The Thinking Lingerie

It is not enough to effuse intelligence and sophistication solely through outward appearances. A true businesswoman can’t cut it in the boardroom via boxy blazers alone. She is unable to make professional strides relying merely upon harsh tailored pantsuits, or wrinkled, knee-length pencil skirts. No, the career woman lurking beneath our shy facades and shapeless office attire cannot truly blaze to life without a little incentive; a smidgen of seductiveness. It is not something that has to be seen on the outside, mind you; nor must it break the bank. The true way for us to make a change, to get things done, to better ourselves mentally, physically, and emotionally in our careers and our personal lives is by feeling…slightly saucy, perhaps; by knowing that we are sensual, captivating, flirtatious, provocative, fetching, passionate…even if it is underneath it all. Perchance the best way to accomplish all this and more is through Smart & Sexy. Be smart about your accessory purchases. Don't spend countless dollars to
come home with dissatisfaction. Buy for prices you can afford, only on
the internet. Find everything from custom pieces to loose diamonds.

Determined to bring affordable luxury to the budget conscious, Smart & Sexy stay true to their title by whipping up frou-frou confections that are both gorgeous to look at and comfortable to wear – that’s Smart – with the ability to give your confidence a boost – that’s Sexy.
To tell you the truth, my darlings, Smart & Sexy may have gone completely unnoticed by me if not for the fact that I spotted the marvelous ad campaign for the four collections – VIP, Lace Ambition, Executive, and Sexy Sets – all shot by the divine David LaChapelle. Each image embodies the true power of a woman when decked out in frilly underthings, while casting a covetous hue over the crème de la crème of each collection.

The French Maid inspired look of VIP sticks to an all black and white palette that harbors plunging necklines, body-hugging bustiers, sweetheart cuts, and underwires all gussied up with ruffled trim, lace bodices, and pint-sized bows.
Lace Ambition is a collection drenched in feminine colors that embrace all the fun of being a girl. Babydoll nighties created for sleepovers full of pillow fights and boy talk. Lacy chemises and slips with ruffled embellishments. Victorian influenced bras sporting sweetheart necklines.

Elegance is what the Executive collection is all about. Each piece remains smart and sophisticated in terms of cut, but flashes a peek-a-boo glance at a playful side through bright colors, and lace trim in identical shades. Tempting teddies, chic chemises, haute hipsters; there’s no denying that the Executive is a unit dripping with power.
No girl should have to suffer through days of mismatched, seen-better-days lingerie; or so that’s what the Sexy Sets believe. Made for everyday wear in mind, the Sexy Sets are full of brightly colored beauties made of high-shine satin that makes you feel smart and sophisticated even when you’re wearing a pair of ratty sweats.

Think about it, ladies…which collection makes you weak in the knees?

Fashionably yours!

One Language Label's Universal Message

Eco-friendly, green, canvas…these phrases are being tossed about so haphazardly nowadays that you often simply look the other way, and pay no mind when you hear such words spill from someone’s lips. The casual totes thought up by Lillian and Anais Yim, the sister design duo behind One Language Label, however, have brought a new type of clean, ethereal, tres chic effervescence to the terms by adding trendy touches to the oftentimes boring natural canvas tote.

Wanting to merge fashion-centric fabulousness with savvy social consciousness, the sibling team got to work with creating a small, modest line of structured totes emblazoned with four unique designs (two new designs will debut right here on Café Fashionista later on in this post) that bridged the gap between style and smarts. The end result? One Language Label.

The two of you are sisters based in New York City – one having attended Cornell and the other having attended Parsons…you have very strong backgrounds, yet you seem intent on remaining anonymous to your audience. Why?
Lillian: It's not so much that we want to remain anonymous to our audience; but we want all of the attention and focus on our bags and for the bags to speak for themselves.

When/how did you start the One Language line?
L: We first came up with the idea about 2 years ago when the whole eco-friendly concept was just starting to get really big, and we were seeing all these canvas bags on everyone; but they were either really generic, granola looking, or super flimsy. We were also going through a point in our lives where we wanted to do good things for the Earth, to contribute somehow, but in a way that was modern, yet subtle, and most of all fashionable. We wanted to do/create something that made sense (not a trend that would come and go); something we could really feel good about.

We always knew we would be doing something on our own, and it all just came together. Once it hit us that we wanted to create a small line of canvas bags that would be different from anything out there currently in the market, you couldn't stop us. It’s not to say that it wasn't hard. We were sketching until our hands went numb, looking at all different silhouettes for the perfect shape, creating inspiration boards just to tear them down because we had become inspired by something else the next minute. But we love every part, every minute of immersing ourselves completely into the bags, into One Language, or else we would have never started it.

Why One Language…what does this title represent for your business?
L: Love is the universal language, the one language that everyone knows. It's about loving yourself and everything around you. One Language stands for doing good things for yourself (hence the inspirational quotes) and the earth, but with style. It's a language we can all speak. We thought it was perfect for what we wanted to create!

What type of background/upbringing did you have to get you interested in fashion and design?
L: As strange as it may sound, I think our parents had a great deal to do with it. They always encouraged us to be creative and gave us the freedom to explore any type of fashion interest we had when we were younger. Whether it was wearing my sequin tap shoes every day for a month, dyeing my hair bright red, or wanting to wear anything with oversized bows, they never criticized or restricted me from doing it. And I think that's where I get my confidence to take risks with what I wear, because for me, that's what fashion is all about.

What’s on your wish list right now?
L: Anything Balmain, leather leggings from The Row, and a Givenchy Nightingale bag.
Anais: Studded Lambskin 3.1 Phillip Lim bag and some Nicholas Kirkwood shoes.

Can you describe the ultimate One Language buyer? What type of person do your designs cater to?
L: We want to cater to those who don't want to have to sacrifice their entire outfit because they want to carry around a canvas bag, because that's how we felt before we started One Language.

She's everyone from the fashion fierce girl running around town to the beach loving Hampton-ite who wants something functional, sustainable, yet stylish that will fit her lifestyle without ruining her style. Our buyers are always looking for something fresh and chic, but like to keep it simple.

What do you love to read?
L: Love, love, LOVE Elizabeth Gilbert's Eat, Pray, Love! I die for my dose of French Vogue.
A: I always love books by Mitch Albom. For magazines I like V Magazine, Harper's Bazaar, Nylon, and Interview. I also like looking at indie fashion magazines online.

Each bag’s lining is adorned with handwritten quotations that the two of you were inspired by during the creation process. Where do these quotes come from?
L: We have a whole journal just full of inspirational quotes we've collected over the years. We love being inspired by everything and everyone around us. It's amazing how the simplest sentences can move and inspire you to follow your dreams in the biggest way. They come from all over the place; random sayings we heard out on a night in the city, to things we've read by Ghandi. One of our favorites is by Ghandi: "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." We also love “What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?” – Unknown.

Are all decisions made for One Language Label as a team, or does each of you focus on one aspect of the business?
L: We definitely make all the final decisions as a team but Anais is more in charge of the design/visual aspect of the brand, coming from a design background, and I pretty much handle all the business side of things, coming more from a business/fashion background.

What is your go to accessory?
L: SHOES! No matter how bad a day you're having, you throw on a F-I-E-R-C-E pair of Louboutins or Balenciagas and suddenly you feel like you can take on the world! (Or at least I do).
A: I think we can all agree on shoes; but I kind of have a thing for scarves as well.....

What inspires/influences what you create for the One Language line?
L: Our everyday life inspires us, as well as the city of New York. You see and hear so much here on this tiny island; you feel like you're in the center of it all. Other designers in the fashion/art world influence us as well, of course; their stories and designs make us want to work and create something equally as beautiful and inspiring. We really try to absorb as much as we can from what we read, see, and hear, and try to incorporate it into our line. We love all the small indie designers we come across on blogs…you feel like you’ve just discovered something amazing before anyone else has.

Favorite places to shop?
L: Barneys, Zara, Topshop, Whole Foods....

How do you unwind? What are your hobbies? What do you do in your downtime?
L: Finding downtime is hard but whenever I can, I love to s-l-e-e-p.
A: Walking around the Chelsea galleries.

What’s a typical day like for you?
L: Reach for the BlackBerry before I even get out of bed for any international orders that might have come through, catch up on more emails, send out orders and sketch up new designs and silhouettes for the collection. We're also constantly searching for cool blogs (like yours) to reach out to since that's where our biggest support has come from.
A: Design. Design. Design.

At the moment there are only four bag designs to choose from…do you hope to add more to your collection? Do you have aspirations to branch out into different fashion directions?
L: We started this for the sole intent of creating interesting and inspiring canvas bags that make you rethink what sustainable means. This is our love and this is what we believe in. We are definitely in the works of more shapes and designs for the brand, some really cool concepts we're excited for everyone to see. Never say never, but for now we are just focusing on designing great canvas bags.

If you could create one item, what would it be and why?
L: I honestly have no idea…
A: A DSLR camera that you can slip in your back pocket. I love the quality of the cameras, but am not a fan of the heavy/bulky size. It starts to be a pain to carry around everywhere.

What is the mission of the One Language line?
L: The mission is to take the concept of canvas bags out of the box and surprise people with the details and design elements we put into it. For us, its all about the details, from the handwritten quotes printed on the inside of each bag, down to the packaging (for those who have ordered from us, they know what we're talking about!). We're constantly exploring what we can do with the canvas material and all the textures and shapes it can take. From what you were seeing before, you would think a canvas bag could only take this one shape and could only be this flimsy, non-structural, schlep-y bag!

Any advice for girls who love fashion/design?
L: Stay true to what you love and who you are. In this world where the line between fantasy and reality can sometimes get blurred (believing that you really NEED that $5000 bag), it’s important to not get caught up with the hype of this 'glamorous' fashion world. If you're going to design, design for yourself first, because you know you're going to love doing it. Over and over we find that success = loving what you do and believing in it!

Since their debut, One Language Label has had only four designs – The Haute Bag, The Bicycle Bag, The Necklace Bag, and The Simple Luxuries Bag. Now two new patterns have joined the mix – The Banana Bag and The Text Bag (both pictured above).

Whimsically designed and ideal for storing crusty French baguettes on your way to a romantic picnic in the park for two, or simply toting your can’t-live-without belongings from here to there, One Language Label’s creations are the piece de resistance of casual canvas tote bags that add a high fashion kick even to a pair of lived-in sweats. Want one? Special order your very own, one-of-a-kind, One Language Label original by sending a message to lyim@onelanguagelabel.com.

Dog Days of Dylan

The hunt is on for the perfect fall handbag, my darlings! The gates are open. The starting pistol has been fired. And there I am, teetering out the door in wedges that I can’t walk in, but are simply too cute to resist. But no, I’m not even out of the building yet and something has already inadvertently caught my eye. It fulfills all of the stipulations I have particularized in my mind, right down to the lush buttery color and subtle studding. And, naturally, to add insult to injury, it has received Rachel Zoe’s seal of approval. The inquisition has not even truly started, and already it has come to an abrupt, yet blissful halt in the form of Linea Pelle’s Dylan Medium Tote.

The fallen autumn leaves, as magnificent a sight as they may be, stand no chance of outshining the supple, brilliantly titled Scotch Italian leather. The scintillating orange pumpkins sitting primly atop golden hay-covered patches pack no punch in comparison to the animalistic zebra print fabric lining, or gold-tone hardware that adds a thrilling thunder to the tawny temptress. No, all of the glorious sights of fall, quite frankly, fall flat when viewed in quick succession with Linea Pelle’s pretty.

Slightly smaller than its palatial predecessor, the Dylan Zip Tote; the more minute Dylan Medium Tote steals the spotlight courtesy of three individualistic attributes:

A removable cross-body strap that makes transforming from a satchel, to a shoulder bag, to a messenger an absolute cakewalk.

Gold-tone studding along the edges parallel to those seen on the Fall 2009 runway in the form of Chanel, Marc Jacobs, and Miu Miu.

A foldover, 9” double handle strap drop that flops about in the most celestial, boho chic way when not in use.

Please don’t get me wrong here, I’m hands-down devoted to my Balenciaga-inspired Jocelyn Satchel; yet even I can admit that the Dylan Medium Tote is exactly what the doctor ordered.

La Bilateral Boot

I’m frightened, mes amis. Of a fashion trend, no less. Oh, I want nothing more than to snuggle with the season’s adoration of over-the-knee boots. To take in arms the legging-like fit. To bear hug the lovesome lycra, the soft suede, the luscious leather. But the mere contemplation of doing so sends me into a complete and utter tailspin. I am not of the over-the-knee wearing kind. I am sweet but incredibly short. Sassy but quite shy. Sociable yet outright serene. Over-the-knee boots were not created for someone of my stature, of my personality, in mind. They were constructed out of thoughts of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, leggy Rodarte models on the runway, statuesque editorial assistants at fashion magazines. Even so, I find myself with nothing but over-the-knee boots on both the tip of my tongue and within the confines of my mind.

I know I can’t. It would be a gaffe, a snafu, a sheer faux pas on my part to buy a pair. To shell out hard-earned cash on a piece of footwear that is here today, gone tomorrow. A brogan that I may or may not deem daring enough to wear come tomorrow. So I won’t. Don’t worry, lovelies, I won’t do it. Instead, I’ll invest in the Convertible Over The Knee Boot.

Save your gasps of shock and horror for another time. I’m not reneging on my promise, I’m simply compromising. To put it candidly, Free People’s Convertible Over The Knee Boot is predestined to be the fall fashion favorite of the petite, pint-sized fashionista burdened with complete confusion, and the never-ending question of whether or not she can wholeheartedly propel herself into the trend without feeling self-conscious and insecure. Why? Darlings, do you even have to ask? It’s quite obvious; the Convertible Over The Knee Boot is…bilateral.

You may feel bold, dauntless, sanguine, fearless, even valiant about wearing over-the-knee boots today, but tomorrow those emotions may drain from your form completely. And when they do, the Convertible Over The Knee Boot will remain a fundamental fragment of your shoe collection, as the brushed lycra can simply be cuffed or scrunched down to create a surrogate style more fitting with your mood du jour.

This is not a quip. I am not jesting you here. This is a direct order. Buy them now – they are sure to save your sanity later.

Fashionably yours!

Sock It to Me

I've been selfish, kittens; so very, very selfish. All this time I have thought of nothing but clothing myself, and ensuring that I was warm when the weather turned brisk; but I was neglecting someone, something, very close to me. My wee iPod, an electronic that is more akin to a lifelong best friend than a mere technological invention, has endured bumps and bruises, scrapes and scuffles, even stomps and sideswipes. But, above all, my teeny music mogul has had to brave countless harsh winters with nary a blanket to keep her warm or stylish. In this fashion, as an early gift to commemorate our many years together, I have decided to bestow my tiny trinket with...iPod Socks.

I already know what you’re thinking. The wheels are churning in that pretty little head of yours, commenting on the ridiculousness of this item; but I must defend myself here, and point out that this is anything but a frivolous purchase, mind you. This is a necessity of utmost importance. You are not simply clothing your iPod by slipping her into a pair of vibrantly colored socks; but ensuring her safety as the material acts as a buffer, a guardian angel, of sorts, from the cruel and dangerous outside world.

Guilelessly slide your petite photoelectronic device into the knit sock for safe-keeping, the same way you would glide your own meticulously manicured foot into a pair of Wolford tights. When a playlist change is called for, or a docking is required, easily pop her out of her cushy humble abode, and work your way through the task at hand before returning her to her chichi crash pad. Oui, the iPod Socks are to your mini mechanism what the high-rise Park Avenue penthouse I aspire to someday reside in is to me – a swank shelter not for the feint of heart.

But I digress, I suppose I should drop the theatrics – or at least tone it down. Don’t be fooled, your iPod isn’t the only one who will benefit from this accessory – you will too. Yes, to be completely honest, I’m guilty of another count of selfishness. I assume that it’s time to divulge the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. My little iPod is with me 24/7…and she sticks out like a sore thumb. Thus, by investing in Apple’s iPod Socks, I’ll be ensuring a constant color-coordinated companion, as a single set lodges six socks in the requisite shades needed to spice up any ensemble – gray, blue, pink, orange, green, and purple.

Forgive me, darlings, no harm was meant from my amore propre; just a desire to add a creative, colorful, cozy kick to my adored accessory. To be truthful, who knew you could have so much fashion fun at the Apple store? Now go ahead…sock it to your iPod!

Fashionably yours!

Destruction Zone

Put away that tacky, day-glo orange hardhat, kittens. This isn’t a construction site. You will find no sweaty, catcalling handymen here. No, we are not building anew; simply destroying what has already been created. Gone are the days when you would mourn the discoloration about the knee of your dark wash, or shed tears over a slight tear in the shin of your black beauties. It is time to embrace imperfections. To smile in the face of stains. To beam upon blemishes. To fleer upon flaws. To decry defects. Hold on tight, darlings, you are now entering the destruction zone.

JET Jeans “Thrashed Skinny Jeans” With the many tears and frayed edges that are so synonymous with destroyed jeans, it’s hard to steer clear of grunge territory when donning them. This is not something to worry about when wearing JET Jeans’ Thrashed Skinny Jeans. Designer John Eshaya has managed to bridge the gap between glamour and grunge with the Thrashed Skinny, which keeps the eloquently destroyed denim looking polished and posh whether paired with combats or ballerinas. The dark clean? Divine. The white? Wondrous. The gray? Gorgeous. No matter what color finds itself in your closet it’s a style that keeps on giving.

Forever 21 “Holly Frayed Skinny Jean” I know only too well that when you’re at the beginning stages of traversing the destroyed jean look it can be frightening to go too far too soon. You don’t want a completely shredded style, yet you want enough destruction to satisfy your need for rebelliousness. The Holly Frayed Skinny Jean is ideal for three very important reasons:

Fraying along the upper thighs keeps the destroyed look more subdued than straight-out cuts.

The one slash about the leg decorating these denim washed delights gives your knee the chance to poke through, and play a game of peek-a-boo with your many admirers without showing too much skin.

They’re tres affordable; so you can try out the style (which I know you’ll love) without going broke.

Silence & Noise “Ripped Twig Jean” Don’t even try to deny it, dearest; you know you’ve seen them. The girls who traipse around town in jeans that look straight off the runway, with perfectly placed rips and tears that seem impossible to achieve even for the best DIY-er. But they’re not. Impossible to achieve, that is. For Silence & Noise has achieved such a feat via the Ripped Twig Jean. A sophisticated black look is taken down a notch through an assortment of destruction about the leg and thigh that make them appear lived-in and brand new all at the same time. A tapered leg, some spandex to help you move and groove, perhaps a blazer paired with pumps…voila! Shredded perfection.

Divine Rights of Denim “Lust Skinny Jean” Haven’t you heard my pretties? Gray is the new neutral. It’s the new black. It’s the new white. Okay, so maybe it isn’t; but in the world of Café Fashionista, it most certainly is. Thus, Divine Rights of Denim’s Lust Skinny Jean in Pluto Rinse (an obvious intergalactic connotation tossed into the mix because the hue is out of this world), is a must-own for the denim-loving diva looking for a way to mix up her jeans collection. Whiskering on the thighs. Faded gray throughout the leg. Light distressing found both in front and back. Folded over back pockets for a chic, unique look. I’m sure you’re already aware; but yes, I’m lusting over them.

Current/Elliott “The Skinny Jeans” I suppose I should simply come clean. I’m a dreamer to the core. A person who can feel content simply by lying on a picnic blanket upon fresh cut grass, gazing up at the clouds, and imagining them taking on all sorts of splendrous shapes and designs. With the Current/Elliott Skinny Jeans, however, no picnic blanket is required, as the dreamlike clouds are swathing my legs, amidst a pretty, acid wash-inspired bleached denim that morphs from blue to white and back again in a haphazard design, only made more lovely with lacerated embellishments found upon the upper thighs and knees. Worn with a slouchy white v-neck boyfriend tee and a scarf in a punchy color…it’s a low-key style with a high-maintenance twist that is utterly undeniable.

To destroy, or not to destroy? Oui, that is my question to all of you!

Fashionably yours!

Smitten Saturday

A Tisket, A Tasket, A Darling Little Basket How on earth the summer has managed to almost completely pass me by without even a mere stop at the beach to hunt for seashells along the shore; a jaunt – if only a brief one – to a quaint bed and breakfast; or an expeditious shopping spree at a newly-discovered mall. But here we are, in the throes of August, the air sultry and sticky about us, the fireflies emitting the last bit of their ethereal light, and the ripples in the lake growing still as everyone returns to the stringent schedules put forth by work and school. It is this time of year exactly, just as the summer is coming to an end, and right before the hustle and bustle of the holidays begin, when I think of bike rides. That’s right…bike rides. They seem so fitting for a farewell to the warmer months, and a friendly welcome to the fall and winter. But no bike ride is complete without a little wicker basket to place freshly-picked wildflowers, friendly puppies, and love letters from secret admirers. Currently on my radar? The European Market Basket from Cynthia’s Twigs; the Bicycle Basket from Nantucket Gift Company; and the Cisco Handlebar Basket – Classic from Nantucket Bike Basket Company. A tisket, a tasket, when will I get a darling little basket?

Matte About You Blame it on all those Knott’s Landing reruns I watched as a child; but when it comes to lips, I’m all about a high-shine, glossy wet look. When it comes to nails, however, I find myself lusting over a flat color that adds a chalky, rebellious edge to my polished style. Now, let it be known that, up until this very moment I have worn only glossy nail colors, but mattes are sending shivers up my spine, leading me to believe that they are a part of my future. First, I will have a little fun with KnockOut Cosmetics’ Concrete. Next I will take OPI’s Russian Navy for a spin. And to complete my foray into the world of mattes, I will peruse Zoya’s Dovima to bring out the vampy vixen within. Let it be known…I’m matte about you!

Stick It to the Man I’m really quite embarrassed to admit this, but I had a little situation at a Japanese restaurant a few short weeks ago that is still reverberating in my mind. It involved chopsticks, and my lack of skill in using them. One thing led to another, and I practically had to use my hands to eat the California Rolls I had ordered. The humiliation was so great that I have decided to prevent such shame from ever attacking me again; thus, I am investing in a pair of chopsticks that I can practice with at home. Of course, you know me…a splintered wooden pair simply won’t do; I have my eyes on a fashionable set that will surely prompt me to learn the tricks of the chopstick-using trade. My favorites? The feline embellished Maneki Neko Chopsticks; the feminine Cherry Blossom Chopsticks; the lipstick red Geisha Chopsticks; and the sleek Black with Silver Rabbit and Moon Chopsticks. With a little bit of discipline and drills perhaps I will soon be able to stick it to the man like a pro!
One Shoulder Love I won’t write it off as an ephemeral obsession of mine; or chalk it up to a flitting trend I’ve decided to track that is here today, gone tomorrow. This isn’t a monetary like, but a true adoration for something that will reside in my wardrobe long after the rest of the world has cast it aside. The one shouldered look. So much more seductive than a lot of leg; quite a bit more demure than the typical low-cut eyeful of décolletage; a one-shouldered style is smoldering and sassy while retaining polished class and savoir faire; which is why my closet simply must be mottled with pieces that fit the alluring criteria. The cleverly-crafted Free People Drapey One Shoulder Top in Snow is the quintessential way to keep all eyes on you. LnA’s One Shoulder Dress in Crimson is the quintessential going-out frock that will have cute boys sending drink after drink to your candlelit corner table. Juicy Couture’s One-Shoulder Dress with its horizontal blue and white Bar Harbor stripes and rope-like tie-waist is a casual slip-on which simply screams for a posh Nantucket country club surrounding. And there’s no question in my mind that the Pencey One Shoulder Tee paired with a boyish straw fedora is a prerequisite for a day of fun in the sun. Go ahead, feel the wind on your shoulder, darlings!

Mark My Words Today I’m bohemian. Yesterday I was trendy. Tomorrow I’ll be rebellious. I have no one style. I go wherever my mood takes me, as does my wardrobe. In the morning I’m a fierce fashionista. In the afternoon I’m a Grecian goddess. In the evening I’m an old-fashioned screen siren. For so many varied personalities and ideations when it comes to outfitting my form, it’s nearly impossible to pinpoint one line of accessories that can jump from one dressiness to another while still making a statement. The Marquis & Camus Collection by Sarah Kang can. During my damsel in distress days I turn to the Victorian Romance Collection. My movie star moments are flecked with pieces from the Red Carpet Collection. My old-fashioned revolutionist is adorned with the Victorian Rebel Collection. The Lt. Camus Collection comes about during my combative phases. Modern Rebel is synonymous with my flashes of all-black ensembles and teased hair. And there’s no mistaking my happy-go-lucky instances, for it’s always dusted with pieces from the Joker Collection. There’s a Marquis & Camus piece for every mood or style…mark my words.

Stoop Sale I’m not a garage sale kind of girl. I’m much more in my comfort zone when skimming the racks at Forever 21 or the elusive Bloomingdale’s than when I’m on my hands and knees digging through a pile of someone else’s tainted goods. Regardless, I’ve found myself infatuated with a sale of a different type…stoops. Not to be confused with East Hampton’s pristine Scoop NYC; a Stoop Sale is the city girls answer to the quite common suburbanite garage sales that seemingly pop up each and every weekend. I’m not making this up either. I read all about them in New York magazine (be still my heart) in a piece by Sam Jewler entitled Put Your Stoop to Work, which has left me obsessed. There’s something so much more…exclusive; aristocratic; upper crust, about a Stoop Sale. Perhaps it’s simply the atmosphere, or the way the words Stoop Sale roll off the tongue and lead you to believe that you’re being invited into a chosen clan of sorts, but the idea has become emblazoned in my mind. Oh, how I long to attend one!

What were you smitten with this week?

Fashionably yours!

By the Sea, By the Sea

An outdoors type, a wilderness lover…I fit neither mold. I am a girly girl through and through. Don’t get me wrong, I embrace a nice plaid flannel style every now and then, or admire a knee-high pair of wellies from time to time, but these infatuations are not brought on by a desire to tread the fine line between the wasteland and civilization. They are merely a homage to current fashion trends that have piqued my interest. Regardless of this fact, even I have a savage side. A primeval craving to do something wildly out of the ordinary – at least for me. What is it you ask? Oh, it’s too absurd for words. A fantasy that will surely never harbor any reality. But, if you must know, I’ll tell you. I dream of spending an entire weekend seaside. Not in a quaint beachhouse, or being rocked to sleep atop a houseboat, mind you; simply to spend an entire weekend slumbering upon the shore, the waves crashing in the background.

It’s a ridiculous thought, really. I, a person who cannot so much as swim. I, a person who can’t stand the feeling of sand between my toes. I, a person who finds it infuriating when the wind whips my hair about my face, creating a tangled mess that takes hours to comb out. But it’s true; that is my fool’s paradise. It is not, however, a hallucination dreamt up by me and me alone. No, it was my discovery of the Nautical Lantern that imbued my brain with such ideations.

Lanterns have always struck a chord deep within my soul; and with nothing more than a minor glance upon the stainless steel dressed up in red paint and plainly calling out to be filled with a lit tealight, I was overcome with a longing to tote it along to the place it was crafted after – the ocean.

Designed to look and act quite like the oil-burning lanterns used many years ago on ships, the Nautical Lantern is a modern piece of history with the power to brighten up the atmosphere anytime or anyplace. A bonfire with a cute boy on the beach is made more picturesque with the Nautical Lantern to light the way. A backyard barbeque looks more fanciful when modeling a tabletop decorated with unlit Nautical Lanterns. An afternoon picnic by the waterfront creates a subdued, romantic ambience when brightened by a combination of Nautical Lanterns and a frisson of passion between two lovebirds.

I may not be able to rub two sticks together to start a fire; or figure out whether I’m heading North, South, East, or West at any given moment. But as long as the Nautical Lantern is guiding my way…well darlings, nothing else really matters!

Around the World in 80 Days

Oh, mes amours, it has taken some time, but I am finally coming to terms with the fact that no, I will not be going anywhere fabulous for the summer. My travel plans will be made up of awaking in my stuffy bedroom and moving quickly to the crowded living room where I will study for the CLEP College Algebra Exam; work on various articles; and blog. The usual, of course. Thus, since I will not be traveling to any exotic locales, I have decided to invest in tiny trinkets that will make me feel as if I’m seeing the world in 80 days. How, precisely, will I go about doing this, you ask? Easy. Via the delicate, antique-inspired Destination Charm Necklaces from the fashionably fabulous Urban Outfitters.

Twenty-inch chain necklaces made of brass, tin casting, and nickel; sporting lobster clasps, and a small mix of charms inspired by the destination in question – Paris, Venice, London, Amsterdam, Tokyo, and California, the Destination Charm Necklaces are an affordable way to feed the world traveler burning within; while adding a subtle blast of sparkle to your throat.

Paris Lovelies, I will tell you the truth right now…though I have never been to Paris physically, through the amount of research and reading I have completed about the la ville de lumière, mentally, I have been there hundreds, possibly thousands of times. I’ve strolled through the Menagerie at the Jardin des Plantes; bought fresh flowers, fruits, and vegetables at the Marche Aligre; danced the night away at Le Batofar; and sipped coffee at Jardin de L’Internet. Four charms dangle from the Paris Destination Charm Necklace – the Eiffel Tower, a French token, a fleur de lis, and a piece of brass with a beautiful inscription – la bonne vie. Oui, it truly is the good life.

Amsterdam Aside from a brief obsession with clogs back in the second grade, and poring over a book about how the Dutch celebrate holidays in the fifth, I know little to nothing about Amsterdam. The four quaint little charms found on the Destination Amsterdam Necklace make me desperate to learn more. The tulip emblazoned token makes me long for a day of sightseeing along the Jordaan, an entire neighborhood devoted solely to plants and flowers. The whimsical windmill has me ready to embark on a tour of all eight of Amsterdam ’s windmills – from the De Otter to the De 1200 Roe – and everything in between. The chic clog brings to mind the countless hours I could spend shopping upon De Negen Straatjes. And the kissing boy and girl? An obvious indication that romance is sure to be found while dining at Bakkerswinkel or listening to live music at Bitterzoet.

Venice The first week of August marks the date when a friend of mine will depart for Umbria, a quaint little region of central Italy where she will spend two weeks vacationing in a villa fit for a queen. To the West is Tuscany , a location known for its tempting food and wine. To the East is Marche, aptly nicknamed “the new Tuscany.” To the South is Lazio, the region of Rome best known for its many parks and lakes. On a daily basis, she will indulge in many of the things played out in the four Venice charms – shopping, a la the boot-shaped charm which represents the la vita italiana; a gondola with a little gondolier to row her and a beau about St. Mark’s on a romantic, moonlit night; a pretty poppy representative of jaunts about Giardinetti Reali; and a single scripted word – amore. Sì, you simply can’t help but love la bella vita italiana.

London I won’t place blame regarding my love of London on the temptations of Harrods, or Selfridges. I won’t point fingers at the late ethereal Princess Di, or a slight crush on the rosy-cheeked Prince Harry. No, my true passion for the British speaking country lies in literature. In the romantic tales written by the hand of Jane Austen, in the kitschy stories told by the sassy Sophie Kinsella. Through their words I have piddled around Picadilly Circus; stood about Buckingham Palace waiting for the Changing of the Guards to take place; spun around on the London Eye for hours upon hours, as I observe the entire city; spent quiet afternoons in Kent; indulged in noisy evenings at Mahiki. The Destination London Necklace captures all this and so much more – the Queen’s Guard; the detailed rose; the tea pot and saucer; Big Ben…these four charms manage to bring the essentials of London ’s loveliness to life.

California Though my original birthplace is New York City, I have called California my home for quite some time; thus, I feel as if I know it like the back of my hand, and love the tiny tribute to the sunshine state that I can wear about my neck. Unlike the others in the collection, California bears only three charms; though these charms are completely representative of the things California is known for. A heart to recognize the hippie movement that took place in the 60s within the small town of Berkeley , which held fast to the belief of free love; a palm tree to salute the type of no-frills flora that seemingly dots every street corner; and a cutout of California itself to honor the much-loved territory.

Tokyo February 2007. Now and Zen written by Linda Gerber. My infatuation with Tokyo , Japan started during this time. I fell in love with the Imperial Palace East Gardens , shopping in Takeshita-dori and Omotesando, and dining at the bohemian inspired Café Ano. Cherry blossoms became my favorite flower; anime a passion. As such, a part of me is convinced that the Destination Tokyo Necklace was crafted with me in mind. A colored cherry blossom; a lone tatami zori sandal; a flirty Akogeomi; the 5 Tier Pagoda…they are the heart and soul of the exotic district, and bring Tokyo ’s true essence to the forefront.

Where does your dream destination lead you?

Shake It Up

Leisure time? Please, darlings, I’m lucky I have a spare moment for those two simple words to tumble out of my matte red lips let alone to actually act upon them. With a harried schedule like mine leisure time is a foreign concept. I skedaddle from class to work in chic cognac riding boots; drag myself from the grocery store to the Laundromat in perky pewter ballerina flats; then teeter to the gym for a brief dance instruction, and off for a night on the town in stylish, sky-high stilettos. Luckily for the former, no outfit changes are required; but the latter is a whole other story. I can’t possibly don the same ensemble out for a night of clubbing that I do for an afternoon of sweat-inducing dance. Oh, but I can, precious, I most certainly can.

The Shake-It-Up Dance Top tells me to “Just do it!” – Nike coupons – and you know me, always (okay, sometimes) willing to listen to the voice of reason, have come to the very mature conclusion that obeying the command will serve to alleviate my constantly stressed out situation.

Woven out of a combination of satin and Nike’s trademark Dri-Fit jersey materials, the Shake-It-Up Dance Top keeps you comfortable when working out; yet remains stylish enough to traverse from fitness attire to fashionably fabulous fun wear that will make you stand out at the dinner table, or in a club full of wild and crazy party animals. Part halter, part tank; the adjustable ties at the front cinch to form a ravishing ruching about the neckline that swiftly ends in a pretty bow about the bust; while the ties in the back draw attention to your neck and svelte shoulders.

Don’t you see what this means, dearests? No more scrounging for the perfect top to toss on after a day of working out; simply slip off your sweatpants, slither into a pair of black skinnies, and let the drapey, tunic-like Shake-It-Up Dance Top do the rest!

Fashionably yours!

Your Name Here

Oh, mes animaux favoris, I have never been one for goodbyes – whether for a weeklong getaway to the country, a summer spent backpacking abroad, or a few nights slumbering under an unfamiliar roof. They trigger unhealthy amounts of tears; allow me to feel lost, alone, and sorrowful; and leave me searching for a security blanket of sorts, something that will comfort me, and bring to mind memories of wondrous times, as opposed to tragic farewells. The Juicy Couture Yearbook Tote is capable of doing just that.

Toss out those autograph books; forget about wasting money on plain white tees; the best way to keep your friends close to your heart is by allowing them to display their creative sides on a tote that can accompany you here, there, and everywhere.

The cotton, cream-colored backdrop aptly titled Angel is the perfect place to allow your pals to scrawl their sentiments – fun or flirty, who really cares – while the size of the bag, which sports expandable side gussets with snaps provides just enough room for you to comfortably lug all of the usual necessities about.

Inside? Hot pink lining with angel-colored words proclaiming Juicy Couture in a sassy script, in addition to cell and zip pockets. Outside? A front-pocket adorned with a colorful collegiate crest proudly displaying two Scottie dogs, and the year 2009. Hidden within this petit pocket? Eight permanent markers in varying shades – gold, bronze, pink, turquoise, blue, black, purple, and silver. A luxury that makes it simple for people to put pen to paper – pardon me, pen to purse.

Not to be forgotten, of course, is the treasure emblazoned about the back – the John Hancock of Gela Nash-Taylor and Pamela Skaist-Levy, the founders of JC.

Ignore – if only temporarily – the preppy monogrammed totes you so often find yourself fawning over; the Juicy Couture Yearbook Tote is an updated version of the aforementioned, synonymous with a scrapbook that doubles as a functional fashion accessory.

Tell me, lambs…what messages will your friends leave for you?

A Lesson in Corsetry

It is bad enough that we must hide adorable ruffled bra and underwear sets beneath our clothing; but why on earth should corsets suffer the same fate? Why must we conceal all the lace and ribbons; bows and satin; zippers and pleats under tees that aren’t nearly as flattering, or as elegant as a good old-fashioned corset? Now, I’m not talking about the girdle-like, breath stealing garments like the one that almost did poor Elizabeth Bennett in at the beginning of Pirates of the Caribbean, mind you; nor am I discussing the pieces complained about by damsels in distress within Victorian novels. No, the topic at hand lies within the more modern, updated corsets that provide a delicate charm and grandeur to simple blue jeans; a polished sophistication to a leather mini; refined splendor to a motorcycle jacket. Mes chéris, I certainly hope that you’re ready for a lesson in corsetry.

Charlotte Russe "Ruffle Lace Corset" There’s something so sensuous about the boudoir look. Blame it on the self-indulgence it conveys, or the carnal instincts that roar to life at the mere thought of it; but the style is gratifying to the senses, and nothing manages to embrace it so well as Charlotte Russe’s Ruffle Lace Corset. Black lace enshrouds only the front of the white solid satin bodice, as ruffles travail the bust and hemline. The sweetheart neckline adds a demure, Lolita-like appeal; while the back zipper closure and boning about the sides keeps your posture perfect to keep you from falling into a slouchy stupor. Oh, how I long to pair this with a black satin pencil skirt, and sky-high black patent pumps. It’s the perfect ensemble for a day at the office (if topped with a trendy blazer, of course), or a night on the town with a few of your closest pals. Romantic, dainty, ladylike…the heroines of yesteryear would be proud.

Topshop "Dark Roses Cup Corset Top" Don’t wait for a cute boy to bring you flowers, darlings; simply flaunt them about a cute blouse like Topshop’s Dark Roses Cup Corset Top. A white backdrop is covered in foliage of reds, pinks, corals, and greens lifelike enough to fill the air with the scent of flowers, while keeping you looking lovelier than ever. I can picture the scene now. White skinny jeans, bare feet donning coral nail polish, a single flower ring wrapped around my right index finger, a rose tucked primly behind my ear, the Dark Roses Cup Corset Top, and a porch swing. Add a serenading boy, a cool cup of lemonade, and a few stolen kisses into the equation and you have sheer perfection.

Nanette Lepore "Artisan Corset" Known for her attention to detail, and love for feminine styles; it’s no surprise that Nanette Lepore would take something as dreamy as a corset and turn it into a piece that is black and white and fabulous all over, in addition to being effortless and easy to wear. But that is exactly what she did with the Artisan Corset. Black and white stripes criss-cross vertically about the bust, then change their course as they move up and down horizontally over the bodice. It’s an updated jailhouse rock look that works for the office or an after-hours cocktail party, and will keep all eyes lingering on you, and only you.

Victoria's Secret "Corset Blouse" Corsets are synonymous with dainty femininity; yet the Corset Blouse from Victoria’s Secret manages to present a very sultry, rock and roll feel due, in large part, to the many buttons spotting the front. This is not to say that the style goes grunge or goth in any way, as the cap sleeves and lacey bits illustrate all too well; but for the girl looking to embrace the corset style, without appearing as if she’s wearing lingerie, this particular piece does the trick magically. Smokey eyes, a few large silver bangles or cuffs, winged eyeliner, blue jeans…it’s a look that will have everyone eating out of the palm of your hand!

Forever 21 "Floral Ruffle Corset" I would love to say that there is a reason for my adoration of Forever 21’s Floral Ruffle Corset, but instead I’ll have to admit defeat, and simply state that I’m speechless. There’s just something about the top that has made me smitten. Perhaps it’s the muted, understated pale purple backdrop that would look stunning paired with dark wash skinny jeans. Maybe it’s the tiny pink flowers that adorn, yet never overwhelm. Or perchance my passion lies more within the ruffled trim and hem; the vintage hook-eye back placket; or the shoulder straps, which are both adjustable and removable. No matter the reason, I covet this cute little corset, and find myself dreaming of having a childish, yet quaint tea party while donning it.

Lesson complete…any questions?

Fashionably yours!

Smitten Saturday

Caught You Redhanded Darlings, I saw you at the scene of the crime. I know your fingerprints are all over the objects in question. Face it, you’ve been caught redhanded. Don’t worry, so have I. Or at least, I will be quite soon. And you can blame it all on Redhanded. Earth-friendly, fashionable, vegan…these are not your typical eco-friendly, reusable bags. Redhanded’s carryall’s are a chic way to dress up your collection of accessories, while still displaying your love of the universe. Looking to add a little rebel rocker chic to your wardrobe? Look no further than the Handcuff Clutch. Searching for a bag to accompany you on that upcoming preppy yacht trip? The Fleetweek Tote is for you. Want to put an extra spring in your step? All you need is the Ladybird Purse. Doesn’t it feel wonderful to be caught redhanded?

Ice, Ice Baby I will not let lactose intolerance stand in my way. I will disregard all thoughts of the damage frozen sugary treats will do to my waistline. And I will cast all worries about brain freezes aside. After years of watching Ina Garten concoct frozen Espresso delights; Paula Deen put together spicy chilled Cinnamon treats; and Katie Lee Joel whip up creamy Caramel-Toffee confections, I have come to the very clear conclusion that the flavors thought up by Ben & Jerry and Haagen-Dazs just aren’t doing it for me anymore. My tastes have matured in a way I never thought possible; and the only way to truly satisfy them is by creating ice cream flavors of my own. Oh, making my own ice cream from scratch certainly sounds like a blast, but I simply don’t have the time to do so; therefore, enlisting the assistance of Perfect Flavor is the only solution to satisfying my sweet tooth. First I’ll start with a base – cheesecake or gelato sound quite appealing – next I’ll add vanilla. A mix-in of hot chocolate, and cookie dough; a cute name for my creation; and voila! An ice cream that suits my tastes to a T!

Good Vibrations Four things I cannot live without…mascara, under-eye concealer, lip gloss, and eyeliner. Any other cosmetic is pretty unnecessary to my collection, or so I think; but these four are with me at all times. Of course, it did take me a full three months to grow comfortable with using mascara, and learning how to avoid stabbing myself in the eye with the wand over and over again; but once that bridge was crossed, it was smooth sailing. Now, however, a new bit is available; one that has managed to pique my interest like no other…vibrating mascara. I have never been one to wiggle my mascara wand like the professionals do, but vibrating mascara? Well, it has the power to wiggle the wand for you. Lancome’s Oscillation. Maybelline New York ’s Pulse Perfection. Estee Lauder’s Turbolash. Could it be that the key to beautiful eyes and fabulous lashes lies in the mere push of a button and a few good vibrations?
Face to Face There’s nothing that I love more than a little face time in the mirror wherein I dissect every crease, crevice, and imperfection that may spot my appearance; but the truth of the matter is that it simply isn’t healthy. Non, a more appropriate way to put forth your best face is to don a second mug front and center across your chest. Alice + Olivia’s Painted Face and Bow Tee in White, sporting come-hither goo-goo eyes, a pink puckered mouth, and rhinestone embellishment’s is impossible to resist; Forever 21’s Couture Icon Tank is a metallic dream complete with a removable black self-tie bow sitting about the shoulder; the gossipy Kitson Conversation Tee, splashed with pops of color, rhinestones, and two chit-chatting best friends works for day or night thanks to the breezy dolman sleeves; and Superfine’s slouchy T-Shirt in Charcoal is a perfect top for a day of lounging about the house or running errands. As they say, two heads are certainly better than one!

Objects In Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear I’m one of those people who are always curious about the history of thrifted items. Who did they belong to? Where did they originally come from? The Significant Objects Project, on the other hand, feeds off of tall tales that accompany old treasures. Thingamajigs purchased at garage sales or thrift stores are then paired with a writer who pens a fictional tale about its history, providing the insignificant whatchamacallit with significance. The piece is then listed on eBay with the accompanying story; the individual who wrote the anecdote receives the proceeds, and Significant Objects? Well, they post the results – how much the item sold for, original prices, stories, photos – on their site for the world to see. Why on earth did I not think this project up myself?

Dear Diana It is not often that I lay my eyes upon a jewelry designer’s handiwork, and instantly proclaim… “I need that!” about each and every one of their beautiful baubles. In fact, the last time such behavior took place was when I fell head over heels for the Lola and George line. But it is happening again. Now, I am in love with Diana Warner. Her designs are a blend of New York sophisticate, and saucy simplicity; a juxtaposition formed via a childhood filled with dance classes and sports teams. I need? The Cocktail Ring in Aquamarine. I want? The Buddha Necklace. I love? The Eve Earrings. Dearest Diana you are a jewelry-loving fashionista’s dream!

What were you smitten with this week?

Fashionably yours!
