Goddess for a Day

At three I announced that I was going to be a princess. Five marked the year that I set up my own makeshift school in the garage and pretended that I was a teacher. The year I turned eight I was convinced that I would be a pop star despite the fact that my vocal talents? Kind of non-existent. From there I flip-flopped from veterinarian to psychologist; fashion designer to writer; and a handful of other careers that have come and gone from my life. But I have had an awakening of sorts; perhaps driven by my love of Greek mythology. My new career du jour? Goddess.

Keith Lissner “Annie” How one can even attempt to be a Goddess without the proper attire is inconceivable to me. And by proper attire, I mean this divine Annie Dress from Chicago-born designer Keith Lissner. One shoulder. Metallic. Silk chiffon. Pleated. When it comes to being a goddess, Annie is the piece de resistance of dresses. The material seemingly cascades over your body; while the slight ruffled ruching at the shoulder and wide ribbon cinching the waist provide just the right amount of detailing that is undeniably decadent. I’ll be dreaming of Annie tonight...will you?

House of Harlow 1960 “Brass Seven-Strand Coin Head Piece” A legitimate goddess one cannot be without the consummate piece of headwear. A crown would be something left to a princess; a more befitting piece for a goddess is this Brass Seven-Strand Coin Head Piece from Nicole Richie’s heavenly House of Harlow 1960 line. Handcrafted out of teeny-tiny brushed brass coin charms this makes for the quintessential accessory for any wannabe goddess. And the best part? It manages to look glorious when topping just about any hair color or style imaginable.

Forever 21 “Lexi Leaf Necklace” Greek goddesses of history were known for wearing leaves in their hair. You’ve already got the headpiece covered; so a lovely place for the leaves to rest? Around your throat via this Lexi Leaf Necklace, of course. Stunning texturized gold leaves cause quite a stir in this statement necklace that features a cluster of fabulous foliage draped haphazardly in an elegant fashion. And the choker-like length makes it noticeable even from across a crowded room. This is a polished bauble worthy of worship.

Diba “Betsie Belle” I have never been able to embrace the style of Gladiator sandals (please feel free to convince me otherwise); regardless, I am obsessed with metallic wedges, and believe that they have the power to transform just about any outfit into something ethereal yet fun. Case in point, these Betsie Belle beauties from Diba. The disc-like ornamenting along the straps? Delicious. The glittering gold color? Gorgeous. The height? Handsome. The partial cork wedge? Perfect. The adjustable ankle strap? Absolute. There is no question about it these pretties are the ultimate in goddess footwear. Besides, little Annie would be lonely without them.

Roberto Cavalli “Serpent Bracelet Clutch” What did the serpent represent in Greek mythology? The earth. Since my earth is all consumed with thoughts of handbags, I find it only necessary to pay tribute to this mythological infused Serpent Bracelet Clutch. A typical gold satin foldover clutch, this shimmering piece of splendor harbors a little secret. The gold serpent that serves as the adorable wristlet? Well, it doubles as an enchanting, detachable bracelet. Sure, it may be $965, but think of it as two pleasing pieces in one. We all know Aphrodite would.

Smitten Saturday

♥Chopper Chic I have searched high and low for a pair of motorcycle boots that were affordable yet divine. Finally, after putting a halt to my hunt, the pair of my dreams seemingly comes right up and bites me on the nose in the form of an under-eighteen-dollar find at Target. The discovery, however, may have caused more harm than good. Sure, I’m absolutely weak in the knees from this fashion find; but it has also left me in a complete and utter tizzy. Suddenly I’m obsessed with motorcycle boots, and want to add more chopper chic magnificence to my footwear. These offer a quintessential mix of handsome ruggedness and feminine mystique. Wouldn’t these look blissful if paired with a crisp white shirtdress cinched with a black belt or ribbon? And these are obviously destined to make an appearance in little Jenny Humphrey’s rebellious wardrobe any day now. Regardless of the fact that I am terrified of motorcycles, I am utterly tempted by the fashion that is synonymous to them.

♥Dear Dylan I have never had much of a sweet tooth. In fact, when I was a child, I would collect candy on Halloween while decked out as my favorite Disney Princess, bring it home to sort and count; then promptly give it to my sugar-addicted friends and family members. That said, ever since I learned of Dylan’s Candy Bar, I’ve wanted to move in. Or at least pop in for a visit. Especially now that they have accessories. I plan on donning this Striped Ring while digging into these Chocolate Covered Gummy Bears. I’d love to swipe on some of this Chocolate Cupcake Lip Saver while sucking on these Whirly Pops. And splashing into a puddle while wearing these Rain Boots and chomping on these Chocolate Covered Pretzels? Sounds like a plan to me. I’m in dire need of a sugar rush; Dear Dylan, please bring a Candy Bar location to California!

♥Channeling Chanel I’ve come to the conclusion that I most likely will be unable to afford a Chanel 2.55 Quilted Bag, or Chanel Two-Tone Ballerina Flats anytime in the near future; thus, to satisfy my craving for Chanel, I have decided to acquire the designer’s divine pieces via a cheaper outlet – nail polish. I’ll take this Le Vernis Nail Colour in Ballerina (because my dream is to be one), Paparazzi (who doesn’t love to feel as if they’re being hounded by the press?), and Fizz (because I plan on indulging in many fizzy, fruit, colorful, tropical drinks over the summer); and this Nail Colour Limited Edition Exclusive Creation Facettes D’or in Gold Fiction because every girl deserves a little gold in her life. Who knew that Channeling Chanel could be so simple?


♥Madame Butterfly I was always a very loyal follower of butterflies. Until owls came into my life, that is. The nocturnal dreamboats quickly took center stage in my eyes, replacing the fluttering femme fatales. This colorful butterfly dress has restored my affections for them. I first saw Ashley Tisdale donning it over six months ago and instantly wondered who the mastermind behind such a cheery creation could be. Now I know...Free People! I long to add this delight to my summer attire. In addition to this, this, and this, of course. Just call me Madame Butterfly!

♥Breakfast in New York I blame it on Heidi Merrick and her divine Aunt Judy Dress which I raved about not too long ago. If it weren’t for her, I may not have stumbled upon Sunday Brunch Dress Shop; but I suppose it’s too late to do anything about it now. Sunday Brunch Dress Shop has become one of my first stops each time I log onto the information highway. Each offering looks like something straight out of the closet of Daisy Buchanan; and manages to appear classic, while completely modern at the same time. Currently I’m salivating over the electric blue Mel en Stel Cup of Tea Ruffle Dress (pinkies up!); the Heidi Merrick Traveling Dress; the Mimi Turner Terra Cotta Zipper Dress (perfect for dancing the night away!), the Fin Eco Slouchy Dress; and, of course, my dear Aunt Judy. So...who wants some breakfast?

♥Livin’ La Vida Leighton It has taken me some time to come to terms with the fact that Leighton Meester is not Blair Waldorf and Blair Waldorf is not Leighton Meester. Remiss, I must admit that I L-O-V-E the both of them just as if they were one and the same. Like Blair, Leighton has a wonderful fashion sense. Just look at this perfect peach pairing – j’adore! Like Blair, Leighton has an adorable boyfriend who is a part-time Gossip Guy – Sebastian Stan. And, while Blair has never belted anything out on Gossip Girl (at least as far as I can remember), I am a huge fan of Leighton’s voice, which can be heard a la Bette Davis Eyes here. Yes, I’m livin’ la vida Leighton; and proud of it!

Plain White T's

In this time of recessionista fashion, I have found that the plain white tee has become my new best friend. It is the crème de la crème of affordable tops, and manages to go with just about everything in your wardrobe. Placed under a prim blazer, it is ideal for work. Worn with a denim mini it is flawless for a day of shopping or an afternoon at the beach spent languorously soaking up the sun. Topped with long necklaces or a cropped vest in a contrasting color it is quintessential for a girls’ night out or an impromptu movie date. Now all that’s left is finding the right one for you.

GAP “Flutter Sleeve Braided T” As if being an affordable plain white tee weren’t perfect enough, this Flutter Sleeve Braided T already comes adorned with a delicately braided scoopneck in addition to flutter sleeves, and a lightly ruched front. Together these three qualities give this otherwise plain white tee a romantic, flirty air that requires no dressing up. Just slip on and go!

Target “Juniors’ Mossimo Supply Pocket V-Neck Tee – True White” Not to be biased but, I own twelve of these shirts (3 white, 1 pink, 1 electric blue, 2 navy blue, 3 hunter green, 1 gray, 1 light green). It may sound excessive, but these tops are the staple of my wardrobe. The v-neck is just right (not too low, not too high), the color is optimal (not see-through, but still very light, airy, and weightless), and the fit is simply wondrous (form-fitting yet baggy in all the right places). The little breast pocket is a rare feature, yet one that is totally treasured; and the longer than usual length gives you the option of turning this top into a tunic, or making it hit right at your waistband. The best part? At just $8.00 you’ll have enough saved over for a little something extra – a piece of jewelry perhaps?

Nordstrom “TWEN-TEE Extra Fine Knit Tank” When it comes to tank tops, typically I just say no; but this one is actually pretty cute. I’m obsessed with the fact that the white trim is thicker than that of the rest of the top, providing an ever so slight contrast between the two shades that is classic and lovely. It doesn’t hurt that this tank doubles as an excellent piece for layering, so it won’t go to waste once the weather turns chilly.

Urban Outfitters “BDG Dolman Tee” As a proud, card carrying member of skinny jean lovers anonymous, I can never stress enough just how much I adore the look of a loose, oversized top paired with the denim dreams. Hence the reason why it only took a minute for this BDG Dolman Tee to catch my eye. The winter white shade is sheer, but not see-through. The neck is wide, slightly mimicking that of a ballerina or boatneck tee; and the dolman sleeves are the perfect middle ground for someone who doesn’t want to hit the three-quarter mark, but isn’t crazy about super short sleeves or a tank. The end result is this $32 dazzler.

Revolve Clothing “Blue Life Departure Tee in White” I can’t help but see the asymmetrical hemline as an idealistic way for adding a little wild child to your wardrobe; and this Blue Life Departure Tee in White does a wicked job of doing just that. There’s something so fetching, yet completely laid-back, relaxed, and cool about slipping into something with an asymmetrical hemline. The cut manages to project self-confidence and effervescence with just one wear; yet it retains a very comfy, beachy vibe which makes it very versatile, and a must for your wardrobe.

The Itsy, Bitsy Spider

I didn’t think it was possible for me to love a spider, but this Betsey Johnson Polka Dot Spider Ring has proven me wrong. Reminiscent of a demure ladybug, this itsy, bitsy spider is an alarming shade of red with a dash of perky pink, and features fashionable white polka dots along her circular head and body. The colored enamel leads into a gold band, six little curved gold legs, and gold tentacles that give this girl personality galore. Oh how I long to wear this spidery goddess on summer picnics complete with ice cold lemonade, floral sundresses, and, of course, cupcakes! Can you just imagine the impression she would make on fellow picnickers?

Bjorn Borg or Bust

I have always been one to salivate over lacy underpinnings that are romantic and frilly with a few strategically placed ruffles here and there. Basically, the underwear version of a scrummy cupcake. Since Miriam over at Insider’s Journal sent me a pair of the Fun Stretch Hipster Brief 7-2013, however, I have had a slight change of heart. Sure, I still love the divine look and feel of dainty, charming offerings; but sometimes something a little more rugged is preferred.


Having always viewed hipsters from afar, I had no idea just how comfortable they could be until I slipped on this pair. Now, I can barely bring myself to part with them. Not only are they flattering and adorable; they’re available in so many colors that you can keep your drawers stocked for years to come. These black ones are chic in a Calvin Klein way, and the rainbow-colored elastic waistband adds a splash of fun to an otherwise stark backdrop; while other pieces in the collection appear more girly, such as the baby pink and white checkmarks seen here or the pastels displayed here.

I am so thrilled with these that I’m now contemplating the purchase of a pair in the Marie Antoinette inspired Aurora Pink, or a tantalizing print. Worn under your favorite jeans, or paired with a tiny tank for those warm, lazy days spent loafing around the house, these are the undergarment equivalent of the morning coffee that jumpstarts your day. Besides, you can never have too many pairs of underwear!

The Key Club

When I was in grade school I collected keychains that were kept locked up in an old wooden box, not to be used by anyone; they were simply there to be admired from afar. I suppose with age my tastes became more refined, for now the under-ten dollar keychains that used to make me so happy have been replaced by Tiffany Keys.

Cowgirl for a Day

I will admit it. I choose the glorious sounds of indie rock over that of a twangy guitar. I identify more with a city slicker than a country bumpkin. I have never been up close and personal with a cow, goose, lamb, or pig. And I prefer gingham to be on a picnic blanket as opposed to my top. Yet for some unidentifiable reason, I have decided that what I truly want to be is...a cowgirl. Okay, so maybe I don’t want to learn how to round-up cows or churn butter. But there is one cowgirl-inspired accessory that I’m just itching to call my own...cowboy boots!

Steve Madden "Lonestar" I may not be from the Lonestar State , but that doesn’t mean that I won’t be one lonely girl if I don’t have these camel-colored beauties lurking in my closet. As if the stitch detailing covering the entire 13-inch shaft of these charmers isn’t appealing enough; the blinding shine and the 2.25 inch heel most certainly do the trick. Paired with a purple cotton sundress? Adorable. Coupled with a worn-in pair of skinnies? Chic. They’re multifaceted and magnificent. Oh Stevie, you have such a way with footwear.

Frye "Billy Vintage Pull On Western Boots" In the words of Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw, “hello gorgeous.” What are the chances of finding a pair of gray cowboy boots? Slim to none. Thus, these need to come home with me now. I’ve wanted to go gray – in terms of footwear, of course – for the past few months, and this is the ideal way to do so. Distressed. Pebbled. Gray, glorious gray. Spotted with splendid stitching here, there, and everywhere. Somebody pinch me; I must be dreaming!

"Brown Camel Slouchy Cowboy Boot" So you want to be a cowgirl but you want to retain your glamorous persona? Look no further. GoJane’s Brown Camel Slouchy Cowboy Boot is the answer to our beautified cowboy boot dreams. No steel toes here, girls! In place of the typical atrocity is a toe made up of gold metallic splendor. The slouchy suede shaft discreetly transforms into a divine distressed leather upper and bottom. And the stitching? White contrasting, of course. I am so ready to kick up my heels and rock these with my dark wash denim mini. But the best part? They are absolutely perfect if you’re looking to get down and dirty on the farm, as the slick black color would look pigpen chic if splattered with a few drops of mud and some dirt. Versatile, cute. What more could you ask for?

Lucchese "N4536 4/4" Contrary to popular belief, pink cowboy boots? They’re not just for toddlers. Case in point, these Lucchese jaw-droppers. Here they’re fuchsia. Here they’re baby pink. Over here there’s a splash of peach. Oh, and let’s not forget the swirly designs. Or how amazing the bright pink of the boot looks in contrast to the dark black of the sole and heel. Face it, with footwear like this who needs personality? Your shoes will surely steal the show!

♥Ribbons, and Rhinestones, and Romance, Oh My! While I am a self-professed fashionista, I am a broke fashionista; so I have always turned to rhinestones as a way to satisfy my diamond-laden dreams. It was not until I spotted this Rhinestone Satin Necklace from Forever 21, however, that I realized just how much of a statement a few well-placed rhinestones, and an exquisitely colored piece of satin or ribbon could make when draped about a swan-like neck. I am now eyeing this Miu Miu Satin Bow Necklace, this Vera Wang Lavender Label Crystal Triangle Necklace which can double as a belt (!), and this Victorian inspired Jewels & Lace Ribbon Necklace from Forever 21. I can just picture the romantic excursions that may take place when donning one of these gems!

♥Shopping Sprees & Chocolate I am a girl; thus, there are two things that make me over-the-top happy...shopping sprees and chocolate. So it is no surprise that I am hungry (no pun intended) to find a way to merge my two passions together. And I have. Gayle’s Chocolates has brought edible footwear to my attention via the Chocolate High Heel Shoe which is, quite possibly, the most delicious piece of footwear I have ever laid eyes on. The question is...would I be able to eat such a glorious sweet without feeling guilty.

♥Buffalo Bill I have just made a splendrous new discovery in the form of Buffalo Exchange. No, it is not a place to exchange buffalos, or other large breeds of cattle; nor is it a stagecoach stop located in a prairie someplace in the middle of nowhere. Rather, Buffalo Exchange is a place for fashionista’s (like you and me) to trade clothes and accessories that we’re completely bored with for new pieces, or, even better, cash! It’s like a thrift store that caters entirely to the fashion obsessed; and, if you’re not as excited as me already, today is Dollar Day! What if I find a Chanel Quilted Handbag, or a cute Coach Cuff Bracelet for just a buck? It would be the highlight of my day. Scratch that...the highlight of my year. I’m about five seconds away from hopping in my car and gunning the engine...ladies and gentleman please kindly move out of the way, I’m headed to Buffalo Exchange!


♥Suspended! Suspenders have always been synonymous with the nerdy Steve Urkel, and large lumberjacks. But high fashion is changing that; attaching them to pencil skirts and short shorts that provide a throwback to the days when wearing overalls wasn’t solely for farmers. Which is why...well...I seriously want a pair! These Twinkle Jewels Entwined All Shook Up Suspender Shorts in Black? Kind of the most amazing pair I have ever laid eyes on. They retain that office-attire sophistication with a splash of fun – it just depends on the top you pair with them! Blame it on a childhood of reading The Little Engine That Could over and over again, but I’ve always harbored secret dreams of becoming an engineer or train conductor. My lack of math skills prohibits such a career; but it doesn’t prohibit me from traipsing around town in these super McQ Sale Engineer Shorts with Suspenders 016W. And this Betsey Johnson Show Off the Shoulder Ruffle Dress? It simply brought a new way to wear suspenders to my attention in a form that I absolutely adore.

♥Lipnotize Me Sally Hansen has seemingly been around forever, but only just recently did I unearth Lipnotic Gem Gloss. Take it from someone who has not only tried almost every lip gloss known to man, but carries no less than five tubes of lip gloss in her purse at all times; this is the lip gloss only found in dreams. I have been perusing Treasure (# 10) over the past few weeks, and have never been happier. Smooth, shiny, shimmery, long-lasting...it’s like diamonds for your lips. And we all know that diamonds are a girls’ best friend.

♥Lanvin Lust Over the past few weeks I have noticed a pattern in my fashion cravings. They have all been released by the luscious Lanvin. What better way to display a little journalistic integrity than by toting your much-needed pen and paper about town in this lovely; aptly titled The Reporter? How can you possibly embrace your inner-socialite without these Swarovski Crystal embellished Satin Ankle-Strap Pumps adorning your tootsies? How can you even begin to contemplate making it through the day without this Smokey Crystal Ring sitting pretty on your finger? Yes, I’m lusting over Lanvin, and there’s no ending in sight!

Bonnie Bojangles

Bonnie Cashin: Considered one of the most significant pioneers of designer ready-to-wear, more commonly called sportswear, in America. Considering how much Bonnie Cashin did for the fashion industry, I find it a great tragedy that I had no idea who she was until spotting the Coach Bonnie Cashin tote in the February 2009 issue of Teen Vogue (which arrived in my mailbox to eagerly awaiting hands just a few days after Christmas), and doing a bit of research on my home away from home – the World Wide Web. Since then I have grown to love the fashion pioneer as much as Diana Vreeland, Coco Chanel, and Dorothy Parker.

But after surfing the Coach website, and searching for any mention of the Bonnie Collection for months upon months, I began to think that the release of the tribute series featuring totes and t-shirts depicting the sketches of chic ladies about town had been pushed back. Or, even worse, halted altogether. Then one day, on a fluke, I visited Coach.com, and there they were in all of their colorful, cartoon-inspired glory; just waiting to be snatched up by the fashionista who is not restrained by a budget (aka not me).

What I love so much about this collection is that not only are the sketches extremely whimsical and innocent; but the little phrases and sayings that dot each bag in hip text bubbles are akin to receiving a note from your fashion-wise best friend. Never before did I think it imaginable that I would be so taken with something as childlike as the Bonnie Cashin Collection; but between the cotton candy inspired colors and the words of fashion wisdom, these pieces have become the apple of my eye, and are quickly making their way to the tip top of my wish list.

It's A Mod, Mod World

There are three things that I loathe about purchasing furniture:

♥It always seems to be outrageously expensive, forcing me to subsist on nothing but peanut butter and Top Ramen for months on end after taking it home.

♥No matter how many diagrams and directions are included, managing to fit each piece together so that it resembles something from Planet Earth seems synonymous with being handed a million dollars by a complete stranger.

♥Once you manage to put it all together, moving it ever again is completely out of the question.

Thus, I have decided that modular furniture may be just the thing I need for a little piece of mind, and a lot of home décor splendor.

I was one of those kids who devoted hours upon hours to playing Tetris on my cumbersome, gray, old-school Game Boy (which I still have lurking in my bedroom closet, if memory serves me correctly). When I wasn’t glued to the green screen, I was dreaming of the colorful falling blocks in my sleep. Perhaps that explains why I am so taken by this 2+1 bit from SDESIGNUNIT. One minute it’s a single bed; the next, a sofa; and to round it all off, it even transforms into a table with two chairs. I’m not sure whether it’s my Tetris-loving heart, or my desire for simplicity, but either way, I think that this work of cleverness needs to make an appearance in my bedroom ASAP!

I’m sure that this sounds ridiculous, but I truly believe that this Modular Table Set from Way Basics was created with me in mind. For a mere $135 they offer up a table and four chairs in cotton candy colors that are water resistant, completely recyclable, and, my personal favorite, easy-to-assemble, setting up in three seconds flat (less time than it takes my nails to dry!) and requiring no tools. This is the piece de resistance of modular furniture, and the new apple of my eye. My only problem now is choosing a shade...should I mix and match, or create a pink palace by sticking to one color scheme?

First I have to accept that our male counterparts have better wardrobes than we do; now I have to admit that toddlers? Yeah, they have way cooler furniture than grown-ups. Do you remember when inflatable chairs began to take over the world back in the nineties, completely replacing the beloved bean bag chair, and claiming the affections of teens from California to Canada ? Back then, I thought they were kind of ridiculous. But now, after a few years of struggling with heavy, hernia-inducing pieces, I believe that I’m ready to embrace them wholeheartedly. These Inflatable Bubble Chairs from I Want One of Those are simply sublime. Crafted out of five large and five small inflatable balls, I believe that sitting upon one of these would be akin to sitting upon a giant beach ball, sans the sand, of course. “E is for elephant and for Erika. E is for elephant and for Erika...” Those seven words were repeated to me over and over again when I was learning how to spell my name back when I was in preschool. Imaginably it was that particular drill that made me so fond of the larger than life, wiggly eared animals that are synonymous with good luck; and the reasoning behind my search for a captivating elephant inspired pendant necklace, much like this vintage beauty from Lattice Designs. Between the off-white enamel covering the elephant’s diminutive head; the white, sparkling crystals filling in for his eyes and dotting his tiny gold body; and the lifelike sculpturing of his little toes and flippy tail, I feel plum lucky just having laid eyes on this trumpeting treasure!

Sleeping Beauty

As a child, I often questioned why Princess Aurora (aka Sleeping Beauty) refused to wake-up after pricking her finger on a spinning wheel, despite the attempts of three magic fairies. At the time, I didn’t realize that it would take a kiss from the handsome Prince Phillip to do the trick. Now, however, I don’t blame her for craving some shut-eye. For if I was resting on any of the blissful offerings from Rubie Green’s Bedding Collection, well, I would want to make like Sleeping Beauty and never wake up again myself.

I am truly head over heels for their collection, and it has nothing to do with the fact that everything they offer is organic and eco-friendly, nor does the credit fall to their reasonable prices. Instead, I am more stricken with the line due to the serene, pastel-inspired colors, in addition to the advertising technique which pictures a relatable twenty-something reading on a couch in a sophisticated sundress, tossing a sunshine-colored pillow about, and simply relaxing – things that we would all love to do while resting upon such scrumptious bedding.

The East Village Duvet Cover is my best-loved offering of the lot. The white zig zag design on the pale pink backdrop is fit for a king (or queen!). I can’t help but want to curl up in it with a warm mug of coffee much like the picture illustrates. It seems like the ideal plan for a lazy Sunday morning; complete with warm, buttery croissants, and a few glossies.

Yes, yes, yes...I’m fancying myself a Sleeping Beauty moment right about...now.

Tote-ally Adorable

Nothing marks the change of seasons for me as well as the introduction of new designers to Target stores. But for spring it isn’t the GO International Collection that has caught my eye. Rather it’s Felix Rey’s contribution to the handbag department. Namely their Bora Bora Canvas Tote with Fish Appliques. Not since the release of Paul & Joe’s Plaid Owl Bag have I been so enamored with a Target tote. The blue and white stripe-like waves are very elementary; while the sequin-adorned fish remind me of my dance recital days when I would don flapper-esque sequin headbands and tap shoes with glee. It’s the toggle locks, and gold metallic trim and straps, however, that completely clinch the deal. Equal parts beachy and chic; this is a bag that would work perfectly as either a carryall for a day spent seaside, or a trendy tote for the longwinded shopping trips that inevitably accompany the arrival of summer.

I Didn't Steal Your Boyfriend

I did, however, steal his pants.

Boyfriend jeans are like a girls’ savior when she’s in the throes of feeling frumpy instead of fabulous, and would rather spend the day in sweatpants or their denim alternative instead of even attempting to shimmy into her prized skinny jeans. But finding the perfect pair can be a challenge in and of itself that leaves you huffy and whiny – two things that never look flattering on a girl. So here are a few no-fail selections that your closet – and your bottom half – are simply calling for.

AG Adriano Goldschmied “Tomboy Jean” Okay, so I just fell in love. With a pair of pants. These Tomboy Jeans are possibly one of the cutest pairs of pants I have ever seen. The whiskering that makes the dark color fade to light and vice versa gives them such an authentic, worn-in feel; and the fact that they look incredible when worn cuffed or straight make them completely versatile, and painstakingly coveted. This piece of denim glory gives a whole new meaning to the word tomboy.

Current / Elliott “Super Loved Destroyed” I have never been one to embrace the grungy, destroyed, worn denim look. In fact, under normal circumstances, I turn the tattered fashion away, looking for something a little more sleek and pulled together. Current / Elliott have changed that for me. These Super Loved Destroyed pair, while obviously distressed, are done so in a stylish way. These are, to me, the perfect boyfriends. Not too much bulge. Not too much bag. And the holes, while obviously present, do not bring to mind disheveled disaster but sophisticated style. I am just itching to pair these with a flowy, empire waist top to add a slice of romanticism to the look.

Black Orchid “Opal Black Out Boyfriend” I’m not going to lie, I have a thing for white jeans. That being said, I’m just going to overlook the fact that I have never seen a guy wear white pants before (have you?) and say that these Opal Black Out Boyfriends are an exquisite addition to the boyfriend jean craze. The fact that they manage to keep a feminine shape, while at the same time retaining a loose, laid-back appeal make them a winner in my book – and a must-have, as well!

What Comes Around Goes Around “Vintage Boyfriend 501 Feather Jean” The inclusion of these Vintage Boyfriend 501 Feather Jean truly goes against everything I stand for, as I am a dark wash denim fanatic, and don’t really care for the destroyed look; but just one glance at this light wash offering from What Comes Around Goes Around sporting multiple holes, tears, and rips, and I was hooked. Maybe it’s the pairing with the Converse low-tops that invokes thoughts of males the world over, but to me these are the epitome of the term boyfriend jean; and I couldn’t be more infatuated with them.

Genetic Denim “Charlie Dominant Button Fly Straight Leg Jean” We’ve all seen them. The hipster boys with the rocking hair, who always have the jeans that we wish we could find during our weekly shopping sprees, yet never seem to. Well girls – surprise surprise – here they are. These Charlie Dominant Button Fly Straight Leg Jeans are the denim of our dreams. They’re fitted yet relaxed; feminine yet airy; baggy yet body-hugging. In other words...they’re perfect.

♥Lacy Lady Regardless of the fact that lace gloves are synonymous with tea parties, the Victorian era, and twirling parasols as you traipse the streets in floor-sweeping ball gowns, I believe that every girl should have a pair hidden in her closet for moments when she wants to feel feminine and dainty. I myself am currently in the market for a pair, and am shocked to see how many offerings are out there – especially in the twenty-first century – to choose from. These white ones are just screaming to be paired with pearls and a demure, pale-colored slip dress. These were made with a debutante ball in mind. And I am utterly convinced that the ravishing, yet oh-so backstabbing temptress Penelope Hayes from Anna Godbersen’s Luxe series would don this alluring red pair with her crimson-colored frocks.

♥Le Tempting Truffle I have always been a finicky eater – even when it comes to dessert. Though I love the so-called “Original Sundae Cone,” also known as the Nestle Drumstick, I do not eat it for the ice cream – rather for the cone and the solid chocolate that encases it. Which, when you think of it, makes for many wasted calories. So I have decided to put my Drumstick down, forgo the calories wasted on unwanted ice cream, and pick up one (or five) of these decadent Truffle Cones from FireLilly Gourmet Chocolates. Bite-sized, individually wrapped, and available in six flavors (almond, peanut butter, chocolate milk, minty mousse, dark raspberry, or decadent dark), these are equal parts charming and darling; and I’m ready to devour them whole.

♥Gilty As Charged I tried to stay away from The Gilt Groupe. To ignore the postings proclaiming designer merchandise for dreamlike prices. To abstain from clicking those colorful banner ads depicting all sorts of splendor. I tried, and I failed. Yes, I could have simply not clicked the “Accept Invitation” button; but it was impossible. It was calling my name; and I succumbed to its lure. Sadly, or maybe not so sadly, I love it! I feel as if I am shopping at a lavish boutique when browsing the site. Not to mention that the prices are phenomenal. Yes, I’m Gilty as charged. This week alone I have been tempted with the Gryson Purple Tutu Double Zip (that I was gushing over just last week) for the unreal price of $390; the Foley + Corinna Silk Beaded Necklace Dress for just $198; and an adorable ADAM Belted Shirt Dress for $174. Somebody please hide my credit card!


♥Let It Shine I thought I was over the whole legging craze. I mean, my cotton leggings (which I own countless pairs of) have been sitting in my dresser drawer since last summer, long forgotten. But a new type of leggings have come into my life: glossy ones with high shine. I don’t know why I have fallen so head over heels for them; but they’re simply spectacular. They remind me of liquid legs, or a fashion-conscious super hero. While I have no great love for stirrup pants, and am well-aware that they went out with the 80’s, these are the most divine pair of “liquid leggings” that I have ever seen. High-gloss, high-glam, and high-fashion; but low priced. These ones have the power to blind passersby due to an extra sparkle that I can’t resist. These fit, in the words of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, “like a glove!” And these are my designer brand dream. Oh yes, I’m ready to take a pair home.

♥Tweet Tweet! I am probably the last person on earth to join Twitter, but now that I have, I am utterly addicted. Tweeting has become like second nature to me. Maybe it has something to do with the 140-character limit (who doesn’t love trying to tell an entire story in just one or two short sentences?), or the fact that I can follow anyone my heart desires – even celebrities; either way, I am crazy about it. The only problem? Twitter is blocked where I work, so I can’t tweet during my lunch hour. Oh, the horror! But, you can still follow me here.

♥I Heart Lynn Despite the fact that I am out of my teens (though not by much), I have continued to purchase and read both Seventeen and Teen Vogue with much glee each and every month. Reeled in by the cover of the May 2009 issue of Vogue proclaiming The Real Lives of Models, however, led me to take a copy home, where I promptly fell in love with the eccentric Lynn Yaeger. Her tale of surviving and thriving without a Lanvin bag and a diamond-encrusted snake ring after being laid off from The Village Voice, and forced into living on a freelance writer’s budget in the piece On the Market was read and adored from start to finish multiple times. This is a woman whom I would very much enjoy meeting over coffee in a quaint little café to discuss fashion and finances with. A woman who would make for the perfect partner in shopping crime. J’adore her!

Little Nebby

Neb-u-la: Astronomy A diffuse mass of interstellar dust or gas or both, visible as luminous patches or areas of darkness depending on the way the mass absorbs or reflects incident radiation.
I don’t think that I have ever been as happy as the moment I found my package from Lola and George sitting in the mailbox. Opening the mailing envelope alone gave me goosebumps; and as I removed the jewelry box sporting an elegant taupe and white grosgrain ribbon tied in a pretty little bow, I couldn’t contain my excitement. But the wrapping alone was nothing compared to the magnificence awaiting me inside.

Lying on a bed of crinkled off-white shredded paper was the most decadent piece of jewelry I have ever laid eyes on. Countless glimmering Swarovski crystals winking up at me from a resting place made of distressed copper wire woven into a shape reminiscent of a bird’s nest; smaller crystals circling the larger additions like planets orbiting about in space. I was in utter adoration of this ring when I saw it on the Lola and George website, but since seeing it in person I must admit that the picture does not do it justice. It is one hundred times more lovely when viewed up close and personal.

Little Nebby, as I have christened my new best friend, is, in my mind, multiple pieces in one. At times, the Swarovski crystals appear ruby red, suddenly they are violet. Then turquoise. Then lime. Then blue. Then pink. Then purple. The colors change like an effervescent rainbow, picking up the tones and shades of their surroundings, and creating an accessory that leaves people in a state of awe tinged with extreme longing. This is a ring that you simply cannot take your eyes off of. I should know; as I sit here typing this, I find myself hypnotized by the beauty of it, staring up at me from its current home – my right index finger. How I ever made it through life thus far without something as divine as this accompanying me through my many ups and downs is truly beyond me; but now that it has arrived...well, I think I can die happy.

Coffee Break with the Naughty Secretary

They type memos at the speed of light. They answer phones promptly and professionally. They run here and there yet still manage to look perky, cute, and absolutely amazing. Yes, secretaries are true wonders who, according to a History & Heraldry mug someone gave me for Christmas last year, “are loyal, efficient, dedicated, and secretly run the world!” And so in honor of Secretary’s Day (or, rather, the more politically correct Administrative Professionals’ Day), here’s an extra special Q and A with Naughty Secretary Club mastermind Jennifer Perkins.

Were you ever a secretary yourself?
Jennifer: My first job straight out of college was as an Administrative Assistant to Business and Government Relations. My time as a secretary was very uneventful since the majority of the time I was without a boss or anything to do. I used the time between 9 and 5 to get on the internet and build my business.

Why the name Naughty Secretary Club? Do you believe that all secretaries are naughty and/or do you know something about secretaries that the rest of us don’t?
J: Since I was working on my business and not secretarial duties I decided I was a naughty secretary and started the club.. I do not believe that all secretaries are naughty; I have known and worked with some very straight-laced ones in my time.

When/how did you start the Naughty Secretary Club?
J: Around the year 2000. Naughty Secretary Club started as an online ‘zine with band interviews, recipes, craft projects and more; and eventually morphed into a jewelry website.

What’s on your wish list right now?

What do you love to read (magazines/books, etc.)?
J: I just had a baby so my husband reads to me a lot these days. When we first came home from the hospital and would be up in the middle of the night he would read me David Sedaris. I LOVE craft books and hoard them and get such cheap thrills when publishers send me review copies. I also adore going to the Half Price Book Store and loading up on used magazines (fashion and home decorating). That way it is so much cheaper and I have less guilt if I don’t get around to ever reading them.

What is your go to accessory?
J: I have several favorites but almost always you can catch me in a Cha Cha Bracelet, huge earrings of some sort and the same four rings. Funny, I have TONS of jewelry, but tend to wear the same pieces. I rotate purses and shoes pretty often.

Favorite places to shop?
J: I spend way too much time on Etsy, but I am honestly not a huge shopper. I love flea markets and go whenever I can.

Any advice for girls who love fashion/design?
J: Don’t be afraid to make designs that appeal to you even if everyone else thinks they are whack-a-doodle-doo. I started making jewelry because there was nothing big and eccentric enough for my taste. The fact that other people were interested in it was secondary. I make jewelry that I like first and foremost and from there I just hope that other people like it too.

Romper Room

I used to think that rompers were specifically made to be worn as a beach cover-up, but ever since spotting Rebecca Taylor’s Spring Blossom Romper in – of all places – a fashion editorial for Cosmopolitan magazine, I have been coveting the floral-inspired, fuchsia and purple piece of fashion fabulosity. The silky smooth creation reminds me of cool, comfy pajamas; yet the ruffle trim and deep V-neck that features an alluring lace-up tie make it runway ready. I want to pair it with lots of gold bangles and demure lilac/lavender colored shoes. This would be my go-to outfit for the upcoming warmer months if I had $345 lying around, and it wasn’t sold out everywhere. For now I suppose I’ll have to keep my eye out for a good knockoff, or hope that a romper fairy seemingly pulls one out of midair and delivers it directly to my door!

Heart of Glass

Pink may be my favorite color, but blue is the color that dominates my wardrobe (aside from black, white, and gray, that is). This is a fairly strange predicament indeed. Why? I own gorgeous rings in every color imaginable, yet I am in dire need of one that is blue. One that captures the true beauty of the bright sky. The glistening colors of the ocean. The missing piece of the rainbow. Finally, I have found it. This 4 ½ Carat Blue Topaz, Sapphire and Diamond 10K White Gold Ring from Ice.com is my new love – and not just because it’s a heart.
