NOTD: MILANI Dress Maker

Manicure: MILANI Nail Lacquer in Dress Maker. Mint Green Shimmer with a name that serves as the perfect nod to Coco Chanel.

DUPE ALERT! Remember during Fall 2009 when Chanel debuted Chanel Jade Le Vernis Nail Polish on the runways? The color sold out everywhere, and was literally being sold on eBay for more than $200.00 a bottle (despite the fact that it originally retailed at $25.00)! If you didn’t manage to score a bottle of the coveted polish, you’re in luck…MILANI Nail Lacquer in Dress Maker is basically an exact dupe – and it’s just $4.49 a bottle!

How To: For this manicure I used one coat of Essie's First Base Coat for adhesion; three coats of MILANI Nail Lacquer’s Dress Maker; and one coat of Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat.

Notes: Dress Maker is a very buildable formula, meaning that you have full control over how sheer or opaque you want the color. At one coat, it was completely sheer on me; two coats was thicker, but there was still VNL (visible nail line); three coats, to me, was perfect in regards to opacity. Overall, I was really happy with the formula; it wasn’t too streaky or too thick, and it was really easy to work with. Aside from the color, what I loved so much about this polish was the lasting power. Some of the pictures you see here were taken the day that I first polished my nails, and some were taken six days later. You cannot even tell a difference between the two because the color was so rich, vibrant, and chip-free until the moment I took it off.

I received so many compliments on this polish from people when I was shopping. The color is just so beautiful, unique, and eye-catching – you literally cannot resist it. This is one of those polishes that you want to buy back-up bottles of, just in case it is discontinued. Seriously.

Accessories: Forever 21 Dangling Rhinestone Ring Set in Mint / Clear.

Beauty on Your Doorstep: BeautyBox5 {BB5} Review

A few weeks ago I was offered the chance to try out the monthly beauty subscription service BeautyBox5. As many of you know, I am a JULEP Maven; however, I have shied away from other beauty subscription services – such as BirchBox and Glossybox – due to the element of surprise that comes with them, meaning you can’t preview the products before receiving and purchasing the way you can with JULEP, resulting in sometimes paying for items that you don’t want or need. That said; I have always wanted to try a monthly beauty subscription service, and I love sample sizes of products, so I jumped at the chance to receive a box from BeautyBox5.

BeautyBox5 offers three separate subscription services and price points: Monthly is $12.00; Quarterly is $30.00; and Yearly is $100.00. BeautyBox5 partners with a number of different brands, many of which are eco-friendly/organic-based companies. In each box that you receive, you will find 4 or 5 beauty samples, and a postcard-sized information sheet offering more information about each of the products inside – including the retail price of each. I received four beauty samples inside my box.

Samples Included In My Box:

Blinc Mascara {Retail Price: $26.00}
Curls Gel-Les’c (Curl Jealousy) {Retail Price: $25.00}
Spongeables Pedi-Scrub Foot Buffer {Retail Price: $2.99}
Bodyography Makeup Primer {Retail Price: $30.00}

I feel like beauty subscription services are definitely a hit or miss; for me, this particular box was a hit, as three of the four products I loved. As for the fourth, it wasn’t that I don’t like the product itself, it simply doesn’t apply to my needs. The miss product in this box, for me, was the Curls Gel-Les’c (Curl Jealousy), which is a product for people with curly hair, which I don’t have, so this isn’t a product that I would use or need.

The hits for me would have to be the Blinc Mascara, Spongeables Pedi-Scrub Foot Buffer, and Bodyography Makeup Primer; the Blinc Mascara being my favorite of the bunch, as it is water-resistant, as opposed to being waterproof, so while it doesn’t smear when wet like a waterproof, it is far easier to remove. I have wanted to try a water-resistant mascara for awhile, so I was really excited to find this product in my box.

Like I said, with monthly beauty subscription boxes, you never really know what you’re going to get (which is why I don’t know if they’ll ever really work for me); but, if you don’t mind that risk, I’d say that BeautyBox5 is definitely a fun one to try out.

What do you think of the items I received in my BeautyBox5 box? Is BeautyBox5 something you would subscribe to?

NOTD: JULEP Hayden

Manicure: JULEP Hayden. Neon Peach Creme.

How To: For this manicure I used one coat of Essie's First Base Coat for adhesion; two coats of JULEP’s Hayden; and one coat of Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat.

Notes: From my experience, JULEP’s nail colors have a fairly thick formula – this extends to Hayden (which I found to be thicker than Claire - reviewed here). Regardless, the coverage is gorgeous. You can be opaque with this color after one coat (I did two, just to be sure of complete coverage). Hayden is a neon color, so it dries completely matte – so if you want it to shine, you definitely have to use a top coat.

I am in LOVE with this color; I think it will forever be my favorite JULEP shade. It is completely unique and gorgeous; plus, it seriously makes you look tan. I’m really pale (I described myself as being one step up from a vampire the other day), yet in real life (I don’t know if it’s completely captured in these pictures), this color makes my skin look so tan. It is absolutely perfect for spring / summer because it kind of plays up two different trends at once – neon and pastel. If you only buy one JULEP nail color, I highly recommend this one.

Accessories: Dara Ettinger Angelica Ring in Red.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with JULEP; it is a monthly subscription service similar to Birchbox, wherein each month (unless you elect to skip that month), you receive a box of nail polish / nail care items worth $40.00 or more, for $19.99. The colors and products you receive are based on your style profile (I am ‘Classic With A Twist’), which you can change from month to month. I joined for a PENNY two months ago and have loved it so far – especially since I’ve received so many products already. In My Closet: Pieces Jorie Shop Ring

Last week, a lot of you were raving over the Starfish Ring I was wearing in my Nail Talk: China Glaze Aquadelic post. Since it has become one of my absolute favorite accessories over the past few weeks, I thought that I would do a mini review / feature on it. If you Follow Me on Instagram @cafefashionista most likely you saw me post this picture a few weeks ago, but I’m obsessed with it, so here it is on a larger scale.

This is the Pieces Jorie Shop Ring in Gold (it’s also available in Silver), which I purchased from ASOS in June. I had been looking for a Starfish Ring that was inexpensive but really pretty for awhile, and this one was only $14.91, so I thought it would be perfect. I found a 20% off coupon code right before I purchased this, and ASOS doesn’t charge for shipping, so I wound up spending less than $12.00 total (such an unbelievable deal, right?).

I have really small fingers (4 / 5), so I ordered the Small (S) 16mm, which is equivalent to a Size 6. Usually, a Size 6 is a hit or miss for me in ring sizing, but this one is on the smaller end, so it fits perfectly. I have worn it numerous times (always receiving tons of compliments), and have not experienced any type of ‘green finger’ despite the fact that it’s costume jewelry. Two additional pluses: it’s super lightweight, and not at all bulky on the finger, so it doesn’t interfere with moving your hands or anything. I’m actually contemplating purchasing it in silver too, as I love it so much; so if you’re looking for a ring in this style, this one is highly, highly recommended.

June 2012 Favorites: Beauty

As you may already know, I have an obsession with beauty products, so I thought it would be fun to start a monthly feature here on Café Fashionista that showcases the different beauty products that I am loving each month. I am really loyal to certain brands and products; but that doesn’t stop me from making new discoveries each month, and the ones that I am including today are my favorites from June. Let me know if any of these are your favorites; or what beauty products you’re loving right now in the comments!

China Glaze Flip Flop Fantasy - This is actually a color from the Summer 2010 Poolside Collection, but I only discovered it in June of this year, and I have been obsessed with it ever since. This is a really unique but fun color – especially for the warmer months. It is a super bright neon coral / pink with orange undertones. Usually I use a nail color once and then don’t use it again for over a year or something; but this color I have used for manicures multiple times over the past month alone, and right now I have it as my pedicure color. It’s definitely a must-have if you’re looking for something bright and playful.

Hard Candy Glamazon Glow All the Way Face & Body Luminizer, Bronze 318 - I mentioned this product back in May as part of my 365 Beauty Guide: 6 Essentials Your Makeup Bag May Be Missing; but it has now become a part of my daily skin/beauty routine. I don’t use this as a bronzer; rather, I use it as a body shimmer by mixing it with my sunscreen each day, and putting it all over m legs and arms for a subtle sparkle. This stuff is incredible in that you need hardly any for results (I use half a dime-size on each leg), so it’s long-lasting. The only downside is that it does transfer to clothing if you don’t give it at least 15 minutes to dry; so definitely remember that if you use it.

JULEP Essential Cuticle Oil - As you can probably tell from my Nail Talk posts, I change my nail color a lot, so I’m constantly using acetone nail polish remover, which really damages my cuticles, and leaves my nails dry. This is the first product (and I have tried A LOT) that I have found that truly hydrates my nails, and keeps my cuticles in good shape regardless of how harsh I am with my nails. What I love about this product is that you can use it daily, and it has a roller-ball applicator, so it’s really simple to use even when you’re on the go. Plus it has a eucalyptus type of scent to it which I find soothing. Don’t be intimidated by the small bottle. I use this product multiple times a day, and I have barely made a dent in the bottle, so it’s definitely worth the $18.00 that it retails for ($14.40 if you’re a Julep Maven).

mark Gloss On Lip Gloss in Sunset Beach - I have this product in two colors – Sand and Sunset Beach. I’m very into the dark eye / nude lip look, so I thought that I would prefer the Sand color (which is nude), over the Sunset Beach shade (which is a pale coral), but the opposite was true. Sunset Beach has become my go-to color all summer long because it doesn’t so much leave a color on your lips (the way a lipstick would), but, instead, takes your natural lip color and enhances it – which I love. Not to mention that it is really long-lasting, even when you’re drinking or eating (I rarely have to reapply); and it’s not sticky at all. If you’re looking for a neutral lip gloss, this is highly, highly, HIGHLY recommended. I love it!

SEPHORA COLLECTION Crystal Nail File in Pink - I have always been slightly intimidated by nail files, so I’ve never used them before; but last month I wanted to start shaping my nails into a square/round look, so I picked up a few nail files to see which one would work the best. This SEPHORA COLLECTION Crystal Nail File was my favorite out of all of them, because it produces the best results in the quickest amount of time. I also liked the fact that, as a novice, it was really easy to use right off the bat. Compared to a standard emery board, I found that the Crystal works better at sealing edges, and preventing snags – so this is my new love when I give myself manicures. Also…PINK!!

So those are my June beauty favorites. Like I said, let me know in the comments section what beauty products you’re loving right now; or, if you have any questions about the products I featured here, let me know below.

NOTD: China Glaze Aquadelic

Manicure: China Glaze Aquadelic from the Electropop Collection. Bright, Neon-Toned Turquoise.

Not A Dupe: Aquadelic looks very similar to China Glaze’s incredibly popular For Audrey, but it is not a dupe. On the nail, Aquadelic has more green undertones, and is far brighter and neon-based than For Audrey; whereas For Audrey is more of a mint-leaning shade, that is dusty / baby blue based (like the Tiffany & Co. color it was named for).

How To: For this manicure I used one coat of Essie's First Base Coat for adhesion; two coats of China Glaze’s Aquadelic; and one coat of Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat.

Notes: Aquadelic has an incredible formula. The consistency was perfect, and super simple to work with; and the color was basically entirely opaque after one coat (I did two just to be on the safe side). I am amazed at the lasting power of this color. I wore it for seven days, experienced 0 chips, and the color never dulled. Another thing to add is that China Glaze polishes have incredible tip-wear, and Aquadelic was no exception. If you like turquoise / teal colors, you would love this.

Accessories: Pieces Jorie Shop Ring (the starfish) via ASOS. Forever 21 Floral Butterfly Ring Set in Peach / Ivory (the stackables).

Flittering Flirt: Case-Mate Adina (Butterfly) iPhone Case Review

“Butterflies are self-propelled flowers.”
R.H. Heinlein

At the age of seven I found a caterpillar, brought her home, and fed her daily; watching as she went through a metamorphosis beginning with the creation of her chrysalis (cocoon), and, ultimately, her emergence as a full-fledged butterfly 1 ½ weeks later, before releasing her. Since then, I have been virtually obsessed with butterflies – including butterfly kisses. So when Case-Mate so graciously offered me the chance to select a new case for my iPhone, I went straight for the colorful piece that reminded me of the beauty I had set free so many years earlier – the Adina (Butterfly) Case.

One thing I find so appealing and elegant about butterflies is that they possess a very feminine, flirtatious vibe to them, as they are very unharnessed and free, flitting from one location to the next with brief stop-offs to charm admirers before continuing on their journey. Case-Mate has so perfectly captured that nature and ambiance of them in the Adina (Butterfly) case; showing multiple butterflies mid-flight, and giving them a 3D effect via the raised silicone pieces.

The Case-Mate Adina (Butterfly) has a very transitional feel to it. Though the colors work beautifully for the spring and summer months, they will seamlessly transition into the fall season due to the fact that they are extremely rich, vibrant, jewel-based shades (jade, magenta, plum, and royal blue) that will look stunning off-set against autumn’s earthy tones. A versatility that I, for one, am incapable of resisting.

POSITIVES:
♥ Eye-catching hues and a decadent design that make a lasting impression year-round. ♥
♥ Form fitting, flexible silicone shell that keeps your beloved iPhone protected (even covering corners); whilst allowing access to all ports and functions. ♥
♥ Impact resistant. ♥
♥ Raised silicone pieces that create an easier hold; AND lend a pretty 3D effect. ♥

FASHIONISTA VERDICT:
An accessory that makes your style soar through winter, spring, summer, and fall! Bonus? Pair it with a jewel-toned sweater in the fall, or an all-black look in the winter to really make the colors come alive!
5 / 5 Hearts

Autumn with Aeropostale!

“Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.”
Albert Camus

Check the date, mes amours; we are already well into the month of July, indicating that fall is just around the corner. What does that mean? Shopping for new autumn wardrobes, of course! While I have seen adverts for Aeropostale for ages; it wasn’t until I spotted Chloe Grace Moretz’s ad campaign with the company (she is the new spokesperson BTW) that I was prompted to dig a little deeper, only to discover that Aeropostale is full of stylish goodies that are perfect for the fashionista living on a budget, who can stretch her designer dollar even further by using these 2012 Aeropostale coupon codes!

As a Grad student in the throes of her final semesters before graduating, I find that, once fall rolls around, I spend 95% of my time in jeggings and skinny jeans, and the other 5% in dorm attire that is equal parts comfortable and cute – just two of the things that Aeropostale specializes in. But this fall, with style star Chloe helming their back-to-school campaigns, and having signed on as their style curator / ambassador, Aeropostale will be adding a touch of edge to their coming collection with moto jackets, printed denim, statement pieces, jewel-tones, and chunky sweaters. All of which I plan on snatching up the moment it hits stores.

In the meantime? Well, I’ve found that I’m smitten with the summer festival looks that Aeropostale has put together (which I first spotted on their Facebook page); and I think I need to scoop up a few of their crocheted pieces (hello, little white crochet skirt!) before it’s too late!

Which Aeropostale looks are you loving right now? Do you adore Chloe Grace Moretz’s style as much as moi?

Don’t forget to follow @Aeropostale on Twitter for awesome styling tips!

NOTD: ORLY Fancy Fuchsia

Manicure: ORLY Fancy Fuchsia. Bright, Barbie Pink Crème with Purple Undertones (this would make a great summer pedicure color!).

How To: For this manicure I used one coat of Essie's First Base Coat for adhesion; two coats of ORLY’s Fancy Fuchsia; and one coat of Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat.

Notes: The formula of Fancy Fuchsia is thick, so you can get away with using just one coat for full opacity. I used two coats, as I wanted to even the color out, which was slightly streaky for me because I used thin coats. I wore Fancy Fuchsia for 5 days before removal. The color remained just as bright on Day 5 as it was on Day 1 with no chips.

Accessories: IndulgentDesigns Sterling Silver Infinity Knot Ring (worn above-the-knuckle) via Etsy. Urban Outfitters Delicate Serpent Ring.

My Summer as a mark Girl: mark Product Review + Outfit of the Day Times Three!

A few weeks ago I let you all in on my obsession with mark beauty and fashion products; and today I am excited to do a review of three gorgeous summer looks from their Hamptons Collection that mark recently sent me, which have become huge staples in my summer wardrobe (and that I absolutely love!). If you follow me on Instagram @cafefashionista you may have seen me post pictures of myself in these outfits over the past few weeks; and now you get the official review!

Look 1: Roll With It Romper - Out of all three looks, this has become my absolute favorite, because not only is it incredibly comfortable, it is also incredibly versatile. I own over twelve rompers, but this has quickly become my favorite due to the fact that it has a dressy vibe to it. The material, while 100% Polyester, has this subtle sheen that makes it appear shimmery in a silk-ish way; and the short sleeves give you a little extra covering that is incredibly sophisticated (and juxtaposes perfectly against the playful keyhole back). I paired mine with a chunky silver forearm cuff, and gold Seychelles heels, and felt that it looked perfect; but you could also pair it with a long necklace (like they did in the mark adverts) to make more of a statement.

Look 2: Cool It Dress - I call this my The Seven Year Itch dress, because the aesthetic (with the cross-front chest) reminds me of the white dress that Marilyn Monroe was wearing when she stood over the subway grating in the film The Seven Year Itch. This is one of the most beautiful dresses I have ever owned. It has a dot-lace overlay, which adds a little extra dimension to the design; and a truly, truly flattering cut as it features an elasticized cinching right below the bustline to create an empire-like waist. I paired it with an oversized gold and white Cocktail Ring, and my gold Seychelles heels, so it looked a bit dressy; but if you pair it with flat sandals, it makes it look a little more casual. The name of this piece (the Cool It Dress), could not be more perfect, as it is really breathable and comfortable, and just perfect for summer and trips to the beach. I’m kind of in love with it!

Look 3: Easy Going Maxi Dress - I mentioned in my previous post that I have never owned a maxi dress before because I’m short (5’1 in flats); so I was really excited when I opened up the mark package and found this dress inside, because it allowed me to try out a maxi dress for once – and I completely adore it. Maxi dresses can be so difficult (especially when you’re not tall), as sometimes they fit too wide, or have a strange print that is unflattering. The Easy Going Maxi Dress didn’t fall into either of these categories. The print is a fun, summery take on zebra, in that the colors, instead of being the normal black and white stripes, are varying shades of blue and white; while the deep-V neckline and elasticized empire waist really tailor the dress to fit you in a truly flattering way. I wore mine to a barbeque on the beach and received more compliments that I can count. The unanimous phrase I heard regarding this dress (on Instagram, Facebook, and in real life) was “Ooh la la.” You’ve got to love a dress that earns reviews like that!

FASHIONISTA VERDICT:
Regardless of where you happen to be wearing these looks, mark’s Hamptons Collection will make you feel as if you’re on a blissful beach vacation every single time you slip on one of these comfortable yet downright chic pieces.

Ooh La La from La Redoute

“If there were no Frenchwomen, life wouldn’t be worth living.”
Friedrich Engels

Freidrich Engels’ quote could just as easily be applied to French women’s fashions; specifically womens dresses.

As any fashionista knows, the French have that certain je ne sais quoi that makes even the simplest styles look elegant, sophisticated, and fueled with passion – from a striped boat neck top, black leggings, and ballerina flats; to a long-sleeved frock sporting a drop waist and coupled with knee-high boots. French women live, sleep, eat, and breathe glamour; qualities that are readily available to the un-French via style from La Redoute, a French fashion megastore that serves up Parisian glamour in the form of haute high-fashion looks at affordable price points.

Channel your inner Audrey Tautou during chilly winters with the Asymmetrical Crepe Dress with Elasticated Waist. Envision visiting the colorful flowers located in front of Paris’ St. Eustache Cathedral while wearing the Coloured Straight Cut Shirt Dress with Drawstring Waist. Dream of spending the day window shopping in the Louvre-Tuileries and Faubourg Saint-Honoré district while donning the Long Flounced Tie-Dye Dress in Crinkle Cotton Voile. Style yourself in the Long-Sleeved Plain Voile Dress while daydreaming of fall afternoons spent people watching at outdoor cafes. The Parisian possibilities are endless, mais oui?

Which La Redoute lovely makes you say ooh la la?

Beachy Keen!

"Women shop for a bikini with more care than they do a husband. The rules are the same. Look for something you'll feel comfortable wearing. Allow for room to grow."
Erma Bombeck

As any girl who has so much as contemplated a trip to the pool or beach can tell you, Swimwear is not merely a small sliver of wardrobe space visited between the months of May and August before being locked away until the next swim season; rather, it is an entire closet unto itself that is modified and updated throughout all twelve months of the year (including winter – hello hot tubs!), encompassing not just bikinis, but sundresses, cover-ups, sunglasses, bags, and sandals. How do I know this? I will confess; I am a swimwear-aholic.

Like many other beach babes, I am always on the hunt for a new bikini or sarong to add to my burgeoning collection. It makes no difference that I have countless pieces peering out of my bureau, tags intact; there is something liberating, inspiring, and thrilling about having a new piece of swimwear in one’s possession – especially when it is a piece that makes you look and feel fabulous. And what makes me look and feel fabulous? Bandeaus!

Currently, my swimwear essentials are bandeau bikini tops and low-rise hipkini bottoms in neon peach hues; skin-toned wedge sandals with barely-there ankle straps; sarongs in bright colors that make one feel like a belly-dancer; oversized sunglasses; and sand-skimming maxi dresses.

In light of tomorrow’s swim-centric holiday, tell me…what are your swim essentials?

Sporty Couture...Get Into It!

Though it seems unlikely when you take a peek into my wardrobe nowadays; during my formative years I adhered to one style of clothing that I referred to as tomboy chic, which consisted of oversized sweatshirts coupled with Chuck Taylor’s and cargo pants. Though those days are mostly behind me, there is still a bit of tomboy chic lurking underneath my current style; so you can imagine how thrilled I was to see sporty couture storm the Spring / Summer 2012 runways in the form of track jackets, rugby stripes, nylon materials, and, my personal favorite, Women’s Hoodies.

While I adore everything related to the sporty trend; presently, my wardrobe staples include cutoff denim shorts, sky-high wedge sandals, dark wash skinny jeans, flowy tank tops, and oversized accessories – items that I cannot live without, and which don’t truly make the ‘sporty’ cut. My solution? Hoodies.

I’ve found that a sporty hoodie is the perfect juxtaposition to a chicer look; creating a seamless pairing that gives you a splash of athleticism whilst maintaining sophistication.

For Sunday Brunch last week I paired a bright Zip Up Hoodie with cutoff denim shorts, Espadrille Wrapped Heels, oversized sunglasses, and a messy topknot; earlier in the week I wore a Long Hoodie tunic-style over simple black leggings with boots (it was a particularly cold June day) and a long necklace; and for a recent evening hangout sesh at the beach with my besties, I paired my skinny jeans with a Quilted Hoodie Jacket (which featured Varsity detailing) for an unfussy look that was cute and casual.

In my wardrobe, hoodies have taken on the same form of versatility as the denim jacket. How do you style your hoodies?
