the encyclopedia of eye enhancers

Blue. Brown. Gray. Green. Hazel. For every eye color, there is a mascara, shadow, or liner shade that intensifies the hue of your gorgeous gaze. The key is knowing what works best for you. And so, the encyclopedia of eye enhancers was born. Some of you may have read this as it was posted in weekly installments; for everyone else...let the lesson begin.

BLUE

From left-to-right.

Megan Fox is living proof that blue eyes can seductively smolder when accented accordingly. The warmth of terracotta shadows draw out the iciness of the blue, creating a contrast that will virtually stop people in their tracks; while turquoise and navies accentuate the blue of the eye, making the color more piercing. Bronze liners and shadows are a cool way for blue-eyed bombshells to play with metallics; and if you’re seeking vibrant color, you can’t go wrong with a purple palette that serves as a means of enhancing your hue. Subtly highlight with liners or mascaras for daytime; or go all-out with a bright, bold eye when the night falls.

BROWN

From left-to-right.

Brown eyes have a bad rap. Far too many write them off as boring, blasé, and impossible to accentuate. Truth? All of the above is completely incorrect {as Leighton Meester proves with all of her red carpet beauty looks}. Out of all eye colors, brown possesses the most versatility, as it serves as the perfect canvas to a wide array of makeup hues. Gold-flecked olive shadows and eggplant / plum mascaras draw attention to all splashes of green in your eyes; electrifying cobalt shadows and office-appropriate {yet still ultra-flirty} navy blue liners and shadows create a strong contrast that magnify your eye color; and warm metallic shadow {think golds, coppers, and cinnamons} adds depth and a coquettish twinkle to your gaze. As I said…brown eyes are so not boring.

GRAY

Gray is one of those in-between eye colors. Sometimes they lean green, while others they appear blue {as the impossibly beautiful Olivia Wilde illustrates perfectly}. The warmth of orange / apricot / tangerine or metallic copper shadows draws out the steeliness of gray eyes; dark chocolate liners and smoky mauve shadows add a mysterious touch to your gaze; and navy liners are perfect for highlighting any hints of blue in your eyes. Go subtle with your look by keeping in line with your natural hue with charcoal liners or pearl gray shadows; or play the sultry card with an eggplant liner and light purple shadow. Fifty Shades of Gray, and fifty ways to play. Have fun gray-eyed goddesses!

GREEN

Perhaps, as someone with green eyes, I’m slightly bias in my adoration of the shade; but I find it utterly captivating to look at, and incredibly fun to play up. The red undertones in purple shadow palettes and purple liners make green eyes brighter, and more emerald-hued; while taupe shadows with a touch of glitter and sparkle draw out golden flecks, creating a yellow-like cat eye. For smoky eyes, skip the deep blacks and opt for smoky metallic silver shadow palettes and silver-flecked charcoal liners to make your eyes shimmer {a la Kristen Stewart}; and don’t shy away from green shadows - simply experiment with different colors and textures. Try a metallic, smoked sage shade {I favor bronze-leaning hues myself} that will complement and enhance your eyes, rather than conceal their glamorous color. Just beware your choices, you're likely to leave many green with envy.

HAZEL

365 Beauty Guide: Hazel Eyes

From left-to-right.

Hazel eyes are incredibly fun to play with as you have the option of bringing out the umber/topaz/golden hues with bronze shadows {as Nicole Richie often does with her drop dead gorgeous eyes}, or you can go in a completely different direction, drawing out the green undertones of your peepers with eggplant and moss green shades. Either way, the effect is jaw-dropping; and allows you to change up your look from day-to-night, or simply day-to-day.
