made for walking

Short films rarely capture my attention; but when they feature a bevy of beautiful Stuart Weitzman boots combined with the presence of Kate Moss strutting along the streets of London to a soundtrack of Nancy Sinatra's These Boots Were Made for Walking {as is the case for Stuart Weitzman's Made for Walking campaign}, I'm basically rendered powerless.

Supermodel + Swingin' Sixties Vibe + Boots = chicest. idea. ever.

Also pertinent...how adorbs is Kate Moss' voice when she speaks at the beginning of the vid?

winter 2013 boot trends to try

When it comes to shoes, I am all about the boots {as most of you already know}.
In my mind, the shoes make or break an outfit; so it's important to choose wisely. 6pm is
one of my favorite sites to seek out new styles and trends {and 6pm Coupon Codes make said styles so much more affordable}.

Currently I'm loving unexpected textures,
color-blocking
, and classic cuts - all of which have been represented on the runway, and
are actually attainable and affordable with UGG Australia Coupons. Here are 5 of my favorite
2013 winter boot trends {and yes, they're all from UGG}.

boot trends

motorcycle: My pick is the UGG Gillspie Tall in Black {also available in Stout}. It's effortlessly cool, and ultra-reminiscent of the Fiorentini + Baker Eternity Boot. $157.50.

shearling: The shearling cuff + button detailing makes the UGG Georgette one of the chicest ways to stay cozy for the cooler months. $124.99.

two-tone: Tommy Hilfiger is responsible for my two-tone crush. He constructs boots that feature some of the most unique blends of textures and styles - case in point, the duck shoe over the knee boot. Bizarre yet bril! The UGG Collection Aldabella in Nevada / Chocolate is a more subdued yet {still} striking take on the trend - perfect for pairing with oversized sweaters this fall / winter. $357.75.

lace & combat: I love a combat boot, so I can't resist the UGG Collection Adela in Black Lace {also available in Dark Brown and Ink}. The buckles and zippers are downright edgy; while the lace detailing adds a seriously unexpected feminine touch. $267.75.

equestrian: The trend that will never go out of style...the equestrian. I like the UGG Channing II in Chestnut {also available in Black Leather} for its antique metal stirrup detail, which is such a unique and irresistible touch. $132.75.

Which boot trend will you be trying for winter 2013?

november crush list!

crush /krəSH/ {noun}
a brief but intense infatuation for someone,
esp. someone unattainable or inappropriate.

My crushes tend to be on somethings as opposed to someones; and since
today is the first day of a new month {my favorite month of the year, to be exact},
it seemed the perfect time to introduce a new series...crush list.
Here's what I'm crushing on for November 2013 babes!

november 2013

1. over the knee boots This year over the knee boots reign in the shoe world {you will hear no complaints from me on that front}. I like a suede style with a second-skin, legging-like fit as I find them to be the most flattering {regardless of your height}, and highly versatile. My top picks are Haider Ackermann's Suede Over-the-Knee Boots and Stuart Weitzman's Highland Stretchy Suede Over-the-Knee Boots.

2. {nail} shades of gray November is typically the time of year when oxblood manis take center stage, but this month I'm loving varied shades of gray. For a charcoal hue with subtle sparkle there's Essie's Cashmere Bathrobe; if you want to take the high-fashion route, there's the fiercely fabulous Essie Power Clutch; and for a lighter, concrete-esque color there's Essie's Chinchilly.

3. baseball jackets I have never been to a sporting event in my life; but I have an inexplicable infatuation with varsity / baseball jackets. They posses the same type of effortless cool vibe of a motorcycle jacket - in a sassy, sportier fashion. Double points to this Lovers + Friends Can't Wait Wildcat Baseball Jacket for the inclusion of a ferosh animal motif!

4. faux flannel Plaids are a fall staple that I rarely indulge in because I don't love the feel of flannels on my skin; so I am swooning over the new faux flannels that have been popping up in stores. The construction is chiffon-like, and slightly oversized, so you can wear them belted as a tunic over leggings, or free and flowy with skinnies. My pick is Target's Xhilaration Sheer Equipment Top in Mint Everest and Apple Red.

5. cable knit berets These are more fashion than a means of staving off the cold; but since I live in SoCal that's perfectly okay. I find the chunky aesthetic of these Sole Society Cable Knit Berets irresistible - it's a little bit funky, a little bit slouchy, and just perfect for adding an extra bit of oomph to your daily looks. The Grey is my personal favorite; but I know that I would get quite a bit of use out of the Ivory, as well.

What's on your November Crush List?

A pastel knit easily morphs from spring staple to fall essential {just look to the runway for confirmation}. Opt for one in a pale pink hue {very winter apropos} with a slouchy fit, styling it alongside a flippy, printed cotton skirt to make it more playful. A crystal collar necklace adds an air of sophistication; while mixed metallic in the form of rose-gold oxfords and a silver snakeskin clutch keep the entire look unexpected yet eye-catching. NOTD: mark Nailed It Trend Mini Nail Lacquer Duo {Gleam Scene + Tuxedo}

'Tis the season for nail duos and today I have another fabulous set for you featuring Gleam Scene {sparkling gold} and Tuxedo {high-shine black}. These two shades come from mark's Nailed It Trend Mini Nail Lacquers Duo; and are minis that contain enough polish for about 10 manicures / pedicures in each bottle. This is a gorgeous duo for the holidays - especially if you love nail art, as they can be worn together {as seen here}; but look just as glam when worn individually.

Two coats of mark Nailed It Trend Mini Nail Lacquer in Gleam Scene.

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of gold nail polish, and tend to use it solely as an accent or for nail art {which is likely what I will be using this shade for in the future}. That said, if you are a fan of gold polish, Gleam Scene is a great one for one very big reason: no brushstrokes.

If you're familiar with shades like this {semi-frosts}, you know that brushstrokes tend to run rampant in the formulas - that did not happen here. Gleam Scene goes on smooth, brushstroke-free, and fully opaque in two coats. The formula is slightly thick; but as long as you rub the brush on the rim of the polish bottle before application, very easy to work with. This is a great shade if you love the look of a neutral nail with a kick.

One coat of mark Nailed It Trend Mini Lacquer in Tuxedo.

You may remember Tuxedo from my halloween-perfect black polishes post last week. While Tuxedo is a shiny shade, the true pop of the dark, vampy color comes after you apply topcoat {it's completely necessary in this case}.

The formula here is thinner than that of Gleam Scene; but, as long as you apply with a slightly-heavy hand you can achieve full opacity in one coat. I had a little bit of a problem with this color trying to pool in my cuticles; but the glossiness and smoothness fully made up for that.

kitty cravings

kitty
My relationship with leopard print could best be classified as love / hate. In small doses {read: shoes, sweaters, bags...} I heart it; overwhelming amounts, however, wind up in my personal loathe arena. Burberry Prorsum did all. things. perf. for their Fall 2013 runway show. Printed pencil skirts coupled with camel-colored chunky knits, oversized mix print clutches contrasting leopard with plaid, trench coats sporting leopard sleeves...it was a collection that proved just how sophisticated and enticing the print could be when done right - and gave me a serious craving for all things kitty. Here are a few of my favorite printed pieces {Clockwise from Top Right}:

{what to wear} the over the knee boot

“One must always have one’s boots on and be ready to go.”
Michel de Montaigne

otk

Of course you want your attire to be intimidating and fierce; but as the wearer one does not want to feel intimidated by their own foot accoutrement. Mais non; you simply want to intimidate others. But I digress; I don’t blame one for feeling frightened at the mere contemplation of over the knee boots. I counted myself amongst the fearful up until a few short months ago when I ordered a pair of knee-highs which, incidentally, went a good four inches over my knee. Apparently they were knee-high boots for the tall; over the knee boots for the petite.

The aesthetic of such a gorgeous getup left me in awe mixed with alarm. How I, an individual standing no more than five-foot-one-and-a-half-inches could rock such a look in the same fashion as Karlie Kloss and Chanel Iman; towering goddesses strutting their stuff in these very same designs on the runway, seemed unfathomable – even for me, a person willing to take risks for the sake of style.

Those boots sat untouched, simply being oohed and aahed over in my mind for a full three weeks before I finally worked up the courage to wear them out of my palatial bedroom. And once I did…I was addicted. The truth of the matter is, while over the knee boots retain the ability to tantalize and terrify both the wearer and the viewer, styling them is an uncomplicated undertaking with the power to revamp your wardrobe in the blink of an eye; as long as you know exactly how to work with them, as opposed to against them.

otk

{hues, textures, and materials, oh my!} I’ll be the first to admit that I have a slight obsession with patent leather due to the fact that it’s slick and shiny. While these two traits are fabulous for those divine new Julianne Hough for Sole Society 'Whitney' Pumps, when it comes to over the knee boots these are two things that you want to steer clear of.

Hues, textures and materials are essentials to consider when selecting the over the knee offering of your dreams, for they are the determinants in how you present yourself, and how others perceive you. Take into consideration that height is the true crème de la crème of the over the knee boot; it need not compete with a flashy color, reptilian texture, or embellishments galore.

Go for subtlety. Stick to suede and natural leather pieces in neutral tones such as blacks, browns, or, if you feel a deep desire to channel your inner Serena van der Woodsen, grays – these shades and materials will work with anything and everything lurking within your closet; in addition to complementing your wardrobe in the most mesmerizing of ways.

“I’d like to die with my boots on.”
Daniel Berrigan

{height or no height} Be aware of the fact that you are already lengthening your look with the height of the over the knee boot; therefore, don’t feel that you must search for a sky-high heel in order to do these stunners justice. In fact, I recommend a flat boot for the sheer fact that they are more wearable in an abundance of situations – from job interviews to girls’ nights; and come across as more sophisticated than shocking.

otk 3

I think of Stuart Weitzman as an over the knee boot genius. For the girl who wants something understated, he has the celebrity-adored 5050 Flat Boots in Black Leather, and for the lovely looking to proffer a bit of attitude, there are the 50/50 Leopard-Print Suede Over-the-Knee Boot in Smoke. These are both paradigmatic models of what the perfect over the knee boot should look like in either venue, be it flat or heeled.

If you should opt for a heel, seek a chunky one, as opposed to a stiletto to avoid looking too risqué - the Stuart Weitzman Highland Suede Over the Knee Boots in Black is a great example. A chunkier heel neutralizes the silhouette and comes across as more classy and chic than outrageous and over the top.

{welcoming widths} After the success with my first pair of over the knee boots, I decided to spring for another in a similar style, which I purchased online. They were absolutely gorgeous once they arrived at my front door, but there was one noticeable difference between the two – the circumference.

Looking at the height of the shaft and heel is like second nature to us seasoned shoppers, but we often neglect to learn what the width of the leg opening is. Tawdry checkout stand tabloids {which I’m slightly addicted to} go on and on about thigh spillage, a term coined to describe the loose skin that hangs over the top of over the knee boots – i.e. an expression that you most definitely don’t want to hear used in reference to you.

otk 4

To avoid such a tight fit, make sure to decide what look you’re going for beforehand and purchase accordingly. Do you want something that fits in the same fashion as a legging, like Sam Edelman's Kayla Over the Knee Boot; or do you want a slouchy style that will let you move and groove like Steve Madden's Caliko Over the Knee Boot? Take into consideration what you’ll be wearing with these boots – skinny jeans, bare legs, tights…and slip them on with such ensembles before buying; it’s definitely better than realizing ten minutes before your hot date that the boots of your dreams are incapable of being worn over your seductive skinnies!

“Beware of fishing for compliments – you might come up with a boot.”
Carol Weston

{back to basics} I am of the belief that when wearing over the knee boots, the shoe should be the focal point of your look du jour; thus, it is your job to ensure that the pieces surrounding them are working to complement their fabulousness, as opposed to competing with it. Lock your bold prints and bright colors away, if only for a fleeting period of time – over the knee boots work best when married with monochromatic hues.

Pair black pieces with ebony-toned tights; don grays with dark wash skinny jeans; wear brown suede offerings with skintight, chocolate leggings. Not only will your footwear steal the show; but the solid colors will make you appear more lithe and lanky than you already are, and no girl can resist that!

otk 5

{perfect proportions} The main reason I avoided my over the knee boots for so long was that I was clueless as to how I should style them. Once I actually began to try them out with different looks, however, I realized that they easily worked with most of my wardrobe. The key thing to remember is that you don’t want to appear as if you’re on your way to a costume party; thus, you must be fully aware of your proportions.

Form-fitting or tunic-like sweater dresses that fall just below the derriere look gorgeous when worn alongside flat over the knee boots with a legging fit; while boyfriend cardigans, cropped blazers or motorcycle jackets, and even plain t-shirts worn with leggings or skinny jeans can dress such footwear down and make it more playful and fun.

A word of wisdom…over the knee boots do have the potential to make one – especially shorter girls – look slightly heavy about the rear if not careful. Rely on accessories like a statement necklace or perky scarf to detract attention from your posterior, and keep you feeling confident.

“Having a few pairs of boots, which can go with a variety of lengths, is really functional.”
Valerie Steele

It was Franklin Delano Roosevelt who said, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” Hold fast to his words of wisdom and plunge into the sea of over the knee boots. Mark my words…you won’t regret it!

NOTD: Revlon Nail Art Expressionist in Night & Degas

Revlon Nail Art Expressionist in Night & Degas. One coat of Night {Matte Black}; followed by one coat swipes of Degas {White Crème with a Matte Finish}.

The Revlon Nail Art Expressionist line is actually one that features two colors - one for a base color, and one for nail art. Though nail art isn't typically my thing {due to how difficult it can be to perfect it}; since I was buying this solely for Night {the matte black shade}, I figured I would give it a shot.

First things first...if nail art isn't your forte {i.e. it winds up looking like a hot mess}, you absolutely must invest in the Nail Art Expressionist line. The brush made for nail art is super skinny, so it's simple to create professional-looking lines {or polka dots if that's more your style}.

For every step of this mani I used one coat, and found that the matte finish {no glossiness here} was fast-drying; however, I did experience a few chips at the tip of the nail {an extra coat may have prevented this}.

Personally, I still prefer a single, solid color for manis {like the matte black you see below, which is Night worn on its own}; however, a little nail art can be fun for a change - especially when it's reminiscent of Beetlejuice.

almost famous

I've never felt a deep-rooted desire to be a groupie, or the Almost Famous term...Band-Aid; but having covered the local music scene in my area for the past 7 years, and moonlighting as a music blogger, I have always adored the classic flick. Or, more specifically, the boho chic character Penny Lane {played magnificently by Kate Hudson}. So stumbling upon this 2011 Marie Claire Australia editorial aptly titled Almost Famous? Total dream come true. It epitomizes the free-spirited bohemia that was the 1970s; while showcasing some of my personal favorite looks for fall - floppy fedoras, faux fur outerwear, fringe embellishments...

halloween-perfect black polishes

In honor of the ridiculously fast-approaching holiday known as All Hallows' Eve, I have spent the last month seeking out different black polishes that are kind of perfect if you're looking to have a little Halloween party on your fingers. Check out swatches of my favorites below!

One coat of China Glaze Liquid Leather. High-Shine Black.

This is, without question, the most fabulous black polish I have ever encountered. Everything about this shade was perfect: the formula and consistency {very easy to work with}; the color and shine {fully opaque in one coat, and incredibly glossy even before I applied top coat}; and the staying power {no chips, no tipwear, and, best of all...no staining}. If you're seeking a high-gloss black, this is your best bet. NOTE: ORLY Liquid Vinyl is a great sub if you can't find Liquid Leather.

One coat of Revlon Nail Art Expressionist in Night & Degas. Matte Black.

The Revlon Nail Art Expressionist line is actually one that features two colors - one for a base color, and one for nail art. For this mani, I used only the base color, Night, which is an amazing matte black {on Monday I will show you a full mani using both shades}. This is one of my favorite black polish looks - the mattified color is very chic and unexpected...especially in a noir hue.

Two coats of nails inc. Leather Effect Leather Polish in Noho. Crackled Leather-Like Black.

The two coats needed for this shade are completely fast-drying, and leave just a subtle hint of shine behind {it is mostly matte}. I wore this for days without chips {despite the fact that I wasn't wearing top coat} and it looked gorgeous throughout. For the record, the nails inc. Leather Effect Leather Polish creates more of a crackled leather effect, as opposed to a smooth leather {and that's totally fine with me}; and can also be purchased in the nails inc. Bling It On Kit in Rebel if you want 3D Crystal Skull embellishments - such a perfect touch for Halloween.

One coat of mark Tuxedo from the Nailed It Trend Mini Lacquers - Tuxedo & Gleam Scene Duo. High-Shine Black.

Tuxedo doesn't have as much natural shine as China Glaze's Liquid Leather; however, it really pops once you add top coat. As a mini bottle, the brush is smaller than that of a normal-sized polish, so it requires more strokes; but it still reaches opacity in one {slightly heavy} coat.

Two coats of Sally Hansen Sugar Coat in Lick-O-Rich. Textured Black.

Lick-O-Rich is similar to nails inc.'s Noho; however, it has less shine, and the texture is rougher {a bit like wall spackle, to be honest}. The formula was amazing - even when cooking, the heat didn't cause it to recede or display tipwear. My only issue with this shade is its limited availability. I haven't been able to find it Online; though I've spotted it in drugstores and mass market retailers {such as Target and Wal-Mart}.

NOTD: Sally Hansen Sugar Coat in Pink Sprinkle

Two coats of Sally Hansen Limited Edition Sugar Coat in Pink Sprinkle. Raspberry Jelly Base Packed with Hot Pink Glitter and Golden Red Flakes.

Pink Sprinkle is, in my opinion, the fall version of Jinx from the OPI The Bond Girls Liquid Sand Collection. Where Jinx was summer-bright {though still wearable for fall / winter}; Pink Sprinkle is more autumn-esque in its cranberry / pink-leaning raspberry goodness.

The jelly base is the perfect complement to the blend of hot pink glitter and larger, golden red flakes; while the texture adds depth and richness to the color, making it anything but your ordinary raspberry shade. For me, it's one of those colors that makes you think of picnics and apple picking excursions.

Opacity was perfect in two coats; and the wear-time was incredible. I removed it after 5 days; but experienced 0 chips in that time. A total must if you don't have time for weekly manis - this one will keep you covered.

NOTE: This is a Limited Edition shade. I randomly found it at Target not too long ago, but haven't seen it Online. If you're digging it, definitely pick it up if seen - it won't be around for long.
