NOTD: Sally Hansen Pacific Blue

Manicure: Sally Hansen Hard As Nails Xtreme Wear Nail Color Pacific Blue. Electric Cobalt / Cornflower Blue.

How To: For this manicure I used one coat of Essie's First Base Coat for adhesion; two coats of Sally Hansen Hard As Nails Xtreme Wear Nail Color in Pacific Blue; and one coat of Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat.

Notes: If you’re going to buy just one blue shade for your nail polish collection, let it be Pacific Blue. This is seriously the most incredible blue shade you will ever see. Though it’s not a neon, it is super bright and electric to look at – one of those colors that instantly catches your eye, and makes it hard to look away because it is so, so pretty. I see it as being a cross between cornflower blue and cobalt blue with a hint of periwinkle undertones in certain lighting.

Like the Sally Hansen Hard As Nails Xtreme Wear Nail Color in Coral Reef I reviewed last week, the formula on Pacific Blue is fantastic. It’s very smooth, and is fully opaque in two coats (you may be able to get away with one coat if you have a heavy hand when applying). Also like Coral Reef, Pacific Blue has the easy-glide brush that I was raving about, so there is absolutely no drip during application – and the coats go on super smoothly.

This color has made Sally Hansen my new favorite drugstore nail polish brand, as the quality is just amazing for the price – under $3.00. This can be a hard to find color sometimes, so if you manage to spot it, no joke…buy multiple bottles. It is just that gorgeous.

Accessories: Forever 21 Iridescent Cutout Ring in Blue / Antique Silver.

Stylishly Hit the Road with Travel Blue!

“Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Mr. Emerson was quite the brilliant individual, in addition to being a forward-thinker, for he seemed aware of the necessity of carrying beauty and style not just in our minds while traveling, but on our person, as well. Quite similar to the ideas presented by Travel Blue – a company determined to bring fabulous Travel Accessories for women to the forefront.

Travel Blue focuses on both the presentation and comfort level of the traveler, delivering dual-purpose products that cater to the worldly woman who is always on the go – function and fashion – via travel accessories that make the globetrotting gal look and feel fabulous regardless of what continent she may find herself tripping along.

Each product offered serves up a solution for a standard unavoidable travel conundrum – from eye masks that allow you to rest your tired peepers in true Holly Golightly fashion while in-flight or at your final destination, to travel blankets that keep you cozy in chilly airplane compartments; and even a winter set made up of a fleece scarf, hat, and gloves that will keep you cozy (and chic!) in harsh weather conditions.

Travel Blue brings you everything you need before you begin your journey, to ensure that your adventures abroad are never compromised or interrupted – a quality that no adventurous girl can possibly refuse.

What travel accessories are your essentials while on the go?

Colorful Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend!

Kate Middleton (aka Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge; Princess Catherine), Jessica Simpson, and Katie Holmes have illustrated one very important trend in the jewelry world via their drop dead gorgeous engagement rings…fancy colored diamonds are a girl’s best friend!

While colorless diamonds have been a staple in relation to beautiful baubles for decades; the crème-de-la-crème of royalty, celebrities, aristocrats, and high society stunners have oftentimes foregone the simplicity of clear diamonds in favor of more unique-colored gems – from yellow diamond wedding rings and natural pink diamond engagement rings to natural colored diamond jewelry. This stylish seal of approval from Hollywood has boosted the popularity of these rainbow-colored creations, placing them at the tip top of the fashionable set’s wish list. Myself included.

Though utterly brilliant to look at, what I find most captivating about fancy colored diamonds is the meanings behind each haute hue. Pink Diamonds are indicative of Rare, Eternal Love. Yellow Diamonds signify a Joy of Nature. Blue Diamonds reflect Ancient Wisdom. Green Diamonds are a show of Natural Growth. Red Diamonds are the rarest of all, and symbolize Unique Passion.

I’m partial to Pink and Blue Diamonds myself. Which fancy colored diamond tickles your fancy?

In My Closet: mark High Drama Pumps

Despite the fact that I have been suffering through temperatures of 115* for the past two weeks, I have begun shopping for fall items, and have already acquired one blazer, one pair of boots, and a handful of sweaters. My favorite acquisition, however, doesn’t fall into any of these clothing categories – rather, it is a posh-meets-playful pump. The High Drama Pumps, to be exact, which I was lucky enough to receive from mark last week; and absolutely had to share with all of you, because I am literally obsessed with them. Plus, a lot of people asked me about them after I posted this picture on Instagram @cafefashionista a few days ago – so I thought it was the perfect time to introduce them. So, without further ado…

…these are the High Drama Pumps. They are colorblocked faux suede that mix black, chocolate brown, and a sandy tan/camel color together; and sit on a 4 ½” block heel (similar to the one seen on the Miu Miu Sparrow-Print Pumps from a couple of years ago) that is super sturdy and comfortable (we’re talking walk-and-stand-for-8-hours-comfortable).

Because of the color scheme, these scream fall to me, and I think they will look amazing with chocolate-colored tights and sweater dresses, or wine-colored miniskirts and chunky sweaters once the weather starts to cool down; for now, I have been unable to resist wearing them, so I’ve been pairing them with cropped blazers and cutoff denim shorts, as well as skinny jeans and basic tanks. Oddly enough, they literally look fantastic with anything because of the mix of neutral tones, which is always a plus. I personally find that they have a very early Blair Waldorf / 1920s Spectator Pump vibe to them (but that might just be me and my obsession with Gossip Girl and The Great Gatsby).

I have the Size 6, and it definitely fits true to size. There aren’t any half-sizes available, so if you’re between sizes, I would say go up. I wear between a 5 ½ and 6, and have a very narrow foot, and found that these fit me perfectly (and comfortably). If you are looking for a colorblocked heel, the mark High Drama Pumps come highly, highly, highly recommend from yours truly because they are ridiculously affordable ($42.00!), adorable, and, in my opinion, an absolute essential for fall/winter. Love. Them. ♥

NOTD: Sally Hansen Coral Reef + Wet N Wild Kaleidoscope Accent

Manicure: Sally Hansen Hard As Nails Xtreme Wear Nail Color Coral Reef. Pink-Based Coral. Accent Nail: Wet N Wild Wild Shine Nail Color Kaleidoscope. Silver and holographic glitter in a clear base.

How To: For this manicure I used one coat of Essie's First Base Coat for adhesion; two coats of Sally Hansen Coral Reef; four coats of Wet N Wild Kaleidoscope (on ring finger – accent nail); and one coat of Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat.

Notes: I’m not big on pink polishes, as they can sometimes be a little boring in my opinion, but Coral Reef is not your standard pink. It is a pink-based coral hue (much different than an orange-based coral) that has a very summery vibe to it (think bikinis, sandy footprints, lost treasure, and sandcastles). The formula on this polish is incredible – not thick, not thin, just perfect. It was fully opaque in two coats; and it has an amazing easy-glide brush which I found was so fantastic in creating a perfect manicure in a minimal amount of time as it gives you full control, and literally does not drip.

I wanted to add a little something extra for this manicure, so I used Kaleidoscope for the accent nail. Kaleidoscope is a really gorgeous silver and holographic glitter (that looks like lights on a Christmas tree in certain positions) that is more of a topcoat; however, when you add a number of coats (I did four coats here), you can achieve opacity. Kaleidoscope isn’t a grainy feeling glitter, so it is completely smooth with the addition of Top Coat.

Both of these colors are seriously inexpensive (Kaleidoscope usually retails for $0.99, and Coral Reef is under $3.00 a bottle), yet have such great formula and lasting power. I had 0 chips on all nails for the entire time that I wore this mani (5 days). If you plan on wearing Coral Reef for more than three days, definitely refresh the color with an additional top coat, otherwise it starts to have a satin finish that isn’t shiny.

Accessories: Pieces Jorie Shop Ring in Gold via ASOS.

On My Back-to-School Wish List: Princess Vera Wang for Kohl’s

"Were you born to rule?"

I may be nearing my final semester before completing Grad School, but that does not mean that I am above Back-to-School Shopping, which has been one of my favorite sports (why yes, I do consider Back-to-School Shopping an athletic activity) since I was in the first grade selecting a backpack featuring a 3D TROLL head from the store shelves. This year, however my Back-to-School Wish List is a bit more sophisticated – consisting of playfulness juxtaposed with a touch of rebelliousness…in other words, the new Princess Vera Wang Collection for Kohl’s.

The Princess Vera Wang Collection is girly glam that features inspirations from era’s past – like the 70s Bohemian / Hippie vibe of the Sheer Studded Paisley Top; to the 50s-inspired Letterman Cardigan – which is incredibly on-trend for Fall 2012.

I myself received two pretty pieces from the collection – the Sheer Studded Paisley Top mentioned above, which I plan on wearing with skyscraping platforms and flared denim; and the Jane Polka-Dot Convertible Cross-Body Handbag, which is the perfect accessory for vampy, monochromatic looks. We are talking Back-to-School Shopping here, so of course two bits of beauty isn’t enough to see me through the semester; thus, check out the other Princess Vera Wang pieces that have topped my wish list!

Peep-Toe Platform High Heels - I LOVE the way the femininity of the blush shoe is tempered with a trim of edgy black lace ruffles. These would look adorbs with cropped pants!

London Calling Cropped Twill Jeans - The red plaid is such a fun, rock & roll throwback.

Colorblock Lurex Cardigan - Obsessed with the hot pink hue and contrasting orange trim; not to mention the very preppy vibe of the tiny crest placed over the heart. This is perfect for summer-to-fall fashion transitions.

Blazer - A blazer is always an appropriate addition to a girls wardrobe. The charcoal gray color of this one lends a more casual touch to the style – perfect with dark denim and boots!

Gold Tone Simulated Crystal Stack Ring Set - Stackable rings are the most versatile accessory in the jewelry world in my opinion. I love this particular trio, which features a bow, a fox, and a textured band.

Which Princess Vera Wang pieces have caught your eye?

Mary Jo Matsumoto Brings Fall to Your Fingertips!

“Nail lacquer is the ultimate affordable accessory. It can complement your clothing and change your entire look!”
Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, EVP and Artistic Director, OPI

As you may remember from my post back in December of 2011, I am a HUGE fan of Mary Jo Matsumoto’s 4FREE Nail Polishes, so I am super excited to announce her Fall 2012 Collections – the Caffeine Addiction Trio and the Laguna Libertine Trio; both of which I feel were created for me because one pays tribute to all things caffeinated (hello, Café Fashionista!), and the other features a color (Wilde Blue Yonder) that pays homage to one of my favorite people in history – Oscar Wilde!

Caffeine Addiction features three seriously fall-hued colors – Vanilla Latte Gratification (a taupe shimmer), Coffee Addiction (a soft caramel color), and Mood-Altering Mocha (a dark chocolate shade); while Laguna Libertine is a bit brighter, and perfect for the summer-to-fall transition featuring Wilde Blue Yonder (a royal / cobalt blue with subtle shimmer throughout), Bon Mots (an effervescent gold metallic), and Scandalous Lover (a brown-based vampy red). Both Trios retail for $36.00.

Out of the six colors, I think my personal favorites are Coffee Addiction, Vanilla Latte Gratification, Mood-Altering Mocha, and Bon Mots. Vanilla Latte Gratification and Bon Mots would work perfectly as accent nails (usually the ring finger) against darker-hued manis – I’d love to see (or try!) a Coffee Addiction manicure using Vanilla Latte Gratification as an accent nail. I also think that Bon Mots would look stunning as a Reverse French Mani with either Mood-Altering Mocha or Scandalous Lover (i.e. using Bon Mots for the tips of each fingernail, and one of the darker shades for the nail beds).

As you can probably tell from my NOTD posts, I use a TON of different nail polish brands - from high-end to drugstore offerings. From my experience, the formula for Mary Jo Matsumoto's lacquer collections is comparable to Essie and OPI; and is incredibly long-lasting, and usually opaque in just one coat - thus the reason why it is one of my favorite brands.

What shades do you love from the Caffeine Addiction and Laguna Libertine Trios? Are there any polish combinations you’d like to try using these colors?

Thanks to Mary Jo Matsumoto for the pictures.

NOTD: ORLY Frolic

Manicure: ORLY Frolic from the Happy Go Lucky Collection. Electric / neon purple with pink / fuchsia undertones.

How To: For this manicure I used one coat of Essie's First Base Coat for adhesion; one coat of ORLY Frolic; and one coat of Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat.

Notes: Frolic is one of those rare colors that is fully opaque in one coat - which, for me, is a first. A few weeks back I reviewed ORLY's Fancy Fuchsia, which I loved; but I far preferred the formula of Frolic over that.

Frolic has a thick formula, but it is super simple to work with; and stays put from the moment you place it on your nails. Sometimes I encounter polishes that run after you’ve applied them, which require a lot of clean-up afterwards – Frolic is not one of those. This one is perfect from the moment you put it on. I see Frolic as more of an electric than a neon color; however, it has neon qualities in that it does dry with a satin finish, so you definitely have to use a top coat for shine. Once you do apply topcoat though, this is literally one of the shiniest, most vibrant colors you will ever see.

Ordinarily I am not a huge fan of purple polishes, but this one has made it into my Top Ten Polishes of All Time - it is seriously that gorgeous. As a side note, this shade looks so pretty with just about any color it is paired with – I especially love how it looks with green.

Accessories: Dara Ettinger Chelsea Ring in Green.

Pumped Up Protection

As those of you who are frequent visitors to Café Fashionista probably already know, I am a self-professed shoe addict. Shoes are the one area of fashion that I will willingly (and happily!) spend more money, as I am a firm believer in the fact that shoes make the outfit; thus, you can imagine how devastating it is to see obvious wear on the soles of new shoes – be them pumps or wedges – after just a few spins around town. Resoling can be an expensive (and sometimes harrowing) process; so I was super excited to discover Protect Your Pumps.

Protect Your Pumps is a non-slip transparent adhesive that you place on the bottom of your shoes, which protects the soles, making them look brand new, and unworn. One pair costs $8.00, and can last up to 8 wears; while three pairs cost $20.00. The picture below shows a pair of pumps that were worn three times – the left illustrates the shoe that was protected with Protect Your Pumps, the right illustrates an unprotected shoe.

As someone who has experienced a strong look of wear and tear on the bottom of her shoes after just a handful of wears, I think that these are such a clever idea, and truly an invaluable accessory for fashionistas – especially shoe lovers. Plus, they make really adorable bridesmaid gifts, or stocking stuffers, as they come in super cute drawstring pouches.

And a little treat…Starting today, all Café Fashionista readers can receive 15% OFF their Protect Your Pumps order by using the CODE CAFÉ.

What do you think of Protect Your Pumps?

For the Boys: Find Your Personal Style

--Philip J Reed on behalf of Stetson

Wearing what magazines tell you to wear may be fashion, but it has little to do with style. Style is a personal matter. It's how Johnny Depp can get away with pairing wing-tip shoes and a fedora hat with a vintage 1970s white jacket that Elvis would have coveted. Fashion may substitute for style, but it isn't synonymous; find your personal style, and you'll never again have to hear, "You're wearing that?"

Start with a realistic assessment of your physique. How you're shaped determines what works on you, and wearing what works is key to developing a great sense of personal style. Dress for the body you have rather than the body you wish you had. Horizontal elements broaden and shorten; vertical elements lengthen and narrow. No matter how much you may love them, a broad-brimmed hat will make you look like one of the dancing toadstools in Fantasia if you're short because that brim draws a strong horizontal line. If you're barrel-shaped, go with vertical stripes to lengthen your torso visually.

No matter how you're shaped, fit and proportion can make or break your look. David Byrne and David Bowie are the only two men in history known to be able to rock an oversized suit without looking comical, and even they haven't tried it in the past couple of decades. If you love the look of roomy clothing, pair one big statement piece like a jacket with emphatic shoulders or slouchy pants with more closely tailored clothes. The same philosophy applies at the other end of the spectrum; skinny jeans and close-fitting jackets look best when they're set off with something not quite so tight.

Once you have a feel for what looks good on you, fit those style elements into a framework that appeals to you. What styles strike a chord with you? Do you wish that waistcoats and spats had never gone out of fashion, or do you envy Richard Roundtree's wardrobe in the original version of Shaft? Copying another look or era exactly is a costume rather than a style, but you can and should use the looks you're drawn to as inspiration. You don't have to go full steampunk and don a monocle and top hat, but you can accessorize a suit with a vest and a pocket watch. If you love hip-hop style, mix baggy, low-slung jeans with a lean white turtleneck or t-shirt.

Great style transcends fashion. It doesn't matter if fashion icons call snapback caps the next big thing if a fedora hat suits your sense of personal style. Wear what's right for you and set next year's trends.
