{glossies made me do it} covergirl trunaked eyeshadow palette in roses

Last month for my first Glossies Made Me Do It post, I focused on food by making Candy-Cane Dipped Oreos; but for February I'm back to beauty. For those of you who don't remember, Glossies Made Me Do It is a monthly feature I partake in with Lauren of Shooting Stars Mag and Ashley of Happy. Pretty. Sweet. wherein each one of us selects something {a recipe, a book, a hairstyle...} from a monthly magazine {glossy}, and try it for ourselves {made me do it}. Find out what glossies made me do for February; and visit both Lauren and Ashley today to see what glossies made them do!

I mysteriously began receiving Better Homes & Gardens magazine a few months back; and while I typically don't pay much mind to it, when the February 2017 issue arrived in my mailbox bearing Red Velvet Heart Cookies on the cover, I so had to peek inside - and that is where I stumbled upon the Editor's Picks piece entitled Coming Up Roses {page 16}, which led me to the CoverGirl TruNaked Eyeshadow Palette in ROSES.

I've been curious about CoverGirl's TruNaked Palettes since they first hit drugstore shelves last year, but given a lackluster experience with Maybelline's The Blushed Nudes Palette, I've been leery to try them out. For Glossies Made Me Do It, however, I figured I'd take one for the team and give it a shot, and OMG am I glad I did!

A supposed dupe of Urban Decay's iconic Naked3 Palette, CoverGirl TruNaked Eyeshadow Palette in ROSES is a truly impressive drugstore offering. Though it offers half the shades of the UD Naked3; each one is buttery-soft and smooth, and packs incredible pigmentation. Additionally, the eight shades included within this neutral, rose-toned palette are a fantastic mix of matte and shimmers, with a great selection of transition and crease shades, so you can create a multitude of eye looks without having to reach for other palettes {always such a pain when you have to do that, right?}.

Shades {from wrist to elbow}: Mousse, Almond, Champagne, Baby, Rose Gold, Copper Rose, Dusk, and Mauvergine. My personal favorite shades are Rose Gold and Champagne, with Almond acting as a brilliant highlight shade for the browbone, and the three darkest shades {Dusk, Mauvergine, and Mousse} working as beautiful crease colors.

With an eyeshadow primer, the majority of these shades last for upwards of 10 hours, with just the slightest hint of fading - a factor that I find waaay impressive for an under $10 drugstore palette. I would highly highly recommend this one for you ladies who either have blue or green eyes or adore mauve-based neutrals. I think I may have to try out another TruNaked Palette in the future - perhaps the Goldens collection!

Looking for a new trend to try on for fall? Read my lips: onyx is the word. It's haunting and broody, but when topped with a killer gloss {especially one with a plum, crimson, or navy tint}, it turns more multidimensional gothic glamour rather than just plain middle school goth phase. Do you dare?

wednesday essentials...

Bag: Rebecca Minkoff Love Crossbody Bag in Black | Sunglasses: Shop Suey Boutique Dana Sunglasses in Brown c/o | Lip Balm: CoverGirl Lip Perfection Jumbo Gloss Balm in Watermelon Twist | Perfume: Victoria's Secret Victoria Eau de Parfum

My closet is full of handbags from Shop Suey Boutique; but I have never tried their sunglasses {though I have admired them from afar because...sunglasses!}. So when I was offered a pair for review I had to say yes; and thus, the Dana Sunglasses in Brown arrived at my door.

Glamorously oversize {you know how I adore all things oversize} and decadently chic; these have become one of my new favorite pairs of sunnies - and the fact that they are so affordable makes them even more so!

I've been sick for the past week, and these have been fab at making me feel elegant - despite the fact that I am literally dragging myself out of bed. I simply slip them on over no makeup eyes, pair with a pink balm, fruity floral fragrance, and quilted crossbody, and voila! The world is none the wiser that I'm under the weather. Perfect, yes?

What are your essentials today?

NOTD: CoverGirl The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Capitol Collection in Sulfur Blaze

Two coats of CoverGirl Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Glosstinis in Sulfur Blaze, 600 from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Capitol Collection. Yellow Glass Flecks in a Bright Yellow Base.

Confession: I only bought Sulfur Blaze because it was a part of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Capitol Collection, and I knew that it would be hard to find again if I passed it up. I'm not sure if I ever even intended to wear it, because yellow polishes? Yeah, I'm just not that into them. Anyway...I randomly chose this shade to wear for Thanksgiving, and ZOMG!

I was expecting a golden shade. Something slightly sparkly, but otherwise insignificant. Instead I got pure brilliance! Seriously though, look at how eye-catching this color is! It's just...BAM!

Sulfur Blaze is sheer. So sheer that you could do three coats, or maybe even four. If you don't mind a little VNL, however, you can use two {like me}. Opacity aside, the formula was fantastic. It's self-leveling, smooth, and, like with Rogue Red, free of brushstrokes.

I am not an advocate of yellow polishes; but in the case of Sulfur Blaze, I will say buy, buy, buy! It has a bright, blinding brilliance to it, that you truly must see for yourself.

NOTD: CoverGirl The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Capitol Collection in Rogue Red

Two coats of CoverGirl The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Capitol Collection in Rogue Red. Fiery Orange-Meets-Red with Metallic Golden Flecks Throughout.

Though I purchased about 5 colors from this collection, Rogue Red was the first I tried out because it seemed so perfect for autumn {tell me it doesn't remind you of changing fall foliage}.

The micro-shimmer in this polish is awesome. It has an iridescent touch that adds so much personality and liveliness to the color whenever you move your hands - almost like flickering flames {fully appropriate given the film/book namesake, right?}. I found the formula here to be perfect - opaque in 2 coats, no brushstrokes to speak of, and it dried quickly {always a plus when you're in a rush}.

NOTE: The colors from this collection are incredibly difficult to find. I haven't seen them anywhere since spotting Rogue Red {and a few other shades from the collection} haphazardly scattered at my local Wal-Mart. If you're a huge fan of the books/movies, however, you kind of need them in your life. That said...may the odds be ever in your favor.

NOTD: CoverGirl Outlast Stay Brilliant Glosstinis in Bahama Mama

Three coats of CoverGirl Outlast Stay Brilliant Glosstinis in Bahama Mama. Peachy Pink with Silver Shimmer Throughout.

The lowdown: Bahama Mama is, essentially, the love child of L'Oreal's Versailles Romance and China Glaze's Mimosa's Before Mani's - a fact that I am very happy about, because those have been two of my favorite nail shades of 2013.

The formula on this is very sheer; however, it is incredibly easy to build, so you can achieve the opacity that you're going for with minimal effort.

As far as I know, this is part of CoverGirl's Limited Edition Summer 2013 Collection; so definitely grab a bottle sooner rather than later if you're digging the color.

{beauty board} plum smoky eyes

Kristen Stewart is one of my favorite people to see on the Red Carpet because her makeup {especially the eyes} always looks ridiculously fierce. Smoky shadows in a variety of colors; tight black liner; and an overall smoldering gaze that you can't help but to want to try for yourself. My current favorite? The plum smoky eye {seen above}. It's absolutely stunning for fall {as russet / wine / merlot / plum / burgundy shades tend to be}; plus, it gives you a new, high-glam eye option for Night's Out. Here are five of my top picks for recreating this look:

plum eyes
ONE: Urban Decay in LAST CALL {$18.00} TWO: NYX Cosmetics in RUST {$4.50} THREE: Stila in METALLIC MERLOT {$32.00} FOUR: COVERGIRL in PURPLE PLUME {$6.94} FIVE: Stila in VENUS {$20.00}

If you aren't ready to go all-out red-based plum, Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Last Call is a great option. It has purple undertones, which make it easy to tread slowly into the plum smoke trend; and it has amazing pigmentation. Simply apply it in the crease of your lid, and blend it down into your lower lashline. One of my must-have products for this look is NYX Cosmetics Single Eyeshadow in Rust. It's under $5 {how can you resist?}; plus it looks absolutely gorgeous when worn alone, but can also be blended with other shades to create your own look.

If you, like me, love a hint of shimmer in your shadow looks, you will adore Stila's Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow in Metallic Merlot. The cream finish is intensely buildable, and the foil finish is stunning - not overly sparkly; just perfect. CoverGirl's Smoky ShadowBlast in Purple Plume is your new BFF if smoky eyes are a conundrum for you {plus it is amazingly affordable}. It's a dual-ended shadow stick that guides you in terms of application so that you wind up with a glamorous gaze with minimal effort. Another essential if you're slightly clueless about complementary shadow shades? Stila's Eyeshadow Trio in Venus. The trio includes lid, highlight, and liner shades so that you have everything at your fingertips for a gorgeous plum smoky eye!

{beauty board} bold gold shadow + purple liner

I usually contour my eyes with varying shadow shades; but I love the simplicity of a one-swipe system {i.e. one swipe of shadow from lashline to brow, followed by a swipe of lower-liner from outer corner to inner, followed by a swipe of mascara} - especially in glistening metallics and lush jewel tones. It's a look that has been seen on Charlotte Free in the Maybelline Pure Pigments adverts {above}, as well as the Nina Agdal for bebe fall 2013 campaign {both using bold gold shadow + purple liner}; and is super stunning for high-drama Girls' Night Out looks, but can also be adapted for the daytime hours {I myself have worn it for early-morning shopping dates}. Here are a few of my favorite products to Get the Look:

gold shadow
ONE: MAKE UP FOR EVER in Yellow Gold 10 {$20.00} TWO: Maybelline Pure Pigments in Wild Gold {$6.99} THREE: Lancome in 24 Karat {$19.00} FOUR: NARS in Corcovado {$24.00} FIVE: COVERGIRL in Gold Flame 330 {$5.94}

If you don't like a lot of fuss when it comes to makeup, you can't go wrong with MAKE UP FOR EVER Eyeshadow in Yellow Gold 10. It's crease resistant, so it looks just as fab at the end of the day as it did when you first applied. Maybelline Color Tattoo Pure Pigments Loose Powder in Wild Gold is a must if you want hyper-pigmentation on a budget. Loose Powder is not something you frequently see in a drugstore brand; but it is a great addition to makeup drawers, as it is buildable and very easy to blend. Lancôme Color Design Sensational Effects Eye Shadow Smooth Hold in 24 Karat is the epitome of luxe, and worth every penny. The shimmer effect is intense {but not so much so that you can't wear it to the office}; and the texture is like velvet. Definitely one of those obsession-worthy products.

If you prefer shadow sticks, NARS Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in Corcovado is basically an essential. It's creamy, and brightens up your eyes in a total OMG way. One of my new loves, however, is COVERGIRL Flamed Out Eye Shadow Pencil in Gold Flame 330. The gel-like formulation is soft and creamy; and there's a cooling effect when applied that feels amazing. It doesn't hurt that it's insanely affordable either.

purple liner
ONE: Urban Decay in Ransom {$6.00} TWO: Maybelline Pure Pigments in Potent Purple {$6.99} THREE: NYX in Purple Blaze {$8.00} FOUR: RIMMEL in Paranoid Purple {$4.49} FIVE: Mineral Essence in Purple Nebula {$12.00}

Urban Decay Vintage 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils are like the holy grail of eyeliners because they never fade and go on super smoothly. Ransom is the perfect color for recreating this liner look as it is a bright iridescent purple that will fully complement the bold gold shadow. If you don't have a steady hand when applying pen/wand-style liners, Maybelline Color Tattoo Pure Pigments Loose Powder in Potent Purple is a great solution for nailing your liner look - simply apply it with an eyeliner brush, which gives you a bit more control. My personal obsession is the NYX Slide On Eye Liner Pencil in Purple Blaze. I own these in about 15 colors, and cannot rave about them enough. The pigmentation is so amazing; and they never flake or fade {even if you, like me, wear them for 12+ hours a day}.

Double-duty beauty is always a nice feature; so if you want a liner that can work overtime as a shadow, RIMMEL ScandalEyes Eye Shadow Stick in Paranoid Purple is fab. Use it as a liner one night, and create a smoky purple eye the next. Like the Maybelline Loose Powder, Mineral Essence Liner Shadow in Purple Nebula is an easy choice if applying liner isn't your forte. This one also has silver undertones / particles, so if you love an extra kick of shimmer, you'll adore it.
