Style Secrets: Symbol of Style

“Create your own visual style…let it be unique for yourself and yet identifiable for others.”
Orson Welles

Darlings, I’m not one for beating around the bush so lets guilelessly get down to business here. Admit it, there is nothing more simple than spotting a style that mesmerizes you and immediately copying it. Perhaps you adore Blair Waldorf’s wide array of sensational oversized headbands; or maybe you can’t get enough of Bettie Page’s bangs, or Olivia Palermo’s constant incorporation of statement necklaces into her daily look. As we all know, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” but it can also work against us in making us lose all semblance of personal style.

Don’t get me wrong my loves; there is absolutely no harm in drawing inspiration from our style icons in terms of the way we dress, but establishing our own distinct form of personal style seems far more fabulous. After all, you are not the only one imitating Serena van der Woodsen’s tousled tresses or Dree Hemingway’s slightly rebellious tomboy chic; there are millions of you out there, making it quite easy to find yourself lost in the crowd. Allowing your personal style to wind up on a missing person’s poster hanging haphazardly upon the sliding glass doors of a supermarket is an absolute no-no; therefore, the time has come to personalize your look.

Incorporating a symbol that is all yours into your wardrobe is the easiest way to stand out from the followers; to shout to the world that you are a true individual, without so much as opening your Peek-A-Boo glossed pout; to create an emblem that instantly makes people think of you, and only you. Who knows; by this time next week someone could, very likely, be mimicking your newly-developed trademark style!

Skin Deep There is no question that creating a signature style can be quite the intimidating task – especially in the beginning stages. One very rarely knows where to start, and needs time to evaluate what they want their look to say about them. While you’re hemming and hawing over this particular predicament, weighing the options of effusing sophistication or playfulness, ruggedness or romantics in your daily look du jour, turning to beauty is oftentimes the most accessible way to begin your foray into finding your symbol of style.

Beauty is synonymous with the presence of a lifelong best friend. It is always there to boost your confidence or cheer you up after a bad day with the simple application of a bit of Just Pinched Instant Blush Tint adorning the apples of your cheeks or a mere swipe of Make It Big Lash Plumping Mascara about your lashes to make your eyes truly pop. When it comes to perusing a beauty ritual as your trademark, however, it is essential that you keep the mantra “Go big or go home” in mind.

“An image is not simply a trademark, a design, a slogan or an easily remembered picture. It is a studiously crafted personality profile of an individual, institution, corporation, product or service.”
Daniel J. Boorstin

A trademark built around beauty must be over the top, ostentatious, and, if you’re truly bold, slightly outlandish. Sticking to neutral tones or subtle shades is easily forgettable; your dazzling logo must be anything but! You want something that people will remember; an image which will stay emblazoned in the minds of everyone – from old acquaintances to new friends and foes alike. Hence the reason why dramatics are in order!

Use beauty looks from eras past as your muse. Think pixie hairstyles like Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby or Edie Sedgwick in Poor Little Rich Girl; embrace dramatic eye makeup like spider-lashes and heavy kohl liner of the sixties; mix and match bright colors to create depth and smoldering seduction; or have a little fun with hair color to reinvent yourself. One thing to remember is not to get caught up in wanting to shock people with your beauty regimen. The key to being satisfied with your signature is being comfortable. If your personality is lost beneath layers of bright shadows, and pounds of hairspray that scream someone else you’ll be disappointed in the results. Adhere to your personal likes and dislikes to put your best beauty tricks forward and truly tantalize with your trademark!

Taste the Rainbow Dolls, even if you are amongst the class of people who feel a desire to dabble in a variety of styles, changing your look on a daily basis in a fashion akin to a chameleon switching his shade to blend in with his surroundings, do not fret…you are still able to create a trademark that represents who you are; you merely have to build it around something other than a fervor for frilly skirts or cravings for cute crop tops. It is times like these when we must willingly regress back to childhood, and ask ourselves the age old question… “What’s your favorite color?”

“It’s beauty that captures your attention; personality which captures your heart.”
Roy R. Gilson

It’s completely true; one of the simplest forms of satisfying your desire for a signature style is by tasting the rainbow and selecting one shade that embodies everything about who you are. In grade school we bickered with one another over what color was the absolute best, the crème de la crème of Crayola offerings that worked wonders in any piece of art we put down on paper (I was partial to Sea Foam Green myself); now, in young adulthood, we must do precisely the same thing, only instead of being used to decorate a doodle drawn in the margins of our Lisa Frank notebook during history class, we are adorning our bodies in such a hue!

When selecting a color as your trademark you must be able to distinguish between what you love, and what you look good in. Refrain from choosing green, even if you adore it, if it makes your pallor look pasty; at the same time, do not pick yellow simply because it looks good on you. Look for a color that flatters your figure, and makes you happy all at once. Bottom line…you cannot have one without the other; therefore, search until you find perfection. And once you have chosen your signature shade? Oh please, that’s easy darlings; never walk out the door without at least a smidgen of that color accoutering your body – it is your trademark, after all!

The Power of the Accessory If you have resisted the lure of the accessory for this long I truly commend you; ‘tis not an easy task. Accessories are to fashion what miniature marshmallows and whipped cream are to hot chocolate…a complete and utter necessity. They have the ability to instantly add personality, volume, and dimension to your style; essentially breathing life into your look du jour. For this reason alone, they are one of the most powerful staples for creating a trademark all your own.

“Style is an expression of individualism mixed with charisma. Fashion is something that comes after style.”
John Fairchild

It was Coco Chanel who said “It is the unseen, unforgettable, ultimate accessory of fashion that heralds your arrival and prolongs your departure.” Truer words have never been spoken. Choosing an accessory as the piece de resistance of your personal style is a fabulous, fashion-forward way to celebrate individuality, as they are widely available in a multitude of shapes, sizes, colors, and textures; and, the true icing on the cake, are oftentimes quite inexpensive so you can indulge in a few pieces to keep your look fresh and fun, never boring or mundane!

Seek out an accessory that is completely comfortable, and can be worn year-round; but don’t lose sight of the fact that, as a trademark, it must be clearly visible to people. Wearing barely there stud earrings on a daily basis easily create a hint of sparkle, but completely lack the ability to make a big enough impression on someone where they would instantly attribute earrings to you as an individual. Be more audacious and cheeky in your selection. If you want rings to be your signature, forgo thin bands and instead embrace cocktail rings that are large and in charge like House of Harlow 1960’s Peacock Cocktail Ring or Noir Jewelry’s Disco Deco Cocktail Ring. If scarves are more your style, choose ones with memorable aesthetics like Eugenia Kim’s Angela Chunky Braided Scarf, or pretty designs like Deepa Gurnani’s Rainbow Scarf. Remember darlings, it is your responsibility to choose an accessory that will keep people talking long after you’ve vacated the room!

“A great trademark is appropriate, dynamic, distinctive, memorable and unique.”
Primo Angeli

Fancy Feet Never underestimate the power of the shoe. Many believe that, given the fact that they are strapped upon your feet, the lowest possible region of your body, fabulous shoes go unnoticed. Darlings, this estimation could not be further from the truth. Take it from someone who surveys a person’s ensemble from the bottom up; shoes are of the utmost importance, and, as sad as it may sound, are oftentimes more memorable than one’s face. Hence the reason why they are a wondrous form of fashion to curl up with when creating your claim to style fame!

An important thing to remember when electing to make a form of shoe your signature style is the itty bitty fact that you must choose something that retains the versatility to operate in any given situation you encounter – be it a first date, job interview, or cocktail party; whilst being available in a multitude of designs and aesthetics so that you can stay true to your desired logo at all times without tiring of it.

“Fashions fade, style is eternal.”
Yves Saint Laurent

Boots, as much as I adore them, may work with leggings, jeans, dresses, and skirts, but they honestly don’t make the cut in terms of establishing themselves as a trademark, for cocktail parties and evening affairs are remiss about welcoming them with open arms (though, truth be told, I have attempted to wiggle my way around this unwritten rule countless times – all to disastrous results, mind you). No, when seeking signature style of the shoe, it is best to look towards ballerinas like Antik Batik’s Kiwi Cotton Ballet Flats with Beads or Pour La Victoire’s Juliet Stud Flats, and pumps such as Luxury Rebel’s Jenny Haircalf Booties or Pelle Moda’s Wren Peep Toe Pumps on Double Platform. These two styles proffer the ability to don a different color, texture, or aesthetic 365 days a year; and are the ideal item to build entire ensembles around!

Adored Accoutrements Kittens, who on earth led you to believe that you had to select a hue or particular add-on to represent you as your very own trademark? A signature is what you make it; thus it is your decision what form it takes on and how you translate it to the world. And one of the very best ways of communicating your personal style, if you hadn’t already guessed, is by embracing a type of clothing that you would be incapable of living without!

Like shoes, selecting a style of dress that screams “your name here,” is one of the most multifaceted ways to clinch your autobiographical attire. Infatuated with dresses? Make flirty frocks such as Tibi’s Long Sleeve Dress your moniker. Incapable of resisting tights? Allocate pretty legwear like SPANX’s Swiss Dot Tights as your style namesake. Constantly tempted by tunics? Don’t be frightened to wear one like Kite and Butterfly’s Ruffle Caftan everyday! A trademark is specific to you and you only; therefore, selecting a well-loved piece to represent your charming character is a foolproof way of establishing pure bliss.

“Style is a magic wand, and turns everything to gold that it touches.”
Logan Pearsall Smith

Tricks of the Trade Now, I am most certainly not one for being a downer or ruining anyone’s fun – especially when it comes to fashion; but I feel that it is my duty as the style-loving femme fatale that I consider myself to be to arm you with a few tips to ensure that your quest for sensational signature style comes off without a hitch!

24/7 Style It is your trademark, your signature, the thing that makes you recognizable to others; therefore you must ensure that you display your stylish symbol as often as possible!
Just Say No to Trends! Trends are fleeting; here today gone tomorrow. Avoid designating one as your trademark as, chances are, you will tire of it the moment the fashion world casts it aside.
Seasons of Change Be mindful of the fact that your moniker must be flexible; it must retain the ability to work in any and all types of weather. As such, select something that will survive and satisfy your wardrobe winter, spring, summer, or fall.
Metamorphosis Just as trends are fleeting, so are our likes and dislikes of the moment; thus, do not be afraid to modify your trademark, even once it has been established. Style is synonymous with a butterfly emerging from her cocoon, allow it to metamorphosize and flourish as you see fit.
Interlocking C’s At times the interlocking C’s are representative of Coco Chanel; currently, they represent two very important ideas when establishing signature style…confidence and comfort. If both of these prerequisites are not met, find a different look to allocate as your trademark. It is your responsibility as the temptress that you are to effuse fabulousness at all times; a task which is downright impossible if you don’t feel confident or comfortable in your style of dress!

“Style is the hallmark of a temperament stamped upon the material at hand.”

Style Secrets: Tall Drink of Water

“Being tall is an advantage, especially in business. People will always remember you. And if you’re in a crowd, you’ll always have some clean air to breathe.”
Julia Child

Dolls I am convinced that the taller mademoiselle’s teetering about this good green earth in L.A.M.B.’s Valisa Lace Up Pumps on Hidden Platform have been bestowed with an unfair rap. We shorter girls have misconstrued their covetable height as a blessing; a characteristic which makes them more enticing to cute boys given their mile-long legs, and seductive strut. The plain and simple truth, however, is that, while we petite pretties are gazing up in adoration at our taller counterparts, those very same individuals are often in complete envy of our tiny statures.

But I digress; it is a known fact that, in any given situation, the grass is often greener on the other side. Even so, as the fashion-forward femme fatales we are, it is our duty to embrace our height – no matter how many inches or lack thereof are present – and stun with our style; taunt with our tempting good looks; and wow with our wardrobes. Yet we must do so in a way that is proper for our given elevation point. While limitations enshroud the closets of the petite, such restrictions are rarely encountered by the lofty ladies amongst us.

When it comes to height and the world of fashion, anything goes! Tall allows you to don almost any piece of frippery that catches your eye; the key is to be aware of your body shape, embrace the length of your form, and do everything in your power to accentuate your sensational stature. A task, kitty cats, which is far easier to accomplish than it actually sounds!

Solid Sophisticate Whether you’re on the brink of breaking through that pesky half-inch line marked upon a ruler from your elementary school days to prove to the world that you are, in fact, a proud member of the “five feet and over crowd,” or you’re simply a willowy vision eager to highlight your desirable sylphlike silhouette, there is no more powerful way to bring attention to your long, lean, lithesome frame than by perusing solid colors, and creating ensembles which stick to a monochromatic palette.

Solid colors retain the ability to create the illusion that one is more svelte than they truly are; they provide a false appearance of added length which serves to make one’s form more fluid and flowing – a trick of the eye which works to make the tall girl look even more runway ready than patterns or bold prints would. Such a streamlining of style makes you effuse confidence and aplomb in any situation; whilst subtly bragging to the world that you couldn’t be more proud of your prominent height.

“It was only when I moved to New York that I realized tall is good.”
Kristen Johnston

To the Max The maxi dress, like over the knee boots, is one of those fundamentals in life that can be downright intimidating in the beginning stages. There is something quite domineering and frightening about the extreme length which it proffers so eloquently that leads one to take a step back and mull over the winsomeness and capabilities of such a style. Do me a favor, darlings and halt contemplation of all kinds; as a skyscraping siren, owning a maxi dress is not an option for you, it is an absolute matter of necessity.

There is no more dazzling way to spotlight one’s height than via a sweeping, floor-length frock that pools around your feet in a fashion which makes your presence and appearance seem everlasting; quite a bit like the immortal Grecian goddesses you will be mistaken for when donning such a look. While shorter girls must search high and low for form-fitting maxis, as someone harboring unstoppable tallness, you do not have to worry about being swallowed whole by such a design; therefore seek out cuts that ebb and flow with the movements of your body like A.L.C.’s Strapless Maxi Dress with Belt or Karina Grimaldi’s Antonella Maxi Dress. Such a skimming construction partnered with your height works to ensconce you in effortless elegance which makes you come off as ethereal, enchanting, and empyreal – almost like a glamorous mythical being. Weave your hair into an Alexander Wang side braid, slip a pair of Elizabeth and James’ Blair Jewel Thong Sandals upon your feet, slide a bulbous vintage cocktail ring like mark’s For Keeps Ring upon your finger, and clasp tuleste market’s Half Circle Chain Necklace around your throat to complete the look. From here on out, we’ll just call you Aphrodite.

Waisting Away Regardless of what anyone may or may not tell you, a high waist will forever be in style. There is truly no more classy and sophisticated way to make yourself look slimmer and taller than with the assistance of a pair of high waisted anything accoutering your lower half – be it Alice + Olivia’s Pinstripe Pleated Shorts with High Waist or So Low’s High Waist Leggings.

“Love thy neighbor – and if he happens to be tall, debonair and devastating, it will be that much easier.”
Mae West

A high waist is the universal way for all women to add inches to their stature. Given the fact that you are already a tall drink of water, of course, this may sound completely unappealing; but such a look truly has its benefits – even for a lady of length, like yourself. Tagging inches onto your already boisterous height via a high waistline elongates your figure in its entirety making one appear more genteel and opulent; whilst slimming the body all at once – an array of elements which serve to make you more effectual in your appearance, and contribute a splash of authoritative audaciousness to your entire demeanor.

Long and Luxurious Darlings you are towering, you are tantalizing, and as a proud member of the statuesque and sassy club, I cannot stress enough that you, as the gorgeous glamazons that you are, should use your grace, poise, and chic caliber in the height department to enhance your true beauty; one of the best ways to do so is with the assistance of long, luxurious tops gracing your upper half.

We pint-sized firecrackers often find ourselves the victim of looking short, stumpy, and stocky when styled in sweaters, t-shirts, cardigans, tunics, or typical t-shirts that fall anywhere below the hip; but you have the height for such a design. You possess the tallness required to do justice to these particular pieces; therefore, embrace them!

“Censorship is the height of vanity.”
Martha Graham

Pieces like Splendid’s Distressed Fleece V Neck Tunic, mark’s Cold Shoulder Top, and Rachel Pally’s Oversized Swing Tank harbor the ability to lengthen your torso and shorten your legs ever so slightly; a look that would be fairly unflattering on someone shorter, but which only serves to make you more glamorous. Do keep in mind that long tops have the potential to stunt the growth even of the tallest temptress; so use them wisely. But please, do use them – you will not be sorry my loves!

Mod Squad A constant worry for tall girls, I kid you not, is that of showing too much skin. One wants to be ravishing, regal, and resplendent in their look du jour, not risqué; yet for those with legs that go on for miles, sticking to this tabulation can be quite a challenge. The Diane von Furstenberg Kawa Sequin Skirt that fell to the knees of your petite flaxen-haired pal hovers just below the derriere when worn by you; the Young Fabulous & Broke Caroline Skirt that ruffled romantically about the thighs of your little sis hardly graces your upper legs. Let’s face it, there’s nothing you can do about these things; yet given the fact that “You never get a second chance to make a first impression,” you want to ensure that you are putting your best frock forward!

“You can’t reason yourself into happiness any more than you can reason yourself into an extra six inches in height.”
Stephen Fry

Dolls don’t you dare lock those mini dresses or bandage skirts away! Yes, you are tall, but that is no reason to stifle your style and steer clear of particular designs simply to please others; the secret is to guilelessly be mindful of the length of your more flirty, feminine bottom half bliss. Skirts and dresses will undoubtedly look shorter on you than they will on someone not as blessed in the height department; therefore, retain modesty in your wardrobe by using your fingertips as a guide for length, or merely incorporate longer looks, like pencil skirts, into your everyday style. They may effuse professionalism, but with the right accessories, their playful side comes out making them even more cheeky than their shorter sidekicks!

Ruler of the Empire The way I see it loves, the fashion world is like a fairy godmother of sorts; whereas the empire waist acts in the place of the magic wand, casting a bit of alluring enchantment upon anyone with the good sense to accouter themselves in such a design.

“To achieve harmony in bad taste is the height of elegance.”
Jean Genet

While empire waist dresses and tops retain the ability to be universally flattering on women of all shapes and sizes; when worn by the taller ladies there is a tad more elegance proffered which is imposing and monarchical, making the wearer radiate the same sort of stately presence as that synonymous with the members of the British Royal Family. Empire waists, like that seen upon Juicy Couture’s Shirred Empire Paisley Dress or Wilt’s Empire Tunic, bring a hoity-toity hint of haute couture to the high-reaching beauty’s wardrobe, making one appear more willowy and elongated than a fitted piece would allow; whilst permitting the pretty in question to retain complete comfort from day to night!

Flat Foot Don’t worry darlings, no one will hold it against you, or consider you a traitor in any way, shape, or form for wanting to forgo the extra boost of height created by the addition of heels in place of fancy flats that will keep you closer to the ground. Girls short in stature may feel the desire to peruse heels whenever given the chance; but as someone brimming with tallness, flats are the most fabulous way to downplay your height, without forsaking sassy style!

I know better than many that heels oftentimes make one feel more grown-up in their style; but flats have the ability to be just as sophisticated, feminine, and polished as a pump, as long as one knows well enough to search for perfection. Many times typical ballerinas grow boring in their aesthetic, and begin to lose their identity, making the wearer feel as if they have fallen into a footwear rut, and leading them to pursue something a little more fabulous, which often arises in the form of a stiletto. The key to sublimity is to think outside the box. Seek out pieces with personality that veers away from the ordinary silhouette of the ballerina. Show your spirit fingers with Steven’s Jezebel Jazz Shoes; wrap your mind, and wardrobe, around the model of menswear via Elizabeth and James’ Wicked Suede Oxford Flats; pay tribute to retro architecture’s like that seen on Alexander Wang’s Ines Suede Oxfords. Adorning your tootsies in savvy, slightly offbeat styles is the number one way to feel both mature and magnificent!

“Happiness makes up in height what it lacks in length.”
Robert Frost

Of course, should you feel plagued with the desire to pump it up, do not at all allow your height to stand in the way. Wear your Tory Burch Julianne Open Toe Logo Wedges with wild abandonment; don your Dolce Vita Trinity Leopard Platform Pumps to make your silhouette more daring; and flaunt your Paul & Joe Sister Perine Zip Front Pumps with your finest frippery. Just make sure to pop a pair of CitySlips in your purse should you encounter a wardrobe malfunction of the footwear variety, or simply want to soothe your pained, yet perkily pedicured paws after trotting around town styled in stilettos!

Maximum Measures Capris are cute and pants that hit right at the ankle can be ambrosial, yet both lack the ability to do anything spectacular for one’s body – even the flowing form of the tall girl. Lengths that fall within the “in-between” category, hovering in the midst of long and short styles, quite often ruin the look that one is going for, and stumps one’s silhouette; making you appear shorter than you actually are. Whether you’re ten feet or two feet tall, one looks their absolute best when going to the maximum in either direction of measurement. Slip on a pair of tailored shorts like Forever 21’s Nautical Twill Short, which give you the ability to serve up a splash of sophistication at the very same time that you are baring your legs in the most flattering and blissful of ways; or style your bottom half in Grid Woven Trousers which flit flirtily around your feet in the most cosmopolitan of fashions. The ideal way for one to show off their glorious gams is to fully embrace the sentiment that going to the max will forever keep you looking like a superstar!

“The height of cleverness is being able to conceal it.”
Francois de la Rochefoucauld

Looks for the Leggy Lady Darlings, I truly hope that you’re not overwhelmed at the thought of trying to accentuate your covetable height; but just in case you’re feeling slightly numb by everything that you have learned, here are a few complete ensembles created with you and only you in mind to get you started!

A plain white tee tucked into Alice + Olivia’s Pinstripe Pleated Shorts with High Waist, paired with Boutique 9’s Ronnie Jazz Oxford Flats, and topped off with House of Harlow 1960’s Chain & Leather Corset Necklace.
Plush Faux Leather Liquid Leggings topped with Mike & Chris’ Hunter Tunic in Heather Red, and worn with Jeffrey Campbell’s Lubbock Suede Over the Knee Boots in Black.
Juicy Couture’s Shirred Empire Paisley Dress coupled with Frye’s Rider Pull On Boots, and tuleste market’s Croc Bangle Set.

Style Secrets: Cowboy Boots Made Classy

“A lie can be halfway round the world before the truth has got its boots on.”
James Callaghan

Though I truly cannot stand the term “stigma,” I am the first to admit that such a word comes attached to the mere thought of the cowboy boot. While such a design has made its way back into the welcome arms of fashion lovers and loathers alike, there is a very large gray area in which many are completely baffled in how to go about styling such a fragment of foot accoutrement; a confusion which keeps many at arms length, avoiding such a look at all costs.

The time has come to put your brave disguise on, kitty cats; to smirk in the face of befuddlement and embrace the wide unknown apperceived as cowboy boots! There is no rule etched into stone stating that one must be a skilled equestrian to don such an aesthetic; no regulations scripted upon weathered scrolls of parchment paper dictating that the wearer should be well-versed in miscellaneous music facts about country artists; no regime ordering that such a style should only be seen in the ring of a rodeo. The plain and simple truth is that cowboy boots can be just as gritty or glamorous as the wearer deems worthy.

Cowboy boots are like the redheaded stepchild of the fashion world. At times they are ostracized, others they are embraced; yet still they never receive the credit they deserve for having the ability to contribute a chic touch of rustic cosmopolitanism to one’s look du jour. That all changes now; for, my darlings, cowboy boots are about to get classy!

The Boots Cowboy boot aesthetics have changed quite a bit over the years. The typical seam-detailing, slightly chunky heels, harness embellishments, and pull tabs flanking either side of the top of the shaft, like that seen on Frye’s Melissa Button Boots, have given way to more urbane, sophisticated styling which proffers countrified influences inspired by Southwestern culture; a juxtaposition between two worlds that contributes a vintage elegance to one’s way of dress.

Color is an important aspect to take into consideration when selecting the perfect pair of cowboy boots for your ever-burgeoning shoe collection. Blacks are a stunning choice when it comes to more cultivated cuts that are crafted out of suede; however, given the fact that cowboy boots are most often constructed out of leather, I find that cognac shades are far more versatile to one’s wardrobe.

“My optimism wears heavy boots and is loud.”
Henry Rollins

There is something very prestigious and posh about cognac hues. The subtle mingling of rich auburns and soft browns, with the slightest touch of amber, effortlessly creates an almost instantaneous aristocratic aura; whilst holding fast to the ever so feeble earthiness that cowboy boots bring to the forefront. Pieces with minimal detailing, a shaft which hits just below the knee, round toes, and a stacked heel with the ability to give you height without turning into a full-fledged stiletto, like Frye’s Jane Stitch in Redwood, are your best bet. Offerings like this toe the line between playful and polished, and are an absolute cinch to style!

Short Stuff It may sound a bit strange, but one of the most stunning ways to display your charming cowboy boots is by pairing them with bare legs and a saucy pair of short shorts. Now, we are not talking about cutoff denim showcasing tattered hemlines, mind you. The type of shorts on the tip of my tongue, and the future BFF of your bewitching boots, are those of the tailored fashion.

Tailored shorts are an atypical way of allowing your cowboy boots to steal the spotlight, as they provide a pretty pairing that is dignified yet delicate; whilst giving you the chance to show off your sophisticated savoir-faire with smart grandeur! Look for cuts that are short enough to boast your beauteous gams without crossing the line of being too risqué – you wouldn’t want anyone attempting to prohibit you from leaving the house while donning them! Styles which feature cuffed hemlines, slanted hip pockets, and token pleats along the front, like Diane von Furstenberg’s Ramier Shorts, are ideal. Designs like this allow the wearer to give off an uptown, blasé vibe tinged with a touch of cheekiness; the perfect balance for a true streetwise lady!

“Always wear expensive shoes. People notice.”
Brian Koslow

Skinny Minnie When not coupled with barely there tailored shorts, the absolute next best way to pay tribute to a tantalizing team of cowboy boots is to tuck a pair of super skinny jeans into their shaft for a look that is completely comfy, cozy, and outrageously chic. The main thing to keep in mind when it comes to incorporating denim into your daily look, however, is occasion.

Denim, as much as we despise to admit it, will forever be labeled as an “off-duty” sort of style. It is regarded as being laidback, lazy, and unprofessional; therefore, to make it more acceptable in the working world, and to ensure that you forever look dressy, it is best to forgo light washes, and instead splurge on dark denims which bridge the gap between midnight blue and black colors.

In general, dark-rinse denim, like Citizens of Humanity’s Avedon Slick Skinny Legging Jeans in Poseidon or Phantom Ankle Skinny Jeans in Typhoon, is far dressier than pale blue shades; yet provides an identical comfort factor to its more carefree-colored counterpart. It also takes away thoughts of invisible extra pounds speckling your body courtesy of the opaque coloring; while, at the very same time, creating a gorgeous backdrop to your boots - making them even more showstopping than you could have ever imagined!

“The fact is, sometimes it’s hard to walk in a single woman’s shoes. That’s why we need really special ones now and then to make the walk a little more fun.”
Jenny Bicks

Billowy Bliss Darlings whether you’ve taken it upon yourself to accouter your lower half in tailored shorts or skintight denim, the key to keeping yourself looking and feeling sassy, saucy, and spunky in your style is by embracing the concept of balance. Barely there, painted on, either aesthetic your bottoms happen to be modeled after will benefit immensely by being matched with a blouse that billows and floats around your form in an airy, ethereal fashion.

Your boots are, most likely, a part of the cognac/tan family; hence the reason why it is best to stick to a neutral palette for the upper part of your body. Blouses that stay true to pale gray, white, cream, and nude shades are dainty in their design, and present a nice contrast to the ruddy golden hue that virtually emanates from your stunning shoes. Look for feminine detailing such as the ruffled trim found upon Ella Moss' Estee Top; free-spirited embroidery like the scalloped and eyelet hem on Joie’s Steffie B Embroidered Top; and necklines which allow for a petite peek of décolletage like Beyond Vintage’s Deep V Chiffon Tee. Such architecture serves to make your silhouette ever so slightly swankier, and enhance your entire ensemble with a carefree flick of the wrist.

“A pair of shoes can change your life. Just ask Cinderella.”
Unknown

Gold Digger To stay in tune with the “southwest” ambiance created by your boots, it is easy to instantly think of silver or turquoise jewelry as the go to hues for your accessories; I say be bold! Think outside of the box and spruce up your style with the addition of glittering gold baubles to offset the ruggedness of your fancy footwear.

Gorjana is my absolute favorite company in terms of jewelry at the moment courtesy of the minimalism of their designs. The Double Feather Necklace conjures up thoughts of a whimsical Indian Summer; the simplicity of the leather wrap found upon the Graham Three Charm Bracelet works hand in hand with the beatnik beauty of your boots; and the Selene Ring contributes a touch of curiosity to your dazzling decorations thanks to the textured dot embellishments covering its surface. The honest truth? Dolls, a few well-placed pretties glittering in all of their golden glory is all you truly need to further hypnotize your many admirers!

“I still have my feet on the ground, I just wear better shoes.”
Oprah Winfrey

Style Secrets: Stormy Sophistication

“Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a lullaby.”
Langston Hughes

My loves, I understand your desire to barricade the front door, slither beneath your bed for optimal cover, or lock yourself within the confines of your bathroom to protect yourself from the downpour performing a virtual tap dance upon your roof and against the crystal clear windowpanes which once allowed smiling beams of sunlight to shine through with their warmth, but now display a gray, murky world full of unpleasantness. Do yourself an immediate favor and abolish such thoughts from your beautiful brain!

Take it from an individual who has suffered through the embarrassment of hideous rain coats glaring in all of their bright-colored glory; of frizzy hair sticking up in every which way, a jumble of haphazard disarray with the power to make random passersby cringe in horror; of beloved Burberry umbrellas turned inside out and rendered worthless courtesy of unexpected gusts of wicked 30 MPH winds – no matter how much you loathe the inconsiderateness and mere presence of stormy weather, it cannot be avoided.

As much as our poof-prone hair would love for us to be able to, one cannot wait out the wayward weather swaddled in piles of blankets accompanied by Serendipity on repeat and a pint of Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie in hand. Rain or shine we, as the upstanding citizens we are, must face the harsh cruelties of the world regardless of the current climate; and face the world we shall – with true stormy sophistication, to be sure!

Sweet Feet I myself have never before met a puddle I didn’t like, there’s something purely innocent and whimsical about seeing a shallow pool of water and plunging straight into it; but even if you are not a card-carrying member of the puddle-jumping family, it is essential to have at least one pair of rain boots in your possession, on hand at a moment’s notice should the need for such foot accoutrement arise.

Though time and time again we try to deny it, the truth of the matter is that our beloved shoe collection truly takes the greatest beating during the drizzly days of the year. Suede’s turn soggy; knits become waterlogged; and leathers oftentimes lose their luster. For this reason alone, it is best to embrace a style crafted out of rubber, like Hunter Boots. Rubber rain boots are the most functional form of footwear when the weather turns blustery; yet, depending on the style you select, they retain a sassy savoir faire about their aesthetic which keeps you looking every bit the chic sophisticate.

“The best thing one can do when it’s raining is to let it rain.”
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Search for knee-high designs that are both playful and professional in their coloring and ornamentation. A pair of Original Hunter Wellington Rain Boots in fire engine red or aubergine have the potential to add a fun splash of color to your look; reptilian embossing, like that found on Pour La Victoire’s Rus Croc Rain Boots create elegance; and an equestrian/motorcycle inspired construction like KORS Michael Kors’ Stormy Rubber Engineer Boots possess the ability to contribute a dash of posh to your silhouette. The key to perfection in terms of rain boots is finding a pair that ensures both comfort and confidence in the wearer. Donning wellies may make one feel like a child; but that certainly does not mean you must look like one!

Below the Belt Given the fact that cold, wet, rainy, windy days are downright unpredictable, they are often the ideal time to tuck your tights, leggings, skirts, and dresses into the farthest corner of your dresser drawer, and accouter yourself in them on a more pleasant day. As a stylish girl about town, you absolutely do not want to spend the afternoon trying to keep a flirty frock from billowing out around your body a la Marilyn Monroe in The Seven Year Itch; therefore, it is best to style yourself in denim that will keep your lower half feeling snuggly, yet looking sassy!

Now I know what you’re thinking, denim is not appropriate attire for the office. That is an incorrect summation, if I do say so myself! Whether you are a hardworking member of the corporate world, or simply a style-savvy student, denim has its moments for any and all situations – rainy days are one of them. Your primary concern is merely to select an appropriate pair that pleases you without alienating your peers.

“Weather is a great metaphor for life – sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad, and there’s nothing much you can do about it but carry an umbrella.”
Pepper Giardino

Light and medium wash denims come across as being very casual, laidback, and lazy – ideas synonymous with Saturday afternoons spent playing baseball in the park, or strolling the shore. Denim that is either black or a dark wash is your best bet as it creates a sinewy silhouette that will make you smile; whilst holding fast to all semblance of cosmopolitan urbanity, which keeps you radiating professionalism. Another benefit of darker hued denim is that it easily conceals rain spots, so you always look put-together.

Since you are wearing rain boots, when choosing your denim du jour forgo the boyfriend jeans, and look for super skinny styles, like Genetic Denim’s Shane Recessive Cigarette Jeans or Marc by Marc Jacobs’ Skinny Stretch Jeans. Even if you don’t normally like how you look in skinny jeans, or pants with a tapered ankle, when you’re wearing boots they are ideal for the task, for they easily slip into the shaft of the shoe, without bunching around the knee in an unflattering fashion; plus they hug your curves in a way that keeps you looking phenomenal from the moment you slip them on, until the moment you slide them off!

Tales from the Trenches There’s no beating around the bush when it comes to the matter of outerwear; the plain and simple truth is that there is no easier way to effuse sophistication, affluence, high class, and complete magnificence in your wardrobe than via a taunting trench coat. Military jackets formulate a rugged motif, blazers invoke thoughts of getting down to business, hoodies oftentimes embrace an elementariness that takes your look down a notch, and puffer coats are quite frequently responsible for extra bulk on one’s body. The trench, on the other hand, is seductive, captivating, and amazingly alluring – all while providing you and your ensemble with an incredible amount of shelter from the raging storm.

“Anyone who says sunshine brings happiness has never danced in the rain.”
Unknown

Trench coats are a timeless staple which can truly change the way the world views both you and your wardrobe; therefore it is your duty to select one that will see you through snowball fights and soccer games, thunderstorms and romantic walks in the park, and everything in between. A trench that falls mid-thigh or right above the knee is the length to look for, as it protects the most important parts of your body from the nippy night air, without causing you the type of worry about soil spots around the hemline that so often go hand in hand with ankle-length designs.

When choosing the trench of your dreams color is one of the most important aspects to take into consideration. A camel shade like that seen on Burberry’s Packable Trench Coat in Dark Trench is the most classic choice, the one that makes you think of Nancy Drew and her penchant for getting into mischief; however, it is not your only option. Noir hues like Theory’s Cecilia Trench Coat in Black are a chic alternative which streamline your style, and add a dash of dapper finesse to your overall look; and if you’re truly daring, an animal print like that proffered by Marc by Marc Jacobs’ Into the Wild Trench is a snazzy way to unleash your inner fierce fashionista. Last, but most certainly not least, make sure to select a piece which features a belt that you can cinch around your waist with true European flair to create a sassy silhouette that makes heads turn!

“Some people walk in the rain, others just get wet.”
Roger Miller

The Bewitching Blouse One thing never to forget is that, despite the shameless storm whipping the outside world apart, never should you allow the nastiness to transpire in your ensemble. Gloom and doom could be written in the sky, but that is no reason to stifle the sauciness of your style; especially in terms of the blouse you have deemed worthy of wearing under such harsh conditions.

You may feel the desire to slip into one of your ratty, I’m-too-sick-to-get-out-of-bed tees and slink out the door, assuming that no one will see it hidden under the adorable outerwear you plan on wearing all day, but you’re wrong. Don’t allow this way of thinking to get the best of you, for it is leading you down an incorrect path – one that will leave you riddled with embarrassment. I have made the error of wearing a stained tee out of doors, believing that it would be concealed by my cute cardigans, or beautiful bombers; only to discover that such blissful pieces of outerwear had to be removed after too much time spent in overheated locations, exposing my fashion faux pas to the masses. Hence the reason why choosing a pretty top to decorate your form during stormy weather is an absolute must!

Tunics get the job done better than most for the sheer fact that they create balance for your stormy sophisticate look. A piece like mark’s Cold Shoulder Top is ideal for it clings to your curves in all the right places, yet provides a little slack which complements the skinny jeans currently adorning your lower half. If you want to translate more glamour in your styling to truly sparkle without turning to the assistance of beaming baubles, look no further than an embellished top like Diane von Furstenberg’s Bini Tunic or Re Collection’s Studded Patchwork Tunic. Dainty and demure ornamentations hold the power to brighten up an overcast day with minimal effort and fuss; yet never cease to work wonders in taking your look to new heights.

“Walking through puddles is my favorite metaphor for life.”
Jessi Lane Adams

Decorations to Combat the Drizzle Darlings, I truly hope that you weren’t under the impression that I would allow you to step foot outside without a few dazzling decorations highlighting your look. You may be strolling through a downpour, but that is no reason to brave the world unornamented. This time, however, you are going to do me a very important favor and forgo blissful baubles for a few key pieces that are slightly more minimalist, yet just as magnificent!

Scarves I don’t believe any accessory retains the power to dress up one’s look more fabulously than a showstopping scarf in a charming color which hangs lankly in the most luxurious of fashions across the front of your blouse yet keeps your neck warm all at once. mark’s For the Frill of It Scarf is ideal for the flirty girl looking to add a little flounce to her person; while the Warm Welcome Turtleneck Scarf harbors a unique aesthetic which contributes a touch of teasing volume to your upper half. Layer it over a feminine pendant, like the Have A Heart Necklace for an extra glimmer of glamour.

Gloves It is not during every storm that one needs a pair of gloves to keep her dainty digits warm; but for those truly chilly days having a pair on hand is highly recommended. Forget about the obnoxious mittens that your mother used to imprison your fingers with; for gloves that will give your hands the freedom to move and groove while staying tantalizingly toasty look for fingerless styles like Vince’s Cable Fingerless Gloves or opt for mark’s two-in-one Warm Welcome Flip Top Gloves which provide you with the option of flip-flopping back and forth from fingerless to mitten style!
Hats Baseball caps, and oversized knit beanies be gone! If a girl absolutely must incorporate a hat into her look du jour, the most flattering way to do so is with the assistance of something amazingly ambrosial which only serves to make her cuter than she already is! Channel your inner Daisy Buchanan via a twenties-inspired On Top of It Cloche; play the role of a gorgeous Dick Tracy with Eugenia Kim’s menswear-inspired Maxine Fedora with Ruched Vintage Ribbon; or simply cater to your saucy snow bunny with a Faux Fur Hat. As long as you have fun with your headwear, cute boys are sure to follow closely in your wake!

“Bad weather always looks worse through a window.”
Unknown

Umbrellas Based solely on the fact that you will be lugging it around with you all day; it is only feasible that you select an umbrella that is an extension of your glittering personality! Dark hues are quite often misconstrued as domineering, angry, and a bit stormy themselves; be the ray of sunshine walking down Park Avenue with something that makes a smile play upon the lips of random passersby. Look for pieces with the potential to keep you dry whilst adding a jazzy touch of cheekiness to your person! Embrace clever shapes mimicked after vintage styles like the Signature Bella Pagoda Umbrella; keep your eyes peeled for playful prints like the Be My Valentine Heart Dome; or stay classy with Burberry’s Automatic Check Umbrella. Be wild and crazy with your selection as a kitschy umbrella can truly take your style over the top!

For Your Listening Pleasure I don’t care if it’s raining cats and dogs at this very moment loveys; weather should never stand in the way of you getting your groove on! Thus, a few songs to help you get jiggy with it in true rainy day style!

Umbrella - Rihanna
I Have Friends in Holy Spaces - Panic At the Disco
I’m Only Happy When It Rains - Garbage
It Never Rains in Southern California - Albert Hammond
Umbrella - The Postal Service
Famous Blue Raincoat - Leonard Cohen
Plainsong - The Cure
Rainy Day - Guster
When It Rains - Paramore
Why Does It Always Rain on Me? - Travis

Style Secrets: Stylish When Sick

“I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired.”
Fannie Lou Hamer

I really can’t say that I blame you. In fact, I’m sure I would feel the same way if I found myself in your current situation. It is completely understandable that when you’re feeling under the weather you want nothing more than to collapse into a heap in your rattiest pair of pajamas, tuck yourself under a fluffy comforter for optimal warmth, and surround yourself with boxes of tissues, Bon Bons, and fashion magazines that will see you through the sniffles in true sickly style. Unfortunately, harsh and hectic schedules do not always allow for such luxuries.

One cannot hide away from the world catering to a minute cold by spending the day in hibernation; at the same time you do not want to frighten random passersby with garish garb or red-rimmed eyes courtesy of a pesky ailment that has deemed it appropriate to plague you. It is at this particular time that you must embrace effortlessness.

Attempting to fool the world by trying to conceal your feverish condition via blazingly colored clothing and ravishing red lips is often the quickest way to signify that you are, in fact, unwell. By retaining an understated, natural, effortless glamour about your person, your look screams bright-eyed and bushy-tailed – exactly what you want.

As with everything, however, creating an uncomplicated presence is not as simple as slithering out of bed and scampering out the door. It takes time and planning to get that offhand appearance; whilst staying true to the number one style rule of being sick: maintaining comfort. To put it bluntly, if you are unable to cozy up in your clothes, be it on your best friend’s couch or in your own private boudoir, then your frail form is accoutered incorrectly. As long as you keep this maxim in mind, of course, you are well on your way to looking stylish when sick!

A Drapey Dream Fitted frocks and tops are one of the most magnificent ways to highlight your curves and show off your figure; but when the flu bug bites the absolute last thing you want is to feel confined in your clothing. At times like this drapey duds become a classy comrade which ensure that you maintain complete blissful elegance without forsaking your trademark sassy style.

Tunics, short dresses, and billowy blouses are essentials for your I-don’t-want-to-get-out-of-bed wardrobe. The loose fit makes getting from here to there more comfortable in your suffering state; while retaining a bohemian-inspired ambiance that makes your appearance very nonchalant and indifferent – two temperaments that only work to make you more irresistible to cute boys!

“‘Tis healthy to be sick sometimes.”
Henry David Thoreau

Search for styles with slight embellishments like the knotted bust line of mark’s Knot Just a Tee-Shirt; empire waists which flutter and flow about your form in a haphazard yet heavenly fashion like the Stay Tuned Tunic; or cuts with versatility which make it simple to switch up your look in seconds like the Wear With All Mini Dress. Pieces like this stand the test of time and never fail in making one look chic – regardless of how miserable you may currently feel!

The Tight Stuff My loves, we spend countless hours per week striving to tone our thighs and gluteus maximus muscles in a fashion that will keep our bodies tight, fit, and capable of donning any type of legwear that piques our interest; therefore it is only fair that, as the fashionistas we are, we peruse opaque tights, pretty patterns, and luscious leggings at a time when we need a bit of bottom half bliss. And that, darlings, is when we are feeling downright debilitated!

Denim is spectacular when we’re feeling energized, revitalized, and hotter than a firecracker sizzling in Times Square on New Year’s Eve; when you’re feeling unfabulous, however, they take on the role of the devil. The J Brand 10” Ankle Skinny Jeans that once made us feel fantastic now make us feel frumpy; the Citizens of Humanity Morrison Slim Boot Cut Jeans that made you feel beautiful yesterday have turned beastly and now make you feel bloated; the Joe’s Jeans’ Chelsea Ultra Slim Moto Jeans that looked marvelous in the dressing room mirror just last week have become malicious by making you look massive. By all means, do not toss these items into the garbage no matter how much your last dose of NyQuil tempts you to do so; simply set them aside for another day. One needs resilience, buoyancy, and flexibility when they are weak; thus, ditch the denim during this delicate time and embrace styles with stretch!

“If you treat a sick child like an adult and a sick adult like a child, everything usually works out pretty well.”
Ruth Carlisle

Slip a pair of Commando’s Matte Opaque Tights on under a tunic that covers your tush for a cozy effect that tantalizes; show a playful sliver of skin via Only Hearts’ Lace Tights – the perfect pairing for your feisty frock; or mimic the denim look with mark’s Blue Jean Denim Leggings. Keeping your legs covered when you’re tormented by the chills is a complete necessity in your quest to “get well soon,” yet harbors the ability to take your look du jour to new heights; ergo, let your bubbly, effervescent personality shine through and have fun with your legwear!

Happy Feet Slippers may be whispering sweet nothings in your ear at this very moment; but please do not make the mistake of traipsing out of doors with nothing but these accoutering your feverish feet! Around the house slippers are absolutely fantastic at ensuring your toes stay toasty; but their scant fibers do not hold the same power once worn out of the confines of your cozy abode and onto the chilly concrete that is omnipresent in the big, bad outside world. As an aside, they also make one feel completely dumpy at a time when what you truly need is a kick of desirability. For this reason alone, slide those shabby slippers underneath your bed and stuff your tootsies into something a little more stunning!

Levende Waters once said “Funny that a pair of really nice shoes makes us feel good in our heads – at the extreme opposite end of our bodies.” Such words are completely true. Fabulous footwear has the ability to transform one from the inside out. They add that special je ne sais quoi to your look, whilst boosting your confidence at the very same moment. Of course, when sick, it is your mission to keep your feet looking chic yet feeling contented all at once. Blissful booties and out-of-this-world Oxfords satisfy both of these prerequisites.

“It is better to be rich and healthy than poor and sick.”
Dave Barry

Oxfords and booties possess a type of hoity-toity class that makes it possible for you to induce stares with your style, despite the fact that you are sick as a dog. The aesthetic of both is very highfalutin and fun; yet proffers an air of elegance that streamlines your silhouette, and pulls your entire appearance together with a seductive smirk to the world.

You may adore stilettos; but now is not the time to don such killer shoes. When one is feeling under the weather, their balance is not at its best; therefore, stick to flats like Steven’s Melin Pinked Perforated Oxfords or Frye’s Erin Oxford Flats. The old-fashioned styling contributes a touch of retro glamour to your dress, while adding a snazzy shape to your overall look. If you absolutely must have an extra hint of height, look for well-shaped wedges like Jeffrey Campbell’s Tick Wedge Booties or chunky heels like Ash’s Easy Long Cuff Booties. These two designs will give you the lift that you’re looking for without surrendering satisfaction!

A Jumble of Jewels! Anyone who told you that accessories were unnecessary at a time when you are unhealthy was sadly mistaken! A splash of sparkle makes everything better, including a runny nose or aching bones. On that account, go wild! Raid your grandmother’s jewelry box for vintage finds of the pearl variety; beg your BFF for permission to play dress-up with her diamonds and rhinestones; and, most importantly, dig through your own bureau for baubles that will make you twinkle, shimmer, and glitter like the gorgeous creature you are!

“A healthy body is a guest chamber for the soul: a sick body is a prison.”
Francis Bacon Sr.

Bigger is most definitely better in terms of jewelry when you’re feeling less than fabulous. The bedazzling brightness of such pieces detracts attention from your pasty pallor; whilst shedding a bit of light upon your good taste in trinkets. Oversized cocktail rings like Alexis Bittar’s Onyx Oval Klimt Ring and Noir Jewelry’s Midnight Ice Double Knuckle Ring are a must. Their design is over-the-top and ostentatious allowing them to flirt coquettishly and play a subtle game of hanky-panky with anyone who dares glance in their direction; while ornamenting your frail fingers in true high-fashion!

Looks for Those Feeling Lousy Kittens, I realize that you are suffering at the moment. That your mind and body feels weak. Please do not let this get you down. I would never leave the side of an ailing friend; therefore, I have put together full ensembles with you, my bedridden besties, in mind. Simply choose the style you want to rock for the day and slip it on for optimal sassiness that will have you feeling better in no time!

A slouchy, pale gray off-the-shoulder top layered over a lace camisole (allow it to peek out if you’d like), black leggings, Oxford flats, a handful of your favorite chunky bangles, and a long necklace or two.
A loose-fitting black mini dress that falls just below the derriere, patterned or lace tights to add texture to your lower half, wedge booties, and massive rings.
An empire-waist top in a neutral tone, denim leggings, black or gray booties with a chunky heel, and an erratic assortment of rings, bracelets, and necklaces.

“I could have another moan but I’m sick to death of my own whining.”
Steve Bruce
