Cafe Fashionista Book Club: Bunheads by Sophie Flack

Welcome to book selection three of the Café Fashionista Book Club! Since we began in January, we have read Jennifer E. Smith’s The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight and Meg Cabot’s Abandon. This month, in honor of the release of OPI’s collaboration with the New York City Ballet (and my undying obsession with ballerinas), I thought it would be a fabulous time to read Sophie Flack’s Bunheads.

Once a dancer with the New York City Ballet, Sophie Flack is now officially a YA author, and Bunheads is her debut novel.

As always, the rules remain the same…Throughout the month, you can come back to this original posting, and Discuss the current book club selection in the Comments section, sharing your thoughts on a character you love (or love to hate), memorable quotes or scenes in the book, and the like. Everything is very informal; but I think that it will be a blast, and I hope that you will all join in! Remember you do not have to participate each month - only when you have the time or feel compelled to.

♥Book Synopsis: On-stage beauty. Backstage drama.

As a dancer with the ultra-prestigious Manhattan Ballet Company, nineteen-year-old Hannah Ward juggles intense rehearsals, dazzling performances and complicated backstage relationships. Up until now, Hannah has happily devoted her entire life to ballet.

But when she meets a handsome musician named Jacob, Hannah's universe begins to change, and she must decide if she wants to compete against the other "bunheads" in the company for a star soloist spot or strike out on her own in the real world. Does she dare give up the gilded confines of the ballet for the freedoms of everyday life?

    I was enamored with this book from the moment I finished page one, so I am thrilled to begin the discussion. Let's get the ball rolling!

    The unique dynamic displayed between the main character (Hannah) and the girls she shares a dressing room with (Zoe, Leni, Bea, and Daisy) is intriguing all itself.

    Though these five girls are so incredibly close, and loving and supportive of one another, beneath the surface there is a hint of cutthroat competitiveness, jealousy, and hate, that is understandable, given the situation they are in. Their interactions are scathing, yet laced with sweetness, and truly give new meaning to the term `frenemy'.

    I really loved this book and Hannah's point of view. I also like that Jacob was the kind of faithful that Hannah needed. I wish I knew what happened with Bea and I was really happy with the ending.

    @Natasha Hollerup Honestly, I think all of the girls are worthy of their own spin-off books. I would love to have the chance to learn as much about all of them, as we learned about Hannah. :)
