NOTD: OPI Fall Wonders Nail Lacquer Collection in Midnight Mantra
Y'all, I didn't realize just how ready for fall I was until I applied this beauty to my nails, but now all I can say is bring on the sweater weather!
Midnight Mantra is a delicious dark navy blue creme that appears teal after coat one, but really develops that delectable, deep, almost black navy appeal after coat two. For a shade that is so dark, the formula here was so simple to work with - no gravitating to cuticles or nail beds, just an easy peasy two coat and fast dry and you're good to go. Vampy babes you need this in your collection pronto!

BOOK REVIEW: The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau
I was substitute teaching in a fifth grade classroom earlier this year when I spotted a copy of Jeanne DuPrau's The City of Ember on every student's desk. Curiosity captured, I looked it up online once I got home, and downloaded a copy immediately to my Kindle. A dystopian story that feels all-too-possible-of-turning-reality given the current state of the nation, this is one bite sized story {I say this because I devoured it in a very short period of time} that lays the groundwork for a saga bursting with espionage and excitement, rumors and lies, and a journey to change the world forever as we know it.
Two hundred years ago, the city of Ember was constructed by builders to house the last of the human race after an unshared catastrophe wiped out the rest of the world - or so that is what Ember residents have been told. An underground, poverty-stricken locale that has captured the last of the light in the world, Ember is the saving grace of society; but as the great lamps that light the city begin to flicker, inhabitants start to worry - after all, should the great lamps fail to stay alight, the world is cast into darkness forever. But not all have lost hope.
Twelve-year-old Lina Mayfleet and her casual acquaintance/friend, Doon Harrow, have finally completed their schooling, and have reached the stage in their lives where they are assigned jobs. Neither, however, is content with the job that they received on Assignment Day. Lina has always longed to be a Messenger, but was assigned the boring task of Pipeworks Laborer; and Doon, fascinated with the innerworkings of Ember and determined to solve Ember's flickering lights problem, hopes nothing more than to be a Pipeworks Laborer, but draws the dreaded Messenger. Saddened by the luck of the draw, Lina and Doon trade jobs, so each has the assignment they desired, which sparks an unlikely friendship and exchanging of information.
Lina, as Messenger, spends her days racing across Ember, exchanging messages between recipients of both menial and extraordinary importance; while Doon spends his days in the underbelly of Ember, exploring secret caverns, and mysteries within. It is through their respective positions that they begin to uncover secrets about the only home they've ever known. Secrets about shortages and rations, the possibility of life beyond Ember, and the stealthy surplus and hoarding of goods by Ember's impassioned Mayor Cole. When Mayor Cole learns of Lina and Doon's knowledge, and their desire to expose him, the greedy politician begins a campaign to discredit the two, and imprison them. Now, they are forced to flee into the darkness to, hopefully, save themselves and the people of Ember from eternal darkness.
Y'all, I have said it once and I will say it again: it is hard reading dystopian novels in today's climate because so many things mirror reality; but I digress...they are engrossing. In comparison to series such as The Hunger Games or Divergent, The City of Ember is definitely tame in regards to violence; but this is Book One in a quartet, so that could change. This is a book that truly makes you question the excess of society, and teaches you to appreciate what you have - or, at least, that was my take-away. I can't say that I had strong feelings either way for Lina or Doon; however, again, it is book one, so those may develop over time. That said, I never warmed up to Katniss Everdeen or Peeta Mellark, so no guarantees. What I can guarantee, is that I will be reading Book Two, The People of Sparks, because I am truly itching to find out what lies beyond Ember.
If you're new to dystopians, this is a good introduction, as, compared to other dystopian releases in recent years, it's light and quickly read. If you're a seasoned dystopian reader, you may appreciate the slower pace and strong buildup to The People of Sparks. Wherever you fall on the spectrum, you should be able to find something, or someone, to root for!

The peachy undertones give it a flirty, playful vibe without making it feel juvenile; while the punchy color will make it perfect for manis or pedis all. summer. long. Formula is fab with a super simple application and 5+ days of wear. A must for all of you pink-loving boss babes!

BOOK REVIEW: Super Spinach {Adventures in Fosterland} by Hannah Shaw
When I tell you that I pre-ordered Hannah Shaw's Super Spinach {Adventures in Fosterland} back in October 2021, I am not kidding. Y'all, Hannah Shaw is like a quuen to me {and to all kitties} due to her incredible dedication and devotion to cats, so purchasing anything she publishes is a total no-brainer. Anyway...when this tale appeared on my porch on release day, delving into it immediately was a must; and let me tell you...it is the cutest. If you follow Hannah Shaw {aka Kitten Lady} on social media {which I'm assuming you do}, you likely already know the MCs from this book, Spinach and Chickpea; but seeing their rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption story played out in fiction is the type of treat that will be adored whether you're 1 or 100.
Spinach is not okay with being kept in her own cage at the animal shelter. While some may feel privileged to have their own sleeping space; Spinach feels completely left out. After all, the other kittens at the animal shelter get to spend their days batting crinkly balls about, climbing cat trees, and playing together, while she has to sit out on the sidelines, a silent observer. Spinach kind of understands the reason, she's not healthy like the other kittens and gets worn out very quickly; but that doesn't make her feel any less lonely.
When Spinach is evaluated by a veterinarian, she finally receives a life-changing diagnosis - Spinach has pectus excavatum, a congenital condition that causes the chest to be sunken. The veterinarian knows exactly how to fix Spinach up; and, after surgery, she finally has the ability to play, pounce, and jump! She also has something extra: a metal plate on her chest that has transformed her into...Super Spinach!
Soon Spinach is whisked off to Fosterland by a giant lady where she is provided with two very important things: 1) a variety of super-powered socks to protect her plate; and 2} a super sidekick named Chickpea. With her socks and sidekick with her at all times, Super Spinach is fearless. But then the unthinkable happens...Spinach's super suit socks are taken away, leaving her powerless. Now it's up to Spinach to rely on her powers from within rather than her super suit to save the day; but she may not be up for the challenge.
This book y'all...it put me in my feels. Seeing Spinach and Chickpea star in their own story was truly like a dream come true; and the fact that it was so full of adventure {and accompanied by the cutest illustrations ever!} truly made it that. much. better. For those who don't follow Hannah, The True Story of Spinach and Chickpea accompaniment at the end, along with the real-life photographs of this pawsome duo on the back cover are a welcome addition. I, for one, cannot wait to share this series with my students, as I am positive that they will adore it just as much as I did.
Side note: After reading this book, I realized that this is actually considered the second story in the series, with Emmett and Jez being book number one. If you, like me, make that error, don't sweat it. The books are not based on continuity, and can easily standalone. That said, make sure you buy them both because one dose of cuteness is definitely not enough. I'm now officially counting down the days for Book 3, Baby Badger, to hit shelves!

Kay is a brilliant bright pink creme that would be right at home on Barbie's nails. This beauty is lighter in shade than her collection counterpart, Gigi, but features the same incredible formula. This one, unfortunately, bubbled on me a tiny bit; but it seriously wasn't dealbreaker territory. Especially since the staying power was so phenom!

Babes this shade is seriously slaying.
Pink Big is a groovy matte bright pink shimmer that is a total essential for all of you ladies who love a little girly glam. This cutie is an absolute must for summer mani/pedi season, what with it's Barbie girl feel and subtle shimmer. I do recommend applying two layers of top coat to amp up the shine, as this one dries down to a matte finish.

BOOK REVIEW: Summer's Edge by Dana Mele
I never understood the meaning of the term slow burn when attributed to books until experiencing Dana Mele's Summer's Edge; but now I understand it all too well. So well, in fact, that I question whether I will ever experience it again in the world of literature, as it evaded me up until this point; and I truly can't imagine any other book bringing the slow burn quite like this unputdownable gem right here.
Emily Joiner was once a key part of an inseparable group of friends. A group so devoted to one another that die-hard loyalties lasted, despite regular rivalries and the occasional red hot romance; and summers were always spent lazing at Kennedy's family lake house. Last summer, however, was different - more complicated. Instead of the usual friend group consisting of Emily, Kennedy, Chelsea {Kennedy's on again, off again girlfriend}, Ryan {Emily's twin brother}, and Chase {Emily's lifelong crush}; Mila has been added to the mix. Mila, Chase's new girlfriend, is disliked by the girl's on sight, and the summer...doesn't end well - especially for Emily, who winds up dying tragically when the lake house burns to the ground.
Fast forward one year. The lake house has been painstakingly rebuilt - a mirror image of its former self; the only difference being that death has been scrubbed out. Now ready for guests, and with the anniversary of Emily's death upon us, a reunion has been set into motion. The five former friends each receive an invitation, of which they accept, arriving at the house with hesitation; questioning if they should have RSVP'ed yes from the moment they emerge from their luxury vehicles. With tensions running high, the group elects to try and put their differences aside, and make the most of this memorial, for Emily's sake; but Chelsea, who has been locked away in a mental health facility for the past year, begins having terrifying visions that are pushing her towards the brink - visions that may be more accurate than anyone would like to admit.
With creepy events occurring within mere moments of their arrival; accusations begin to fly - accusations implying that Emily's death was no accident. Even worse, it becomes evident that the group may not be alone on the lake house property - someone else tagged along, and they're seeking revenge. Their survival depends on their ability to unravel the mystery, and unearth the truth; but that will take working together, and pushing past a whole lot of old drama, which this group of frenemies does not seem ready for.
When I say that I could not put this book down I am being 100% real with you - it was so good. And that ending? Mic drop moment. I read so heavily that authors rarely surprise me or keep me guessing, but Dana Mele did that tenfold with Summer's Edge. Comparing it to The Haunting of Hill House was so accurate because, like THOHH, this book was always a step ahead, using the assumptions we make as readers {or viewers} as leverage to catapult us into some new surprise that legit makes. you. think. NGL, I really couldn't stand any of the characters, who are toxic to a fault; however, I did start to find Kennedy a bit more interesting once I read the portion of the book told from her POV, and learned about her supernatural abilities.
Cheers to Mele for finally introducing me to the slow burn. And to everyone else, your summer will be incomplete without a read of this book - get. it. now. A little word of warning though, your perception of boat rides and late-night lake swims may change significantly after turning the last page. Just saying.

Yo, girlies, this color is giving. it. to. me.
Mango For It is a fresh, flirty, fruity vibrant matte orange shimmer that feels positively made for the tropics! NGL here, if you opt for the matte look, this one is far lighter {think tangerine}; but when you add that top coat, the gloss brings out allll of those glorious, vibrant orange vibes.
Though all of the shades in the Power of Hue collection have featured shimmer throughout; Mango For It is one of the only colors where that shimmer is discernible and adds a juicy dimension to the overall look. Loving it!

OMG y'all this polish is phenomenal!
Gigi is a gorgeous red azalea creme that legit plays tricks on your eyes - appearing hot coral pink at times, and red coral at others. Regardless of which version your eyes see, however, this color is TDF. The kind of TDF that makes you want to repeat-wear all summer long. True story.
The formula here is straight up decadent, applying beautifully and drying at the speed of light. A very important thing to touch on here is that the brush is incredible - not too wide, not too slim, just perfect for achieving a model-worthy mani. Obsessed!

BOOK REVIEW: My Otter Half by Michelle Schusterman
In the name of being honest, let me tell you that I totally judged this book by its cover, and I am so glad that I did because I absolutely adored it! Michelle Schusterman's My Otter Half possesses the type of charm reserved for Disney movies {of which I hope it someday becomes}; while, at the same time, bringing the very real issue of oil spills and ocean pollution to the forefront in a way that educates without being overtly graphic or preachy. It's a tale of family {human, canine, and otter}, friendship, and finding your way home in the vein of both The Incredible Journey and Finding Nemo - and I, for one, feel that no heart would be untouched by the story found within these pages.
Oliver is a young sea otter faced with a difficult problem: proving to his pals that he is not a momma otter's boy, like they all believe. You see, the other young sea otters have already experienced land adventures; while Oliver has been told time and time again by his overprotective mother that the time will come for him to explore the land - for now he must remain where she can keep him safe. Tired of hearing no, Oliver takes it upon himself to create his own adventure to prove his bravery by swimming into Puget Sound alone, where humans and ships can be found by the dozens. Within a short time of arriving, however, an oil spill threatening local wildlife takes place, trapping Oliver in the harbor, and separating him from his friends and beloved momma.
Like Oliver, Franklin is lost from his family. The big diff? Franklin is a dachshund puppy with a penchant for chasing squirrels at inappropriate times - not a sea otter. Those squirrels I mentioned? Yep, the very reason why Franklin was separated from his owner, Lucy, in the first place. Franklin has absolutely no idea how to reunite with the doting Lucy; but when he meets Oliver, he's convinced that the two can help each other in finding their families as long as they work together. And so the two four-legged fellas embark on a quest through the Pacific Northwest wildnerness to do precisely that.
Told in alternating chapters from the POV of Franklin, Oliver, and Lucy, My Otter Half is a story that really puts you in your feels. Though the adventures of the incredibly mischevious Oliver and Franklin are oftentimes humorous, there are moments where your heart breaks for these two sweet creatures and their plight. Chapters told in Lucy's perspective are slightly different from those shared by Franklin and Oliver. Through Lucy, we see quite a bit of time searching for Franklin, but also struggling with family issues involving a rift between her mother and older brother, Zach. Most interesting about Lucy's chapters, however, are the details regarding the oil spill itself, and the animal rescues and clean-ups completed by her mother, who appears to be a marine biologist {though it is never specified} - this alone will intrigue young animal lovers and aspiring veterinarians, while aiding in a classroom study about oil spills.
As a new teacher and animal lover, who gravitates frequently to oil spill studies and the ramifications on wildlife, this is a tale that I would love to incorporate into my future classroom, tying it into science, ELA, and even social studies {using Google Maps to track the adventures of Franklin and Oliver}. Highly recommended!

Babes, I wore this bad boy for World Turtle Day {May 23rd}, and it 100% lived up to the occasion!
Make Rainbows is a lemming-esque matte green shimmer with lime tones that makes it feel fresh, fun, and unique on your tips. This one really surprised me, as I thought it would lean brighter; but instead it read a little darker than expected - and that was totally fine by me! This one showed signs of tipwear after about 5 days of application; but sparkled beautifully up until that point. Highly recommend this one if you love a good green!

Alert: summer essential shade right here babes!
Bee Unapologetic is a bright matte yellow shimmer that is basically sunshine in a bottle. True story. This one is sunny and brilliant and feels so sassy on the nails. The formula here wasn't perfection - while it dries fast, it does require three coats to achieve full, even opacity. Not a dealbreaker; but definitely worth mentioning. Other than that, it's kind of amazing - and absolutely essential for your beachy getaways this summer!

BOOK REVIEW: Six of Crows {Six of Crows, # 1} by Leigh Bardugo
Last May, having binged the Netflix adaptation of Leigh Bardugo's Shadow and Bone, I reviewed the book of the same title, only to find that the characters I truly adored from the TV series {Inej, Kaz, and Jesper}, were nowhere to be seen. Fast forward to April 2022, I elected to forgo the rest of the Shadow and Bone series {for the time being} and merely skip to the Six of Crows Duology in order to meet my favorite heist trio in novel form. Though intriguing and adventure-laden at times, I can't say that this introduction lived up to my expectations. In fact, I found myself slogging through repetitive dialogue, lackluster characters, and a premise that I was unable to ever become fully vested in - leading me to believe that I will not be reading part two. Womp womp.
Ketterdam {aka the Barrel}, a locale for sinners not saints, bustles day and night with international trade. Pickpockets prowl the streets; gangs take over entire territories; and, for the right price, anything can be had. No one knows this better than seventeen-year-old Kaz Brekker {aka Dirtyhands} - a criminal mastermind with fast hands and a crew of unlawful, fearless friends with the courage to take on any crime, known as The Dregs. Though Brekker is the brains behind each malfeasance; he himself knows that he would be unable to pull anything off without his crew of outcasts. And so, when he accepts the job of a lifetime, one that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams {if he survives}, he knows exactly who to enlist to get the job done.
The Dregs are quite the motley crew of criminals, with assorted pasts and personalities that oftentimes clash with one another; but they are a family of sorts - and families, regardless of how dysfunctional they may be, stick together. Inej {aka the Wraith}, a contortionist/spy with deadly dagger aim and a conscience; Jesper, a sharpshooter {and former farm boy} with a bad gambling habit; Nina, a hilarious Heartrender surviving the slums with the use of her magic; newcomers Wylan and Matthias; and Kaz himself - a convict hungry for revenge. Together, Kaz is convinced that he will be able to execute the heist of the century: penetrating an inaccessible prison facility known as The Ice Court and extracting Bo Yul-Bayur, the chemist behind the accidentally-created drug jurda parem, a product that, in the wrong hands, could spell disaster for Grisha. To the average criminal, it sounds like an impossible feat; to Kaz and his crew, it's a ticket to incredible riches.
This book y'all...I struggled - like, struggled-so-much-I-had-to-take-a-break-at-the-halfway-point. Don't get me wrong, I found the characters of Inej, Kaz, and Jesper to be entertaining at times, and seeing their backstory was intriguing; but the persistent shifts between character POV and present/past scenarios was enough to make my head spin. On top of that, I truly felt that, after the first 25% of the book, the rest of the story just kept going in circles. My main goal for continuing on was simply to finish it, so that I could begin the next book in my TBR pile - never a good sign. Part of my...disinterest in this story could be blamed on the romantic situations involving all of the characters, which I find incredibly boring; or, perhaps, I just wasn't sold on the characters willingness to attempt such an insane heist. Regardless of the reason, I feel that this will be my last foray into the Grishaverse and Bardugo's work as a whole.

This one is a breeze to work with; and, with a heavier hand during application, could def qualify as a OCW. Also pertinent: I received loads of compliments on this shade from my TK cuties, so you know it's a winner for sure!

NOTD: OPI Power of Hue Nail Lacquer Collection in Go to Grape Lengths
Y'all, I wish I could have gotten a direct sunlight pic of this bad boy because it is a sparkly paradise; but the weather wasn't cooperating, so this will have to do.
Go to Grape Lengths is a magical matte violet shimmer that is guaranteed to >step up your summer shimmer game; while seamlessly transitioning for fall wear come August/September. Yes, this one is a matte finish; but y'all know how much I love my shine when it comes to polish, so I applied top coat. #sorrynotsorry.
Even with top coat, however, this one was not as long-lasting as I would have hoped, which seems to be commonplace when it comes to mattes. I experienced chipping near the nail bed within a couple of days of application. Still a gorgeous color to add to your collection; but more of a short-term relationship shade.

Mermaid nails don't care!
Feel Bluetiful is a unicorn-like matte turquoise blue shimmer that legit makes you feel like a mermaid every single time you glance at your fingertips. Formula here was so amazingly simple to work with - applying quickly, and drying even faster. Yes, it has a matte finish; but I'm not a fan, so I added top coat to bring out the shine and shimmer. Y'all, this one earned me multiple comments from 5th graders {the harshest critics}, so you know it's amazing. Great staying power, great color...you need this one in your collection babes!

NOTD: NAILS INC. Florals… For Spring? Nail Polish in Primrose Hill Road
White polish will forever be my kryptonite, and this beauty didn't disappoint in the least.
Primrose Hill Road is a crisp, clean white creme that will undoubtedly make your tan pop this summer! This beauty is simple in shade; however, I did find the formula to be a little tricky to work with. Unlike most NAILS INC. polishes, this one did get a little flirty with my cuticles on coat one; but after a quick clean-up, and a little extra care, coat two applied perfectly. Loving this one for year-round, obvi.

BOOK REVIEW: Ghost Town {Saranormal, # 1} by Phoebe Rivers
Having grown up obsessed with the show So Weird, and believing that I was an amateur paranormal investigator, my heart skipped a beat when I learned of Phoebe Rivers' Ghost Town {Saranormal, # 1}. This is a series that my younger self craved - so much so that it felt eerily familiar to me; though I can't recall ever having read it in the past. Clearly a mystery in, and of, itself, yes? But I digress...one part Ghost Whisperer, two parts Meg Cabot's The Mediator, this is a short but sweet start to a series that is ideal for those who like a little paranormal phenomena in their lives.
From the outside, twelve-year-old Sara Collins appears totally normal. In fact, her blonde hair might even lead you to believe that she runs with the popular crowd, and is always fielding texts from admirers. You'd be half right. She is quite the popular character - just not with the living. You see, Sara is hiding two things from the world: 1} she can see dead people {ghosts}, and 2} she's psychic. Pretty crazy, right? Armed with the ability to see, and interact with, ghosts since she was a tot, Sara has grown used to her abilities - and the fact that they are detrimental to relationship-building with peers. After all, how can you find a bestie when you've got dead people dancing in your peripheral vision? When Sara's father uproots her from sunny California for an old shore town in New Jersey she thinks maybe things will change for the better...until she reaches her final destination.
Stellamar is everything that Sara didn't want in a new home. Quaint, charming...yes; but also old. Historic old. The type of historic old meaning there are ghosts everywhere - and they're all vying for Sara's attention. The worst part of it all? They're inescapable, because many are residing in the old Victorian she and her father are living in with the intriguing {yet oft-times odd} Lady Azura, an 80-year-old so-called Medium. But that's not the worst of it. While Sara has grown used to seeing ghosts around her, this is the first time she has ever been able to communicate with them - adding a whole new layer of bizarre to her abnormal abilities.
Sara wants to help the dead, especially one older gentleman who seems desperate for her assistance; but she's worried that there will be no turning back once that channel is opened. And now that she has finally begun to build strong friendships with the locals, Lily Randazzo in particular, she's reluctant to do anything that could get in the way of making Stellamar a home, and finally fitting in. Now she's left with the choice of ignoring her calling, or somehow melding it with her social life so that she can have a bit of both worlds for the first time ever.
NGL, mid-grade books tend to be my preference when it comes to reading because I l-o-v-e discovering series that I can share with my students. Plus, many have far more depth then other genres available - at least IMO. While Ghost Town feels more surface-level/shallow in regards to reading, it is a fast-paced tale full of friendship, charming sights, and a subtle mystery that female readers, especially, will enjoy diving into.
Sara is a reserved, fairly one-dimensional character who, while likable, will hopefully open up more in future installments; whereas Lily is a big personality who is playful and fun. While there are hints of future romance to come, I am most interested in learning more about the mysterious Lady Azura, who seems to be full of secrets and suspense. All that said, I found the climax to be an incredible letdown {hence the 3 stars}; and I don't feel anything, or anyone, really intrigued me enough to return for book two, Haunted Memories {Saranormal, # 2}. Not saying I won't; but the jury's still out.

BOOK REVIEW: Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan
Pam Muñoz Ryan's Esperanza Rising is one of those books that I passed by in bookshops for years, gazing fondly at the gorgeous cover, but never taking even a moment to read the synopsis on the back. When a co-worker recommended it to me after learning that I enjoyed Thanhhà Lai's Inside Out and Back Again, I didn't hesitate in instantly purchasing it on Kindle, and devouring every last word over the course of a single weekend. Timely and touching; Esperanza Rising is a tale that will overwhelm you with hope, sadness, and love - all while giving a bit of food for thought regarding the very of the moment topic of migration to the United States.
The year is 1930. Twelve-year-old Esperanza Ortega Muñoz has the life many girls would dream of in Aguascaliente, Mexico. The daughter of wealthy landowners, Sixto and Ramona Ortega; Esperanza has lived a privileged existence on the sprawling El Rancho de las Rosas, resplendent with rich foods, a collection of porcelain dolls, and extravagant clothes and celebrations. Days away from turning thirteen-years-old, however, Esperanza's world comes crashing down when her father is slain, the victim bandits harboring hate and jealousy towards wealthy landowners in the aftermath of the Mexican Revolution. Now a widow with an inability to run El Rancho de las Rosas alone; Esperanza's mother, Ramona, is faced with the option of marrying a powerful man whom she despises, or fleeing to the United States to provide a new life for her daughter. Selecting the latter; Esperanza's new life begins.
Leaving her beloved grandmother behind; Esperanza and her mother, along with a few of their former servants, secretly make the trek from Aguascaliente to a migrant camp in California, where all must adapt to changes. Once spoiled and pampered; Esperanza is now faced with learning how to do things without servants, and provide for her family all while trying to come to terms with her father's untimely death. When Esperanza's mother becomes gravely ill from a dust storm, then succumbs to depression, everything falls to Esperanza's shoulders. Suddenly, the girl who once spent her days swathed in silk dresses, is learning how to sweep, do laundry, and care for children too young to attend school - all without complaint.
As Esperanza saves her earnings, hoping for the chance to bring her grandmother to the US, she watches the fight for higher wages, better living conditions, and the establishment of a union and strikes formed by other workers swirling around her. It is only through prayer and patience that Esperanza is able to rise stronger and more empathetic than she ever could have imagined - and finally come to the conclusion that all things are possible with perseverance and togetherness.
Admittedly, I never expected to love this story as much as I did; but I didn't fall for it because of the main character. Yes, I was very impressed by the growth we see in Esperanza from beginning to end; but the character who really captured my heart was Isabel. Though only eight-years-old, Isabel was so full of wisdom, curiosity, and hope that I, as the reader, felt it was contagious. Though born to a life of poverty, and harboring an insatiable curiosity about Esperanza's spoiled prior life, Isabel never once projects jealousy; rather, she is proud and grateful of her upbringing. Both selfless and determined, Isabel is a true shining star in the story - showing Esperanza how to do things for herself, and giving her the confidence to be the person she grows into as the story continues. Without Isabel's presence, I truly don't think I would have enjoyed this story as much as I did.
As a new elementary teacher, I feel that this book would be most easily understood and enjoyed by students in fifth grade. Not only does it provide a wondrous story that is easy for numerous students to relate to; it also opens the door for deeper discussions regarding the concepts of racism, class, immigration, and even empathy. This would be a fabulous resource for a cross-curricular lesson with history/social studies or even writing.

NGL, I am so tired of pinks rn; but this cutie is in a league of its own.
Mornington Terrace is a haute hot pink creme that was made for all of the spring things! During application I was surprised to see that this one was super thin on coat one; but thickened up to the perfectly plump opacity you see here by coat two. Staying power is utterly incredible - I've been wearing this one for 7 days now with nary a chip or tipwear. Natch!

NOTD: OPI Nail Lacquer Collection in In the Cable Car-Pool Lane
Ooh ladies, this shade is serving!
In the Cable Car-Pool Lane is a perfect plum purple crelly with reddish undertones that is a true stunner to look at. This one would make a decadent jelly sandwich color {think summer picnics!}; but it is every bit as brilliant flying solo! Yes, it can come across as slightly bald or sheer, but I preferred it that way as it it allowed for the plummy parts to shine through. If you prefer it darker, however, just add another coat. Formula was a dream {no flurting with cuticles wth this beauty}; and there was zero staining upon removal. Loves it!

BOOK REVIEW: Murder at the Beacon Bakeshop {A Beacon Bakeshop Mystery Book 1} by Darci Hannah
After catching her fiance, and rising celebrity chef, Jeffery Plank, in the arms of his pastry chef, Mia Long {on a slab of Himalayan salt, no less!}, thirty-something Wall Street megamind, Lindsey Bakewell, elects to say farewell to the Financial District, packing up her New York City penthouse, and Newfoundland pooch, Wellington {aka Welly}, and fleeing to her childhood vacation destination of Beacon Harbor, Michigan.
The wealthy daughter of an ex-model mother, and a Wall Street wiz father {who moonlights as a baker}, Lindsey has inherited beauty, brains, and baking ability - the latter of which she plans on using to open a bakery and cafe. On a tipsy night alone, Lindsey purchases a fixer-upper lighthouse in idyllic Lake Michigan online; and before she knows it, her new life path is set in motion. However, looks can be deceiving; and Lindsey soon realizes that she has her work cut our for her in getting her new home in tip-top shape for the big bakeshop grand opening.
Fast forward six months, and Lindsey's opening day has arrived - coinciding perfectly with Memorial Day Weekend. As the shop is bombarded with supportive neighbors and legion of influencer and Lindsey's BFF, Kennedy Kapoor, fans alike; it is crashed by an equal amount of haters in the form of local protestor Fiona Dickel and her cronies, and...Mia and Jeffery, here to exact revenge. As things get physical {we're talking flying pastry, stolen americanos, and loads of shoving}, Lindsey's hunky neighbor and resident love interest, Rory Campbell {who happens to be acting as her barista for the day}, takes Mia outside where she promptly collapses, and later dies. When it's determined that cyanide poisoning was the cause of death, Lindsey's shop is closed down indefinitely. Now she's made solving the mystery her mission; but it may just be the death of her.
Oh, how I wanted to love this one, as I adore a good culinary mystery; but right out the gate Darci Hannah's Murder at the Beacon Bakeshop takes a downward turn due to the timeline. Timeline leaps can brilliantly work in the Marvel and DC verses; but in a mystery novel? Absolutely not. Those six months that were completely jumped over were pivotal for understanding and getting to know Lindsey's new community and neighbors, and how they vibe with one another - especially when you're talking about the first book in a new series where you have no background information from prior installments to go on. Not to mention showing us why, precisely, Mia and Jeffery have a score to settle with Lindsey - because obvs it can't just be a breakup. Forgoing this was confusing, and set the tone for frustration as a reader.
That aside, I can't say that I ever warmed up to any of the characters. I found both Lindsey and Kennedy to be a little immature for their late-thirties age {repeatedly referring to a police officer as Officer Cutie-Pie and using social media to drag someone through the mud}; while the insta-romance with Rory Campbell felt unnatural. Not to mention the introduction of a possible ghost haunting the lighthouse and communicating with Lindsey came off as a little too hokey and ridiculous to believe. I did have a soft spot for Welly; however, he alone could not save the story. Womp womp. Had the timeline jump not taken place, I honestly feel as if I could have warmed up to the characters and locale enough to stick around for book two - unfortunately, it did not; therefore, I won't be returning to the Beacon Bakeshop.

'Tis the season for girly shimmers! Y'all, I live for shimmers during the winter season and this one is so. good.
Metallic Composition is a romantic rose gold shimmer that literally screams ice-skating-and-cocoa-in-the-park date, amiright?! The formula here is so brill! It's not streaky, it applies flawlessly, and I didn't see a single chip or signs of wear for all of the 8 days that I wore it. It even survived helping 140 second graders make thumbprint turkeys, and that's saying something. Grab this one fast ladies!
