Thrifty Thursday: Alexander Wang Satin Jersey One-Shoulder Dress for Less

There is nothing more subtly seductive than showing a little shoulder; to allow your skin to play a coquettish game of peek-a-boo with the world, tossing out a wink to your many admirers with each wiggle of your upper arm. It is not something, mind you, that can be achieved with a simple tank, halter, or tube top. Though all of the above show off your skin, they are too commonplace to truly turn heads in a way synonymous with that of the sudden appearance of an Oscar-winning starlet in your local supermarket. For such a show stopping look one must turn instead to a one-shoulder creation; and the one-shoulder stunner I have set my sights on is…Alexander Wang’s Satin Jersey One-Shoulder Dress.

Kitty cats, the goddesses of yesteryear had it right when they draped themselves in sophisticated, floor-sweeping gowns that covered just one shoulder, and allowed the other to shimmer tauntingly amidst the harsh glow of the flickering candlelight. Such a style is something that allows the wearer to show off their femininity; whilst retaining complete majestic modesty. The Satin Jersey One-Shoulder Dress is no different.

Though the hemline is quite a bit shorter than the ones seen in years past, it creates the perfect cutting-edge aesthetic for the tres chic Twenty-First Century girl who craves the ability to be coy in terms of clothing, yet flirty at the very same moment; while the all-over draping detail that adorns the black satin jersey material adds volume to the style without forcing the wearer to forsake resilience. It is a saucy new take on the well-known little black dress. Sadly, at $595.00, it is also well out of the budget of the modern-day working girl. Luckily, ASOS has come to the rescue.

Though more bodycon than the Wang wonder; ASOS’ Twisted Slinky One Shoulder Dress, for just $64.25, is every bit as daring as its higher-priced counterpart, with the added bonus of being available in a total of seven different colors – black, purple, mink, lime, white, flawless pink, and navy – giving you the chance to buy a different shade for every single day of the week!

What’s your stand…will you splurge, or save?

Fashionably yours!

Thanks to Net-A-Porter and ASOS for the pictures.

Wow! I love them both! The neckline on the ASOS one is a bit more revealing...I likey! But I also love the sophistication of the Alexander Wang number! If I had to chose, I'd go Wang all the way! There's no way you wouldn't look like a million bucks in this ensemble!

My favorite word of the week happens to be "drooling" and I will use it again here. I'm droooooling over both designs - and I must agree, nothing sexier than just a little skin in the right places. In my eyes, a woman's back and shoulders are some of the sexiest parts!
Great post..

I used to not like the one-shoulder look, but I've been getting more into it lately! I love the Aelexander Wang dress, but both are fabulous!

Wang all the way today! I love the slightly looser fit, and the fabric looks classier and oh-so soft. Gorgeous.

I'm sad to admit that this is one case in which I don't think the copycat version even compares to the original. Ah well!

Nubiasnonsense said...

I love the one sided shoulder look. The original is really great, but I'm sure there are plenty of similar styles out there

Erika: Eloquent, as always! It's sexy when clothes allow room for imagination. The one shoulder look is both sexy and classy! I likes! :)

They are both sexy! I like the slight drapiness of the Wang more but would save and get the Asos version!

J. said...

I adore the Wang! In my dreams, it would be mine. In reality, however, I won't complain about ASOS!

Elle said...

a great little black dress gets me every time! unfortunately my closet can't take any more right now or i'd have that ASOS number in my shopping cart right now :)

I would actually take the second one over the first, I love the simplicity of it, plus the price is just right!

I am in complete love with the Alexander Wang dress it is so sexy not to fitted just perfect. It is a goddess dress!HOWEVER, the ASOS is so similar and comes in seven colors this is a hard one!!!!

I LOVE that dress. I posted about it a few weeks ago in the tan-ish color. It's so perfect and lovely. I want it!!

Tiffany said...

I think the one shoulder dress look is very sophisticated and nice.

However...not on me.

That being said, I can't really see much of a difference between the two dresses. Definitely save on this one.

pixelhazard said...

Beautiful dresses but alas usually a short hemline is bad news for me. I either have to wear tights underneath because of my oddly long legs (without the slimness to suit) or get one size bigger with which case it usually is long enough but not for the right reasons. I will be happier when hems get longer and i can sit on metal benches on a cold day without wincing

Aury said...

Oh my love, those dresses are soo gorgeous! However did you find them? I guess you are just amazing like that :)

Happy Earth Day!!

love them both BUT I love the look for less as the material is less shiny. Saving money right and left - love it!

Did I ever tell you that I like your name? Spelling Erika with a K is so much more.. exotic.

Beautiful beautiful beautiful! I wish I could afford the real thing but the ASOS one could definitely work...maybe I'll cross out the ASOS lettering on the tag and write in Alexander Wang lol I'm such a label whore!
