-the-top or flashy. I love the Tall Order Sandals because they have a crisscross aesthetic over the front of the foot (which is a pretty detailing), and they hit low enough at the vamp to avoid cutting your leg in half; rather, they elongate your legs - something we all want!

Which of the looks above would you like to use to make your mark this summer? Dish dolls!

365 Beauty Guide: Must-Try Mani / Pedi Combos

365 Beauty Guide: Must-Try Mani / Pedi Combos
Make a splash this summer with decadent mani / pedi combos sure to make sunshine days a little brighter!

1) Jewel Tones: Pastels are a huge draw during the spring / summer seasons; however, rich, jewel tones are a bit more sophisticated and unexpected – not to mention they (surprisingly!) pair beautifully with spring and summer ensembles. My favorites are Essie’s Turquoise and Caicos, and Thakoon for NARS’ Ratin Jot.

2) Nude + Bright: Bare nails can be boring; but a polish that looks barely there is an elegant way to lengthen fingers, and keep your look professional (important in office settings!). I like to counter it with a bright pedicure, which allows you to try two runway trends at once (nudes and neons). Deborah Lippmann’s Naked and Tom Ford Beauty’s Nail Lacquer in Coral Blame are my favorites. NOTE: If you have pale skin, look for a nude shade with pale pink undertones to avoid ‘mannequin hands’.

3) Mint + Metallic: Mint greens possess a very sweet vibe; whereas metallics add a futuristic touch. The reason I love pairing the two together, is because both colors make you look tanner (I’m pale, so I need this!). Metallics, especially silver, reflect light, enhancing your tan; while the pale blue/green undertones found in mint polish create the same effect. I like Deborah Lippmann’s Stardust, and Sally Hansen’s Xtreme Wear Nail Color in Mint Sorbet.

4) Double Pastel: Pastel nails are one of the simplest lacquer looks, as they complement any skintone; plus, they have an ultra-feminine vibe that invokes images of girly ice cream socials (think the Louis Vuitton Spring 2012 Ad Campaign). You can create a combo out of any pastel colors; however, my favorites to mix and match are pale blue and peach a la Essie’s A Crewed Interest and Chanel’s Le Vernis in Coco Blue.

5) Classic + Playful: Red is one of the top three most classic nail colors available, and looks absolutely stunning for pedicures; however, it can sometimes be harsh for manicures during the spring / summer months. My solution? Pair it with a playful color that is more in line with the season (and the season’s obsession with colorblocking). I like OPI’s Big Apple Red for toes, coupled with butter LONDON’s '3 Free' Nail Lacquer in Cheeky Chops for fingers. The colors complement one another; and seamlessly pay homage to the hues of summer.

6) Ombre Effect: I have never been a fan of matching mani / pedis as they can sometimes feel a bit stuffy – especially during the warmer months when your nails are on constant display. What I do love, however, are shades from the same color family, which create an ombre-esque effect. Right now I’m obsessed with pinks, so I love NARS’ Nail Polish in Trouville, paired with Thakoon for NARS’ Anardana. As we are in the throes of spring/summer, I prefer using the lighter shade for manicures, and the darker shade for pedicures; but vice versa looks beautiful too.

What mani / pedi color combo are you eager to try this summer?

Summertime Style for the Cute Boy in Your Life!

Dolls, if we are absolutely truthful with ourselves, we are able to admit that shopping for summertime styles for the male persuasion is never an easy task. Cute boys seem to feel most comfortable concealing their gams underneath heavy denim – even when the temperatures spike into the triple digits, and sweat is pouring down their temples. But I digress; Calvin Klein said it best when he stated “There has been a change in men’s attitudes towards their clothes. Men are more aware of fashion; they’re not afraid of it.” What they are oftentimes afraid of, however, is showing off their legs in Men’s Shorts; which is where you come in.

As the fashion-forward beauty we both know you are, you deserve to be accompanied by an equally fashionable beau this summer – and you can be! Two of the biggest trends in male fashion this year are short suits and vibrant prints and patterns – both of which can be achieved via the incorporation of a few well-selected pairs of shorts that will keep your boy cool in the heat; and effortlessly transition with him through the changing of seasons.

Plaids and stripes like the Rivington Daniels Checked Cargo Shorts, and the Fenchurch Meep Shorts can be coupled with plain white tees and Converse for casual summer daytime looks; or paired with a crisp button down (collar popped) and boat shoes for a more preppy summertime style (day or night). Whereas chinos – like Nanny State’s Toledo Chino Shorts – and tailored styles, like Superdry’s Regatta Tailored Shorts and French Connection’s Peached Cotton Shorts can seamlessly convert from summer simplicity to business casual or a dynamic fall look with the addition of a well-cut blazer, or cardigan.

One selection caters to the vibrant print and patterns trend, the other embraces the short suit obsession; both, luckily for you, provide your cute boy with a handsome summertime style that keeps him cool and dapper from day to night!

What’s your favorite summertime style for boys?
