Glove at First Sight

I can’t feel my hands, my fingers are practically immobile, and my fingertips are blue. There is an upside, however. Something to remedy the situation, if you will. Gloves!

I haven’t worn gloves since my last stay in New York City . Face it, this is Southern California , why would I even need them? Well…I do. Thus, the time has come to bring a pair of brand spanking new gloves home. I can already picture unwrapping them from their shop box. Slipping them on. Fawning over them. But, let’s not get ahead of ourselves; first I need to make the tough choice. Here are some options...

Betsey Johnson Baby Strip with Ruffles Gloves - $30. Ruffles, enough said.

Lowie Red Fingerless Gloves - $61. I understand that fingerless gloves aren’t the most practical selection as they are, well, fingerless. But who doesn’t want to be the proud owner of a pair of red gloves. Besides, look how sweet the cable knit and bow detail is. Those features alone would keep you warm – at least on the inside!

Ralph Lauren Rugby Fair Isle Wool Gloves – were $65, on sale for $24.99. I don’t think it’s possible to not love fair isle wool gloves, and the fact that these: a) are adorned with beautiful colors – gray, pink, purple, black; b) have little bow ties; c) are longer than your average glove, giving you warmth all the way up to your elbow; and d) have a matching bucket hat and scarf – just in case you want to splurge for a set – make them one of my faves.

Delia’s Cherie Flower Glove – were $12.50, on sale for $5.99. The baby pink. The flower. It’s just so…French.

Aqua Women’s Intarsia Bow Wool Glove - were $68, on sale for $47.60. There’s something so dainty and cute about these, yet completely simple and sophisticated. My only problem would be choosing a color – though I’m favoring the black and white.

These PUMA Fairisle Mitts in Ribbon Red have completely caught my eye – perhaps because they remind me of Valentine’s Day – and at $18 they’re a total steal, but…with these I’d be unable to move my fingers. They would be trapped in a chicly mittened prison that would make me incapable of completing even the simplest of tasks. Therefore, they have made it to the “admire from afar” list. But they’re still adorable!

Decisions, decisions…which would you choose?

Ruby Gloom

It has been raining for five days straight. I'm cold. I'm tired. My throat hurts. My ears hurt. And I'm sitting in front of a computer screen. What I wouldn't give to be lying in front of this warm fire, huddled under a plush plaid blanket, reading Sloane Crosley's I Was Told There'd Be Cake. I don't think there could be a more delicious way to spend a wet and gloomy morning.

Colors of the Caribbean

Maybe the non-stop rain over the past few days has made me long for an island getaway complete with rainbow colors; but I think my craving has more to do with Seventeen magazine's "Road Trip" fashion spread in the March 2009 issue. The fun, funky bohemian looks. The crazy color combos. The chunky necklaces and wedge sandals. Toss me a fruity drink with an umbrella in it, along with a plane ticket to a tropical destination, and I'm ready for the vacation of a lifetime.

Is it just me or have the fashion spreads featured in Seventeen magazine gotten increasingly more clever, creative, and interesting over the past few months?

Since we're on the subject of island getaways, do you plan on embarking upon one for Spring Break?

Fashionista in the Kitchen

Okay, so I just got done making dinner – a delicious sauté of pasta, red peppers, and onions – but I was using the skillet and...ended up with butter splashing onto my clothes. Luckily, I was wearing pajamas, but the point is, I have come to the realization that I should be in the market for an apron that will keep kitchen splatters off of my outfits. Of course, it has to be something chic, sassy, sweet, and cute. With a little help from Jessie Steele, I have narrowed my selection down to the following...

The CafeToile Apron is possibly my one true love due to the fact that it features one of my favorite things: a cafe! Even better, when you look closely at the print, you can see that the illustrations are very reminscent of Paris, and who doesn't want to fantasize about eating croissants at a true Parisian cafe?!

Keeping in line with the season's passion for florals, I find the Blue Polka Floral Apron to be one of the sweetest choices. The flowers are bright and cheery, and, let's face it, you can never go wrong with oversized polka dots.

I couldn't not include the delicious Cupcakes Apron. There's just something about the smell of cupcakes baking in the kitchen that brings a smile to my face - and a hunger pain to my stomach. Wearing something as sweet as this would make me feel as if I could smell cupcakes even when there aren't any around!

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Valentine's Day is just around the corner, but this Sweethearts apron has not only caught my eye, but my heart as well. With this apron you'd be cooking up love in the kitchen year-round.

Jessie Steele has some of the sweetest aprons on the planet. With bows adorning all of her creations, and some even decked out in ruffles, I can’t help but to want them all! So...which one would you choose?

A Cupcake Affair

"Cupcakes are the perfect food - they're darling to look at, you don't need utensils, and you don't have to share."
Mia Bauer, co-owner of New York City's Crumbs Bake Shop

Teen Vogue is always full of a plethora of amazing ideas, and the February 2009 issue is no different. Not only is Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl's Blair Waldorf herself) the featured cover girl, but one article in particular has left me in dire need of a full-blown sugar rush.

"Sweet Dreams" is the party idea of my...well, dreams. Cupcakes and fashion go together like Oreo cookies and milk. Perhaps it has something to do with the fashionable Marie Antoinette and her legendary "let them eat cake" quote, or the devotion that Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw always displayed towards New York City's Magnolia Bakery. No matter what, it's just a given. You can't have fashion without cupcakes, or cupcakes without fashion.

Which is why this Valentine's Day I will be trading in my Juicy Couture mittens for oven mitts as I have...A Cupcake Affair. There will be lace and bows, headbands and tights, capelets and pillbox hats, high heels and high fashion. And, most importantly, lots and lots of cupcakes!

Little White Dress

"When a little black dress is right, there is nothing else to wear in its place."
Wallis Warfield Simpson, Duchess of Windsor

Who doesn’t love the little black dress? It’s an item of clothing you can toss on whenever you’re scrounging around for something luxurious to wear; and it’s chic yet simple. But what about the little white dress? To me, there is just something about white that is so fresh, crisp, clean…It reminds me of just-washed laundry. Casual strolls on the boardwalk. Frolicking in a field of daisies. So why does it go unnoticed? Why is there always so much focus on the little black dress, and none on the little white dress?

What are your thoughts? If you had to choose just one, would you select the little black dress or the little white dress? And, just out of curiosity, what does the color white remind you of?

Red Rover

Not since I was five-years-old have I taken sultry red tones over perky pinks, but I’ve had a change of heart. An epiphany, if you will. As of this morning, I am in dire need of a pair of red patent leather ballerina flats. Why? Well, I was walking to the cafeteria at work, when what should appear in front of me? Someone wearing basic blacks that were fairly uninteresting; but when I looked down, there were bright, shiny reds staring back at me. There was just something about those shoes that breathed life into an overall dead ensemble. They were like a light at the end of a tunnel. A single star in a pitch black sky. A jolt of caffeine when you’re on the brink of collapse. It was love at first sight…and just in time for Valentine’s Day!

"Red rover, red rover, send cherry red patent leather ballerina flats right over!"

Give Me Lauren Moshi or Give Me Death!

Sometimes a designer just grabs your attention, and captures your interests in the creations they put on the market. To me, that designer is brother sister design duo Lauren Moshi. Their wild kingdom prints just make me...wild. I was one of those kids who always loved taking trips to the San Diego Wild Animal Park and San Diego Zoo. In fact, I still love outings to those very places. It’s a trip that gives you a free pass to wear ratty flip flops and an embarrassing fanny pack with wild abandonment. A time to toss all fashion sense to the wind and just have a good time. Perhaps this is why Lauren Moshi means so much to me. They conjure up memories of fun, fabulousness, and...flamingos!

I suppose I have to thank Lauren Conrad for my discovery of Lauren Moshi’s designs. If it weren’t for me seeing her wearing that gray elephant tank a mere two months ago, I may have missed this wonder. Since then I have followed her work, and realized that many of the clothes draped upon various celebrities that I was admiring over the past few months were made by none other than Lauren Moshi herself. For instance, the little swing dresses. The roaring tiger tees. The sophisticated seahorse hoodies. Even the thorny rose tank.

There's just something so cheery. So delightful. So...animalistic about her designs - even the ones that just depict headband-wearing hippies, and metallic motorcycles. Forgive me for being dramatic, but...give me Lauren Moshi or give me death!

Strawberry Fields

"Let me take you down
Cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real
And nothing to get hung about
Strawberry Fields forever"

The Beatles, "Strawberry Fields Forever"

Maybe it has something to do with the unseasonably warm weather, but there's a part of me that can't help but imagine tossing on my cotton paisley print babydoll dress, and skipping through a strawberry field. My hair being tousled by the breeze, a red stain on my fingertips from picking (and eating) too many berries. It just sounds like the absolute perfect way to spend a warm, sunshine-filled afternoon. But, since I'm currently eating lunch, behind a desk, inside an office, the closest I can get to strawberry fields is my imagination - and these adorable strawberry-printed fashions that I'm just dying to get my hands on!

Nothing reminds me more of the summertime than gingham and bikinis. This Strawberries and Gingham Black 2-Piece Halter Bandeau Tie Side Bikini from Fashion Bloom USA combines the best of both worlds, and even goes so far as to toss in an adorable pink and red strawberry print that is good enough to eat!

Rings have been one of my favorite things since birth. I used to pair them with every outfit. This particular Strawberry Ring from Cherry Red Boutique brings back such memories. It also reminds me of my childhood hero - Strawberry Shortcake.

Even when it comes to strawberries, I can't deny my inner Blair Waldorf, which is why I'm absolutely craving this Betsey Johnson Strawberry Hard Head Band. The strawberry looks so lifelike, and the colors are enough to make me swoon. I could see it looking absolutely darling with the Betsey Johnson Strawberries Babydoll Dress, Betsey Johnson Strawberry Daisy Chiffon Trapeze Mini Dress, or even just a solid-colored frock or jeans.

Naughty Secretary Club's Strawberry Bangle is the perfect accessory if you're simply looking to add a splash of juicy, fresh-picked elegance to your ensemble. It also possesses the childlike playfulness that I love to embrace.

Necklaces and the color pink are just two of my passions. In fact, you will rarely see my neck bare - it's always adorned by a scarf or a necklace. Which is why I was so taken by Max & Chloe's Sydney Evan Pink Sapphire Strawberry Necklace. The pink sapphires and gold are a nice contrast to one another, while the little gold leaves add an undeniable sophistication to the piece. It may cost an arm and a leg - $1,685.00 - but, like they say in the L'oreal commercials, "because you're worth it."

Earrings, earrings, earrings. Is it just me, or do you feel like your lobes are naked when they aren't adorned with earrings? Well, for the strawberry lover I have found the most precious Glass Strawberry Earrings by Elizabeth Johnson Art Glass that will make you feel all dressed up - even if you're simply lounging around the house in your sweats!

Sometimes I feel as if "vintage" is my middle name. I absolutely adore anything that looks handcrafted, or a little old-fashioned, which is why I'm so taken with this Berryliscious Bracelet from Naughty Secretary Club. The buttons, the silver tones...they're absolutely precious. I could honestly see anyone from June Cleaver to Gwen Stefani rocking this darling accessory.

Rebel Ballerina

I'll admit it, I must be on some sort of ballet binge, because when I saw this picture on Stylesightings it took every bit of strength I have not to get up and dance. There's just something so perfectly chic and graceful about this ensemble, yet it's completely classic at the same time. The black boots, tights, gloves, and tulle-like tutu are almost goth; but the white piping on the black ruffled scarf, the sparkly gold lining on the dress, and the gray-belted jacket lighten the outfit up, and provide a nice contrast to the dark tones. It's like a ballerina gone wrong - yet it's completely right!

A Charmed Life

I was perusing the magazine section at Wal-Mart this morning, trying to pass time, when lo and behold I stumbled across Victoria, which is possibly the most quaint, adorable, vintage magazine on the planet. The cover photo (teacups!) alone dragged me in, but the content inside kept my attention. Especially one very beautiful piece of jewelry that I can't stop thinking about...the All My Love Bracelet from Sweet Romance. Now, before I go on, I will admit that I have a passion for charm bracelets. In fact, they possess the power to make me weak in the knees. But that is not why this particular bracelet piqued my interest. No, that has to do more with the fact that it's absolutely gorgeous! The pearls. The crystals. The pink. The brassy, antique finish. The hearts. The hidden snake. And, my personal favorite...the love letter - which reminds me fully of the Limited-Edition Juicy Couture Love Letter Charm that I have been coveting for, oh, only the last three months. There's just something about this particular charm bracelet that makes me want to whip out my credit card, a la the precocious Eloise, and shout the magic words..."Charge it please!"

The Demise of Domino

It has taken me days to finally come to terms with the fact that my beloved Domino magazine is no more. Domino was like the Vogue of the decorating world. It was the place to go whenever you needed the solution to your design woes; and now it's gone. With a cover girl like Zooey Deschanel on the February 2009 issue, I never would have thought it possible. It seemed like the magazine would be around forever; yet here we are discussing its demise. Could this be the beginning of the end to glossies as we know it? Will we soon be unable to flip through our favorite monthlies while lying in bed? Will we no longer have the privilege of jumping for joy when we open the mailbox and find our favorite magazines peeking out at us, just waiting to be read? Say it isn't so!

GaGa Over Pearls

I've always adored pearls, but Lady GaGa's vintage pearl-adorned blazer has given me a whole new respect for them. It's as if she replaced the 80's shoulder pad with strands and strands of perfection. She may be known for wearing tights in place of actual pants, but this jacket more than makes up for it.

The Tight Stuff

I stopped wearing tights years ago; around the same time I tossed out my unfashionable clogs, and destroyed all evidence of ever having owned, let alone worn, Birkenstock sandals. But the new crocheted/lacy look tights that I keep seeing is enough to make me want to go out and buy a pair. They have the ability to dress up a mini or dress down a business suit; yet still possess the ability to add a different dimension to just about anything in your closet.

Let's Give Them Something to Talk About

Ever since The Pink Tutu posted the above picture, I have become obsessed with conversation hearts. Not to eat, of course, but to decorate with. There's something so elementary adorable, and incredibly sweet about enlisting the help of conversation hearts to brighten up a room. With their pastel colors, and quaint little messages, they're absolutely impossible to resist. And Kohl's has some of the cutest offerings. From mugs to wreaths, and even a little conversation heart tree. They'll never top cupcakes, but...I think I'm in love.

The Lady in Lace

Marc by Marc Jacobs, Erin Fetherston, Alice + Olivia. I tend to keep up with all of their new designs; whereas I’ve often overlooked Diane von Furstenberg’s creations. Not anymore. Since seeing her Spring 2009 Ready to Wear Collection I have fallen head over heels for the designer. The flirty lacy frocks are what did it for me. There’s something so mod yet ethereal, 70’s yet classic, hippie yet chic about them. If I were one of those girls who sat around daydreaming about her future wedding this would be my dream dress.

Tutu-rific!

Being obsessed with tutus and ballerinas is like an unwritten rule for pre-adolescent girls. I remember wearing my pale pink one over jeans, with sweatshirts, and even paired with my beloved lavender-colored, fringe-adorned cowboy boots. When I dropped out of ballet lessons years ago, I packed my tutu away, but I never forgot about it. In fact, there have been times when I’ve attempted to pair it with different outfits – with disastrous results, of course. Luckily, Alice + Olivia have come to save the day. With their fluttery, dance-inspired dresses, I now have the ability to fulfill my tutu-inspired dreams, and dance the night away in classic, ballerina style!

Or, more specifically, latte art you can wear.

Sassy Specs

"Men seldom make passes at girls who wear glasses."
Dorothy Parker

I'm not sure who the indomitable Dorothy Parker was referring to in her world-famous quote, but it certainly wasn't Zooey Deschanel.
As the face of Oliver Peoples' Spring/Summer 2009 ad campaign, the oft-times bow-adorned She + Him songstress has proven that glasses are - to put it bluntly - hot. The ad campaign itself is pretty amazing as well. I absolutely adore the gritty, undercover, old-time noir feel of each of the photographs. Not to mention the Breakfast at Tiffany's inspired taxi shot. The poses are so lifelike it's almost as if Zooey was being stalked by overaggressive paparazzi. I love it.

If Oliver Peoples didn't charge so much for their glasses ($450 is way too much to spend when you're on a college student's budget), I could definitely see myself buying a pair - or ten.

Keep the Cocktail, Just Give Me the Ring

Brightly colored nail polish used to do the trick, but now I'm looking for something bigger, bolder, and more chic to adorn my hands. I'm looking for...cocktail rings.

There's something so elegant about cocktail rings that I can't help but feel positively giddy at the mere thought of them. I want to wear one on each of my ten fingers. I want to wear them with black elbow length evening gloves a la Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. I want to pair them with everything in my closet. I want to...oh, let's cut to the chase; I want - scratch that, I need - cocktail rings with every fiber of my being. Cocktail rings are the epitome of - dare I say it - bling. Pink Puddles

Rain is on the horizon and all I can think about is curling up in bed with a good mystery. Browsing through thrift stores for vintage accessories. Baking cupcakes just for the fun of it. Watching a chick flick movie marathon. Dancing to guilty-pleasure pop music in my pajamas. Taking a catnap. Building a fort out of sheets and pillowcases and hibernating inside along with a lifetime worth of fashion magazines.

All of these things sound luxurious and craveworthy; yet so does skipping through the rain in a cupcake-pink raincoat.
