Ciaté Mini Mani Month Set Review {Part 1}

Despite the fact that it was made as an advent calendar, the day after Christmas, I bought myself the Ciaté Mini Mani Month Set from Sephora {which is no longer available; but the one from Nordstrom, linked here, is almost identical}, because the sale price was too good to resist, and I had been coveting it for months. If you follow me on Instagram @cateyesandskinnyjeans you know that the last thing I need is more nail polish; but I'm a sucker for cute packaging and had to have it.

The collection includes 18 Mini Paint Pots, in addition to 6 Mini Effects Paint Pots {caviar pearls, sequins, glitter}. Today, I'm reviewing/swatching the first 8 days of the set, as well as a few of the effects Paint Pots {which are so much fun}.

Snow Globe {Day 1} + Sugar Plum {Day 6}

Snow Globe is a Holographic Glitter Top Coat. It's full of varying sizes of iridescent glass flecks that distribute evenly in just one coat. Snow Globe could easily be layered over any polish shade; but I loved how it looked with this pastel purple. I found the formula to be slightly thick - not unmanageable; but it takes a little effort to even out. This is 1 coat.

Boudoir {Day 2} + Dallas Dolly {Day 19}

Boudoir is your Classic Red. Perfect for the holiday season, or a sophisticated year-round look. I am not a red polish person; but I loved this color on. My only qualm was how sheer it was. Indoors, it looked opaque; but when I took these photographs in natural light, I realized that I had a lot of VNL - not a fan of that. This is 2 coats.

On the accent finger I am wearing Dallas Dolly {one of those Effects Paint Pots I mentioned earlier} which is a mix of loose hexagonal glitter in red and gold mixed with very thin strips of green/blue bar glitter. Again, this is loose; there is no base. To apply you paint your nail with the desired shade, then pour the sequins over the nail, and press gently to keep them in place. You don't have to use top coat over the sequins, but I did {and recommend doing so}.

Amazing Gracie {Day 3} + Caviar Metallic Pearls - Silver {Day 4}

Amazing Gracie is a Sheer Pink Creme. I love this color - absolutely love it. It is the quintessential girly hue. What I am not crazy about is the formula. It's very sheer. Buildable, yes; but sheer nonetheless. You have to add coat after coat after coat in order to make it opaque, which is just too time-consuming. On the other hand, if you like a clean, French Tip like mani, you'd be very happy with this shade. This is 4 coats.

Caviar Metallic Pearls - Silver...the name says it all. These are another Effects Paint Pot offering; and one of the things that put Ciaté on the map. Basically, this is a bottle of loose mini bead pearls. When I say mini...I. Mean. Mini. {I suggest using them over a disposable plate to minimize the mess - and there will be a mess}. Like with the Dallas Dolly Sequins, you simply pour these over wet polish, and push gently to stick. If you want them to last for more than 1 hour, use 2 coats of top coat {that is my secret for keeping them intact for a few days}. Gorgeous wedding nails combo, right?

Hoopla {Day 5} + Caviar Pearls Midnight in Manhattan {Day 8}

Hoopla is a Summer-Perfect Coral Creme. I keep seeing Hoopla described as peach, but I find that to be inaccurate - the orange base definitely makes it a true coral / salmon pink. Formula-wise, Hoopla is super easy to work with - just make sure you allow enough time to dry between coats, otherwise you'll create bald spots. This is 2 coats.

Midnight in Manhattan is another mini paint pot of caviar pearls - these ones being a mix of Black, White, and Iridescent shades {see those little purple-looking pearls? Those would be the iridescent bits}. I love this combo because it's all girly and then bam! a little bit of edge. Application is identical for all caviar pearls. Again I stress...use top coat to keep them intact.

Sugar Plum {Day 6}

Sugar Plum is a Pastel Lilac Creme. This is my new favorite lilac shade - one that will be getting a lot of use come springtime. Out of all of the Ciaté Paint Pots I have tried so far, the formula of Sugar Plum remains my favorite. It's a little bit thick, but very easy to control. This is 2 coats.

Main Stage {Day 7}

Main Stage is a Rich Magenta Creme. I was worried that I would encounter those sheer issues that plagued Boudoir with this shade, but it wound up being perfect. Main Stage is similar to Hoopla in terms of formula and dry time. It's not as thick as Sugar Plum, but still hearty enough to give amazing coverage. If you like the color pink, but want something more sophisticated and grown-up, you'll love Main Stage. This is 2 coats.

Do you have a favorite, or do you love them all?

Rose. It's a grown-up version of pink, if you will. More first kiss blush; less Bazooka bubblegum. Elie Saab's Spring 2014 RTW is the perfect example - lacy rompers, high-slit maxi skirts, high-waist trousers...all done in a romantic rose-toned color scheme that juxtaposes sophisticated femininity with whimsical playfulness. NOTD: Nicole By OPI Gumdrops Collection in Cinna-Man of My Dreams

Two coats of Nicole By OPI Gumdrops Collection Cinna-Man of My Dreams. Finely Textured Red / Brown Shimmer.

If you're seeking unique, Cinna-Man of My Dreams is it. From afar, it looks like a red / brown / cranberry-based shimmer; but it is so much more. Up close you can see that it is packed with red, gold, and blue micro-glitter that gives it this gorgeous fall effect. Formula was perfect - opaque, self-leveling, non-scratchy, and full of depth.

To note: The shades in Nicole By OPI's Gumdrops Collection are similar to those found within OPI's Liquid Sand Collection with the exception that the Gumdrops texture is more finely-milled. So if you aren't crazy about how textured the Liquid Sand Collection is, you may really love the Gumdrops offerings.

{beauty board} purple haze

purple
Purple is a little bit sugar, a little bit spice. On one hand, it's demure, dainty, and feminine - just a stone's throw from ultra-girly pink; on the other, it's bold, daring, and sultry. It's this versatility that makes it such an unstoppable color for eyes. A shimmery violet around the inner corner brightens; while a dark and dusty plum {I regularly use Too Faced's Voulez-Vous from the Boudoir Eyes Soft & Sexy Shadow Collection} lends a smoky, mysterious touch. Here, 5 amazing palettes for creating a bold, beautiful, ultraviolet gaze:

purple palettes
ONE: Rimmel London in PURPLE REIGN {$1.49} TWO: Lancôme in AMETHYST GLAM {$50.00} THREE: Yves Saint Laurent in 4 LILAC SKY {$58.00} FOUR: SEPHORA COLLECTION in 06 ULTRAVIOLET {$19.00} FIVE: NYX in XOXO, MONA {$7.99}

If you're iffy about purple eyeshadow because you: a} don't know if it will work for you {I promise it will}; or b} are unsure of how to use it, Rimmel London's Glam Eyes HD Eyeshadow in Purple Reign needs to be on your radar. The mini how-to on the back of the packaging makes application a breeze; and the price point makes it an affordable test drive option. Speaking of affordability...

...the NYX Love in Florence Eye Shadow Palette in Xoxo, Mona is fab if you're on a budget. The color payoff is incredible; and, bonus: it's a near-dupe for the luxurious Color Design 5 Shadow & Liner Palette in Amethyst Glam from Lancôme {which I highly recommend if you love shimmer}.

Yves Saint Laurent's OMBRES 5 LUMIÈRES - 5 Colour Harmony For Eyes in 4 Lilac Sky is one of my personal favorites. It's similar to Lancôme's Amethyst Glam; the difference being that it contains a matte purple shade that works so well in tying the pearly / shimmery violets and lilacs in the palette together. Last, but definitely not least...the MicroSmooth Baked Eyeshadow Trio in 06 Ultraviolet from SEPHORA COLLECTION. If you're not great at blending, this trio was made for you. The baked consistency makes it super easy to use; plus it allows for wet or dry application. In my opinion, this is one of the best all-in-ones available.

OPI Mariah Carey Holiday 2013 Liquid Sand Mini Trio # 2 Dark Review

Last week I showed you swatches of the Mini Trio # 1: Light from the Mariah Carey Holiday 2013 Collection Liquid Sand; and today I'm bring you swatches of the Mini Trio # 2: Dark. Without further ado...

Two coats of OPI Kiss Me At Midnight from the Mariah Carey Holiday Liquid Sand Collection. Frosted Ice Blue.

Kiss Me At Midnight has restored my love of blue polish. It. Is. Brilliant. The vivid blue base is reminiscent of all things winter; and the large silver glitter throughout adds just the right amount of sparkle. From looking at the bottle alone, I thought ooh, I like that...; then I put it on and it was such an intense feeling of L-O-V-E - I could barely bring myself to remove it for my next mani, and that never happens.

Two coats of OPI It's Frosty Outside from the Mariah Carey Holiday Liquid Sand Collection. Frosted Icy Silver.

It's Frosty Outside is basically the epitome of holiday polish colors - it's like wearing tinsel on your nails. The mix here is finely ground silver glitter {don't worry, it's easy to remove}, with hexagonal silver sequins tossed in to really make it sparkle. This one is hyper shimmery; so if you like a lot of nail bling, It's Frosty Outside is sure to please.

Two coats of OPI Emotions from the Mariah Carey Holiday Liquid Sand Collection. Coal Black.

I. Love. It. Emotions is proof that all holiday polish collections need a black, coal-like shade. This one is flat black {though it does contain somewhat undetectable glitter pieces}. No shimmer. No sparkle. Just a textured matte that is spectacular. If this is the type of coal that Santa left in stockings, you would surely welcome it. Truth.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
Like with the Mariah Carey Holiday 2013 Liquid Sand Mini Trio # 2 Dark; I only bought this trio for one color: Kiss Me At Midnight - which remains my favorite. It's Frosty Outside is gorgeous for the winter season. I feel as if I would have appreciated it more had I not been burned out by the influx of silver shades I had already been seeing / wearing for a month or two prior to trying it out; but it's still gorgeous. Emotions comes in at number two as my fave in this trio because it is just. so. chic.

Of the two trio sets, I feel as if # 1 Light was more focused on champagne-like, party-apropos neutral hues; whereas this trio {# 2 Dark} fell more towards winter / New Year's shades. Neither trio was overly-holiday due to the fact that they lacked the typical reds and greens; which is why I feel I liked both of them so much - they are perfect for year-round. I highly recommend this trio - especially if you're looking for a good mix of shades with an interesting finish.

NOTD: VS PINK Nail Paint in Never Too Bronzed

Two coats of VS PINK Nail Paint Never Too Bronzed. Metallic Rose Gold Foil.

This. Is. Stunning. I literally could not stop oohing and aahing over this shade the entire time I wore it. So much so that I didn't want to take it off. The name is slightly misleading. Never Too Bronzed is a gorgeous rose gold - plain and simple. It's the type of foil that has a mirror metallic element to it {think those sparkly Minx Nails}.

Formula was in-cre-di-ble. This is the second shade I have tried from the VS PINK Nail Paint line {see Teal With It here}, and I am, once again, completely impressed with not just the color; but the formula, and ease of use as a whole. Highly, highly, highly recommended.

DOVE® + Nicole by OPI® Dark Chocolate-Inspired Nail Lacquer Kit Review

I posted the Press Release regarding the DOVE® Chocolate + Nicole by OPI® Ring in the New Year with an Irresistible Sweepstakes this past weekend {so check that out if you want to win these shades for yourself}; and today I am so excited to share swatches of these colors with you, because they are part of one of the yummiest nail polish duos ever. And I'm not just saying that because they were shipped to me with two bags of DOVE Chocolate. Seriously. Onto the swatches!

Better After Dark is a Milk Chocolate with Microshimmer. This one caught my eye first because the color truly looks like melted milk chocolate - right down to the slightly red undertones and subtle glistening shimmer that tend to appear when you melt chocolate for baking. The shimmer is only discernible in certain light; but when it does make an appearance...swoon. Formula was great here - self-leveling, opaque, and easy to work with. This is 2 coats.

Promises in the Dark is a Dark Chocolate Creme. This is a unique one. From a distance, Promises in the Dark looks black; in sunlight it looks slightly hunter green. The true color? A rich, dark chocolate, coffee bean brown. No shimmer. The formula here was fantastic. A heavy hand could get away with using one coat for this shade; I used 2 coats here for opacity. Make sure your first coat dries completely before applying the second; otherwise it drags and gets patchy.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
Brown is not a color that is high on my polish radar; but I liked both of these shades. Promises in the Dark wound up being my favorite from this duo, as it's a shade that I have never seen before {so no dupes to speak of}; plus, it serves as a nice subtle change from your standard blacks and black-reds.

As I mentioned earlier, I did receive two types of DOVE Chocolate with these polishes - Sea Salt Caramel Dark Chocolate and Dark Chocolate. Can I just say that these flavors perfectly capture the nail shades in this duo? I couldn't have come up with a better pairing. Honestly, I would buy far more chocolate if each bag came accompanied with a nail lacquer. Just saying.

What do you think of this collaboration? Do you have a favorite shade?

NOTD: OPI Mariah Carey Holiday Liquid Sand in Silent Stars Go By

Two coats of OPI Silent Stars Go By from the Mariah Carey Holiday Liquid Sand Collection. Taupe / Nude Champagne.

When this collection was first released, I kept hearing that Silent Stars Go By was a near dupe of Make Him Mine. It most certainly is not. In fact, if you ask me, it's not even close.

Make Him Mine is pure rose gold; while Silent Stars Go By is...office-apropos glitter. It's a shimmering take on the typical neutral, mixing taupe / nude shades, adding a mauve / pale pink undertone, and tossing in the perfect amount of glitter to make the combo sparkle like champagne.

The second coat is where the mauve hue truly comes into play. Coincidentally enough, the second coat also serves as the finale for opaque bliss.

leith clark x warby parker

MARVA Eyeglasses Cobalt Leaf

Leith Clark has worked wonders as the stylist, editor, and founder of the British mag LULA; now she's doing the very same for Warby Parker - having signed on for the Leith Clark x Warby Parker collab of eyeglasses and sunglasses.

The 5-pair collection {available in optical and sunwear} harbors the same type of retro whimsy and charm seen in the pages of LULA; and stars actress Zoe Kazan in the vintage vibe lookbook.

As always with Warby Parker, for every pair of glasses sold, a pair is distributed to someone in need. A percentage from each Leith Clark x Warby Parker sale goes to Girl Up, a United Nations Foundation campaign mobilizing American girls to raise awareness and funds for UN programs that provide life-changing opportunities to girls around the world.

GRETA Eyeglasses - Crystal

"I like the 1960s, librarians, nerdy girls. I like glasses you had when you were a kid—or that your dad wore when you were a kid—and wearing them now. I like Bergman. Big thick glasses on a little, tiny face. When there are etchings or engravings or magically-made materials. I like pearls, brass, opera glasses. Everything being all violet. I like seeing the world with a pretty pink tint to it."

OPI Mariah Carey Holiday 2013 Liquid Sand Mini Trio # 1 Light Review

After falling in love with the OPI The Bond Girls Collection Liquid Sand Mini Set last year, I couldn't resist picking up all of the shades from the Mariah Carey Holiday 2013 Collection Liquid Sand. I rarely make it through a full bottle of nail polish, so I opted for the two Liquid Sand mini sets. Today I'm reviewing the Mini Trio # 1: Light; and in the next week or so I'll be reviewing the Mini Trio # 2: Dark.

Two coats of OPI Silent Stars Go By from the Mariah Carey Holiday Liquid Sand Collection. Taupe / Nude Champagne.

Silent Stars Go By is office-apropos glitter.

Two coats of OPI Make Him Mine from the Mariah Carey Holiday Liquid Sand Collection. Soft Rose Gold.

Make Him Mine is like jewelry for your nails. The color is absolutely breathtaking - think a perfectly flushed, fresh-from-the-slopes ski bunny cheek mingling with fine silver sparkle. It's a shade that manages to maintain that rosy glow without crossing into pink territory. Formula was fantastic - user-friendly, long-lasting, and swoon-worthy {these are a few of my favorite things...}.

Two coats of OPI Baby Please Come Home from the Mariah Carey Holiday Liquid Sand Collection. Lilac / Lavender-Toned Charcoal Gray.

Just look at it...have you ever seen anything so pretty? The color is absolutely stunning - a charcoal gray with lilac / lavender undertones {which are not obvious in all light}, and intertwined with silver.

As with all liquid sands...the formula was fantastic. Two coats for complete opacity, and no chips, or tipwear to speak of {just the way I like it}.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
Initially I went for this trio solely for Baby Please Come Home, thinking that I wouldn't even try the two additional shades; but, I wound up loving them all. For me, Baby Please Come Home and Make Him Mine are the standout shades, and my favorites from this trio; though Silent Stars Go By would be perfect if you were looking for a neutral with kick. I thought it was clever that OPI opted for a less typical holiday collection; using pinks and charcoals as opposed to your standard reds and greens. It was a nice change; and definitely one that can be used year-round. Total love!

What do you think of the Mariah Carey Holiday 2013 Liquid Sand Mini Trio # 1 Light? Do you have a favorite shade or do you want them all?

the army jacket

army
Not to be confused with the military jacket; the army jacket is a touch tomboy with a chic-meets-unfussy high-fashion flair. Pair it with denim and dresses, pumps or brogues. The slightly boxy fit makes it cool, casual, and a charming way to accessorize anything in your wardrobe; while the olive hue keeps it sophisticated {but never boring}. Seeking one for yourself? Here are 5 to love:

army 2
ONE: Current/Elliott the infantry jacket {$268.00} TWO: Faubourg du Temple sequin sleeve twill jacket {$118.00} THREE: Lily Aldridge for Velvet by Graham & Spencer ruby army jacket {$150.00} FOUR: Current/Elliott the lone soldier jacket {$388.00} FIVE: Rag & Bone/JEAN the pump jacket {$385.00}

Faubourg du Temple's Sequin Sleeve Twill Jacket and Current/Elliott's The Lone Soldier Jacket are amazing choices if you love the look of menswear-inspired pieces, but prefer them to be slightly more feminized. The sequin sleeves on the former and stud embellishments on the latter add the perfect unique, girly twist without forsaking the tomboy vibe.

The Infantry Jacket by Current/Elliott is fab if you want to go all-out slouchy and oversized; while the cropped aesthetic and bomber-like fit of Rag & Bone/JEAN's The Pump Jacket make it a casual choice for the girl just dipping her toes into the army trend. And if you can't decide on fit, look no further than the Ruby Army Jacket from Lily Aldridge for Velvet by Graham & Spencer, which gives you the best of both worlds - a little bit slouchy, a little bit cropped, yet a gorgeous piece for any fashion maven.
