Julia Child

But I digress; it is a known fact that, in any given situation, the grass is often greener on the other side. Even so, as the fashion-forward femme fatales we are, it is our duty to embrace our height – no matter how many inches or lack thereof are present – and stun with our style; taunt with our tempting good looks; and wow with our wardrobes. Yet we must do so in a way that is proper for our given elevation point. While limitations enshroud the closets of the petite, such restrictions are rarely encountered by the lofty ladies amongst us.
When it comes to height and the world of fashion, anything goes! Tall allows you to don almost any piece of frippery that catches your eye; the key is to be aware of your body shape, embrace the length of your form, and do everything in your power to accentuate your sensational stature. A task, kitty cats, which is far easier to accomplish than it actually sounds!

Solid colors retain the ability to create the illusion that one is more svelte than they truly are; they provide a false appearance of added length which serves to make one’s form more fluid and flowing – a trick of the eye which works to make the tall girl look even more runway ready than patterns or bold prints would. Such a streamlining of style makes you effuse confidence and aplomb in any situation; whilst subtly bragging to the world that you couldn’t be more proud of your prominent height.

♥To the Max The maxi dress, like over the knee boots, is one of those fundamentals in life that can be downright intimidating in the beginning stages. There is something quite domineering and frightening about the extreme length which it proffers so eloquently that leads one to take a step back and mull over the winsomeness and capabilities of such a style. Do me a favor, darlings and halt contemplation of all kinds; as a skyscraping siren, owning a maxi dress is not an option for you, it is an absolute matter of necessity.

♥Waisting Away Regardless of what anyone may or may not tell you, a high waist will forever be in style. There is truly no more classy and sophisticated way to make yourself look slimmer and taller than with the assistance of a pair of high waisted anything accoutering your lower half – be it Alice + Olivia’s Pinstripe Pleated Shorts with High Waist or So Low’s High Waist Leggings.
Mae West
A high waist is the universal way for all women to add inches to their stature. Given the fact that you are already a tall drink of water, of course, this may sound completely unappealing; but such a look truly has its benefits – even for a lady of length, like yourself. Tagging inches onto your already boisterous height via a high waistline elongates your figure in its entirety making one appear more genteel and opulent; whilst slimming the body all at once – an array of elements which serve to make you more effectual in your appearance, and contribute a splash of authoritative audaciousness to your entire demeanor.

We pint-sized firecrackers often find ourselves the victim of looking short, stumpy, and stocky when styled in sweaters, t-shirts, cardigans, tunics, or typical t-shirts that fall anywhere below the hip; but you have the height for such a design. You possess the tallness required to do justice to these particular pieces; therefore, embrace them!
Martha Graham
Pieces like Splendid’s Distressed Fleece V Neck Tunic, mark’s Cold Shoulder Top, and Rachel Pally’s Oversized Swing Tank harbor the ability to lengthen your torso and shorten your legs ever so slightly; a look that would be fairly unflattering on someone shorter, but which only serves to make you more glamorous. Do keep in mind that long tops have the potential to stunt the growth even of the tallest temptress; so use them wisely. But please, do use them – you will not be sorry my loves!

Stephen Fry
Dolls don’t you dare lock those mini dresses or bandage skirts away! Yes, you are tall, but that is no reason to stifle your style and steer clear of particular designs simply to please others; the secret is to guilelessly be mindful of the length of your more flirty, feminine bottom half bliss. Skirts and dresses will undoubtedly look shorter on you than they will on someone not as blessed in the height department; therefore, retain modesty in your wardrobe by using your fingertips as a guide for length, or merely incorporate longer looks, like pencil skirts, into your everyday style. They may effuse professionalism, but with the right accessories, their playful side comes out making them even more cheeky than their shorter sidekicks!
♥Ruler of the Empire The way I see it loves, the fashion world is like a fairy godmother of sorts; whereas the empire waist acts in the place of the magic wand, casting a bit of alluring enchantment upon anyone with the good sense to accouter themselves in such a design.
Jean Genet
While empire waist dresses and tops retain the ability to be universally flattering on women of all shapes and sizes; when worn by the taller ladies there is a tad more elegance proffered which is imposing and monarchical, making the wearer radiate the same sort of stately presence as that synonymous with the members of the British Royal Family. Empire waists, like that seen upon Juicy Couture’s Shirred Empire Paisley Dress or Wilt’s Empire Tunic, bring a hoity-toity hint of haute couture to the high-reaching beauty’s wardrobe, making one appear more willowy and elongated than a fitted piece would allow; whilst permitting the pretty in question to retain complete comfort from day to night!

I know better than many that heels oftentimes make one feel more grown-up in their style; but flats have the ability to be just as sophisticated, feminine, and polished as a pump, as long as one knows well enough to search for perfection. Many times typical ballerinas grow boring in their aesthetic, and begin to lose their identity, making the wearer feel as if they have fallen into a footwear rut, and leading them to pursue something a little more fabulous, which often arises in the form of a stiletto. The key to sublimity is to think outside the box. Seek out pieces with personality that veers away from the ordinary silhouette of the ballerina. Show your spirit fingers with Steven’s Jezebel Jazz Shoes; wrap your mind, and wardrobe, around the model of menswear via Elizabeth and James’ Wicked Suede Oxford Flats; pay tribute to retro architecture’s like that seen on Alexander Wang’s Ines Suede Oxfords. Adorning your tootsies in savvy, slightly offbeat styles is the number one way to feel both mature and magnificent!
Robert Frost
Of course, should you feel plagued with the desire to pump it up, do not at all allow your height to stand in the way. Wear your Tory Burch Julianne Open Toe Logo Wedges with wild abandonment; don your Dolce Vita Trinity Leopard Platform Pumps to make your silhouette more daring; and flaunt your Paul & Joe Sister Perine Zip Front Pumps with your finest frippery. Just make sure to pop a pair of CitySlips in your purse should you encounter a wardrobe malfunction of the footwear variety, or simply want to soothe your pained, yet perkily pedicured paws after trotting around town styled in stilettos!

♥Looks for the Leggy Lady Darlings, I truly hope that you’re not overwhelmed at the thought of trying to accentuate your covetable height; but just in case you’re feeling slightly numb by everything that you have learned, here are a few complete ensembles created with you and only you in mind to get you started!
♥Plush Faux Leather Liquid Leggings topped with Mike & Chris’ Hunter Tunic in Heather Red, and worn with Jeffrey Campbell’s Lubbock Suede Over the Knee Boots in Black.
♥Juicy Couture’s Shirred Empire Paisley Dress coupled with Frye’s Rider Pull On Boots, and tuleste market’s Croc Bangle Set.
Jean Houston

ReplyDeleteCan you explain this?
I love empire waste shirts and dresses, I do think that it enhences our curves very well for any body types. haha I always wish I was 2 inches taller, but I suppose I'm average height/on the taller side for a standard asian already. sigh... the grass is always greener on the other side!
ReplyDeletecan i just say that i love that you quoted julia child. just watched julie & julia last night...and i loved every minute of it.
ReplyDeleteErika, your style tips are surely the best on Blogger? J'adore them!
ReplyDeleteI am a tall girl myself, and have always embraced my height. My Mr is also tall which helps, of course. Our children will be giants I'm sure.
Wow, love that first quotation, had never heard that before!
ReplyDeleteOne thing I will say is that high-waists not always so flattering! It's about being aware of one's body shape, as you state. For me, a high waist accentuates how short my body is (it is SHORT, even compared with those of normal height), so I rarely wear a high waist.
Nice to see a focus on taller girls - I have come to terms with being 5 foot 9, I wouldn't want to be any taller but I have often envied the shorter girl. Whilst I will never come across as short or cute, I can, if necessary, command the attention of a room on entry (5.5inch heels FTW) and can be graceful and elegant and glamourous much more easily.
Oh my goodness... you're my hero. Thanks for posting something that I've been looking for around the internet for ages...
ReplyDeleteShort women unite!
Great advice, as always, Erika!
ReplyDeletethe style tips are so spot on! love how you really went into detail with them. love solid sophisticate the most!

Love this post! I'm quite tall myself (6ft 2 in stilettos!) so I do have to bear in mind that what I wear will probably be noticed considering my height. Being tall isn't necessarily a blessing however, and there are often times I wish I was a lot shorter. For a start, patterned tights/leggings look ridiculous on my giraffe legs, and it's an actual nightmare finding jeans which don't cut off at the ankle. I also have the skirt-far-too-short problem. :/ These tips are awesome though, thanks for sharing!

Great photos in this post. If you want to be tall for a few hours just slip on some platform heels. I do feel that high waisted skirts make you look taller and now I see that I wasn't wrong about that =) I really liked this post and the quote at the very beginning. xoxo

Interesting post !
ReplyDeletewhat a great post. i love how you gave tips for both height and lack of height. the looks you put together at the end of the post are fantastic! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is an incredible post! The quotes included were great, but the overall post was fantastic! The encouragement to embrace one's self and the tips on how to do just so are definitely read-worthy.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I'm despreately searching for a pair of oxfords, but I can't seem to find a pair that fit right (big feet are a downside of being tall I guess).
ReplyDeleteI'm not very tall(average like) and it's great, because I can wear high heels without any problem:)
ReplyDeleteaww and I have tall friends who can't wear heels:)
great post dear
As you know, I am nowhere near being tall. I used to wish I was, but I'm happy with my short stature now. :) Either way, I cannot deny that these are excellent style tips!
ReplyDeleteI love all the pieces you selected, especially those Elizabeth and James Blair Jewel Thong Sandals. So pretty!
I'm a shorty and I still rock the maxis...I can't help it...I lurve them!
ReplyDeletei'm happy to read about your support of the maxi dress...i want to wear mine for years to come!
ReplyDeletei haven't tried it as a Winter look yet (with boots & sweater), but i will.
xoxo alison
I love these style tips... though I'm not that tall, I will surely follow your tips to the letter. I always like to think that I'm tall for an Asian.
ReplyDeleteI'm very short 5'3 to be exact. I wish I was tall. But however, love the gold shoes and heart tights. Might be a very interesting combination to style. Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday :D
♡,
Jessica
loving the heart tights x
ReplyDeleteThis is such a fabulous post Erika!!! It is beautifully written, as always, but even more importantly it is chock full of style tips of such quality that I feel it needs to be proclaimed as style gospel to the world. Well done!
ReplyDeleteI love your tips as always! This was a great idea for a post! xo

So so great post dear Erika !
ReplyDeleteI'm a shortie, and proud of it! lol I think that while growing up wishing I had a few more inches, my height is actually a blessing. Ciara's "One two step" mentions my exact height, heels always work, and finding guys taller than me is rarely a problem.
ReplyDeleteBeing Tall can bee a plus or minus. Sure, if you have Great Leggs! But, more of you can also emphasize more of your faults for more to notice.
ReplyDeleteOne must bee xtra careful when deciding what 2 wear.
after 27 (almost 28 years, eek!) of being short and tiny, i've come to learn what and what not looks good on my stumpy body.
ReplyDeleteand after that long, i've also learned to appreciate my shortness.
i always say...i sometimes wish i was tall and then i'm reminded of tall people dancing and i change my mind.
haha it helps.
You are wonderful for writing this! I always need to grab a breath of personal confidence before stepping out in short skirts & dresses because I fear I am just too damn tall! (i'm not even that tall, really, just a humble 5"7!)
ReplyDeleteBeing on the short side myself this was amazinggg to read!
ReplyDeleteGreat post as always Erika. At 5'7", I think this is the perfect height. I'm tall enough to carry a lot of looks but no so tall that I tower over everyone else. Except at work. I think the average height of most women in my office hovers around 5'3". And I wear 3" heels so yeah, some of them have an interesting vantage point :)
ReplyDeleteThe other great thing about being taller ... 5 or 10 pounds doesn't look like a whole lot ... at 5', it looks like 20.
Have a great week!
Oh dear, it's monotonous colours, high waists and no oxfords for me... but maybe I can reason myself, if not into 6, then perhaps 3 inches extra height? Sabine x
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I have really long, super skinny bird legs lol. They always make me very self conscious so this kind of post in exactly the inspiration i need to go out a bear my bird legs :)
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I am tall and it definitely has some disadvantages, like finding jeans that are long enough or dresses that don't show our booty :)
ReplyDeletei love this post!! Such a great topic.
ReplyDeleteI am about 5-5, and I love being in the middle; however, when I was younger with a best friend that was nearly six-feet tall, I was a little jealous when every boy made a big deal about her height. But then I realized I wouldn't have been able to date most of the boys in our small town, so then I went back to liking my height.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the height-accentuation tips!
Everytime you blog there's always something insightful you manage to share. This entry had so many I can't possibly mention all the ones that stood out for me. thanks for sharing once again!
ReplyDeleteGosh, I will take anything to be taller! How tall are you, out of curiousity?
ReplyDeleteXOXOX

nice post! I love how much though and detail you put in
ReplyDeletei'm usually ok with being short but this post made me wish i were inches and inches taller... (or at least average height)! lovely, lovely ideas my dear :)
ReplyDeleteUm, those LAMB shoes are pretty much my dream shoes right now. What I wouldn't give for a fantastic pair of white lace-ups. Want them.
ReplyDeleteI love that sheer top and lovely heart tights!!
ReplyDeleteI'm tall within the confines of my friends, 5'8 when others are barely 5 feet. I reduce my sexy sky high heels because I'm dubbed as an amazon woman; however I will now use your "glamazon" term.
ReplyDeleteI do, however, love my height because nothing is sexier or classier than mile long stems.
I love this post Erika!
i would love to be a little taller :( I'm 5'1 ... guh. my roommate's 5'11 ! our friends always call us 1/4 and 3/4 ... its their humourous way of saying your other half.

The grass IS always greener. Dude, you are going to work for Vogue one day. Or W. Or whatever you want.
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful ideas, love the pinstripe shorts!! The corset necklace is also amazing.
ReplyDeleteHope you had a great weekend, my Love!!! ♥

Great post. Love the quotes!
ReplyDeleteLove this post! Anything to help me look long and lean works for me! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post!! I am a short person with a larger chest and I find it so hard to find clothing. But this fall, I started to see what I needed to do to make my clothing work for me. Most of your tips are what I had to realize. Great job!
ReplyDeletethis is such an awesome post!!! as someone who is vertically challenged, all of these tips are helpful!
ReplyDeleteI'm only 5 feet (yes, a midget haha) but I seriously WANT to sew a maxi dress. :O
ReplyDeleteIt's so true, the grass always appears greener. I'm always whining about wishing I were taller, the hubs shudders at this because he hates the thought of me having big feet/hands that come with height, LOL.
ReplyDeleteBut I always think an extra 2 inches couldn't hurt...though then he'd be too short for me (6') because I still like him being taller by 4-6 inches when I'm in heels :)
xo
And now I'm thinking about what life could have been like if I wasn't 5'7"! ;-)
ReplyDeleteOoooh, I would have loved to be slightly taller than I am: but like you said: its time to embrace my height no matter what.
ReplyDeletewonderful, love the black tight leather pants and the black pair of shoes, I guess I'm just into blacks
