{beauty board} bold gold shadow + purple liner

I usually contour my eyes with varying shadow shades; but I love the simplicity of a one-swipe system {i.e. one swipe of shadow from lashline to brow, followed by a swipe of lower-liner from outer corner to inner, followed by a swipe of mascara} - especially in glistening metallics and lush jewel tones. It's a look that has been seen on Charlotte Free in the Maybelline Pure Pigments adverts {above}, as well as the Nina Agdal for bebe fall 2013 campaign {both using bold gold shadow + purple liner}; and is super stunning for high-drama Girls' Night Out looks, but can also be adapted for the daytime hours {I myself have worn it for early-morning shopping dates}. Here are a few of my favorite products to Get the Look:

gold shadow
ONE: MAKE UP FOR EVER in Yellow Gold 10 {$20.00} TWO: Maybelline Pure Pigments in Wild Gold {$6.99} THREE: Lancome in 24 Karat {$19.00} FOUR: NARS in Corcovado {$24.00} FIVE: COVERGIRL in Gold Flame 330 {$5.94}

If you don't like a lot of fuss when it comes to makeup, you can't go wrong with MAKE UP FOR EVER Eyeshadow in Yellow Gold 10. It's crease resistant, so it looks just as fab at the end of the day as it did when you first applied. Maybelline Color Tattoo Pure Pigments Loose Powder in Wild Gold is a must if you want hyper-pigmentation on a budget. Loose Powder is not something you frequently see in a drugstore brand; but it is a great addition to makeup drawers, as it is buildable and very easy to blend. Lancôme Color Design Sensational Effects Eye Shadow Smooth Hold in 24 Karat is the epitome of luxe, and worth every penny. The shimmer effect is intense {but not so much so that you can't wear it to the office}; and the texture is like velvet. Definitely one of those obsession-worthy products.

If you prefer shadow sticks, NARS Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in Corcovado is basically an essential. It's creamy, and brightens up your eyes in a total OMG way. One of my new loves, however, is COVERGIRL Flamed Out Eye Shadow Pencil in Gold Flame 330. The gel-like formulation is soft and creamy; and there's a cooling effect when applied that feels amazing. It doesn't hurt that it's insanely affordable either.

purple liner
ONE: Urban Decay in Ransom {$6.00} TWO: Maybelline Pure Pigments in Potent Purple {$6.99} THREE: NYX in Purple Blaze {$8.00} FOUR: RIMMEL in Paranoid Purple {$4.49} FIVE: Mineral Essence in Purple Nebula {$12.00}

Urban Decay Vintage 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils are like the holy grail of eyeliners because they never fade and go on super smoothly. Ransom is the perfect color for recreating this liner look as it is a bright iridescent purple that will fully complement the bold gold shadow. If you don't have a steady hand when applying pen/wand-style liners, Maybelline Color Tattoo Pure Pigments Loose Powder in Potent Purple is a great solution for nailing your liner look - simply apply it with an eyeliner brush, which gives you a bit more control. My personal obsession is the NYX Slide On Eye Liner Pencil in Purple Blaze. I own these in about 15 colors, and cannot rave about them enough. The pigmentation is so amazing; and they never flake or fade {even if you, like me, wear them for 12+ hours a day}.

Double-duty beauty is always a nice feature; so if you want a liner that can work overtime as a shadow, RIMMEL ScandalEyes Eye Shadow Stick in Paranoid Purple is fab. Use it as a liner one night, and create a smoky purple eye the next. Like the Maybelline Loose Powder, Mineral Essence Liner Shadow in Purple Nebula is an easy choice if applying liner isn't your forte. This one also has silver undertones / particles, so if you love an extra kick of shimmer, you'll adore it.

{fashion folio} the luxe sweatshirt

the stylish sweatshirt
Kate Spade New York Cueva Rosa Stud Earrings + Sam Edelman Desiree Pump in Zinc / Classic Nude + Sole Society Elsie Convertible Clutch in Blush + TOPSHOP Long Sleeve Sweat in Grey + TOPSHOP Moto Sky Blue Joni Jeans + Liz Palacios Orange Caboche and Swarovski Crystal Bib Necklace + Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick by Kate # 111

Once regarded as a form of athletic wear meant to accouter your upper half during hot and sticky workouts at the gym, or keep you cozy during bouts with the flu; the sweatshirt has morphed into a stylish necessity for the girl-about-town - tempering, toning down, and otherwise casual-izing sexier looks.

Opt for a heather gray hue in a slightly slouchy fit, paired with a sky blue pair of skinnies - the voluminosity of the top is the perfect juxtaposition to the sinewy aesthetic of the bottoms. Stick to the neutral palette you've got going on with a structured clutch in nude coupled with a sandy-colored single-sole pump {a gold metallic cap toe makes it more glam}. An orange bib necklace adds an unexpected vibrancy to the muted tones; while a matte bold red lip brightens your face in a sassy fashion. Pop in a pair of oversized stud earrings as a finishing touch {they bring out the sparkle in your eyes. Trust}, and go get your groove on because yes...this look is totally Girls' Night Out / Date Night apropos.

{beauty board} rose gold

navy & nude

navy & nude
"Blue jeans, white shirt..." it's my all-season go-to for fashion {as are Diamonds and Rings }. Perhaps that's why I'm totally loving the navy palette for fall. It's slightly less harsh than deep blacks; yet every bit as sophisticated. And when coupled with nude tones, it becomes the perfect color combo for transitioning from warm summer days to crisp fall nights. Here are a few of my navy & nude fashion and beauty faves {clockwise from Top Right}:

Rebecca Minkoff Craig Camera Bag in Navy {$195.00}

Theory Randelle Fine-Knit Linen-Blend Top {$235.00}

Loeffler Randall Felix Suede Booties in Navy {$395.00}

Sole Society Tatiana Mid Heel Sandal in Midnight Cuban Sand {$59.95}

NOTD: Milani Cosmetics Beach Front

One coat of Milani Nail Lacquer in Beach Front. Sky / Robin's Egg Blue with Silver / Pale Blue Shimmer throughout.

I love a pale-yet-bright blue for spring / summer, and Beach Front completely fits the bill - with the added bonus of shimmer {which I wish were more visible in these swatches, but the sun was being uncooperative that day - le sigh}.

The shimmer in Beach Front is what sets this color apart - it's like little glassflecks that make the shade richer, and more dimensional. The second thing that makes Beach Front stand out? The formula. Smooth, buttery, and incredibly easy to work with. If you're a blue polish fan you need this one in your stash!

Isabel Marant gave me a taste for pointy-toes years ago with the release of the {absolutely perfect} Poppy Suede Pumps. 5 beauty products I would buy again {part 3}!

Read Part 1 and Part 2 of this series.

5 beauty products I'm digging;
that you totally need to try for yourself. Trust.

5 to try {part 3}

{1} Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion Tube - Original {$20.00} I apply this from upper lashline to eyebrow. It's fast-drying {so you can start applying liner and shadow within seconds}; sheer nude in color {so it works with all skintones}; and keeps my eyeshadow intact for 12+ hours. I honestly don't think I could survive without this product.

{2} L'Oreal Colour Riche Lipstick in Fairest Nude {$8.95} If you, like me, love nude lipstick, this is total bang for your buck. It's a pinky beige shade that doesn't give you that dead-girl-walking / chalky look; and is ridiculously moisturizing, hydrating, and creamy. Also pertinent...the L'Oreal imprint on the actual lipstick is so. luxe.

{3} Hard Candy Glamazon Glow All the Way Face & Body Luminizer in Bronze 318 {8.00} If you love a sunkissed glow all over your body {without having to slather yourself in self-tanner}, this is a must. Mix just a tiny bit with whatever product you want {lotion, highlighter, sunscreen...}, and rub it on to make your skin radiant. NOTE: There are shimmer particles in this; but they are not overly sparkly - just subtle and glamorously glowy.

{4} Nicole Richie 'Nicole' Eau de Parfum 3.4 oz. {$69.00} This is one of those fragrances that makes you feel feminine and works for all occasions - day or night. It perfectly balances sensuality, sophistication, and sweetness using a beautiful blend of vanilla, florals {Moroccan rose, lily of the valley}, and hints of fruit {blackberry, orange}. I especially love the traces of sandalwood and cashmere wood - they are so completely intoxicating - without being overpowering.

{5} mark Touch & Glow Shimmer Cream Cubes All Over Face Palette {$16.00} Don't let the candy colors deceive you; this is one of the most brilliant face palettes ever. Whether you use this all-over your face {like me}, or simply try it on your lips, lids, or cheekbones, you will be left with the most beautiful, just-kissed glow. What I love is how adaptable this palette is to all skintones and types - literally anyone can use it for a pinch of pretty.

these boots were made for walking...

Say hello to Sole Society's Vivienne Ankle Bootie in Black.
A shoe that gives new meaning to the lyrics
"These boots were made for walking..."
Last week I tucked these beauties in my carryall when I headed for LA. At 3" the heel seemed perfectly apropos for wining, dining, and shopping...and I couldn't have been more right.

They kept me completely comfy while rifling through racks of vintage Teddy Bear Coats seemingly ripped from Margot Tenenbaum or Penny Lane's personal wardrobe at the Rose Bowl Flea Market; while playing the part of chic sophisticate for a late-night dinner {I paired them with black tights and a sequin mini}.

The leather strap detailing is the perfect luxe counterpoint to the urbane vibe of the suede construction. Even better? The midnight black hue makes me look leggy {especially when coupled with an all-black ensemble}; and for a girl who teeters just a smidge above the 5'1 mark, that. is. everything.

Walking in LA? Totally doable in these babies. I may just need to add the Mushroom / Black and Tan to my bootie collection next.

{beauty board} copper shadow

Metallics have been my shadow go-to since I first started wearing makeup for their ability to juxtapose the worlds of the neutral, natural eye with that of a shimmering, glamorous gaze. While I've always reached for gold-flecked bronze colors {Urban Decay's Half-Baked Eyeshadow is my can't-live-without}; I was thrilled to see a barrage of glossy, copper colors saunter down the runway, as the shade is warm and cozy {perfect for fall}; looks chic on all eye colors and skintones; and can be worn day or night depending on how heavily or softly you apply. Here are a few of my favorite palettes and shades to help you get the copper look:

copper 2
ONE: Clarins {$42.00} TWO: Lancome in BRONZE AMOUR {$49.00} THREE: Giorgio Armani #15 COPPER / BLACK GREY {$33.00} FOUR: Kat Von D in DEVOTION {$16.00} FIVE: Laura Mercier in TERRACOTTA {$23.00} SIX: Maybelline in COPPER CHIC {$8.31}

If you want the ability to rock the copper trend and mix, match, and blend other colors to create your own custom shades, the Clarins Splendours Colour Quartet & Liner Eye Palette is perfect for you. Lancôme always delivers the glam, and the Color Design 5 Shadow & Liner Palette in Bronze Amour is no different. The colors are bold, the finishes silky, and the overall color combos essential for creating a neutral smoky eye. Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Intense Silk Eyeshadow in #15 Copper / Black Grey is a must if you're short on time - one swipe is all you need for killer eyes.

My favorite of the bunch {and one of the most affordable options} is Kat Von D Shade Shifter Eyeshadow in Devotion, which subtly shifts color {very chameleon-like} whenever you blink or turn your head. When it comes to makeup, I love baked anything - including this Laura Mercier Baked Eye Colour in Terracotta {also available at Beautique UK}. Apply it wet for high drama; and skip the primer if you want - this one never creases or fades. For affordability that still packs punch, you can't go wrong with Eye Studio Color Plush Silk Eyeshadow in Copper Chic. It's under $10, and serves up velvety textures and high pigmentation.

NOTD: nails inc. Leather Effects in Noho

Two coats of nails inc. Leather Effect Leather Polish in Noho. Black.

Oh. My. Gooooosh. Ladies, I am so in love right now. Black polish + my vampire white skin? Usually not a combo I love, but the texture {who can resist leather anything?} of this drew me in and all I can say is...well, I'm speechless.

This is officially my favorite of the textured polishes out right now because it is so rebellious and glam. The two coats needed are completely fast-drying, and leave just a subtle hint of shine behind {it is mostly matte}. I wore this for days without chips {despite the fact that I wasn't wearing top coat} and it looked gorgeous throughout. Also pertinent...this one was super easy to remove, and left behind no staining. If you haven't tried a textured polish but want to, this one comes highly, highly recommended.

For the record, the nails inc. Leather Effect Leather Polish creates more of a crackled leather effect, as opposed to a smooth leather {and that's totally fine with me}; and can also be purchased in the Bling It On Kit in Rebel if you want 3D Crystal Skull embellishments. If you're not a fan of black, you can also get this texture in Clerkenwell {Buff}, Old Crompton Street {Gray}, Ladbroke Grove {Pink Coral}, or Dalston {Pale Blue}.

choose your chic...

When it comes to choosing sunnies, for me it's a no-brainer. Designer {I will forever dig YSL and Oliver Peoples} and Oversized {perfect for concealing tired eyes lacking makeup}. Shopping for regular eyeglasses, on the other hand...epic. fail. I've yet to find a frame that suits my face {or style tastes}; so when I'm sans contacts I'm basically stumbling around {in heels!} relying on the shadowy outlines of people, places, and things to find my way. I feel a change coming on, however, since spotting these uber-chic Dolce & Gabbana styles.

Dolce & Gabbana DG3055B 520 in Tortoiseshell and Dolce & Gabbana DG3058B 692 in Apricot / Peach on top; Dolce & Gabbana DG3124 1723 in Dark Grey Pearled and Dolce & Gabbana DG3108 501 in Black on bottom.

The former are perfect for sophisticated tête-à-têtes when you want to project flirtiness laced with professionalism {very grown-up and office apropos}; the latter ideal for adding a youthful-meets-playful kick to everything from pencil skirts and pumps to skinny denim and hoodies. All of the above? Completely necessary additions to my barren eyeglasses collection. Now I just need to settle on a few new styles from YSL, and I'll be good. to. go.

Which form of chic do you prefer when it comes to eyeglasses - sophisti-chic or hipster-chic? Do tell!

through the looking glass...

Over the years the cocktail ring collection that I spent what felt like an eternity amassing has been replaced by a trio of dainty, delicate rings that seemingly never leave my fingers. Spotting the Glass Rings at TheJewelleryPeople.com, however, has reminded me just why I adored the oversized style so much to begin with - their ability to seamlessly transition from fashion statement to a piece of wearable art.

Pictured here is the {clockwise from top left} Multicolour Dichroic Glass & Silver Slim Lozenge Ring; Pink Rippled Dichroic Glass & Silver Lozenge Ring; Green Sparkle Dichroic Glow Glass & Silver Round Ring - 13mm; and Orange Rippled Dichroic Glass & Silver Ring. Just imagine how incredibly glam these would look paired with a killer mani or monochromatic ensemble {I'm thinking white or black}. Insanely chic, right?

The colors used are very Andy Warhol {love}; while the haphazard mix of hues reminds me a bit of a Jackson Pollock drip painting {again, love}. Most definitely wearable art. Who's crushing with me, babes?

Oh, and did I mention they're all ridiculously affordable? Prices range from $26.33 to $34.08. I think I need them all.

go luxe!

Though I love drugstore makeup brands {especially of the nail polish variety}; when it comes to certain items, like eyeshadow and the occasional lipstick, I tend to go for the pro {Urban Decay, NARS, Tmart professional makeup}, for the sheer fact that I love how long-lasting it is - as well as the luxe feel of the packaging.

Yes, when I shop for makeup {or Makeup Brushes}, the look of the packaging is just as appealing to me as the product itself. Case in point... the Pendant Style Moisture Lip Balm pictured above. How glam is that gilded casing? Definitely something I wouldn't mind pulling out of my handbag during date night or brunch with the besties. Just saying...

fall into chic with choies!

If my boot and sweater collection is any indication, fall is, without
question, my season obsession. I started browsing {and buying} autumn-apropos
at the beginning of July; and now I'm sharing 5 of my seasonal musts
{all from CHOIES} with you. Cross my heart they'll make. you. swoon.

{1} Leather Pointed High Heels A shoe / boot hybrid reminiscent of Alexander Wang. Pair them with pencil skirts in the office or slouchy boyfriend jeans for lazy weekend activities.

{2} Luxurious Lucid Aslant Bag in Red Transparent accessories are seriously on trend at the moment - and total conversation starters. Red trim, spiked detailing, and a chic chain shoulder strap make this one fresh and unique. {Also available in Beige and Blue}.

{3} Blue High-Waisted Flouncing Skater Skirt Top this with an oversized black knit and those fab Leather Pointed High Heels above for the perfect date night ensemble. {Also available in Green}.

{4} Golden Sequined Skirt One of my fall essentials...the sequined mini. Couple it with riding boots and a denim jacket for a kiss of daytime drama.

{5} Gray Sweatshirt with Colorful Tiger Pattern Inspired by the Kenzo Tiger Sweatshirt; this one looks just as fab styled with high-waisted pencil skirts as it does donned with denim! {Also available in Blue}

{fashion folio} boho chic

boho chic
James Perse Short Sleeve V Neck Tee in White + Marc by Marc Jacobs Too Hot to Handle Mini Drawstring Bag in Black + Avant Garde Paris Paco Necklace in Gold + Sole Society Leather Pyramid Stud Bracelet in Cream + Staring At Stars Scout Panama Hat in Black + Faith Connexion Printed Silk-Georgette Maxi Skirt + Shashi Aztec Ring in Gold + Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in Liar + Sam Edelman Maddox Wrap Strap Short Booties in Black

Boho. Chic. The former a blend of beatnik and rustic; the latter appearing more glamorous. Together, however, the two styles can be downright striking {as sammydress clothing proves with many of their chic ensembles}.

A sheer maxi in a noir hue is elegant and well-suited for an evening affair. Top it with a plain white tee {subtle slouch a must} and black wool panama hat to temper the dressy effect, and make it more daytime / street style-worthy. A lariat-inspired necklace lends a high-fashion-meets-country-western ambiance to the look; while a pyramid stud bracelet {worn on the forearm} and delicately cut gold ring add a smattering of understated bling. Black leather in the form of a petite drawstring bag and ankle booties is a sophisticated detail; followed up by the finishing touch...a rose colored lipstick to enhance your pout.

NOTD: Sally Hansen Sugar Coat in Cotton Candies

Two coats of Sally Hansen Sugar Coat Special Effect Textured Nail Color in Cotton Candies. Bright Pink.

I am always on the hunt for a pretty pink polish so the fact that Cotton Candies was a texture shade was just icing on the cake. I have only tried a few Textured Polishes so far, but this one remains one of my favorites because it is so fast-drying, long-lasting, and fun to look at.

On the nail, the Sugar Coat effect dries in a fashion reminiscent of wall spackle {and feels a bit like it too}. Application was, like with the Sally Hansen Fuzzy Coat in Peach Fuzz I swatched a couple of weeks ago, absolutely amazing. Two coats is all you need to reach full opacity; and top coat is not needed {I didn't use it for these swatches either}, as it will diminish the textured effect.

One thing to note is that textured manis seem to have a longer, chip-free lifespan than your standard glossy manicure. From my experience, they are more durable {especially if you do a lot of cooking or texting}. Just my two cents...

write about love

Dresses are, essentially, the last thing on my mind when I'm selecting my outfit du jour in the morning {Stats: 9 times out of 10 they take a backseat to my beloved skinny jeans}. But the Free People Write About Love Dress in Natural and Black is quickly making me rethink my style choices. The embroidered trim is perfectly vintage with a hint of gothic Victorian flair; while the babydoll aesthetic is a saucy throwback to the grunge movement of the 90s {especially if coupled with a pair of combat-esque boots}.

Not to be forgotten, of course, is the name of the dress itself, which reminds me of one of my all-time favorite quotes {author unknown} - "If a writer falls in love with you, you can never die." Ain't that the truth?

{what to wear} the college years

"You have four years to be irresponsible here. Relax. Work is for people with jobs. You'll never remember class time, but you'll remember time you wasted hanging out with your friends. So, stay out late. Go out on a Tuesday with your friends when you have a paper due Wednesday. Spend money you don't have. Drink 'til sunrise. The work never ends, but college does...”
Tom Petty

I am a college student myself; therefore I understand the urges you must be feeling – the ones that say it’s okay to drag yourself off to class in the same pair of ratty sweats you fell asleep in last night during a cram session. Do not succumb to such immoral thoughts; like the devil himself, they are leading you in the wrong direction – one that will leave you feeling unfashionable and downright icky for your entire college career.

One of the most important things about college is finally having the ability to define yourself, and let your true personality shine through; thus, abandoning all semblance of your individuality by adhering to the unofficial college dress code of bulky boots, velour tracksuits with vulgar words splashed across the…ahem, bum, and oversized sweatshirts embellished with the name of your alma mater is something that you must refrain from making. I am well-aware of your scant budget, your lack of sleep, and your party hardy ways; but all that aside, you can still be chic in college, it just takes a bit of extra effort to achieve true. college. class.

bomber jackets

{bombs away} One of the most amazing items you will ever add to your closet, I kid you not, is a bomber jacket; a heavenly slice of leather or faux leather that is an essential for the crisp fall weather. Not only does it keep you warm, but it is ideal for both layering, and ensuring that you look effortlessly put-together at all times. While black is a color I instantly turn to when investing in tees and dresses, in the case of bombers, I find that a piece in a rich toffee/caramel color {think VEDA's Max Convertible Leather Jacket in Desert} is much more wearable, for it can be paired with any shade in your wardrobe, and doesn’t give off the rough and tumble biker babe look that an ebony-hued bit instantly creates. One thing to remember is not to allow the fact that bomber jackets hit at the hip scare you off; let your long tees and cardigans to peek out from the hem, it only makes your look a bit more carefree and bohemian, and really, who doesn’t adore that!

{flat and fabulous} College campuses are like a small village; and your academic advisor? Let’s just say it is his or her mission to ensure that each one of your classes is far enough away from one another that you spend at least half – if not more – of your time trotting from one end of the quad to the other. The moral of this story? Wear flats.

Do not cave to the insecurities of your petite stature for you will only regret such a move come the end of the day when your feet are riddled with blisters and you can hardly hobble from your dorm room to the cafeteria, all thanks to your desire to teeter above your fellow undergrads. Save your stilettos for nights out with the girls, or special occasions; when on school grounds be flat and fabulous!

Two types of flats will get you through the school year – ballerinas and flat boots. Think of them as your new best friend, as they will see you through frenemies and flirting, successes and failures, and a handful of other milestones over the next four years. As such, choose wisely. I recommend staying in the neutral category when it comes to boots – cognacs, grays, dark browns, and blacks will match virtually everything in your closet and add an air of polish to your person. A top choice is the Steven by Steve Madden's 'Intyce' Boot. It's available in more colors than you can count, completely affordable, and holds up in all weather.

With ballerina flats, I say go wild! When not wearing boots you’ll most frequently find me in leopard print ballerinas - specifically, Target's Madge Flat in Leopard Print. Ballerinas give you the chance to have fun with color, so be ravishing in red; be glamorous in gold; sparkle in sequins; or channel your inner Audrey in raven {Sam Edelman's Felicia in Black Leather is perfect for the task}. Just this once allow your shoes to do both the walking, and the talking!

skinny jeans

{darling in denim} The desire to purchase any pair of jeans that looks good on you, regardless of the towering pile of denim stacked up in the corner of your dorm room may be almost too great to bear, but for both the sake of your wallet and your roommate’s sanity, please don’t. As long as you own at least three pairs of well-constructed jeans, then you’re in good shape.

I recommend having a trio of differentiating denim at all times – one dark wash, one medium wash, and one light wash {I'm personally obsessed with Free People's Ankle Skinny Jeans in Carrie Wash – all in the cut you favor. It may seem impossible, but you can easily survive on three good pairs of jeans – as long as there’s nothing noticeable about them, like studding or another type of embellishment. Remember, you’re going to be rotating these through your wardrobe a lot, so choose styles and washes that are unobtrusive and easily worn multiple times per week.

If you’re going to add a fourth pair of denim to your closet, let it be a pair of black ones. You have no idea how many times you’ll be expected to dress up completely out of the blue, and won’t feel like donning a dress or a pair of slacks. Black jeans look more polished and classy, and instantly make you appear as if you put a bit more effort into your look du jour. On that note, when you find a great pair of black jeans; scoop them up immediately – take it from a voice of experience, it’s nearly impossible to find ebony-hued denim that you truly adore nowadays!

“I learned three important things in college – to use a library, to memorize quickly and visually, to drop asleep at anytime given a horizontal surface and fifteen minutes.”
Agnes DeMille

{collar couture} While statement necklaces are a true love of mine, unless you’re on your way to a party, college campuses are not necessarily a choice location to don them; especially when it’s 8:00a.m., and your sparkly bauble is blinding your still half-asleep classmates. Forgoing a necklace, however, does not mean that you must sacrifice all traces of making a statement. A very versatile way to dress up a simple t-shirt, or add a splash of kitschy color to the day’s outfit can easily, and effortlessly, be accomplished with the assistance of a scarf. Scarves are ideal in the sense that they add a smattering of sophistication and mysteriousness to your style while remaining completely unfussy. Even better, you don’t have to know the secret to tying one; simply loop mark's Bold and Bright Scarf into a European knot or allow it to dangle carelessly in the breeze – either way looks divine.

{cardi crush} It’s true, you may have literally rolled out of bed five minutes ago, tossed on a cardigan, and teetered off to class; but no one has to know that for sure. Quite frankly, one of the biggest draws of the cardigan is that it provides a very European type of effortless beauty so eloquently put forth by the likes of Brigitte Bardot, which makes you come off as extremely blasé and been there done that courtesy of the rumpled yet refined savoir faire it instantly lends to any look you happen to be rocking – from skinnies to minis and everything in between.

Like the scarf, a cardigan holds the power to transform your look in mere moments, and will ultimately become a constant clothing companion year-round. Plus, they’re fairly inexpensive so you can indulge in a handful of them with little to no guilt. Last year I spent a total of $6 for two cardigans which I peruse on an almost daily basis. To this day, this satisfying samba with savings is the crowning moment of my personal shopping career. It is also proof that you don’t have to subsist solely on Ramen to look radiant.

Choose whatever color catches your eye when cardigan shopping – the only two hues I advise you to ensure you’re never without are gray and black. You would be surprised at how much use you will get out of a gray cardigan. Gray works with every color of the rainbow on so many levels, yet is both muted and magnificent, so you always look ravishing. Remember though, whether you’re wearing a cardigan that hits at the hip or droops to your knees, always size upthe cardigan serves as a lightweight jacket of sorts, so you want to make sure it can comfortably fit over whatever top you happen to be wearing. Forever 21's Classic Draped Front Cardigan and Classic Boyfriend Cardigan are fab examples of affordable cardis - both under $14.00, and so chic.

{a coat of many colors} Whether you’re attending school in a tropical climate or the forests of Alaska, a winter coat should always be lurking in the depths of your closet; perhaps behind all those cast-aside Homecoming dresses. Even if you never use it, such a garment is essential as it will give you peace of mind. Suppose a last minute opportunity to study abroad in London were to prevent itself? Why you’d already be prepared with a coat that would see you through the overcast semester!

Unlike an ordinary jacket, when it comes to finding the coat of your dreams, look for something crafted of wool, as it holds up well in any type of weather, and manages to keep you warm from the top of your head to the very tip of your toes. I prefer to stay in the neutral toned family when coat shopping, opting for pieces in black or dark colors {though the Jou Jou Studded Coat isn't bad either}. If you’d like to play Blair Waldorf and be bold with your color choice, however, offerings in pumpkin spice or cranberry are extremely eye-catching, and bound to leave an impression. And if you’re the girl who can’t quite decide, you can never go wrong with a pleasing plaid {or a Burberry Brit Balmoral Trench Coat}. Keep in mind that a coat is a definite investment piece – choose wisely now so there are no regrets later!

graphic tees

{tee time} Obviously a wardrobe is incomplete without a few t-shirts to choose from. I prefer sticking to the basics, such as simple v-necks and crewnecks like those available from Target. Typically they’re under $10 apiece, and if bought in a variety of colors they can easily see you through the entire year. They also look amazing for nights off campus if tucked into tulip or bandage skirts, and are extremely easy to accessorize, so you can make the look your own.

Vintage tees are also fun – like the ones displaying retro bands {Chaser's Judas Priest Tee is glam}, cartoon characters, or timeless movies across the front. When paired with skinny jeans and boots they manage to take on an air of chic sophistication, despite the fact that they have an element of grunge to the design.

If you truly feel the need to incorporate a few more tops into your college wardrobe, though you certainly don’t have to, those with a drapey style are an amazing choice as they appear slightly more dressy than the typical tee, and are just as comfortable as they are trendy.

{the sack} As children, going to the store each fall to select the backpack that would see us through countless milestones throughout the year was one of the highlights of our lives. We’d hem and haw over My Little Pony or Care Bears; haggle over colors; and even compare the benefits, or lack thereof, of owning a JanSport or a High Sierra. There’s no need to change tradition now that you’re in college; simply switch it up a bit. Ditch the backpack for a classier carryall; something that makes you feel elegant yet has the ability to hold all of life’s little necessities {I love the Ecote Double-Buckle Tote Bag}. Always look for something that is large enough for lugging your laptop to the library for late night study sessions, but comfortable enough to carry for countless hours each day – you’re too young to have back problems already!

{the mad hatter} I have faced the embarrassment of bad hair. I have fallen asleep at my desk while studying; my face nestled in the spine of my oversized textbook in the most unflattering of ways, only to awaken three hours later with five minutes to get to class, and my bangs the victim of the worst possible crease in history. This is bound to happen to you at least once {though probably dozens of times} during your college career. Do not spend those last five minutes attempting to tame your mane…it won’t work. Right now, a hat is your only savior.

Typically I am not the biggest advocate of any headwear aside from the occasional headband. In college, however, hats take on the role of best friend. They have the ability to make you look presentable even when you’re sporting the worst possible ‘do underneath; plus they add an adorable touch to your look – as long as you wear the right ones.

Leave all forms of baseball caps to boys – on them they can look cute; on females they can often look sloppy, and don’t usually pair well with our outfits. I recommend two different types of head accoutrement: newsboy caps and slouchy knit berets / beanies.

Newsboy caps have a very old-fashioned ambiance to them which is extremely elegant – it doesn’t hurt that they have a slight brim as well; perfect for covering those sleepy eyes on days when you simply can’t bring yourself to swipe on a few coats of mascara. Though my favorite in terms of headgear is the slouchy knit beanie {the Deena & Ozzy Super Slouchy Beanie is fab}, for the sheer fact that they can be worn year-round, and are, quite possibly, the simplest way to add a pop of color to your ensemble.

As a warning, remove hats of all kinds with caution. I suffer from hat hair myself; thus, when I put a hat on, I wear it all day – as in I don’t take it off until I’m in the privacy of my own home. If you have the same problem, search for a cute hat that you won’t mind wearing for long periods of time; that way you won’t have to worry about frightening anyone – namely a cute boy – with your atrocious hat hair.
