Thrifty Thursday: Tom Ford Claudia Sunglasses for Less

Darlings, I don’t know about you; but personally I see nothing wrong with indulging in multiple pairs of sunglasses. Many feel the need to place all of their adoration on a single pair that will see them through late-night bonfires on the beach, sticky summer afternoons spent amongst fellow music lovers at various concerts in the park, and early-morning people-watching sessions that involve peering at cute boys atop the terrace of a chichi café from behind dark shades. Not I.

I prefer to switch up my sunny personality on a nearly daily basis, depending upon my current cravings; and, at the moment, I’m coveting un petit tête-à-tête with Tom Ford’s Claudia.

I know that I have said it time and time again about various accoutrements, accessories, and forms of footwear; but this time there is no question about it…I truly believe that Claudia may be my sunglass counterpart. She is, without a doubt, destined to be my new partner in crime.

A sinewy little seductress who sports not chunky, overbearing arms to support her oversized round frames, but rather twig-like tentacles showcasing a subtle strip of gold plating that takes on a look synonymous with a gilded piece of bamboo; Claudia is every bit as posh and sophisticated as the girl about town aspires to be. Hence the reason why it pains me to say that she is also the bearer of a price tag just as glamorous and urbane as her aesthetic.

Kitty cats, given the fact that I change my sunglasses as frequently as I change my undergarments, I am obviously not in a position to spend the $249.99 required to make Claudia my own. Never mind the fact that she has graced the face of my favorite Spice Girl from childhood (Baby Spice, for your information), it’s simply not going to happen. As for Old Navy’s Women’s Bamboo-Frame Sunglasses, however…I’ll take a pair in black, purple, and light brown – please and thank you!

At $9.50 a pair, I find myself incapable of resisting Old Navy’s affordably amazing answer to Claudia’s chic-tude; thus, I will be spoiling myself with all three colors. After all, a girl can never have too many pairs of sunglasses peeking out of her handbag!

Which road are you traveling today, dolls? Tightwad or spendthrift?

Fashionably yours!

Thanks to hi Sunglasses and Old Navy for the pictures.

I love sunglasses. They are a must have year round when living in SoCal. I have many pairs b/c they are an accessory and the shape must be right with the outfit...that being said I have a tendency every so often to lose a pair...and well if I spend more than $20 on them and lose them, I would be pretty upset. That's why when it comes to sunnies, I am all for inexpensive, fabulous finds. :)

sunglasses are something i just can't see spending lots of $$$ on. i'm so careless with them...always scratching them up b/c i throw them in my purse.
and just looking at the two featured here i actually like the way the old navy version looks more. great find as always!

I love expensive sunglasses. I am so guilty as charged. I would, however, get the cheaper ones as well because a girl can never have too many pairs! xo

I've sat on WAYYY too many pairs of sunglasses or threw them in my purse & pulled out pieces of them to spend over $200 on them!! I like this style tho without the full glass on the lil sides. I'll check out the cheaper one most definitely. =)

For me, there's nothing more chic than a pair of designer shades! You instanly feel like a million bucks! I'll say Tom Ford for sure!

Fab! I love designer sunglasses but refuse to spend more than $15 on a pair because I either lose or break at least two pairs a year. Love your picks!

Oh I'm with you. I've got winter sunglasses, summer sunglasses, cloudy day shades, sunny day shades. Only one pair would never do, so I'd opt for Old Navy's today :)

Oh my goodness I have been wanting this exact pair of Tom Ford's for some time now... ah, I am running to Old Navy soon! thanks for this!!

those are nice!

The answer is simple - thrifty buying allows me 10x as many sun glasses; so Yes to saving!

I must say I've never considered (i.e., until now) the need for more than 1 pair of sun glasses, but you've given me a lot to think about. The desired sunglasses style for driving may be different than the one for walking on the beach before sunset. One should dress accordingly :)

yea i have to be a tightwad on sunnies. i am rough with them.

I love sunglasses, but I'm afraid I'll ALWAYS take the cheap road. Like some of the above commenters, I've stepped on/ sat on/ crushed way too many pairs to spend any more than $20 on them. Good find, Ms. Fashionista!

Oh I love love love Claudia! I tried her on at least three different airports... than big sighs... back on the shelf. I`m with you on opting for cheaper alternatives, so far I`ve lost every single pair of expensive sunglasses I`ve ever owned... you gotta learn the lesson :) xxx

Thanks so much for this post! I saw someone on youtube with these and I loved them, but when she mentioned the price I wasn't to keen on getting them! The Old Navy ones look so similar!

That is a good match. However when it comes to sunnies, i'm kind of a snob. I always go for the name brand. Haha.

Seriously? I went to Old Navy yesterday and was so proud because I found an ultra cute tunic and I thought "Cafe Fashionista would be do proud!" Haha! But then I was like, "oh, she might frown upon Old Navy." I bought it anyway and I'm so glad you promote good ol' Old Navy. PS... I always buy my Sunnies at Norstrom's BP because they are $10 also.

Very cute and stylish pair of sunglasses. I love the version for less as well. I can't wait for Tom Ford to begin designing woman's wear again!

I dont even own one pair!! :( I lose them as soon as I buy them! No joke!

I love these glasses! They look so chic! I'll definitely be thrifty and take the Old Navy pair. They look just as good as Tom Ford's! :)

I have a pair of authentic missoni shades I got on sale in italy for 50 euros and I thought that's me done (with regards to designer shades shopping). I love accessories too much too only have the one pair of shades. Hence it shall be the old navy's for me (in all 3 colours hopefully).

i wish i could be like elton john and have an entire room dedicated to sunglasses! love them so much. ive only got a few designer pairs and a whole stack of vintage lovelys to swap around with.

I guess when you get older, the value of a good pair of sunnies is more appreciated. I tried to use the cheaper ones but I usually end up with headaches. Maybe because of the material and the construction. So I have no recourse but to really spend on my sunnies. Have a great day Erika! xoxo

I have to confess that I only have one pair of glasses and I own it since 2008.I didn´t used to wear sunglasses before 2007. It is true!

Mines are very similar to this you are showing.

These both look like great finds and I also love finding sun glasses at the swap meet - they always have the great deals. I'm with the other gals, loving the bamboo detail!

So pricy is the first so i goa go tightwad and pick the Old Navy. I am gonna still look good in it anyway.

I like the ON ones! I feel like sunglasses are so easy to lose, it would suck to spend a ton on them and lose them.

S.Elisabeth said...

Ah perfect find! I agree, I need multiple pairs of sunglasses, not just one! I don't know how the boys do it.

Emily said...

I'd probably go with the old navy pair!
love 'em :)

i cannot believe those are from old navy! what an amazing find, erika!

I also change my sunglasses way to often and probably have more pairs than is healthy! Although, I feel that a shades obsession is a justifiable pursuit when you live in California.

LOVELY LOVELY LOVELY! I have the tendency to keep buying sunnies until my mum will go like "How many sunglasses do you need, really?" Well, I like to have them few in the car, in my handbag, in my room? or just leave it anywhere within reach before I head outside! xoxo :)

I think I have almost as many sunglasses as shoes! And the Claudia is one of the pairs in my collection! A person can never have too many sunnies, they always fit, they always look good, and they go with everything.

The sun is finally coming out around here..and the snow is soooo bright. Cool, that you found the Old Navy one. I must admit though I love my John Lennon-like one the best.

I always need quite a few cheap pairs to wear casually - as I'm prone to damaging and breaking them!

I am craving some of Karen Walker's new eyewear as a bit of a splurge at the moment though. :)

The sun has recently come out in England, so I'm definitely on the look out for sunglasses. I love these two, but am going to be thrifty and go for the Old Navy ones.

I own only one pair of glasses but I have no objections at all against having more! In fact, I am, working on it! :))

i so love glasses too. But I'm always careful in choosing because my face profile is too picky. I envy girls who look so good with these sizes, you know. They've always got the perfect nose :(

Have a great weekend girl!

Old Navy, here I come! If I haven't sat on my sunglasses or left them at a gas station or restaurant, then undoubtedly I have thrown them in my purse so many times that they're super scratched up!

How bizarre, those sunglasses look just like the ones I painted last week... creepy! I guess I wasn't as original as I thought. What is it they say, "...nothing new under the sun." They are stellar.

I LOOOVE this sunglasses!!!!

These are fabulous! I have a few desinger ones but it's nice to pick up a few affordables here and there and throw them into the mix and wear them on days when you're pretty sure you're going to lose them ;)

When I was little I never understood why my parents would buy the expensive sunglasses when I could spot cheaper ones while inside the car! Now I know!! :) It's so totally irresistible to not buy a fabulous pair of shades, right? Fortunately a lot of shapes suit my face but I love the aviators!! :)

Sarah Whitney said...

I've owned many expensive shades and ALL OF THEM have been stepped on. By me, my boyfriend... the cat even broke a pair. I've given up on owning anything that costs more than 10 bucks haha. Bargain all the way!

Hey erika!!

I love how you take the time to find the cheaper-more realistic priced items on such cool fasionalble things for all of us. The old navy ones look awesome!!

Nikolett said...

Definitely going the cheaper route :) Though the designer glasses are every bit as posh as I would like a pair of sunglasses to be, I must confess that I often misplace mine, only to find them a year later ... and I would be devastated to lose a $250 pair!

My fav sunglass design is the simple Granny glasses!

I love the bamboo ones!!! Great find, those are fantastic!!

Such a fun shape! I'd opt for the cheaper ones every time, though! I have a tendency to be rough on sunglasses (tossing them in my car's cupholder), so I don't think I can justify a pricier pair!

What a great alternative!

Kim Jackson said...

I too am a HUGE fan of the sunnies. I have probably 5 pair right now--including my new Marc by Marc Jacobs that were fabulously discounted at Bluefly.com--but I will need more new ones for this spring and summer season. I am feeling colored cheapies, I think. Something in bright greens and purples...ah excitement!

Sarah said...

So I tried to order some from Old Navy and the page isn't available. Any other websites that you know of where I can find them for the same price? I'm super bummed! I LOVE THESES SHADES! Thanks for any ideas!
