ZOYA Beachy Brights Nail Polish Collection 2023 Swatches + Review

NGL neons don't typically garner my affections, but when I opened ZOYA's Beachy Brights & Gelie Base Bundle I was in awe. Babes, this collection is stunning, with a variety of shades to please every polished princess. All 6 of these shades dry matte; however, you are seeing them here with top coat to bring on the shine because matte and I don't love each other. Side note: I did not use underwear {white polish} as a base for any of these shades; but doing so may amplify the neon. Just saying. Now let's move on to the swatches!

Avani is a Bright Lemon Lime Green Creme. Can I just say that we need more nail colors like this one?! For reals though! Avani is a bright lemon lime green creme that caught my eye the second I opened my ZOYA package. If you love unconventional brights you're going to adore it as well! Avani is slightly darker IRL than photographs; but every bit as playful. This one is so much fun for bringing a touch of the tropics to your tips! And the formula is supercalifragifab so total win! This is 2 coats.

Yohanna is an Ultra-Bright Knockout Pink Creme. In honor of Barbie hitting theaters next month, I had to pull this bad boy out for a little show and tell. Yohanna is an ultra-bright knockout pink creme that is giving all of the Barbie vibes! Ladies, this color...I am obsessed! I'm not even a pink polish person, but this shade is simply sending me! Formula here was brilliant! It applied smoothly and dried ridiculously fast! This is one of my top picks for summer 2023 - and an absolute essential if you're looking to channel your inner Barbie! This is 2 coats.

Soraya is an Ultra-Bright Fuschia Creme. Purple is unquestionably a fall color; but let's take a moment to appreciate how utterly perfect this bad boy is for summer! Soraya is an ultra-bright fuschia creme that brings all of the tropical vacay meets party vibes. This one is phenomenal! First, these pics were taken 3 days after application and they look flawless. Second, Soraya is a OCW - yes! Ladies, you need to get this one! This is 1 coat.

Pluto is a Carolina Blue Creme. Ooh babes I love me a good bright blue polish, and this beauty goes hard! I love this one so much because it's playful, flirty, and fun - and just feels splendiferous for summer. This one is perfect for a matching mani/pedi - obsessed! This is 2 coats.

Alora is a Bright Cranberry Creme. We are now entering summer-into-fall transition shades. Alora is a bright cranberry creme that screams almost autumn. Out of all of the shades in the Beachy Brights collection, this one does the least for me because I'm just not a fan of red/cranberry shades, and this falls into that category. That said, the formula for Alora is magnificent. It wasn't a OCW like I thought it would be; but application was seamless, and there was no staining, so I consider that a win. This is 2 coats.

Tink is an amaranth magenta microshimmer that is flirty and flashy {just like the fairy she's named after}. The formula here is super easy to work with - it dries fast and builds so nicely. Even better, it doesn't stain, or pose the type of removal probs seen with your typical glitter. If you're looking for something playful, this is definitely it!

OPI Me Myself and OPI Spring '23 Nail Lacquer 4-Piece Swatches + Review

I have been ignoring OPI this year, so obvi I had to grab their Me Myself and OPI Spring '23 set when I spotted it. Truth? It's not my favorite of theirs in recent years; but a couple of the colors really grabbed me, and I'm positive that you'll find something to love to!

NFTease Me is a Turquoise Creme. Colors like this send me - they are so good! NFTease Me is a turquoise creme that looks mint in the bottle, light blue in pictures, and reads more as a dusty turquoise IRL. This one is beautiful but not as bright as expected on the nail; that said, the formula is fab! I did notice that tipwear could have been a little bit better; but overall this is a beauty for the summer! This is 2 coats.

Spring Break the Internet is a Hot Pink Microshimmer. Barbie nails coming through! Spring Break the Internet is a hot pink microshimmer that invokes all of the Barbie feels. NGL, though pink is my favorite color, I was not feeling this shade because I'm not the biggest fan of microshimmer, and the wear time was horrible! This one started chipping in less than a day, and required multiple touch-ups throughout the week that I wore it, which is no bueno. Not a fave. Womp womp. This is 3 coats.

Silicon Valley Girl is a Tangerine Orange Creme. Is it even summer if you don't have at least one orange nail color in your arsenal?! Pink in Bio is a light pink creme that almost looks like a stark white, but has a softer, feminine touch that makes it less harsh. NGL, this one is not unique to the polish game; however, the formula, which is ultra-buildable and streak-free, definitely sets it apart from similar shades. Love this for spring and summer manis and pedis - it will def enhance your tan! This is 2 coats.

I actually wore this one for Autism Awareness Week, and it was a total hit; but I have to recommend it for summer because it just gives off those vacay vibes, amiright?!

Sipsey is a red-toned amber microshimmer that is so TDF I can't. NGL, I thought this one would be more saturated in color due to how dark it is in the bottle; however, it applies much more sheer than I anticipated. Plus side: it builds beautifully to a deep opacity that is so lush. If you're looking for a red-inspired shade for summer this bad boy is it!

Terra is a Light Amethyst Purple Microshimmer. Maybe I'm microshimmered out, but I just wasn't in love with this color. Womp womp. Terra is a light amethyst purple microshimmer that flashes pink and is super pretty, don't get me wrong. My qualm with it is that it applies very sheer {I legit could have used a third coat!}, and by week's end there was a lot of chipping - despite the fact that I didn't use my hands anymore than usual. Highly recommend if you love the color; but don't expect long-term wear - it's more like a 3 days and you're done shade. This is 2 coats.

Marie is a Violet Microshimmer. Don't mind me, I'm over here swooning over how lush this lacquer shade is! Marie is a vibrant violet microshimmer that brings on all of the summer vibes! Though I typically associate purple polish shades with fall, there is a brightness to this beauty that just creates summer feels! The formula here was so good - applying smoothly and drying in moments! If you love a good purple, this is the perfect one for this time of year! This is 2 coats.

When I tell you that I have never had so many compliments on my nails as I have while I was wearing this bad boy, I am not lying.

Tinkerbell is a flirty spring green creme that is bright, beautiful, and positively perfect for the season! With a layer of underwear {white nail polish}, I think that this shade could possibly turn neon; but look at the level of brightness without that addition! My kindergartners were so mesmerized by this shade {plus it was perfect for St. Patrick's Day}. Highly, highly recommend - the color plus formula is incredible!

BOOK REVIEW: Catwoman: Soulstealer {DC Icons Series} by Sarah J. Maas

Their goals were so much larger than financial profit. No, the League dealt in power—the sort that could alter countries, alter the world. The smart criminals were the ones who got out of their way. The smartest were those who bowed."
NGL, I had Sarah J. Maas' Catwoman: Soulstealer {DC Icons Series} on my Amazon wishlist for like four years before finally purchasing it, and within a few chapters, all I could ask myself was "What took me so long?" Y'all, this book is good, and brings a whole new origin story to Catwoman. Admittedly, I am more of a Marvel fan myself, but the representations of characters such as Poison Ivy, Luke Fox, and even Harley Quinn do a lot to capture your interest while reading, making you empathize with their vulnerabilities, and see them for more than the villains and/or heroes we know them as. I legit thought this would be a one and done type of deal for reading, but after finishing this one, I can honestly say that I'm looking forward to exploring the rest of the DC Icons Series.

Seventeen-year-old Selina Kyle would do anything to protect her younger sister, Maggie, whose lungs are failing due to cystic fibrosis. In fact, it's her sisters medical bills that inspired her to join Gotham City's legendary girl gang, the Leopards. Each night she takes to Gotham's slums to steal, street fight, and earn her spots {badges of honor, if you will}. It's not the ideal situation; but as long as Selina is able to keep a roof over her and Maggie's heads, and stop Social Services from discovering that their drug-addled mother has been missing for months, she considers her sitch a win. Until everything comes crashing down, and she's offered the opportunity of a lifetime: Maggie will be adopted by a well-to-do family and given the necessary medical treatment, as long as Selina ghosts Gotham, and joins the League of Assassins abroad. For Selina, it's a no-brainer.

Fast forward a few years, and Gotham is introduced to Selina Kyle's new persona: the blonde, European-bred, wealthy Holly Vanderhees. Now armed with years of training with the League of Assassins, not to mention a super suit that essentially transforms her into Catwoman; Holly is ready to take Gotham by storm - and with Batman away on business, the city is hers. What she wasn't expecting, however, is that Batman's protege-meets-partner, Batwing, is on the scene - and closer than she expected. While some would take such a presence as a sign to vacate the premises, Holly sees it as a challenge, teaming up with Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn to take down Gotham's elite.

Though Holly returned to Gotham with a mission in mind, for the first time in her life, she finds herself forming connections with people who push her to let her walls down. Like the handsome Luke Fox, who happens to live in the penthouse next-door; to the sweet Poison Ivy who was used and left to deal with unwanted abilities after an experiment gone wrong; even to the broken Harley Quinn, who has allowed a lifetime of familial abuse to make her chase after the cold-hearted and incredibly violent {not to mention psychopathic} Joker. With so many managing to enter her heart, Holly starts to see that she is a good person {who does bad things sometimes}, and begins to question her past decisions.

This is not your typical Catwoman origin story. It is very different from anything that I have seen before, and that's, perhaps, what makes it so incredible. This is Catwoman with heart. Within these pages you see Selina/Holly/Catwoman grow exponentially from street rat to, for lack of better comparison, Robin Hood. She has a conscience; she does not really want to hurt anyone; and she's someone that you can't help but to root for. That said, her light is almost stolen by Poison Ivy who is just a fire character. While I've always loved Catwoman, Poison Ivy has never been on my radar, but she was incredible within this book, and I seriously need an origin story about her like yesterday. Bottom Line: Whether you're a superhero/Marvel/DC fan or not, this one will put you in your feels.

NOTD: ZOYA y2k Holiday 2022 Nail Lacquer Collection in Tamiah

Weird but true: grape nail colors always give me spring picnic vibes! So random...I know, I know.

Tamiah is a grape holo jelly that is one of those wear whenever shades that just works regardless of season or occasion. As compared to the other two shades in this trio, Sparrow and Malana, I found that the color of Tamiah was more saturated, so it only required two coats as opposed to three; NBD tbh, but it seemed worth mentioning. Definitely a shade that fits with the intergalactic vibes that seem to be trending for 2023.

Another day, another gray.

Crystal is a gray creme that I would call bray due to its ever so slight brown-meets-lavender undertones, but I don't think that bray is a thing, so here we are. Y'all, this one has an incredible lifespan. Cooking, cleaning, crafting...it survives them all with no tipwear or chips. Crystal is darker than the elephant gray of Abigail {also from this collection}, so if you like grays you may want to grab both. Just saying.

BOOK REVIEW: You'll Be the Death of Me by Karen McManus

I read Karen McManus' One of Us Is Lying back in 2018, and found it okay {at the time I believe I rated it 3-stars}; but I wasn't intrigued enough to return for its sequel, One of Us Is Next, despite the fact that it was adapted into a TV show {which I have never seen}. Nevertheless, when I saw You'll Be the Death of Me featured during a Kindle eBook sale, I thought I'd give it a whirl. After all, a comparison to Ferris Bueller's Day Off is highly motivating, amiright? Unfortunately, the similarities between the two began and ended at two guys and a girl. Y'all, I trudged through this book; and, in hindsight, wish I would have put it aside sooner as opposed to reading it almost in its entirety because it. was. bad.

There was a time back in junior high when Ivy, Cal, and Mateo were besties. A simpler time. A time when they were unexpectedly tossed together based on proximity during a boring school field trip. When they eloped through a back door, and shared the Best Day Ever! This, of course, was before Ivy had to start competing with her uber smart baby bro, Daniel. Before Mateo bailed on Ivy after a shared kiss, which resulted in Ivy remaining boyfriend-less for the entirety of high school. Before Mateo's mom lost Spare Me due to a freak accident. Before Cal became a shell of his former self. Before the three of them started keeping life-changing secrets from one another...

But enough about the past, let's fast forward to the present. Type A Ivy is having a no-good-very-bad-day due to the fact that class clown, Brian 'Boney' Mahoney, bested her in the Student Council Election, claiming her rightful place as President. Today, Boney will officially take office, and Ivy is so not here for it. Cal, on the other hand, was just blown off by his secret sweetheart after schlepping himself 45-minutes out of his way in order to introduce her to the surprisingly mind-blowingly good Cheeto-dusted donuts offered at a niche spot he frequents. And Mateo...he's just tired from the amount of responsibility piling up on him and his cousin, Autumn ever since his mom's diagnosis, and simply needs a break. When the trio bump into each other in the school parking lot, all eager to avoid classes for the day, they decide to ditch and recreate the best day ever - and that's where the fun ends.

After making a beeline for Boston at Cal's persuasion, the group winds up at his illicit girlfriend's art studio {which, btw, is used by her illegally}, where they spot Boney entering the building. Ivy, angry at her election loss, chases after Boney, resulting in Cal and Mateo chasing after her. Before you know it, the three of them have stumbled upon Boney's dead body. After fleeing the scene {because, why not?}, Ivy is identified as a person of interest by police and the three begin their own impromptu investigation into who could be the real killer in an effort to clear Ivy's name before her mother's Awards Ceremony this evening.

If I'm being honest, I have to say, the title of this book is so spot on, because while reading, I truly felt that this book would be the death of me. You'll Be the Death of Me is impossibly boring. I gave it so many chances thinking that it would pick up at some point, but it was terrible. It primarily consists of walking around, whining, driving around, whining, waiting around, whining. In the meantime, the three MC's are on and off at each other's throats, while other insignificant and equally boring characters are introduced.

Oftentimes, you read a book that has boring characters but an interesting plot, or vice versa; but this book did not have any redeeming qualities to speak of - aside from the fact that Ishaan and Zack's YouTube commentary was fairly entertaining {though incredibly brief}. Finally, with 50 pages left I gave up. This will be my final foray into the writing of McManus. I definitely do not recommend.

Who says deep, dark, decadent nail colors are only for fall?

Elowen {tell me I'm not the only one who thinks of a Tolkien fairy when I say that name} is a charming cabernet creme that is spicy and rich and oh-so romantic. This one had such and incredible formula that when I say it practically painted itself I am not kidding. Wear-time was wonderful with this beauty - showing 0 chips or tipwear in a seven day period. Highly recommend for the chillier months or whenever you're craving a little vamp!

NGL, when ZOYA's Toasty Transitional 2023 Collection Nail Lacquer arrived I did a little happy dance, because these 6 shades so perfectly represent the transition from winter to spring, and bring on all of the cozy vibes. With that said, let's jump right in!

Hattie is a Rosy Pink Creme. NGL here, this may be my new, all-time favorite rose. Yes, it is that good!Hattie is a positively perfect rosy pink creme that gives all of the cozy feels for fall/winter, while bringing a spring punch all at the same time! This is probably the first polish that has ever given me a satin vibe {we're talking ever}, which really adds to the girliness. Hattie has one of the best formulas I have used in awhile. Very fast dry; and the wearability is just phenomenal. Highly, highly recommend this cutie! This is 2 coats.

Rae is a Dusty Rose Creme. Let's be honest here: we don't talk about rose nail colors enough. Period. Rae is a decadent dusty rose creme that is giving me allll of the toasty vibes. This is one of those shades that is begging to be paired with oversized sweaters and otk boots {and I am more than happy to oblige}. The formula here was so easy breezy, I literally cannot; and the dry time was instant. This is def one of my new fave ZOYA shades. Buy. It. Now. This is 2 coats.

Abigail is an Elephant Gray Creme. I never think grey for spring; but I am seriously feeling this shade for transitioning from winter. Abigail is an elephant grey creme that is slightly darker in real life. The formula here is flawless - applying smoothly, and drying in minutes. I will say that I am naturally {very} pale, and at times I thought this shade gave me a touch of corpse hands; so it may be more apropos for a tanner complexion. This is 2 coats.

Crystal is a Gray Creme. Another day, another gray. Crystal is a gray creme that I would call bray due to its ever so slight brown-meets-lavender undertones, but I don't think that bray is a thing, so here we are. Y'all, this one has an incredible lifespan. Cooking, cleaning, crafting...it survives them all with no tipwear or chips. Crystal is darker than the elephant gray of Abigail {also from this collection}, so if you like grays you may want to grab both. Just saying. This is 2 coats.

Elowen is a Cabernet Creme. Who says deep, dark, decadent nail colors are only for fall? Elowen {tell me I'm not the only one who thinks of a Tolkien fairy when I say that name} is a charming cabernet creme that is spicy and rich and oh-so romantic. This one had such and incredible formula that when I say it practically painted itself I am not kidding. Wear-time was wonderful with this beauty - showing 0 chips or tipwear in a seven day period. Highly recommend for the chillier months or whenever you're craving a little vamp! This is 2 coats.

Ora is a Dark Blackberry Creme. Vampy for spring should totes be a thing because I am loving it! Ora is a dark blackberry creme that would be lush for fall into winter, but I'm actually digging the hint of dark for spring to summer manis. The formula for this one is super easy to work with - it doesn't gravitate to cuticles, and builds to a rich opacity easily. It does require 2 coats to avoid VNL, but they are fast dry and flawless. Highly recommend for year-round manis or pedis! This is 2 coats.

BOOK REVIEW: The Screaming Staircase {Lockwood & Co., 1} by Jonathan Stroud

"When you go out hunting wicked spirits, it’s the simple things that matter most. The silvered point of your rapier flashing in the dark; the iron filings scattered on the floor; the sealed canisters of best Greek Fire, ready as a last resort… But tea bags, brown and fresh and plentiful, and made (for preference) by Pitkin Brothers of Bond Street, are perhaps the simplest and best of all."
Had it not been for Netflix I likely would not have ever learned of Jonathan Stroud's Lockwood & Co.. And while my attention span lacked the bandwidth to truly get into the show {I lasted 27 minutes}; it was enough to pique my interest into the book series that sparked the television series, which is how The Screaming Staircase {Lockwood & Co., 1} landed on my Kindle. While lengthy and oftentimes slower-paced than I anticipated, I would be lying if I said that I wasn't thoroughly engrossed in this tale - from the witty banter between quickly-adored characters to the eerie yet novel premise and gritty, noir-inspired feel of the setting. Will I be back for the sequel, The Whispering Skull {Lockwood & Co., 2}? Absolutely!

For 50 years Britain has been ruled by The Problem: a horrifying epidemic of ghosts and hauntings. Not what you were expecting, amiright? To combat The Problem, a series of Psychic Investigations Agencies have popped up around the country - all with the apparent capabilities of destroying the deadly apparitions. One of those agencies being Lockwood & Co. - a ramshackle organization run by a mere child out of Number 35, Portland Street. Though it seems bizarre to have the teenage, yet charistmatic Anthony Lockwood heading his own firm {small as it may be}, it is quite fitting considering that the only ones with the ability to exterminate said spirits are children and teenagers harboring the psychic ability to sense ghosts. Lockwood being one of those individuals; his deputy, George Cubbins, resident researcher and reader, being his second. But they need a third to round up their Scooby Gang. Enter Lucy Carlyle.

A talent well beyond her years with a poorly padded resume, Lucy Carlyle escapes to London following a tragic incident with her previous agency. Armed with dual Talents, the ability to both hear voices of the dead and experience memories of the deceased with the mere touch of an object belonging to them, Lucy feels that gaining employment will be a simple matter. Unfortunately, following rejections from all of the top, adult-run agencies, she winds up on the doorstep of her last hope: Lockwood & Co. Taken on immediately, Lucy moves into the 221B Baker Street-inspired office/living quarters, working and breakfasting alongside Lockwood and Cubbins day in and day out, while learning very little about Lockwood himself. Where are his parents? How did he come to own Number 35, Portland Street? Why does he never speak of his past? These are all questions Lucy longs to ask but is too polite to do so.

When the members of Lockwood & Co. are fingered as the irresponsible cause of a home burning down during an investigation in which they were ill-prepared for, the agency finds themselves in a bind. Summoned to pay an exorbitant amount of money which they simply don't have, the Lockwood & Co. trio is forced to take on the Combe Carey Hall investigation. Known for being one of England's most haunted houses, Combe Carey Hall is a job that has left members of more prestigious agencies dead - it is also Lockwood & Co.'s last chance at redemption, and so Lockwood, Cubbins, and Carlyle resolve to take on the so-called Red Room and Screaming Staircase. Whether they survive the experience, however, remains to be seen.

Ghost stories don't typically reel me in, but a good mystery is a simple way to my heart, so The Screaming Staircase quickly won me over with its Holmes-esque atmosphere kissed with paranormal charm. The true winner of this tale, however, are the characters. Believe me when I say that the Lockwood trio is Top Tier. We're talking mind-blowing chemistry, banter, and brilliance that is the true backbone of this story. Lockwood is captivating, what with his air of mystery, and level-headed calm; whereas Cubbins brings a laugh courtesy of his slobbish tendencies and peculiar quirks. Lucy is perhaps the most dry of the three, seeming more sensible, yet oftentimes ever so slightly boring. That said, she is a worthy compatriot to round out the trio and keep them more accountable for their curiosities.

Though I will admit that there were times that, at over 400 pages, this story did drag at different moments; as the first book in a series, this is most certainly not a dealbreaker, as it is setting the foundation for future books. For that reason, I have every intention of snagging book 2, The Whispering Skull, as I am eager to see what my favorite trio of paranormal detectives are up to - and perhaps delve deeper into Lockwood's private past.

BOOK REVIEW: The Elephant Girl by James Patterson & Ellen Banda-Aaku

Having been a follower of Sheldrick Wildlife Trust for years, I was highly intrigued by James Patterson & Ellen Banda-Aaku's The Elephant Girl when I learned of its publication, as it was billed as being inspired by true events, with a strong focus on wildlife conservation and the serious issue that is poaching. Though I can't say that The Elephant Girl is as strong as The One and Only Ivan, Pax, or Because of Winn-Dixie {all books that I have read and loved over the years} as there was a certain je ne sais quoi missing within its pages; I would recommend it to readers who have enjoyed those very stories as they are all character-driven, bringing some very charming creatures and human counterparts to the forefront - not to mention a great deal of information on poaching, corruption amidst park rangers, and the amount of strength needed to rehabilitate these beautiful animals.

Life has not been easy for Maasai twelve-year-old Jama Anyango since her Baba {father} passed away four years ago. In that time, Jama's mother has had to invest all of her time and energy into making sandals to sell in order to make ends meet. Though the sandals are works of beauty, and prized by all who purchase {mainly tourists}, the craft takes much out of Jama's mother, leaving Jama on her own quite frequently. Though Jama does not mind the solitude; the people within her Kenyan village are quick to comment on it in a negative light. You see, following the death of her Baba, Jama's mother elected to stay single - taking over the family business and proving that a husband is not necessary for survival. It is a mindset that has changed Jama in ways that not everyone in the village can understand - nor is it their business to.

Jama desires something more than marriage and family - she longs for education, the ability to make her own decisions, and the same freedom as boys. Unfortunately, it is this personal change that leaves her withdrawing from her best friend, Nadira, and the other girls in the village, as they are only interested in boys and marriage; in turn, the other girls and Nadira begin to exclude her from gatherings - isolating Jama and making her feel alone. After one such occasion, Jama begins escaping to a nearby watering hole outside of the boundaries her mother has set for her. It is her quiet place; her secret place. It is also where she develops a kinship with the elephants. There is Shaba, the leader, along with Bawa, Lulu, Modoc, Loasa, Tabia; and then, one day, she witnesses Shaba's birth of little Mbegu. Jama quickly develops a deep bond with Mbegu, and begins visiting more frequently - which is how she discovers a poacher in their midst.

Recently, the village has welcomed Solo Mungu, an employee with the Kenya Wildlife Service, and the Head Ranger responsible for ceasing poaching practices seen within the Naibunga Conservatory - land which borders Jama's village. It is Solo Mungo's son, Leku, who the village girls are swooning over, but whom Jama views as a local bully. With Solo Mungo in the village, Jama is confused as to why a poacher would be so boldly present in the area - until late one night she finds a connection {not to mention a newfound ally}. Following the death of one of the elephants, the peaceful creatures become agitated, resulting in an unexpected stampede that ends in tragedy - forcing Jama and Mbegu, bruised and bloodied, to flee and embark on a new journey in a place different than they have ever known before.

When I say that this is a melancholy book, it is not an exaggeration. The Elephant Girl is steeped in sorrow; and while it was easy to finish within a few hours, it was difficult not to keep thinking about it. There is so much heartache that pours from the pages; but, as we near the conclusion, there is happiness - kind of like the rainbow after the rain. Though I predicted that I would never grow to so much as like Leku, he manages to redeem himself multiple times within the story. But it is Jama, both lovable and relatable in her plight of self-discovery and growth, along with her elephant family, who are the true stars. The sacrifices made, the dangers faced, the changes required...these were handled eloquently - as were the scenes starring the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. I do have two qualms though.

First, I found that the pacing was not always fluid - it oftentimes felt rushed and haphazardly put together, which detracted quite a bit from the enjoyment factor. Second, though The Elephant Girl is billed as being inspired by true events, there is nothing listed in the back of the book indicating the true events that inspired it; and countless time spent Googling for such information yielded zero results. This was disappointing to me as a reader who enjoys learning more about the inspiration behind a book such as this - but maybe that's just me. Overall, though it had its flaws, I did enjoy the amount of information and heart compacted within this tale, and recommend it to animal lovers - especially if you favor elephants.

BOOK REVIEW: Chain of Gold {The Last Hours, # 1} by Cassandra Clare

I first discovered Cassandra Clare in 2012, when I began reading The Mortal Instruments - a series which I could not get enough of, and devoured in far too short a time. Somehow, once finishing that six book series, I read nothing more from Clare - until recently, when Chain of Gold {The Last Hours, # 1} popped up during a Kindle sale. And thank goodness that it did because it was spectacular, and has made me question why I didn't keep up with Clare over the years. Chain of Gold is a gut-wrenching, soul-shaking introduction to an action-packed trilogy brimming with Shadowhunter goodness set in the early 1900s, and driven by an impeccable cast of characters. Mark my words...you'll be purchasing the sequel, Chain of Iron {The Last Hours, # 2}, after finishing just the first chapter. Trust.

As a born and bred Shadowhunter, Cordelia Carstairs has been trained as a warrior to battle demons since she was just a tyke; but no training could have prepared her for the demons found within her very own family. When her father is implicated as being the mastermind behind a terrible crime that resulted in the deaths of many, Cordelia and her older brother, Alastair, along with their mother, are sent off to London to save face and, hopefully, prevent the ruination of their beloved family. While Cordelia's mother has dreams only of marrying Cordelia off to a well-to-do family before rumors of her father's supposed indiscretions reach the gritty yet glamorous city, Cordelia's desires lie elsewhere. She is determined to be a hero rather than a housewife; and while she does secretly love James Herondale, a childhood friend who happens to be the brother of her bestie, Lucie, James is promised to another, making him unattainable. At least romantically.

Upon reaching London, Cordelia makes fast work of reconnecting with both James and Lucie - after all, she is destined to be Lucie's parabatai {a lifelong partner bound together by oath, and made to fight together until death}. Once welcomed into their inner circle, she finds herself enshrouded in a shimmering world brimming with ballrooms, secret assignations, and salons overflowing with the supernatural - from mermaids mixing with magicians to vampires interweaving with warlocks. It's an underground far from anything Cordelia has known before; but one that intrigues her and feels like home. And then disaster strikes...

Shortly after making her London debut, the city is devastated by a series of unexplained demon attacks that threaten to shatter Cordelia's world. The typical monsters encountered by Shadowhunters are those that stay hidden by the dark; but this breed is unlike anything encountered before by the Shadowhunter world. These monsters walk freely in daylight, are seemingly impossible to kill, and strike down the unsuspecting with an incurable poison that could quickly make Shadowhunter numbers dwindle. With such a risk on the loose, London is quarantined, stranding Cordelia and her friends in the city. While trapped, however, they discover that they have a connection to a dark legacy - one that provides them with phenomenal powers that come with a price: the cruel penalty of being a hero.

Having not read The Infernal Devices trilogy, this was my first introduction to Will, Tessa, and Jem; however, as they are the adults within this spinoff, my unfamiliarity with them did not hinder my ability to absolutely l-o-v-e each and every character within these pages {barring Grace and Tatiana Blackthorn obvi}, or to seamlessly follow the storyline. Will I go back and read The Infernal Devices after completing The Last Hours? Absolutely! But, for the time being, I am adoring the escapades found within this trilogy. Not to mention the brilliant banter, humor, and dazzling cast of characters Clare has masterfully drawn out.

Cordelia is totally girl crush worthy - she has this Buffy vibe about her that is irresistible. And Anna Lightwood? Her level of cool is beyond. Then there's Matthew and James and Christopher and Thomas and Lucie...all who bring so much to the story with their differing personalities. And, not to be forgotten, Jem {aka Brother Zachariah}. Despite their oddities, I have alwaysalwaysalways been enchanted by the concept of the Silent Brothers, so seeing his interactions with the other characters was incredibly engaging. From start to finish, Chain of Gold was utterly brilliant. I cannot wait to see what adventure lies within the pages of Chain of Iron.
