{beauty board} glamourize your green eyes!

beauty board: green eyes
From left-to-right.

Perhaps, as someone with green eyes, I’m slightly bias in my adoration of the shade; but I find it utterly captivating to look at, and incredibly fun to play up. The red undertones in purple shadow palettes and purple liners make green eyes brighter, and more emerald-hued; while taupe shadows with a touch of glitter and sparkle draw out golden flecks, creating a yellow-like cat eye. For smoky eyes, skip the deep blacks and opt for smoky metallic silver shadow palettes and silver-flecked charcoal liners to make your eyes shimmer {a la Kristen Stewart}; and don’t shy away from green shadows - simply experiment with different colors and textures. Try a metallic, smoked sage shade {I favor bronze-leaning hues myself} that will complement and enhance your eyes, rather than conceal their glamorous color. Just beware your choices, you're likely to leave many green with envy.

it's all about the shoes boots...

My first time donning the highly obsessed-about fold over boots.

My shoe collection is slightly perturbed by their appearance as I literally wear these every. single. day. Except, of course, when I feel compelled to wear their just-as-fabulous black leather counterparts. As they say, "If you find something you love, buy it in every color." Who am I to disagree?

Short hemlines are one of my vices, ranking right up there with my shoe snobbery; yet even I am incapable of ignoring the seductive purr of a maxi skirt that sits upon one’s hips in such a place that allows for a sliver of skin to peek out between top and bottom, and hugs one’s lower half in a style synonymous with that of a pencil skirt.

Balance the stretchy, second-skin of the skirt with a downtown-inspired draped-collar motorcycle jacket that adds just the right amount of cool; and match the peek of skin above your waistline with a pair of black suede peep-toes. A highly-detailed clutch in a contrasting shade breaks up the monochromatic effect; while a delicate ring contributes the perfect hint of sparkle. Go feminine but fierce with your makeup using a gold-flecked peachy pink gloss on your lips; and smudge a bronze-leaning brown liner around your lower lashline and the outer corners of your eyes for a smoldering effect that is subtle yet striking.

NOTD: Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Red Zin

This is two coats of Sally Hansen’s Complete Salon Manicure Nail Polish in Red Zin. Wine Red.

Can we just talk about how epic the formula for this polish is for a minute? Sally Hansen’s Complete Salon Manicure Nail Polish is exactly what it says – a complete salon manicure in two simple coats. The formula contains base coat and top coat, so you do not need anything more than this little bottle. I was a little apprehensive about not using a base coat {especially for a color this dark}, as I was worried about staining; but I experienced zero - along with zero chips for the 6 days that I wore it. Plus, it retained its glossiness {yes, without the addition of a separate top coat} from day 1 through day of removal. Highly, highly, highly recommended - especially for all of you ladies who want glam nails but don’t have the time.

Special Note: Thank you to Carrie of Couture Carrie for introducing me to this brand. If you remember the Holiday Blog Swap I did back in December with Carrie, you may recall that I mentioned having received this polish from CC.

Ray-Ban romancing...

Contrary to what many may assume, second in line to my love for shoe obsession is not handbags or diamonds, but sunglasses. Specifically, Ray-Ban Sunglasses. Blame it upon my present location, where even on the most overcast of overcast days sunglasses are mandatory; but in the opinion of yours truly, they are one of those accessories you simply cannot be without {even if you merely use them to conceal your eyes when checking out cute boys}. While I would love more than anything to be able to wear the Ray-Ban Aviators seen on street style darlings, celebrities, and celebutantes alike; I find that they always make me feel unfeminine, and a bit like an off-duty police officer {very different from the off-duty model look I’d prefer}. Oversize aesthetics, like Butterfly Sunglasses, however, make me feel wildly glamorous; which is why I was more than happy beyond thrilled to accept such a pair from Sunglasses Shop. Enter the Ray-Ban Jackie Ohh Sunglasses {as seen on Ashley Greene, Peaches Geldof, Anna Paquin, Heather Graham, Courtney Love, and Elin Nordegren}.

As the name alludes, the Jackie Ohh is certainly a pair of sunnies that one could imagine Jackie O herself wearing {in the ever-chic black color}; I, however, being pale to a vampire-like extent, opted for the Light Havana offering - a tortoiseshell hue that is incredibly complementary to my light brown hair {and will look gorgeous in the glinting sunshine come spring and summer}. In the past week alone they've been paired with riding boots and ponytails; cropped blazers and skinny jeans; pleated faux-leather minis and suede platform booties. And you know what? They've managed to add that special blink-and-you'll-miss-it je ne sais quoi to each and every style. Now I'm simply counting down the days until bikini season arrives, as I know that they'll look just as spectacular coupled with my cache of skimpy swimsuits from Victoria's Secret.

Psst...And here's a little secret from me to you. Come back tomorrow for a Giveaway wherein you could take home a pair of these very sunglasses {Retail Value: $176.38}.

{muse of the moment} Givenchy fold over leather boots

During my non-working hours, much of my time has been taken up perusing the pages of the Victoria’s Secret Swim 2013 catalog {where I have already marked The Sash Overlay Bikini as a warm-weather essential}; scoping out potential sandal contenders {I’m thinking the metallic alice + olivia Denny would look amazing against tanned legs}; and scooping up necessary nail shades {hello pretty L’Oreal pastels}. The one thing standing in my way is…Givenchy.

Long before you knew me as Café Fashionista, I was a boot fanatic. An adoration that has seemingly grown by the second as I’ve spotted Carrie Bradshaw strut down the streets of New York in knee-high snakeskin boots and a fur coat {enviable topknot bobbing along with each step}; supermodels take the Isabel Marant runway in slouchy fringed boots coupled with microscopic minis and body-hugging skinnies; and now, the always-chic Christine Centenera {Senior Fashion Editor for Vogue Australia} donning the very Givenchy boots in question during the illustrious Fashion Week.

With these on my covet-radar since fall 2012, I finally purchased the more-budget-appropriate-but-still-incredible Stuart Weitzman Spats Boots in December as a combination birthday/Christmas/graduation gift to myself to quell my Givenchy desire; rather, the purchase has had the opposite effect. As those of you who follow me on Instagram have likely figured out; I love the Spats version so much, that the lure of the Givenchy's has only grown. But at an almost-but-not-quite $2,000.00 pricetag...unlikely seems the word. Still, a girl can swoon.

Matchy-matchy ensembles essentially left my mind the moment I saw Whitney Port subtly reprimanded for being 'too matchy-matchy’ in her styling when she reported for her first day at Teen Vogue on The Hills. That said, I have nothing against a monochromatic look from time to time – especially when the majority of the monochrome is made up of makeup to complement something as perfect as a cozy Angora sweater in a cotton candy hue.

Wear it off-the-shoulder, allowing a simple pendant necklace to peek out to add a sultry touch to the girly shade; and balance the slouchiness with a pair of hip-hugging, light-wash skinny jeans for a casual, low-key luxe effect. A cap-toe pump keeps the look playful; while the addition of skull stud earrings provide just the right amount of edge. Slick on an ultra-shiny, sheer gloss {with a hint of pink}, coupled with a heavy-hand of vibrant, bright pink shadow for femininity; and turn up the glam with jet black winged liner for a truly tough touch. It’s the ideal balance of rock ‘n’ roll meets pop tart - and so fab for date night.

{beauty board} make your brown eyes brilliant!

beauty board: brown eyes
From left-to-right.

Brown eyes have a bad rap. Far too many write them off as boring, blasé, and impossible to accentuate. Truth? All of the above is completely incorrect {as Leighton Meester proves with all of her red carpet beauty looks}. Out of all eye colors, brown possesses the most versatility, as it serves as the perfect canvas to a wide array of makeup hues. Gold-flecked olive shadows and eggplant / plum mascaras draw attention to all splashes of green in your eyes; electrifying cobalt shadows and office-appropriate {yet still ultra-flirty} navy blue liners and shadows create a strong contrast that magnify your eye color; and warm metallic shadow {think golds, coppers, and cinnamons} adds depth and a coquettish twinkle to your gaze. As I said…brown eyes are so not boring.

{what to wear} under the weather wardrobe

“I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired.”
Fannie Lou Hamer

I really can’t say that I blame you. In fact, I’m sure I would feel the same way if I found myself in your current situation. It is completely understandable that when you’re feeling under the weather you want nothing more than to collapse into a heap in your rattiest pair of pajamas, tuck yourself under a fluffy comforter for optimal warmth, and surround yourself with boxes of tissues, colorful macarons, and a stack of glossy fashion magazines that will see you through the sniffles in true sickly style. Unfortunately, harsh and hectic schedules do not always allow for such luxuries.

One cannot hide away from the world catering to a minute cold by spending the day in hibernation; at the same time you do not want to frighten random passersby with garish garb or red-rimmed eyes courtesy of a pesky ailment that has deemed it appropriate to plague you. It is at this particular time that you must embrace effortlessness.

Attempting to fool the world by trying to conceal your feverish condition via blazingly colored clothing and ravishing red lips is often the quickest way to signify that you are, in fact, unwell. By retaining an understated, natural, effortless glamour about your person, your look screams bright-eyed and bushy-tailed – exactly what you want.

As with everything, however, creating an uncomplicated presence is not as simple as slithering out of bed and scampering out the door. It takes time and planning to get that offhand appearance; whilst staying true to the number one style rule of being sick: maintaining comfort. To put it bluntly, if you are unable to cozy up in your clothes, be it on your BFF’s couch or in your own private boudoir, then your frail form is accoutered incorrectly. As long as you keep this maxim in mind, of course, you are well on your way to looking stylish when sick!

{the slouch effect} Fitted frocks and tops are one of the most magnificent ways to highlight your curves and show off your figure; but when the flu bug bites the absolute last thing you want is to feel confined in your clothing. At times like this drapey duds become a classy comrade which ensure that you maintain complete blissful elegance without forsaking your trademark sassy style.

Tunics, short dresses, and billowy blouses are essentials for your I-don’t-want-to-get-out-of-bed wardrobe. The loose fit makes getting from here to there more comfortable in your suffering state; while retaining a bohemian-inspired ambiance that makes your appearance very nonchalant and indifferent – two temperaments that only work to make you more irresistible to cute boys!

“‘Tis healthy to be sick sometimes.”
Henry David Thoreau

Search for styles with slight embellishments like a knotted bust line {a la Velvet's Tempest Cowl Neck Top}; empire waists which flutter and flow about your form in a haphazard yet heavenly fashion {Free People's Willow Glen Top} is decadent; or cuts with versatility which make it simple to switch up your look in seconds {I'm partial to Victoria's Secret's Multi-Way Tunic Sweater}. Pieces like this stand the test of time and never fail in making one look chicregardless of how miserable you may currently feel!

legwear

{the tight stuff} We spend countless hours per week striving to tone our thighs and gluteus maximus muscles in a fashion that will keep our bodies tight, fit, and capable of donning any type of legwear that piques our interest; therefore it is only fair that, as the fashionistas we are, we peruse opaque tights, pretty patterns, and luscious leggings at a time when we need a bit of bottom half bliss. And that, dolls, is when we are feeling downright debilitated!

Denim is spectacular when we’re feeling energized, revitalized, and hotter than a firecracker sizzling in Times Square on New Year’s Eve; when you’re feeling unfabulous, however, they take on the role of the devil. The 7 For All Mankind skinny jeans that once made us feel fantastic now make us feel frumpy; the Joe's Jeans boot cut jeans that made you feel beautiful yesterday have turned beastly and now make you feel bloated; the Rag & Bone/JEAN moto jeans that looked marvelous in the dressing room mirror just last week have become malicious by making you look massive. By all means, do not toss these items into the garbage no matter how much your last dose of NyQuil tempts you to do so; simply set them aside for another day. One needs resilience, buoyancy, and flexibility when they are weak; thus, ditch the denim during this delicate time and embrace styles with stretch!

“If you treat a sick child like an adult and a sick adult like a child, everything usually works out pretty well.”
Ruth Carlisle

Slip a pair of SPANX's Tight End Tights on under a tunic that covers your tush for a cozy effect that tantalizes; show a playful sliver of skin via Only Hearts Geometric Lace Leggings – the perfect pairing for your feisty frock; or mimic the denim look with DL1961's Emma Legging Jeans. Keeping your legs covered when you’re tormented by the chills is a complete necessity in your quest to get well soon; yet harbors the ability to take your look du jour to new heights - ergo, let your bubbly, effervescent personality shine through and have fun with your legwear!

{shoe snob} Slippers may be whispering sweet nothings in your ear at this very moment; but please do not make the mistake of traipsing out of doors with nothing but these accoutering your feverish feet! Around the house slippers are absolutely fantastic at ensuring your toes stay toasty; but their scant fibers do not hold the same power once worn out of the confines of your cozy abode and onto the chilly concrete that is omnipresent in the big, bad outside world. Not to mention, they also make one feel completely dumpy at a time when what you truly need is a kick of desirability. For this reason alone, slide those shabby slippers underneath your bed and stuff your tootsies into something a little more stunning!

Levende Waters once said “Funny that a pair of really nice shoes makes us feel good in our heads – at the extreme opposite end of our bodies.” Such words are completely true. Fabulous footwear has the ability to transform one from the inside out. They add that special je ne sais quoi to your look; whilst boosting your confidence at the very same moment. Of course, when sick, it is your mission to keep your feet looking chic yet feeling contented all at once. Blissful booties and out-of-this-world Oxfords satisfy both of these prerequisites.

“It is better to be rich and healthy than poor and sick.”
Dave Barry

Oxfords and booties possess a type of hoity-toity class that makes it possible for you to induce stares with your style, despite the fact that you are sick as a dog. The aesthetic of both is very highfalutin and fun; yet proffers an air of elegance that streamlines your silhouette, and pulls your entire appearance together with a seductive smirk to the world.

You may adore stilettos; but now is not the time to don such killer shoes. When one is feeling under the weather, their balance is not at its best; therefore, stick to oxford flats like 3.1 Phillip Lim's Nancy Flat Oxfords. The old-fashioned styling contributes a touch of retro glamour to your dress, while adding a snazzy shape to your overall look. If you absolutely must have an extra hint of height, look for well-shaped wedges {I love the ferocity of Messeca New York's Studded Suede Wedge Booties} or chunky heels {like Rachel Zoe's London Platform Booties}. These two designs will give you the lift that you’re looking for without surrendering satisfaction!

{a jumble of jewels} Anyone who told you that accessories were unnecessary at a time when you are unhealthy was sadly mistaken! A splash of sparkle makes everything better, including a runny nose or aching bones. On that account, go wild! Raid your grandmother’s jewelry box for vintage finds of the pearl variety; beg your BFF for permission to play dress-up with her diamonds and rhinestones; and, most importantly, dig through your own bureau for baubles that will make you twinkle, shimmer, and glitter like the gorgeous creature you are!

“A healthy body is a guest chamber for the soul: a sick body is a prison.”
Francis Bacon Sr.

Bigger is most definitely better in terms of jewelry when you’re feeling less than fabulous. The bedazzling brightness of such pieces detracts attention from your pasty pallor; whilst shedding a bit of light upon your good taste in trinkets. Oversized cocktail rings like Rebecca Minkoff's Pave ID Ring and Made Her Think's Smashed Talong Ring are a must. Their design is over-the-top and ostentatious allowing them to flirt coquettishly and play a subtle game of hanky-panky with anyone who dares glance in their direction; while ornamenting your frail fingers in true high-fashion!

{looks for those feeling lousy} I realize that you are suffering at the moment. That your mind and body feels weak. Please do not let this get you down. I would never leave the side of an ailing friend; therefore, I have put together full ensembles with you, my bedridden besties, in mind. Simply choose the style you want to rock for the day and slip it on for optimal sassiness that will have you feeling better in no time!

Outfit no. 1 A slouchy, pale gray off-the-shoulder top layered over a lace camisole {allow it to peek out if you’d like}, black leggings, Oxford flats, a handful of your favorite chunky bangles, and a long necklace or two.
Outfit no. 2 A loose-fitting black mini dress that falls just below the derriere, patterned or lace tights to add texture to your lower half, wedge booties, and massive rings.
Outfit no. 3 An empire-waist top in a neutral tone, denim leggings, black or gray booties with a chunky heel, and an erratic assortment of rings, bracelets, and necklaces.

NOTD: Essie Mint Candy Apple

This is three coats of Essie's Mint Candy Apple from the Winter 2009 Collection. Creme De Menthe Minte.

Yes, this shade was released years ago, but I whip it out multiple times throughout the year {especially during the winter / spring seasons} as it is an absolute classic {i.e. clear a spot for it on your shelf right between Essie's essential vamp-tastic Wicked, and ultra-feminine Ballet Slippers}. The color leans toward the realm of mint chocolate chip ice cream {being far more pale in hue than China Glaze's For Audrey}; and looks incredible on any skintone. I honestly cannot sing its praises more...just get a bottle {if you don't already have one, that is}. A Note: I find that pastel colors can sometimes be thinner and more runny than darker shades {hence the three coats}; but if you shake the bottle between coats, it helps the formula to regroup, and build opacity {at least from my experience}.

Accessories: IndulgentDesigns Sterling Silver Infinity Knot Ring (worn above-the-knuckle) via Etsy.

winter warmers {for the SoCal cold snap}

If you know me even the teeny tiniest bit, you are aware of the fact that I'm a little bit wildly obsessed with boots. For me, they are the mainstay of my wardrobe, which is why I always seek out the most fabulous pairs possible. Under ordinary circumstances, I judge boots solely on their fashion-forward appearance, as the temperature in Southern California rarely never dips low enough to require a functional pair; but with the recent SoCal cold snap {that has left me with the desire to hibernate for the rest of the season}, I have had to revise my selection process - seeking true winter appropriate pieces that will keep me chic and cozy from the cruel chill in the air. And so is how my love affair with ladies boots by Clarks has come to fruition.

winter warmers post
Kendra August in Python Noir + La Mary in Black Combination Suede + Mascapone Cafe in Tan Leather + Melanie Jess in Navy Nubuck + Kendra August in Black Suede + Norley Cedar in Ebony Suede

The pieces seen above are some of my personal favorites from the Winter Warmers collection - a series of sophisticated aesthetics laced with Softwear cushioning to keep the wearer feeling comfortable and looking classy, cute, and charming from day to night. Now that you've been introduced to the collection, I should tell you that I'm dying to pair the Kendra August in Black Suede with an oversize black sweater, black as night opaque tights, and heavy kohl-lined eyes. Such a combination would make for an incredibly glamorous, yet moody evening look, yes?

{muse of the moment} slouchy knits + sequin minis

My predilection for oversized, slouchy knits and barely-there sequin minis manages to rear its head at precisely the same time each year; and once it arrives there is absolutely no way to shake its presence. It’s an unexpected conundrum, seeing as how the former seems more suited for {stylishly} hibernating for the winter months {with white hot chocolate in hand}; while the latter is more apropos for after-midnight soirees involving dancing and, perhaps most definitely laughing champagne towers.

Truth be told, even during SoCal winters, there is very little room for bare legs; rather, the weather is more suited to Instagramming indoors with a good book and a plate of Neiman Marcus Chocolate Chip Cookies {P.S. They're TDF}, or taking quick denim-and-boot shots in the backyard before Jack Frost nips at your nose a bit too much.

Regardless, my obsession du jour is not an impossible dream….if both pieces are worn together, as shown in these ultrastylish snapshots. Now all that’s needed is a sequin mini of my own – the search is on…wish me luck!

it's all in the details...

Last month the incredibly stylish {and super sweet} Kim of Pish Posh Perfect invited me to be a part of her Savvy Style Chat series - which I was more than happy to agree to. I had such an amazing time answering Kim's questions that I thought I would post our Q&A here, so that all of you who visit Cafe Fashionista cat eyes & skinny jeans could learn a bit more about me {as I'm not one to often share many details about myself} - and what I do when I'm not blogging. And so, here it is...enjoy loves; and thank you, Kim!

Those shoes! I hunted down those Jean-Michel Cazabat Zulaka shoes in the Foxtrot color for months in my size. I literally stalked Shopbop’s website. Finally, one pair popped up on the Barney’s website, and I clicked ‘Purchase Now’ without hesitation. I’m also wearing a Candie’s Top from Kohl’s {that has the prettiest lace detailing on the back}; and white shorts {also from Kohl’s}.

What is your full time gig?

A:
Grad Student. Since August of 2011 I have been in a full-time Grad Program leading towards a Master’s in Business Administration. As I write this, I am officially 2 ½ weeks away from graduating {!!!!!}. December 15, 2012 is my official last day. UPDATE: As mentioned, I officially graduated on December 15; therefore, my current full-time gig is Recently Graduated Grad Student Pounding the Pavement for a Full-Time Job {while freelancing on the side}.

How does your occupation affect your personal style?

A:
As a Recently Graduated Grad Student, my occupation has affected my personal style in that anything goes. I don’t have a particular uniform to adhere to on a daily basis; and can pretty much choose who I want to be {style-wise} based on my mood. The one trap I refuse to fall into is that of sloppiness. I may spend hours on homework, but I still want to look my best {even when I have class in the wee hours of the morning}. I have found that layers, boots, and resilience are a Grad Student’s chic best friend; therefore, I favor heeled boots, skinny jeans with at least 2% spandex in them, colorful printed scarves, and slouchy sweaters – occupational style essentials that have crossed over into my personal-time wardrobe {especially for midweek brunch/coffee dates, and weekend shopping sprees}.

I love this picture because it was the first time of Fall 2012 that I was wearing my absolute favorite boots – Ivanka Trump Kamila! Also…it marked the first time that I wore a scarf {see the pink} in years; so I consider it my style milestone day!

What other endeavors do you participate in and how do you transition your wardrobe throughout the day to meet the needs of these various roles?

A:
Aside from being a full-time Grad Student, I am a freelance writer. Currently I write weekly articles about local bands for U-T San Diego newspaper / The Californian newspaper. Additionally, I write animal care articles for Cat Fancy magazine fairly frequently; and, a few years back, I served as Features Editor for the now-defunct Six78th magazine {one of my favorite gigs yet – I got to interview The Jonas Brothers!!}. I also work freelance in the field of editorial / social media content. I suppose you could say I wear many hats; and I’m constantly on a deadline.

Each of my roles seems to differ for me style-wise – sometimes I’m meeting with ‘rock ‘n’ roll’ types for band interviews; other times I’m chatting with Veterinarians in a more professional setting. Over the years, I have found that certain wardrobe pieces tend to work for all situations {or can modify my current look just enough to fit the role that I’m dressing for at the moment}. For me, these pieces include cropped blazers, dark wash skinny jeans, almond-toe pumps, chunky-heeled ankle boots, slouchy sweaters, heeled boots, and the occasional touch of fringe.

An example of my wardrobe transition in action: A few months back I had two interviews in one day – with a Veterinarian in the morning and a band in the afternoon. For the Veterinarian interview I wore a cropped blazer over my slouchy sweater, cuffed my skinny jeans, and slipped on almond-toe pumps {professional yet fun}. For the band interview I took off the cropped blazer, adjusted my slouchy sweater to give it an off-the-shoulder fit, un-cuffed my skinny jeans, and swapped my almond-toe pumps for knee-high heeled boots {playful, youthful…totally cute}. Voila! Two looks in one – give or take a few pieces.

What is your most favorite piece in your wardrobe and how often do you wear it?

A:
Believe it or not, right now it’s an accessory – a Sterling Silver Infinity Knot Ring by the Etsy seller IndulgentDesigns. If you Follow me on Instagram, it’s likely you see this ring in a lot of my nail of the day pictures. I am literally obsessed with it – I wear it every single day. I find the simplicity of it to be charming. Plus, I love what the infinity symbol stands for; therefore, this ring is my favorite right now.

Honestly, I just like the way my eyes and shoulders look in this picture – which is why I’m including it. I will admit that I do adore that top {from Forever 21}. It’s this really flowy material that is just stunning; though I’m only 5’1, so it semi-fits me like a dress.

How often do you go shopping—either in-person or online?

A:
My credit card would love for me to say not that often; however, it’s me speaking, so I’ll be honest…every day. Please keep in mind that, as a fashion blogger, shopping is a form of research; therefore, I oftentimes write retail therapy off as such. But honestly, I do indulge in a bit of browsing at least once per day. Up until a few weeks ago, I have I had a really hectic courseload for school, so I find that a little shopping relaxes me quite a bit. I do most of my shopping online {my favorite sites are Shopbop, Zappos, Nordstrom, and Forever 21} because I don’t always have time to go shopping in-person; but that’s not to say that I don’t love to when I do have the chance.

What is your most favorite place of the moment to score new items?

A:
Zappos. I find that they have a ridiculously amazing selection of shoes, and I’m slightly addicted to the Free Overnight Shipping.

My new favorite nail color {Essie Penny Talk} coupled with my favorite accessory {the Infinity Ring} that I mentioned above. I take a lot of pictures of my hands / nails.

The new season signaled new colors for beauty items: what are your favorite fall nail colors? Are you a fan of nail art?

A:
This year I have found so many amazing new nail colors for fall that have completely taken me away from my standard fall beauty fare {oxblood}. My top five favorites are Essie’s Penny Talk – which is an incredible rose gold/new copper penny chrome metallic that will actually look awesome year-round; OPI’s Ski Teal We Drop – which is actually from a few years back, but new to me; Sally Hansen Lustre Shine Lava – everyone needs this shade, it is an awesome color-shifting duochrome/multichrome; JULEP’s Toni – a grayish purple that I love; and OPI’s Candlelight – gorgeous, gorgeous egg yolk yellow that is very fall yellow {as opposed to summer yellow}.

While I love nail polish, I can’t say that I’m the biggest fan of nail art {aside from an accent nail}. I just prefer the look and uniformity of a solid {utterly amazing} color.

Where do you go to get inspired?

A:
I’m very inspired by the street style of certain supermodels {Rosie Huntington-Whiteley especially}; and am literally obsessed with Isabel Marant. On days when my style leans towards the bohemian side, it’s all inspired by Ms. Marant. I actually run a Tumblr site {Bobby Pins & Bellinis} that, essentially, serves as the Inspiration Board for cat eyes & skinny jeans, and features pictures of some of my favorite looks.

Aside from supermodel street style and the runway, I love, love gaining inspiration when I’m at cafes – especially if they’re located in big cities that are full of so many different walks of life. There’s something about the charming ambiance of a café juxtaposed against the stylish hustle and bustle of random people coming and going that I find irresistible.

Also {I know, my inspiration list is long – sorry!}…the novella Breakfast at Tiffany’s by Truman Capote never fails to inspire me. I am utterly captivated by that story, and feel as if I absorb a bit of Holly Golightly into my own personality with every re-read. Oddly enough, I have never seen the film – I’m worried that it will take away some of the magic of the book!

Why I love this picture? My makeup looked incredible that day {though you can’t see it very well in these shots}; and it was my first time wearing those boots {Halogen Brianna in Rust from Nordstrom}, that Owl Sweater/Sweatshirt from Target {which everyone I have encountered is obsessed with}; and those Forever 21 Jeans {which I actually found in my closet that morning – having owned them for two years without ever wearing them}.

If a stranger walking past you on the street was asked to describe your signature look in one word, what word would that be?

A:
You have no clue how long I spent trying to come up with an answer for this question, but I have finally settled on one…Low-Key Luxe. I love my denim {low-key}, but I never leave the house without heels, and sparkly jewelry {luxe}.

{Just for fun} UGGS: Yay or nay?

A:
I wear them around the house as slippers; therefore, nay. For me, they’re just a bit too bulky to be chic/stylish/cute. I think there are too many comfortable alternatives that give off a stylish vibe {i.e. Hunter Boots} without, for lack of a better word, being sloppy. That said; have you checked out the new super-stylish UGG pieces – shearling booties and such? Totally cute!

{beauty board} perfect hues for your baby blues...

beauty board: blue eyes
From left-to-right.

Megan Fox is living proof that blue eyes can seductively smolder when accented accordingly. The warmth of terracotta shadows draw out the iciness of the blue, creating a contrast that will virtually stop people in their tracks; while turquoise and navies accentuate the blue of the eye, making the color more piercing. Bronze liners and shadows are a cool way for blue-eyed bombshells to play with metallics; and if you’re seeking vibrant color, you can’t go wrong with a purple palette that serves as a means of enhancing your hue. Subtly highlight with liners or mascaras for daytime; or go all-out with a bright, bold eye when the night falls.

NOTD: China Glaze Urban Night

This is two coats of China Glaze’s Urban Night from the Metro {Uptown} Collection. Dark, Eggplant Purple Creme.

I love the opacity of this color! While I used two coats for these pictures, I can honestly say that it was almost a one-coater {seriously, who doesn't love that?}. If you're a purple fan, chances are this shade won't be terribly unique for your collection; however, it's a nice, vampy plum hue that's a nice change from the standard oxblood reds you see during the fall months. For those of you who are worried that it's too dark {i.e. black in some lighting}, rest-assured...this one always, always looks purple. Also pertinent...it looks gorgeous with silver jewelry.

dear you...shine like a crystal

Shimmer in 2013!
ONE by Faubourg du Temple Twill Jacket with Sequin Sleeves + camilla and marc Great Fear Jacket / Vest in Bronze / Black + Juicy Couture Palladium Brocade Blazer in Gold Metallic + Blaque Label Long Studded Jacket in Navy + ONE by Maloom Blue Sequins Jacket in Blue + La Fee Verte Justine Disco Blazer in Gold

Once the holidays have come and gone, I, for one, have a very difficult time separating myself from the world of sparkle. For those few brief weeks flanking Christmas and New Year’s, we are served sequins, glitter, and glistening paillettes on a silver platter; only to have them torn away from us and tucked up for the following year all too soon - a subtle thievery synonymous with being offered a mug of hot cocoa that lacks both frothy whipped cream and melting marshmallows. I have found just one solution to the problem…the addition of brilliant {and downright chic} cover-ups that mask themselves as a casual essential yet keep us shimmering from day to night; year beginning to year end.

Slip an ultra-sporty spangled varsity piece on with cutoff denim shorts and ankle boots for an effortless, model-off-duty look; or toss a gilded brocade design over a pair of black skinnies and a plain white tee to dress up a casual girls' night out style. Just be prepared to turn heads...after all, no one can resist the shining power of a crystal.

I’m not one to refuse the opportunity to wear denim; but while I love the look of an oversized knit coupled with sultry skinnies for the daytime hours, when the sun goes down nothing says urbanity like a pair of snakelike leather pants that slither along the dips and curves of one’s feminine physique.

A suede, pointed-toe pump and oversized slouchy knit offsets the liquid look of the leather by playing up textures; while a chunky charm bracelet stacked alongside a spiked bangle serves as the ultimate juxtaposition between flirty and fierce. Pop your evening essentials into a sophisticatedly-printed box clutch {adorably reminiscent of London-found phone boxes}; and finish off the look with a vibrant red polish to complement the Dijon hue of the sweater.

{beauty board} highlight your...hazel eyes!

Knowing what colors can truly accentuate your eyes can be somewhat challenging, so I thought that this would be a fun series to start. Over the next few weeks, I am going to focus on a different eye color each week - hazel, blue, brown, and green {green is the eye color of yours truly}; bringing you different palettes, products, and shadow shades that will highlight your charming color in the haute-est way possible. Beginning with…hazel!

365 Beauty Guide: Hazel Eyes

From left-to-right.

Hazel eyes are incredibly fun to play with as you have the option of bringing out the umber/topaz/golden hues with bronze shadows {as Nicole Richie often does with her drop dead gorgeous eyes}, or you can go in a completely different direction, drawing out the green undertones of your peepers with eggplant and moss green shades. Either way, the effect is jaw-dropping; and allows you to change up your look from day-to-night, or simply day-to-day.

NOTD: Illamasqua DWS

This is two coats of ILLAMASQUA’s DWS. Cement Grey Creme.

I have an inexplicable obsession with gray nail polishes, but this is my favorite of them all as it is a very light gray, sky leaning shade, as opposed to having dark {i.e. brown} undertones. This is the only ILLAMASQUA color I own thus far, but the formula is incredible – it applies perfectly, giving you a gorgeous smooth, glossy finish. This, to me, is a perfect winter color; but it also works well year-round. If you don’t own a gray shade yet, I definitely have to recommend this one.

Accessories: IndulgentDesigns Sterling Silver Infinity Knot Ring (worn above-the-knuckle) via Etsy.
