Style Secrets: Meg Cabot

You can blame her, you know; Meg Cabot that is. After all, she’s the one responsible for my incessant urge to wear dazzling jeweled tiaras wherever I go. Come to think of it, she is accountable for many of the slightly quirky habits I’ve retained from my adolescence, given the fact that much of my formative years were spent holed up in my bedroom, my nose buried deep within books I believed to be written entirely about me, a la The Princess Diaries. Fine, so I lacked the royal title, or the height of Princess Mia; but, at the time, I was a Doc Marten-wearing vegetarian navigating the vile waters of high school algebra who believed that she was my fictional counterpart – as I’m sure many of you did; don’t even try to deny it! But I digress; darlings, we may not, in all actuality, be Princess Mia (or, for that matter, the plus-sized, ex-pop-star-turned-Assistant-Dormitory-Director-slash-amateur-sleuth Heather Wells of Size 12 Is Not Fat; the Winona Ryder obsessed gossip columnist Melissa Fuller of The Boy Next Door; Em Watts/Nikki Howard, geek-turned-supermodel, of Airhead; or even the glitter loving fourth grader Allie Finkle of Allie Finkle’s Rules for Girls), but indulging in the work of Meg Cabot is, and forever will be, synonymous with reading a note from your best friend – one smuggled from hand to hand under the shelter of a wooden school desk scarred with carvings depicting the names of prior students and fellow classmates alike; each minute message full of mysteries meant for your eyes only. And what do we do with best friends, my loves? Ask them for advice on style, of course! Meg herself has been kind enough to share her number one secret with us! What is your number one style secret and why? MC: Wear what makes you feel good, not what other people say is the latest trend. A lot of times what's "in" isn't necessarily right for YOU (Louboutins? The girls on Sex and the City might love them but I've never found a pair I can walk in comfortably. And what's the deal with khakis? I've yet to put on a pair that don't make my butt look gigantic). Just find what feels good (while still making you look good, of course), even if it means not going with the hottest designer. Who knows? Maybe you'll be the next trendsetter! You know those fringe boots that so many have cast to the wayside, lovers? I believe that I'll be playing trendsetter by donning them with denim cutoffs - a throwback to the bohemian styles I adore so much. How will you show your trendsetter colors today, kittens? Fashionably yours! Thanks to The Unquiet Library for the picture. 20. For me, it's black leather ankle boots, fall & winter. I wear them with everything, jeans, dressed up, with long skirts, you name it. So I'll make that one of my trendsetter colors :)

  22. The princess diaries have to be my favs of her. I have to admit I like them better than some of her adult fiction which was definitely, not where I thought it would be going. But we are eating her up..even with Graphic Novels. Very cool post.

  23. cool words her words are inspired

  24. I love Meg Cabot and her answer was so Meg Cabot-ish. Love her! xo

  25. Great post! I couldn't agree more with her style advice... so many people fall into the trap of buying stuff that looks good on others without fully realizing what suits them.

And I think your fringed boots idea is great! I'm not fond of the current season Isabel Marant ones but I've seen some great alternatives.

  31. Lovely post! I haven't read any of her books but her style stays true to her and that's what's truely important!

Today I'm finally wearing pastels! (No surprise!). Light pink cardigan, light grey denim and a gold sequined tank that I've had for at least 2 years and have never worn and black platform pumps... Too cold for sandals!

  37. Oh how fantastic you were able to get in touch with such a talented writer!! I have heard of her books but I have yet to read them.... must go to Barnes and Noble pronto

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hmm. create your own style. Sounds like something I've done. I don't follow trends, but rather stick with basics and throw in some fun here and there. Besides, at 45 ... trends can look a little silly ... although I guess it depends onw hat trends you're following. You gotta be comfortable in your own skin and with your own style. That will give you confidence and draw people to you. How great is that!

And her style secret is perfection.

  41. Oh she is sassy, isn't she? :) I'm thinking vintage with flip flops? The heat is making dressing up just a tad annoying in my part of the world :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. I love this series and what sound advice! I've never been one to embrace khaki pants either.. or pants at all for that matter :) And I'm totally gonna go out and buy all her books now, I LOVED the princess diaries!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I totally agree with her about its what YOU feel comfy in. Great post as always my dear <3

  44. hi erika

    how are you
    i like her,
    i never read her books,
    i will read now

    ReplyDelete
  45. This post reminds me that I should read something fun again instead of the novel I'm struggling through right now . . .

And while Louboutins may be WAY TOO PRICEY, I still maintain that they're the most freakin' gorgeous shoes I've ever seen! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  46. never read any of her books actually! but totally agree, no point wearing something that you are uncomfortable in just because its trendy.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hi Erika,
Great post, agree with you on being a 'slave' to others ideas, set your own trend and make other follow you.

Thanks for leaving a thought on my last post, hope your day is going to be great.

    Colin.

  51. It's hard to say dnt follow trends, if it fits u i think its not bad if u do. All u have to do is add ur personal touch to the trends.

    ReplyDelete
  52. haha she great!! I was more of the My so Called Life vein ( I was so upset when the show was coancelled) :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. Meg's books are so fun and her style secret is important for everyone to remember when dressing themselves. No point being completely on trend if you look horrific or feel compeltely uncomfortable!

    ReplyDelete
  54. She is soo on point! I have to say I'm not a big "heels" girl for that reason. If I don't feel comfortable in them, then I can't exude confidence. And killer confidence is such an important part of having great personal style!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I love reading Meg's books! Especially in the summertime :o)

  56. great interview!! and no wonder you're a great writer - you read so much when you were younger! i was and still am a bookworm too. ;)

  57. I loved her answer! It's so true and definitely something that a lot of people need to remember.

  59. I like Meg Cabot, and Princess Diaries of course. It's so easy to relate to her!

  60. OMG I adore Meg Cabot and The Princess Diaries books. I have read and reread them - I was obsessed with Mia ages 13-15. I blame Mag Cabot for my overuse of "like", "totally", and "way" in my writing sometimes, just because I still think her style is hilarious.

    loved this post! <3
