NOTD: China Glaze Trendsetter

This is two coats of China Glaze’s Trendsetter from the Fall 2011 Metro Collection. Avocado / Dijon Mustard with Gold Shimmer.

This is one of those colors that is perfect for the beginning of fall – especially if you love unique shades. I personally have a hot-and-cold relationship with this color. At times I adore it as it’s so different (sometimes avocado green, others mustard yellow); and at other times I have mixed feelings. It’s definitely one of those shades that will elicit a variety of opinions based upon your lacquer preference. Regardless, it is an incredible formula (as I’ve found China Glaze most often is); and a really cool shade if you’re looking for something unusual.

Accessories: Ring via Forever 21 (purchased years ago; though I loved the fact that it perfectly matched this mani).

In My Closet: mark Show Your Metal Necklace

Fashion Week has arrived, and one of the big trends of the moment is…statement necklaces! For that reason, I had to share with you one of my latest accessory obsessions that I’ve had for about a month now, and have been wearing multiple times each week because it is gorgeous, represents my favorite season (Fall!), and works seamlessly with the statement necklace trend. The item? mark’s Show Your Metal Necklace. If you Follow Me On Instagram @cafefashionista you probably saw me post about this when it first arrived; for everyone else…voila!

I tend to lean more towards long pendant necklaces in my accessory choices; however, I wear a lot of V-Neck tops for elongation, so I am always on the hunt for a glamorous bib-type necklace that is lightweight – this one totally fit the bill.

The mark Show Your Metal Necklace is a gorgeous antique burnished brass color that is super pretty for autumn, as it makes you think of the changing colors of fall; which brings me to my favorite aspect of this piece…the motif! When you look closely, you realize that the necklace is actually constructed of five oversized layered leaves that are so rich, decadent, and evocative of all things autumn (Pumpkin Spice Lattes from Starbucks, cable-knit sweaters, cognac-hued riding boots…the list goes on and on), that you can’t help but to wish for chilly weather whenever you wear it.

POSITIVES:
Super affordable - $24.00!
Lightweight.
Versatile color that looks gorgeous paired with silver or gold jewelry.
Perfect for the statement jewelry trend!

FASHIONISTA VERDICT:
5 / 5 Hearts!
An essential for the girl looking for an elegant and affordable luxury to add to her jewelry collection; and an absolute necessity for the classy lady who wants a touch of autumn in her life year-round!

August 2012 Favorites: Beauty

Say hello to my August beauty favorites. Let me know if any of these are favorites of yours; or what beauty products you’re currently loving in the comments section!

e.l.f. Nail Polish Remover Pads - As you can tell from my NOTD posts, I absolutely love nail polish. The thing I don’t love is removing it. I always find removing nail polish to be a frustrating, time-consuming, and messy process; so when I stumbled upon the e.l.f. Nail Polish Remover Pads, I was hoping for the best, but didn’t know what to expect. Needless to say, I have since bought eight more packs, because I am so obsessed with these. Each pad is saturated with a citrus-scented nail polish remover, and you can use both sides, so it’s as if you’re getting double the quantity. Unlike standard nail polish remover, these are no drip, no mess, and typically get the job done with the use of two pads (10 fingers). These are also perfect for travel as they are not marked as a hazardous material the way a bottle of nail polish remover is, so you can bring them on airplanes – perfect for jet-setters! If you are as obsessed with nail polish as I am, these are an absolute must. $2.00 for a Pack of 20.

mark Keep It Going Longwear Eyeliner & Shadow in Iconic - The first eye shadow that I ever used was mark’s i-Glimmer Illuminating Eye Color in Bronzed which was, sadly, discontinued a few years ago. Luckily, I still have a small stash of it that I use all the time; but I’ve been looking for something else that I will be able to use once my supply is gone, which is how I came across mark’s Keep It Going Longwear Eyeliner & Shadow in Iconic. Iconic comes with a golden/bronze shadow, and a gold-flecked forest green liner. What I love about this product is that it’s gel-based, creamy, buildable, super-pigmented, and, even in 100*+ weather, it lasts and looks like it was just applied. I use a swipe of the gold shade for my lids, and I layer the green liner over my standard black eyeliner for added vibrancy (I have green eyes, and find that I love this combo). There are over five different color combos of this product available (including a smoky eye duo), so they are definitely worth checking out.$11.00 for 0.04 oz. net wt.

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipgloss in Nude Lustre, 040 - When I do my makeup my main focus is my eyes, so I always go for a nude lip. I don’t personally wear lipstick, because I don’t like how it feels on me, and I like the shine of gloss. That said, I picked up Revlon’s Super Lustrous Lipgloss in Nude Lustre, 040. While it has the shine of a gloss, I find that it has somewhat of a lipstick-y texture; however, not enough so that it bothers me – I actually really love this product. This is probably one of the most long-lasting lipglosses / lip colors I have ever used. I can put it on, and drink or eat, and the shine and subtle hint of rosy nude color lasts for hours without needing reapplication. Initially, I didn’t know if I really liked this product, so I put it aside for awhile, then tried it again earlier this month and fell in love with it. I find that my change of heart came from the addition of a lip balm. This product, like a lipstick, can be drying on your lips, so if you don’t use a lip balm underneath it, the wear is very uncomfortable. Layering it over a lip balm, however, makes it awesome. $6.99 for 0.2 fl oz.

e.l.f. Essential Shimmering Facial Whip in Lilac Petal - My skin is very pale, and I use a lot of black eyeliner and black mascara, so I have always been scared to try a blush because I don’t want to look too made-up or theatrical. I do, however, love the look of a shimmery highlight on the cheekbones, but have never really known which one to purchase; so when I found the e.l.f. Essential Shimmering Facial Whip in Lilac Petal (a dupe of BENEFIT’s High Beam) for $1.00, I figured it was worth a try. It has now become a part of my daily beauty routine. I put a few dots at the very top of my cheekbones then use my ring finger to pat it in, and I find that I get the prettiest all-day glow that adds a hint of color to my face without competing with my eye makeup, or making me look overdone (see below for a picture of this product on my cheeks). A lot of people say that this product separates (water base and color divides from one another). I have not encountered that problem because I shake the tube vigorously for one minute before using it; so if you decide to use this product, I recommend doing that. $1.00 for 0.34 oz. net wt.

ORLY Frolic - You may remember me featuring ORLY’s Frolic as one of my NOTD’s a few weeks ago. At the time I mentioned that it had made it onto my list of Top Ten Polishes of All Time; but since then it has made it onto my Top Five Polishes of All Time list, because I have gone back to it a few times over the past few weeks for both manicures and pedicures, and don’t think that I will ever tire of it. This is one of those must-have shades for girls who want a feminine color on their nails, but are bored with basic pinks and purples. Frolic is anything but basic. It is an electric / neon purple shade with pink / fuchsia undertones that is super-wearable year-round; and is a complete attention-getter (I receive so many compliments when I wear this shade). Plus, it is one of those rare one-coaters – which no one can really resist. Obsessed! $8.00 for 0.6 oz. net wt..

So those are my August beauty favorites. Let me know in the comments section what beauty products you’re loving right now; or, if you have any questions about the products I featured here, ask away below.

NOTD: Essie Mojito Madness

This is two coats of Essie’s Mojito Madness from the Summer 2012 Collection. A fun-loving, lime green.

Out of all of the nail colors I have used this summer, this is probably in my Top 3. The formula is absolute perfection – not streaky at all, and gorgeously opaque in two coats. Essie calls it lime green, but I’d place it more along the lines of a Kelly or grass green – very bright and playful!

Accessories: Pieces Helle Jade Stone Ring via ASOS.

A Kiss for KITSCH: Hair Ties Review

Despite the fact that much of my life is devoted to fashion; I spend a large amount of time doing physical activities in the form of working out and ballet. Meaning? I need a strong hair tie or headband to hold my hair out of my face. Sadly, the ones I have come across in the past have made me feel less than glamorous; so when I received an e-mail from KITSCH inviting me to try out some of their hair accessories, I was beyond excited. And now, looking back, I am thrilled that I jumped at the opportunity, because they have become one of my absolute favorite accessories for working out, ballet, or simply hanging around – plus, they double as super adorable wrap bracelets!

I received a handful of headbands, and about 20 hair ties, all in varying colors, prints, and textures. My favorite would have to be the Metallic Mix pieces, which are made of a material that almost looks and feels like velvet (but isn’t), and are super sparkly, so they add a really pretty shimmer to your hair that makes you feel a bit glamorous and sophisticated even when you’re simply wearing denim; but the Swan Lake offerings have literally become my BFF’s for dance, as the muted, pastel tones match my leotards.

What I love about all of these pieces is that they don’t have that painful pull / rubberband factor that accompanies standard hair ties and headbands; yet they still stay in place, and keep your hair out of your face just as effectively.

KITSCH truly has a fan for life in me, and my friends (one of whom has already swiped a few of my hair ties; and three others who purchased sets from Anthropologie and Free People). And, thanks to the affordability of the sets, I plan on stocking up on these to use as holiday gifts because they are absolutely perfect for everyone – from the fashion-forward to the athletic.

The headbands are my absolute favorites. Which KITSCH products would you love to try?

Luxe Sports Style Season Has Arrived!

Trainer Trends to Watch Out for in 2012

With the buzz of the Olympics still in the air, it is no surprise that sports inspired footwear is hot this season. If you want to freshen up your wardrobe for the season ahead, here are two footwear trends that are not to be missed.

Neon Hues are Hot for AW12

After watching some of the world’s best athletes competing in neon trainers, it is not a shock that we want in on the action. You do not have to be an Olympian to sport this season’s hottest look. Brands such as Nike, Adidas and Supra have all incorporated neon designs in to their collections this season. The neon trend is big for autumn and winter, so why not make a statement and amp up your own sense of style? Take your footwear collection from boring to bling with a pair of neon trainers.

Sports Luxe is Big this Season

Sportswear used to be reserved for sporting activities alone but the Sports Luxe trend has changed this rule dramatically. Sports Luxe puts a sports inspired twist on high fashion designs mixing luxurious fabrics and fashionable designs with an element of comfort that we get from sportswear. Designers such as Stella McCartney, Alexander Wang and Victoria Beckham are all huge fans of the sports luxe trend and this is reflected in their latest collections. However, it is not just high end designers that love this trend. High street stores are packed with sports inspired collections that boast both comfort and style.

Brands to Buy in 2012

With so many footwear brands available to choose from how can you decide which trainer brands deserve a place in your collection? It is now much easier to find trainers that are both functional and fashionable that can be worn both in the gym and on the street. In the past, it was unusual to find trainers that were not white but today you can buy trainers that still boast high performance in any colour of the rainbow.

Go Online for the Best Footwear Deals

If you want to find the trendiest trainers at the best price, start your search online. You can browse hundreds of trainers on the web and take advantage of the best footwear deals that cannot be found on the high street. You can avoid the hustle and bustle in the shops and get the latest trainers delivered direct to your door. If you are looking for the best brands, you will find Nike, Supra and Adidas Originals at Foot Asylum.

Golf Goes Glam!

There may have been a time when the attire associated with golfing was thought to be lackluster; but with the surge of females entering the natty sport, not to mention one Ms. Rory Gilmore’s unforgettable golf attire on Gilmore Girls more than a decade ago, golfing has received an extreme makeover of the glamorous variety – from golf shoes mimicking the style of dainty ballerina flats, to vibrantly-colored skorts, and truly chic Clubs de Golf.

It’s the type of stylish change that has left even the most finicky of fashionistas clamoring for a club, and dropping lingo normally heard on the green in everyday conversation. How ace is that?

NOTD: Mary Jo Matsumoto Naked State of Mind

This is three coats of Mary Jo Matsumoto's Naked State of Mind from the Pacific Coast Highway Naked At the Beach Trio. Opaque Seashell Pink / Nude.

Remember when I featured MILANI’s Dress Maker and said that it was a buildable formula? This polish has that very same versatility. At one coat it was completely sheer; at two coats it took on a milky/pink tone; and at three coats I achieved the perfect opaque seashell pink color.

The polish is slightly thick, but goes on very smoothly, giving you a perfectly even layer. It also dries incredibly quickly; and, my favorite thing…showed zero tipwear during the six days that I had it on.

Accessories: Forever 21 Lacquered Rhinestone Ring in Nude/Silver.

Colorize Your Eyes!

“Almost nothing need be said when you have eyes.”
Tarjei Vesaas

I am a sucker for pretty eyes. My entire makeup routine revolves around enhancing my eyes – which are green; and when I meet someone, the very first thing I notice about them is…their eyes! The length of the lashes, the size, and, above all else, the color. Megan Fox has a brilliant blue, Elizabeth Taylor had an unusual violet, Kristen Stewart has gorgeous green, and Nicole Richie has the most stunning honey color on the planet. We often go out of our way to match our clothing to our eyes to make them truly pop. But getlenses.co.uk gives us the opportunity to do the opposite – match our eyes to our clothing!

GetLenses is a mail-order contact company that stocks contacts of a number of brands – Air Optix, Acuvue, and Focus Dailies, to name a few; as well as contact lens accessories like solution, carrying cases, and, one of my favorites, contact-friendly cosmetics. The clincher is that the prices at GetLenses are far lower than standard retail; so if you wear contacts daily, like I do, it makes them far less inexpensive.

The area that caught my eye is for Coloured Contact Lenses. I love the idea of having the ability to change your eye color from day to day – even if it’s just subtly. I find that it’s a versatile, painless way to change your appearance without extreme measures. GetLenses features super-stylish colored contacts in blue, green, violet, hazel, gray, brown, violet, and opaque.

What I love about the colored contact lenses is the fact that you can choose from a number of different colors from each category, based upon how intense you want the color; so if you choose hazel, you can select from pure hazel, hazel, or honey. And if you go for green, you can select from turquoise, gemstone green, aqua, green, or sea green. I personally love the look of the honey, and the amethyst.

Would you wear colored contact lenses? Which color catches your eye?
