{beauty board} the scoop on strobing

strobing
Feeling the dewy, radiant skin that will make you #GlowLikeJLO? Now is the perfect time to try it out because summer! Dubbed strobing, the re-branded trend {it's a fancy new way to refer to highlighting - more on that later} is replacing contouring in a big way and causing major #skingoals in the social media world. So what is it?

Strobing is, essentially, highlighting the high points of your face - cheekbones, chin, brow bones, bridge of your nose, and Cupid's bow. How to do it right?

Choose the right shade! Finishes come in mattes and shimmers {I'm a massive fan of the latter}, and don't discriminate between skintones; but colors matter. You want to select a highlight shade that is lighter than your skin - i.e. pearl hues work on light to medium skintones; whereas gold, bronze, and rose gold shades are lit on dark skintones.

What about formula? LIQUID formulation gives you optimal control and creates a subtle, lit-from-within look. I apply liquid highlighters {my go-to is BECCA's Shimmering Skin Perfector in OPAL} with the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge}. CREAM formulation can be applied with your fingertips {use your ring finger for this} and leaves behind a natural dewy, polished finish. POWDER {my personal favorite} packs the most punch and is oh so necessary if you're after a bold, striking glow. I apply mine with the Fan Brush from the e.l.f. 11 Piece Brush Collection.

Need some inspo as to which products to buy? I'm featuring some of my faves in all formulations below! You glow girl!

NOTD: Formula X #ColorCurators: Ballet Beautiful Edition Nail Polish in Lilac Fairy

Two coats of Formula X #ColorCurators: Ballet Beautiful Edition Nail Polish in Lilac Fairy. Soft Lilac Creme.

I was preeetty confident that Lilac Fairy would be the standout shade for me from this collection based on bottle alone, and I was so right.

Though similar to Ciaté Mini Paint Pot Nail Polish in Double Bubblegum, Lilac Fairy has a dove gray undertone that makes it feel a little more ethereal and ballet-esque.

Formula here was fabulush! Creamy, quick to reach opacity, and just so pretty! If you only buy one color from the Ballet Beautiful collection, I vote this one!

links à la mode: the IFB weekly roundup {may 26, 2016 edition}

Desktop-001

I love a community. As I write this I can hear a friendly banter between my postman and my boisterous neighbor. It makes me smile. I love this IFB community. I enjoy catching glimpses of you all interacting with one another through various modes. Often sharing knowledge, giving accolades where it’s due, and linking up all on your own. It’s the humanity. The seemingly small interactions and kindnesses that make me feel more optimistic about the day.

Thoughts on a certain music icon go beyond fashion and touch on his social reverberations. However, it’s probably the fashion that caught our attention in the first place. The trends that IFB bloggers were showing off this week may not seem like trends at a glance but it’s how they are put together. Chambray not only on the top but on the bottom too. Can we just all agree that this is a wardrobe essential now? Also, white on white and then some more white with stripes or a tropical print will get you through this Summer.

I’m certainly an onlooker in this fashion blogging world of yours, but you can be sure I am cheering from the sidelines. I don’t expect everyone to submit to LALM on the weekly, and truth be told, I’m relieved that everyone doesn’t–I would be reading for days! But… I do miss you when you’re gone.

Essie Resort 2016 4PC Mini Set Swatches + Review

I wasn't planning on buying Essie's Resort 2016 4PC Mini Set because the colors in the bottle seemed very meh to me; but when I spotted it on sale at Ulta, I thought I'd give it a shot - especially since Nama-Stay The Night was on my shopping list. Three words: Best. Decision. Ever. BBs, if you are judging this collection by bottle shade alone {like I was}, you need to run out and try them for yourselves because they are some of the most unique shades I have ever laid eyes {or hands} on. See for yourself!

Nama-Stay The Night is an Energetic Goa Blue Creme. It's not often that you come across a super-saturated cerulean blue shade as stunning as this, so when you do you kind of have to add it to your stash pronto - and for good reason. Nama-Stay The Night, aside from having one of the best polish names ever has an absolutely brilliant formula - being top-notch in density, opacity, and flow. The true icing on the cake though? No staining upon removal. This is 2 coats.

Delhi Dance is a Silky Sari Pink Creme. This color is giving me liiiife. For reals babes! How many pink polishes do we all have in our personal collections? Too many, amiright? Well, Delhi Dance is unlike all of them! It's like Pepto-Bismol meets Barbie meets Dubble Bubble Bubblegum, and it. is. brilliant. Totally digging the formula here. One swipe, two swipe, top coat, done! What is up with all of the amazing pinks in this year's collections?! I'm totally feeling them! This is 2 coats.

Going Guru is a Meditative Mint Lime Creme. Hellllooo gorgeous! Ooh girls I am so feeling this shade {and corresponding name} rn. Going Guru is like the love child of a pina colada and a key lime pie - it has the frostiness of the former and the lime kiss of the latter. This one was made for getting caught in the rain, ja feel? Formula here was slightly thinner than that of the other shades; however, it was still 100% fab - two smooth, even coats {that are hyper-glossy} and you are good. to. go. This is 2 coats.

Taj-Ma-Haul is a Spicy Apricot Marigold Creme. Never, ever, ever did I think that Taj-Ma-Haul would tickle my fancy, but after applying it to my nails...love, pure love. Ladies, this color is unlike anything I have ever seen before in the world of nail polish {and I've seen a lot}. Taj-Ma-Haul reminds me of curry powder {so perfect given the India inspo of this collection}, and would be a total smash during fall / Thanksgiving festivities! Formula here is flawless, and infused with a natural gorgeous gloss that will keep your tips glowing. Get it girls! This is 2 coats.

AVAILABILITY: Skincare By Alana for the mini set; Amazon for individual bottles.

PRICE: $17.00 for the quartet; or buy individual bottles separately for $8.50 each.

{what's in my} ipsy may 2016 glam bag!

I have been subscribing to ipsy for about a year now, and while I share the contents of my bags on Instagram @cateyesandskinnyjeans each month, I have never reviewed them here - that. ends. now. Moving forward, I will be sharing my monthly ipsy bags with you right here, because I love them, and think you will too!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with ipsy, it is a beauty subscription service that costs $10 per month {awesome deal IMO}, and consists of a collectible makeup bag {can also double as a clutch} along with 5 beauty samples that are customized to your personal beauty profile {which you can change/update at anytime}. I love getting subscription boxes, but don't have a ton of extra cash to spare, so I find ipsy to be the best value as each month's bags are adorable, the products are of fantastic quality, and their stylists are top-notch {and some of my fave beauty bloggers}. That being said, let's get to the bag!

May's theme was Destination Chic {think glam road trip}. Inside my bag was an INSPR Beauty Eye Fluff Brush {$12.00}, Smashbox X-Rated Mascara, Pacifica Love 3 Natural Mineral Coconut Eye Shadow Trio, Clark's Botanicals Smoothing Marine Cream, and Soo Ae Collagen Essence Masks in Propolis, Brightening, and Collagen.

Brushes are one of my favorite items to receive in my glam bags, and this one from INSPR Beauty does not disappoint! It retails for $12.00 and is a game-changer when it comes to blending. The name is also insanely accurate - the bristles are super soft!

Last year I received Smashbox's Full Exposure Mascara in one of my glam bags and I absolutely hated it {it did nothing for my lashes}, so I was hesitant when Smashbox's X-Rated Mascara popped up in my bag this month. Luckily, this one I LOVE. It lengthens my short lashes, adds deep definition and color, and volumizes - everything I look for in a mascara. I wouldn't put it in HG territory, but I would contemplate repurchasing in the future.

Since eye products are my thang, I was ecstatic to find the Pacifica Love 3 Natural Mineral Coconut Eye Shadow Trio. You guys, this trio is everything for summer {with shade names to match}, and teeny tiny enough to pop in your bag when you're on the go. Crush is a vanilla color {great for under the browbone}, Skinny Dip is a rosy/rust-leaning copper shade {clearly my fave, and ideal for all over the lid!}, and Lovely is a brown hue with mauve undertones {great for contouring the crease}. These are 100% vegan, and cruelty-free. The swatches you see above are without primer. I wore all three shades a few days ago over e.l.f.'s Glitter Primer, and they lasted all day without creasing. Additionally, while they swatch shimmery, the shimmer isn't super evident when on the lid. I, personally, wish they were a bit more pigmented, as you really have to dig into the palette for deep pigmentation; but they apply beautifully and are super soft, so no complaints!

This is probably my least favorite product in my bag this month. Not because it's ineffective, but because I'm not a big moisturizer person. I do, however, like to use products like this on my knees, elbows, and ankles before applying self-tanner, which is how I used the Clark's Botanicals Smoothing Marine Cream. It's very hydrating without being greasy, and feels light on skin; it also has a day spa fragrance which makes you feel ultra-pampered. The downside is the price of the full-size. At $115.00 a pop, I will definitely not be purchasing in the future - but it was fun to try.

Okay, so I feel like I hit the ipsy jackpot this month because I received 7 products as opposed to the typical 5, because of the inclusion of the Soo Ae Collagen Essence Masks in Propolis, Brightening, and Collagen - yes, 3 masks! This was my first time trying sheet masks, and I feel like I'm still trying to adjust to them {I typically use cream masks}, so this was a great introduction. I personally felt a little alien-ish while wearing them; but I loved the way they left my skin looking and feeling - fresh and bright. I will likely be buying the Brightening one again, as I loved how glowy it left my skin!

A flash of color. A few spoken words. A moment of clarity. Often, motivation comes when you least expect it. It’s that burst of energy that sends you on your productive way. It gives purpose to projects and focuses even the wildest ideas. It makes sense of the absurd and it’s the key to unlocking your next big idea.

IFB Bloggers seemed focused on one main theme this week. Where one may garner inspiration. Art, photography, history, fashion icons, books, subculture, street style, peers–just to name a few. There were also glimpses into the end results of inspiration with Malta’s Fashion Week Awards, creative hair, alternatives to fast fashion, and what engaged French youth can do on limited time.

In the words of Albert Einstein, “Creativity is intelligence having fun.” Glad to read that all you brainiacs are having a good time!

Mascara: Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Curling & Lifting Mascara | Tanner: VersaSpa Face Moisturizing Gradual Tanner | Foam: Rituals Cosmetics Shower Foam in ZENSATION | Skin Hydration: Talika Photo-Hydra Day Lotion | Conditioner: NIOXIN System 3 Scalp Therapy Conditioner | Scalp Cleanser: NIOXIN System 3 Cleanser

If you follow me on Instagram @cateyesandskinnyjeans, you know that I am wild about beauty subscription boxes {because nothing beats beauty mail, amiright?}, so I was beyond when I was offered the chance to try GLOSSYBOX for the month of May!

For those of you who aren't familiar with GLOSSYBOX, it is a monthly beauty subscription service wherein you receive 5 deluxe size beauty products for $21 a month based on the personal beauty profile you fill out when you sign up. For reference, due to the fact that my box was complimentary, I did not fill out a beauty profile beforehand, so my box was kind of a random assortment of products {oddly enough, they were basically perfect}.

Before I get to the products, I need to give major props to the included fold-out pamphlet which provides you with Tidbits for each product in your box to help you make the most of it; along with size and retail price of each product; and, my personal favorite, the social media username for each company! I cannot tell you how much time I waste looking up the Instagram and Twitter usernames of each company whose products I receive in subscription boxes {if you subscribe to anything, you know what I mean}; the fact that they were included is huge {not to mention way helpful} IMO. Onto the products!

As previously mentioned, the products you see above were generated for me without my having filled out a beauty profile; yet they fit me almost perfectly - you'll see in a minute.

You all know that I am a mascara junkie {#sorrynotsorry}, so I have tried Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Curling & Lifting Mascara in the past {in fact, it's one of my HG mascaras}; but I loved getting a mini version because it's perfect for on-the-go touch-ups. This is a product that I will definitely re-buy, and highly recommend.

Fact: VersaSpa Face Moisturizing Gradual Tanner may be my favorite discovery from this box because it serves two purposes: 1} it moisturizes facial skin; 2} it gradually tans skin. I go through bottles of sunless tanning lotions each summer to score a sunkissed glow, but my face never gets the same tanned treatment because I'm terrified to put self-tanners on my face; this stuff takes the worry out of that. I've been using it daily on my face for the past week, mixing it in with my sunscreen to apply, and while it doesn't give you a just-baked look, it leaves behind a natural, golden glow that looks healthy. It also has no fragrance, unlike most tanning products. Serious l-o-v-e for this!

I'm not usually one for pampering myself in the shower, but last week, after a particularly killer dance sesh that left my legs feeling dead, I tried Rituals Cosmetics Shower Foam in ZENSATION, and it is straight-up luxe. The organic rice milk & cherry blossom fragrance is ultra relaxing and stress-reducing; while the gel to foam effect is fun and feels amazing. The fact that you literally only need one pump also makes the $15 price tag well worth it. I've already bought a full size for my sister!

I honestly didn't want to like the Talika Photo-Hydra Day Lotion because the full-size bottle is $29.00 - a pricey addiction that I don't need; but O.M.G.. This right here is a new obsession. The moisturizing effect is unmatachable, making your skin feel hydrated and non-greasy all day, without weighing it down; but what I especially love is the fact that it makes. you. glow. It also works as an amazing base for makeup. I will definitely definitely be re-buying this.

Last, but not least, the hair. I was iffy when I spotted the two NIOXIN products, as I've always equated NIOXIN with thinning hair; but after having used both the NIOXIN System 3 Scalp Therapy Conditioner, and the NIOXIN System 3 Cleanser my opinion has changed. I found that the Conditioner and Cleanser really added a lot of volume to my hair at the root level, and added a nice amount of shine to follicles. My mom colors her hair and has been experiencing dry scalp, so I passed these onto her so she could give them a try, and together they helped to heal her scalp. Though pricey, I think that they're both worth an occasional buy - and after seeing how they worked on my mom, I definitely recommend them if you color your hair.

First Impression? Total thumbs up! I liked the fact that some of the sample sizes included were bigger than the ones you receive in other subscription boxes, as it allowed you to really get a good feel for the product before deciding whether or not it was worth the buy. I'm especially excited to see what products I would receive if I had a beauty profile, as these randomly picked products were seriously fab!

China Glaze Whip It Good 6-Piece Mini Set Swatches + Review

I love neon nail colors, but I rarely buy them as I honestly cannot stand the extra underwear step they require {white polish to make the color more vibrant}; so when I heard that China Glaze's new 80s-inspired Whip It Good 6 Piece Mini Set was a collection of neons that didn't require underwear, I knew I had to try it out. Behold, one of the funnest nail collections of 2016!

What I Like About Blue is a Turquoise Blue Shimmer. If summer in a bottle is what you're after, you basically cannot go wrong with this blue beauty. The shimmer, the sparkle... this pretty has. it. all. Formula here is flawless. I found that What I Like About Blue dried to a satin/semi-matte finish that I didn't care for; glossy top coat really brings out the depth of the color, reminding you of the sparkling Caribbean Sea. Obsessed! This is 2 coats.

Papa Don't Peach is a Neon Orange with Gold Microglitter. OMG I'm in L-O-V-E. Ladies, this. color. is. everything. Papa Don't Preach was made for summer lovin' and having a blast - I kid you not. Formula here was flawless. Aside from the fact that it applies beautifully; it is v reminiscent of OPI's Liquid Sand formula, having that gritty, almost 3D effect. Having been a huge fan of Liquid Sand {bring it back OPI!}, this is a total bonus IMO. This is 3 coats.

Whip It Good is a Bright Pastel Yellow Creme. If Whip It Good were a shoe, it would be the Jeffrey Campbell Darian Sandals Aria Montgomery wore on Season Two of Pretty Little Liars. Fact. Though not a full-fledged neon, Whip It Good is one of the brightest pastel yellows I have ever encountered, making it unsurprising that it fits right in with the neon family. You guys, I love this color, but the formula was a total pain. I actually blame this on the fact that the bottle was opened when it arrived, so the fact that it was thick and refused to even out is likely due to that. Regardless of the reason, it was frustrating. This is 3 coats.

I'll Pink To That is a Neon Fuchsia Creme. Bright pinks rarely catch my eye, but I am so feeling I'll Pink To That! The formula for this bright beauty is magnificent; and the color? Straight. Up. Summer. Though not a complete neon hue; I'll Pink To That does dry semi-matte, so you'll want to add a swipe or two of top coat for shine. This is 2 coats.

I Got A Blue Attitude is a Bright Blurple Creme. I can never say no to a good blurple, and I Got A Blue Attitude is one of my new faves. The formula here is so smooth and lush to work with, reaching opacity with minimal effort or fuss. And the brightness! In keeping with the 80s feel, I just can't get enough, just can't get enough. I did find the formula here slightly thinner than the rest of the collection, so you definitely want to be careful before applying the color directly to the nail otherwise you may have a running ish. This is 2 coats.

We Got The Beet is a Purple with Golden Microglitter. In case you thought your eyes were deceiving you...they're not. I actually do not have swatches of We Got The Beet {even though it was included in this set} because it arrived completely dried out and unusable. I'm not sure if I just got a bad set this time around {with 3 out of 6 bottles arriving open}, but I have never encountered a problem like this before, so I found it v frustrating. I notice that China Glaze packages their mini sets where a piece of cardboard surrounds the neck of the polish bottle {something that Essie, OPI, and Orly don't do}, and I think that is opening the bottles, rendering them useless. Here's to hoping they change that practice.

AVAILABILITY: ULTA.

PRICE: $15.00 for the 6-Piece Mini Kit; or $7.50 per full-size bottle.
